THE TRENTSIDE FEDERATION (ST MARTIN’S AND WEST BUTTERWICK C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOLS) SCHOOL NEWS

As the Summer Term has progressed since returning from the Easter break, our schools have commenced involvement with a number of exciting projects. Cycling Proficiency training has got off to a good start. We have a number of pupils in Years 5 and 6 who are having weekly sessions to develop the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads. By the end of this term, the pupils will have looked at how to control and master their bikes, deal with traffic and consider road conditions. This is another important way in which we can work together in ‘keeping our children safe’, Thank you to the staff and volunteers who make this possible at both St Martin’s and West Butterwick. Furthermore, the Junior pupils at both schools will be involved in first-aid training over the coming two terms (Summer 2015 and Autumn 2015). As a Federation we are always seeking to provide the children with opportunities to engage in a wide range of educational experiences, allowing them to develop in as many ways as possible, recognising that there are multiple intelligences and so many skills to develop in each individual. A number of pupils from St Martin’s have recently been involved in an exciting vibrant choral event. Inspired by the music of African communities and conducted by the composer Alexander l’Estrange, our pupils were part of an ‘all-age community choir’ made up of several primary school choirs and members of Market Rasen and District Choral Society. Alexander l’Estrange’s jazz quintet accompanied in this production of ‘Zimbe!’ on Saturday 9th May – a brilliant fusion of traditional African song and jazz!

West Butterwick pupils have continued in their commitment to support the local community through various projects such as maintaining a flower-bed in St Mary’s churchyard. Fuscias, petunias, pansies and Jacob’s Ladder plants were planted up recently. A group of West Butterwick children will be invovled in the Sunday Family Service at St Mary’s on 24th May 10.30am. The theme for this service is Pentecost and we intend to write prayers and send these up to Heaven attached to helium balloons.

The whole world has seen the devastating effects of the recent earthquake in Nepal. Many people have been touched by the loss of life and destruction of homes. At St. Martin’s School, Jackson in Year 5 was so moved by their plight that he wanted to do something to help and encourage those around him to join in. After some discussion it was agreed to ask the children of St. Martin’s School to bring in loose change to raise money to help those affected.

On 8th May the children and parents responded with much generosity – thank you. West Butterwick school is supporting an appeal for children in Sierre Leone who are being assisted in getting back to school ‘post-Ebola’. Many of these children walk at least 13 miles per day, to and from school. We are hoping to fund school shoes that will help with this as most children do not have shoes to protect their feet on this regular long journey. This project is being coordinated via the Wesley Memorial Church Epworth. To find out more about what the pupils across both schools have been involved in lately, please visit www.trentsidefederation.co.uk

EPWORTH TRACTOR RUN 21 June 2015

In aid of Lindsey Lodge Hospice Scunthorpe By Anthony Catherall

After last years inaugural run, when nearly ÂŁ2000.00 was raised for Lindsey Lodge Hospice Scunthorpe, organisers predict that there is a distinct possibility of up to 100 tractors participating in this years event. With a new exciting route, drivers from three counties will assemble at the Mowbray Arms, Epworth, on 'Fathers and Midsummer's Day' on the 21st June, for the start at 10am.

Large crowds are expected all along the route. Tractors of all shapes, sizes and colours have been prepared for this event including pink tractors for the lady drivers. The Brumpton family, who organise their own tractor run at Barnetby Wold (also in aid of the hospice), are planning to bring up to four tractors this year. The route above, will travel in a clock-wise direction taking in five Isle of Axholme villages. With an approximate arrival of 12pm, lunch is being taken courtesy of the White Hart Public house at Owston Ferry. Afterwards at 1pm, the tractors will make their way back to Epworth across country via Bagsby, Listers and Newlands Lane. At 3pm a Dakota aircraft from the Memorial Flight will fly along Rectory Street and over Epworth to delight the crowds. Local businesses have lent their support once again, in providing great prizes for a grand raffle to be drawn in the Mowbray Arms at 4:30pm. Come along the familyplease and cheer tractors along, we forward to seeing you. Towith advertise callthe 01302 532676 orlook 07912 643010

THE W.W.2 DIARY OF CLIFFORD SPENCER 1764164 Gunner. SPENCER Clifford 27 L.A.A. (Light Ack Ack) Regt, R.A. (Royal Artillery) (107 Bty. (Battery)) Adapted & edited for publication by Anthony E. Catherall

CAPTURED th.

The 20 June, (according to official documents Clifford was captured at Tobruk at 20:00 hrs 21 June 1942) what a day, which I and many others will never forget. 6.30 am Gun 88 and ME’s started the battle for Tobruk, we already knew that we were surrounded but never gave it a thought that we would be captured. We were getting shelled, but the bombers were bombing the heavies and infantry etc, on the perimeter. The heavies brought a lot down, they had no help from our air force, and not one of ours did we see that day. Jerry had taken the desert first. I had to go sick that morning with a bad back, didn’t want to, but reported it night before. For all the bombs and shells that were falling, Fanny wanted to know why I had not shaved that morning! Heavies were firing for all they were worth then - the Hovil guns opened up, so things were beginning to look bad. They had hundreds of Lorries. Tanks started coming over the perimeter, the sky was black with smoke. Shells were coming more often now, the tanks with their big guns, had now got sight of the harbour. Boats of all kinds were trying to get away. Some were burning from end to end, passing just by our port, some of the men were jumping off and swimming to shore, some jumped off with kit on their backs and sunk. Later the rocket guns on the Harbour side were blown up, we began to think then. Later about eight o’clock we were told to get our gun put out of action and scram. So I got a few things what I could in my haversack and off where to we did not know, we had not gone 20 yards when a Bren gun came in sight, at first we thought it was one of ours, but as we drew nearer we could see it was Jerry, he had his guns trained on us, I know that I for one, thought of my loved ones at home. Would he fire we thought, we had heard so much about him, and expected anything. But he held fire, made us drop some of our kit, but I kept my haversack and topcoat. He then sent us up the road into Tobruk and he carried on too collect some more of the lads. Four of our lads went a different way to us, so were not caught so soon, although it would have been better for them. They got on a boat, which got set on fire, and one was killed. Bill, Harold, and others had lucky escapes. Well as we went up the road, shells and German Panzer 3 tank bullets were still flying about, and all of a sudden there was such an explosion, the petrol dump had gone for six, and what a blaze. At last we got into the centre of town and there were Jerry tanks all lined up, looking very unconcerned, so now we knew for sure that we were prisoners.

Milk kitchen installed at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice by DC Interiors

A separate kitchen has been installed at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice so that children’s milk can be stored and prepared in one place. The milk kitchen allows nursing and support staff in the Care Team at the North Anston based hospice to store and prepare feeds for children who cannot eat food. The kitchen means that staff can prepare the feeds in one dedicated place, ready to give to children in the hospice’s care. Previously, milk was stored and prepared in the hospice’s pharmacy. Sarah Branson, Care Team Manager, said: “Many of our children require specialist feeds and all have different amounts at varying points throughout a day. It is really important for us to have this dedicated milk kitchen for space and storage and many other reasons – including best practice.” Bluebell Wood has a specialist team of care staff which supports children and young people with a shortened life expectancy, both in their own homes and at the hospice. The team looks after children with a vast range of complex medical needs, offering short breaks, day care provision, community support and end of life treatment and care. As it costs £3m a year to run the charity’s vital services, DC Interiors, a company with premises in Maltby, Rotherham, and Edenthorpe, Doncaster, provided and installed the kitchen completely free of charge. Stuart Allen, of DC Interiors, said: “We are delighted to be able to give something back to the community and it’s great to know it’ll make a positive difference. This is one of the bigger charity projects we have carried out recently and we are proud to be supporting Bluebell Wood in this way.”

Twenty four members of Epworth and District Flower Club were politely called to order by Ann Everett as she opened the May meeting of the club. Many members had arrived with various plants and cuttings to be sold in aid of the club’s funds. Ann began by welcoming everyone including a visitor, before giving a quick resume of some necessary business and then introduced a return guest, Sarah Atwell, who was to lead a workshop. The tables had been prepared beforehand but there was no hint of what we might be doing. Then Sarah introduced us to a “Spring” creation. She produced a planter with a pale green string effect decoration around it, containing a block of oasis. Into the block she placed two stalks of dried flowering cherry, one taller than the other and then produced two beautiful large chrysanthemums, white with a lime green edge to their petals and a further three avalanche roses. These were strategically placed before Sarah added three large leaves which she proceeded to curl and tie. Small foliage was used around the base of the arrangement to hide the block of oasis. Sarah chose senecio, rosemary and hebe but commented that this would be the opportunity for members to personalise their creations. Next she produced some flexi grass similar to Midelino sticks but natural, and looped three carefully before attaching them to the original cherry stalks with toning green wire. Finally Sarah draped narrow green rope through and around the flowers and attached the ends with wire pins, thus creating a modern appearance. So easy!! Sarah has a delightful manner as she demonstrates and adds little educational hints to an audience of various abilities. She also prepares very thoroughly, even attaching sellotape to the rope pieces so that they could be used without splitting. So it was time for the members to participate. As usual Sarah provided everything and efficiently distributed all the elements necessary. The group began to create their own individual arrangements and Sarah gently encouraged all as she wandered amongst us and commented on various aspects and alternatives. Everyone produced an arrangement to be proud of but the individuality of each was quite remarkable considering we all had the same basic components. Celia Jones gave the vote of thanks before coffee was served and later it was announced that the plant sale had produced approximately £50. The next meeting will be on Monday, 8th June when Jean Fordham will demonstrate “Memories of Village Life”. We meet in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey at 7.30pm. You might like to join us.

ONCE A FIREMAN - ALWAYS A FIREMAN By Anthony Catherall

The first of April 2015, was a significant day for the people of Epworth and the Isle of Axholme. As a former full-time senior fire officer, I was responsible for creating new initiatives and innovations in the Surrey Fire & Rescue Service. I was delighted therefore, to see first hand, what new initiatives in regard to medical emergencies are now available to us all where we live. At Epworth Fire Station on that day, I was informed and able to photograph the firefighters and machines that will provide the much improved Emergency First Response (EFR). This six-month trial, between Humberside Fire & Rescue Service & East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) should be rubberstamped if all goes well later in the year. Together they are now to provide 24-hour emergency medical cover in the Isle, that is available to all residents. The team are now complete with a new 'Rapid Response Vehicle' used for transporting the emergency responder and life saving equipment to the incident, fitted with blues & two's being based at Epworth Fire Station (and others in the authority). It is a tremendous boost for Epworth people in time of need. At 1200 hrs precisely, on 1 April 2015, Epworth Fire Station went live with the latest scheme. In readiness for this day, the Epworth fire station personnel have undergone competent training in 'Rapid Response' driving to assist with their special medical training. Our own 'First Responders' have also received immediate emergency care qualifications being able to deliver defibrillation (for people 12 years and older) together with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Also on hand are monitoring equipment for blood pressure, blood glucose, and oxygen saturation. All being provided in line with the EMAS clinical governance arrangements. Therefore, our community are most fortunate to enjoy two vital life saving operations with the ambulance adding to the volunteer Lincolnshire Integrated Voluntary Emergency Service (LIVES) who will work in conjunction with EFR. It has been confirmed by the authorities, that this new service will not in any way compromise Fire & Rescue emergencies and response. I'm sure like me. all our readers would want to wish both services every success with this new up to date service. Haxey Church of England Primary School News The school was sad to hear about the recent earthquake in Nepal, a place close to our hearts given our ties. In an effort to help, pupils were asked to bring in cakes and buns to sell to others. A fabulous response was mustered from our school community, and we raised ÂŁ137.41 A massive thank you to all who contributed, especially the bakers! Year 1 recently went on a school trip to Normanby Hall to experience 'Wash Day Blues' as they got to grips with Victorian wash day equipment. After donning the attire of the period, they used dolly tubs, mangles and irons of the time to do the washing. All enjoyed their day out and also had a tour of the hall. Thank you to year 1 teaching staff and parents that supported this trip.

Year 4 are currently studying Egypt, and as part of their curriculum have been producing some fantastic art work. Well done to everyone. You can certainly see from the picture that the standard of work is very high.

Key stage 1 pupils recently enjoyed a visit from community policeman PC Mark Raper from Epworth Police Station and his van, as part of their study of vehicles this term. The children had the opportunity to look inside at the equipment, turn on the flashing lights and sirens and were particularly interested in 'the cage' where they experienced being locked up. Thank you to PC Raper for visiting the school. Well done to those who have completed end of KS1 and KS2 assessments. We are very proud of your hard work. It's almost time to have a good sort out, Bags 2 School will be collecting on Tuesday 9th June so watch out for bags coming home. Please bear us in mind when you're having a sort out. It's the ideal time to ditch those winter woollies! Please include ladies, gents, children's clothing, handbags, hats, scarves, bags jewellery, lingerie, belts and soft toys. School uniform is not accepted, however this can be left in school for the PTFA's pre-loved uniform stall. Haxey's Got Talent returned on 21st May. We saw the usual variety of Acts. A massive thank you to all who supported event, especially helpers. Well532676 done to allor participants. Dear Readers,

Doncaster Advanced Motorists

Active systems such as Anti lock braking systems (ABS), Traction control systems (TCS), Electronic stability control (ESC), etc will intervene to try and prevent a loss of control. ESC is stability control braking. A microcomputer monitors the signals from sensors and compares, 25 times a second, whether the driver’s wishes (steering input), correspond to the actual direction in which the vehicle is moving. If the vehicle moves in a different direction to the one steered by the driver, ESC can recognise the developing situation faster than the driver could. The system applies measured brake pressure to individual wheels; it stabilizes the vehicle and thus guides it in the desired direction. If the vehicle you are driving has ESC fitted, it will automatically possess two other active safety systems, ABS and TCS. The ABS prevents the wheels from locking during braking. The TCS avoids wheel slip when driving off. While ABS and TCS influence the vehicles longitudinal dynamics, ESC additionally improves the lateral dynamics. Instinctively a driver may attempt to avoid a collision by braking sharply and wrenching the steering wheel. This sort of manoeuvre can easily put the driver in the path of oncoming traffic. This combination of rapid steering and counter steering movements drastically increase the danger of losing control of a vehicle. ESC will act in a controlled and precise way in an attempt to stabilize the vehicle. ESC includes a computer on the chassis linked to the vehicles braking system that may be in communication with the engine management system to cut engine power momentarily. Different vehicle manufacturers will programme their ESC systems to intervene at different points dependent on their perceived New Car Tyres. customer requirement. All systems however are there Puncture Repairs. to prevent a vehicle from skidding.

Danum Tyre Services Ltd

• ESC has been developed to assist a normal driver, driving at normal road speeds. • The overriding factor with vehicle control is the law of physics. • If available tyre grip is exceeded the vehicle will lose control. • If you have entered a situation too fast, you cannot rely on ESC to save you. • In a loss of control situation the driver must reduce the vehicle’s momentum by fully applying the brakes, ABS will allow the driver to slow down and steer for a safe exit. • You must steer in the direction you wish to go. ESC will be trying to assist steering by braking individual wheels. DO NOT TURN ESC OFF.

This stunning girl is McLaren, a Ridgeback Cross who is around 18 months old. McLaren is a lovely, happy girl who will need an active home with lots of walks, and a large secure garden would be ideal. She is ok with other dogs, and would be fine with older dog-savvy kids. McLaren is neutered and fully vaccinated. If you are interested in meeting this lovely girl, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705.
