Epworth and District Flower Club News- “It’s all Booty” was the title of the demonstration given by Penny Vincent who had travelled from the Grantham area to entertain us. The evening was most enjoyable. Penny largely created traditional arrangements but varied them with her “finds”. Her commentary included anecdotes from her experiences owning a flower shop and she gave tips for old and new enthusiasts. Mrs Marian Hughes gave the vote of thanks and said she was a member who remembered Penny’s previous visit. The June meeting will be in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey 7.30 on Monday 12th June when we shall host Lucie Griffin. Lucie is from Branching Out and will have a flower stall to accompany her demonstration.

THE W.W.2 DIARY OF CLIFFORD SPENCER 1764164 Gunner. SPENCER Clifford 27 L.A.A. (Light Ack Ack) Regt, R.A. (Royal Artillery) (107 Bty. (Battery)) Adapted & edited for publication by Anthony E. Catherall

Dec. 20th. What a day. Rain and mud, but manage to make a Yorkshire pudding, it’s really a sight to see us making things the way we cook them. We now have homemade fireplaces made with tins; they have ovens and chimneys on. Some have ovens at the side, some underneath. There are some clever chaps and can do almost anything with tins. There are all kinds of men with different trades, bank clerks, down to labourers. There is a piece of spare ground at the bottom of the camp for making fires, and these little stoves are dotted all over the place. All the lads in our tent start decorating for Xmas, and what good ideas some of them have. Paper chains, made out of meat roll labels, same on cig packets, cocoa tins, milk, labels off every tin what comes out of the parcels. Horse shoes, lanterns, Father Xmas, made out of packing what has been in parcel boxes, and many other things, and it sure does look good. Make my Xmas cake, it contains; Bread-plums-raisons-orange-biscuits-butter-sugar-tinned milk and coffee to darken it. It’s still Dec 20th. Best of all today, I receive a letter from my darling with photo of you both. What a difference in our little Julie, but still got that lovely face, I can also see mischief in those eyes, and you my darling, look as lovely as ever, it’s the best photo I’ve ever seen of you. It’s the best Xmas box I could have had. I am much happier already. Rainy days soap issue. PPX11 (Pope Pius X11) sends his best wishes to all POWs, also gives each one of Dec. 21st. us a Xmas calendar, with hymns and verses in, a very nice present, and I hope to keep it. Make my Xmas puddings. First fine day for a week, it’s been just a mud heap. Dec. 22nd. Ice my cake. We all get a Xmas parcel each. They are grand. Contents are sugarDec. 23rd. tea, milk-chocs-Xmas pudding-Xmas cake-chocolate biscuits-steak and tomato puddings-braised steak and macaroni pudding-sweets-pure English butter-cheese, and marmalade. Ice my parcel cake, and put a little decorating on them. Service and carol singing, a Dec. 24th. lovely night for it, for we have all services outside, tonight the moon is shining, and its frosty, a real ideal Xmas eve, but in the wrong place! The decorations are now complete, and it looks great, its bed-time, and ready for Xmas day, we are going to make the best of it. I’ll not be filling Julie’s stocking tonight, I’m just going to sleep thinking of my darlings, of the past Xmas’s we have had and hoping I’ll be with you next year. So here’s a happy Xmas to all my darlings at home with big kisses for Mary and Julie xxx The day has arrived for big eats. We start with an early cup of tea with biscuits at Dec 25th. 6.30am. Stay in bed until 8.30 am. Roll call. After roll call 9 am. We brew again and have fried meat roll and toast. 11.30 am. A meal from cookhouse, which is boiled cabbage tops and macaroni, (lousy stuff). 1.30 pm tea, some of my homemade pudding cold, and a piece of cake. Intended eating more, but full up. 4 pm cook house meal, same as dinnertime, but worse if anything could not eat it all. 8.30 pm steak and tomato pudding followed by parcel cake, then a few bits and pieces, after that lot I don’t feel too good. With having such a little to eat for such a long time, a little extra has made a lot of us ill. We took our beds down, made a table, put a sheet on for a cloth and this afternoon, put all our cakes on show, it sure was a sight to see. They were all lettered and iced, all coloured, better than many I’ve seen in shop windows. I do wish you could have seen them dear. There were some beautiful cakes; we all tried to see who could do the best. I reckon I did a good one myself. I shall have to 16in thePlease mention “The when responding to advertisements carry on next book-.Lovely letterArrow” from Elsie, saying it won’t be long now. Hair cut, not before time. Coneygarth Farm Day Nursery was opened in 1997 by Carol and Martin Cooper, they were inspired to open the nursery as they had three young sons, triplets and wanted to provide for them and other children, truly excellent childcare in a lovely rural environment. Their farm, Coneygarth seemed an absolutely ideal place for a children's nursery and over the years they have renovated all the farm buildings. They can take 76 children including 24 children in the Out of School/Holiday Club. As the nursery is on their farm they feel they can offer children quite unique learning opportunities in such a natural and green environment. The children enjoy going out on farm walks, feeding the lambs, watching the cows as well as collecting eggs from the resident hens. The nursery boasts a large vegetable garden, a small nursery wood and two acres of secure woodland. Coneygarth promotes healthy eating and our nursery cook prepares wholesome meals, the meat and vegetables are sourced locally. Coneygarth Farm Day Nursery is committed:

to ensuring parents can confidently leave their children in our care knowing they are going to be well looked after. Your child's well-being, happiness and enjoyment is paramount and our number one priority. Our philosophy is to CARE.

to valuing the learning children gain through play. All our activities are centred on the individual needs and interest of your child to help them gain personal independence and reach their full potential.

to an excellent partnership between parents and our qualified and experienced staff who offer continuity of care throughout the nursery years and onwards throughout the Out of School and Holiday Club ensuring that Coneygarth continues to feel like a big happy family.

All their hard work and efforts were rewarded when they achieved OUTSTANDING in their recent Ofsted inspection. The inspector said that the effectiveness of the leadership and management, the quality of teaching, learning and assessment, personal development, behaviour and welfare and the outcomes for children is Outstanding. He said 'the manager and her leadership team have extremely high expectations. They are very ambitious for children to achieve. Staff share the manager's passion and vision. The children enjoy an excellent range of exciting and very engaging experiences. The staff have outstanding knowledge of how young children learn. They strongly help children to develop their self-confidence, awareness and eagerness to learn.

“This gorgeous smiley boy is Reeko, a 2 year old Crossbreed. Reeko is one of the softest natured, cuddly dogs we have met. He adores being with people. He has lived with small children and babies and is great with them, and is also good with cats. He is a bit wary of other dogs, and will avoid them on a walk, but is not aggressive. Reeko doesn’t like being left alone in the house for very long, so he needs a home where there is someone there most of the time. He is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. If you would like to come and meet this smashing boy, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705.”

News From Haxey Church of England Primary School We are proud to introduce our new magical reading area, located adjacent to our year 1 outdoor area, and to be shared by all at school. The area is naturally sheltered under trees, offering a peaceful and shaded area during the hopeful sunnier months ahead of us, and includes toadstool seating, fairy doors, characters, and a teacher chair. The mastermind behind this is local gentleman Colin Mathias, for whom the school and children will be eternally grateful for his hard work and craftsmanship. We cannot thank him enough for this wonderful donation which will enrich the learning journey of all of our children. Members of the PTFA worked tirelessly to make sure the area in which the reading area is situated was in tip top shape and ready for use, and have made repairs so that the wood bark surface would not escape under the existing fence. Thanks a million to the following people who gave up their time for the benefit of the school with this project: Claire Thorpe, Rachel Berry, Julie Field, Sharon Barth, Polly & Rob Hill, Ian & Ali Jewison, Richard Morris, Ang & Dave Peace and Gav Berry.

HAXEY CONQUERS SNOWDON Celebration Party for the Queen’s 90th Birthday Members and volunteer Ann & John Smedley and Carol & Peter Lindley would like to thank the many local people who so generously supported Ann's coffee morning and sponsored John, Carol and Peter to climb Snowdon recently. All were delighted to make it safely up and down, but even more delighted that the sum raised was in excess of £1100. This has been donated to PHASE, who build schools and medical centres, train teachers and medics, and teach employability skills to adults in remote villages in Nepal, which suffered 2 dreadful earthquakes a year ago. Thank you all so much for your amazing generosity.

helpers of the Isle of Axholme Physically Handicapped Society celebrated the Queen’s 90th Birthday on Thursday 21st April. The party was held at the Epworth Wellbeing and Youth Hub where everyone enjoyed a lunch served by Sandra Bishop. The afternoon celebration continued with music and sing-a-long with the “Pensionaires”. The entertainment began with the singing of Happy Birthday to the Queen and concluded with the National Anthem. A delightful afternoon enjoyed by all came to a close with the sharing of a Birthday Cake together with a glass of wine to toast Her Majesty. A grant towards the celebration party had been awarded from the North Lincolnshire Council Community Grant Fund.

Year 5 and year 6 are going to Study parks at Scunthorpe Football Club. We are learning to be reporters and are on a ten week course to achieve this. Last week Levi Sutton and Charlie Goode were interviewed by year 5 and year 6 and on the 30th of April we went to watch the last home match of the season against Port vale - it was so fun. Scunthorpe won 1-0. We are starting swimming lessons on the 9th of May at South Axholme but year 6 aren’t going for the first week because it is SATS week. The teachers and pupils wish all the children in year 6 good luck. We all know they will try their very best. Ofsted visited the school on the 13th of April and the outcome was that we continue to be a good school. We are all very pleased with the result. We had a cross country event but the bus did not turn up so we had a cross country run at school. Year 1 to year 6 did racing and I came third place out of 6 people. Everyone who took place got a certificate for running - it was great fun. We have a lot going on:

The awards were made at the Annual Parish Meeting (Wednesday 11 May).

‘CROWN’ COMPETITION FOR QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY Misterton Parish Council is organising a celebration on the Queen’s official 90th birthday – and all primary-age children are invited to enter the competition to decorate a crown. A template of the crown will be distributed via Misterton Primary School – but any children not attending the village school can request a template from The Misterton Centre (891872). Bring the crowns along to be judged on Sunday 12 June at 2.30pm in the Parish Church at the start of the village picnic and opening of the new Church Meadow play park. ‘GET SET GO’ SPORTS SESSIONS There’s an exciting pop lacrosse and ball skills session for children aged seven to 11 years during the half-term break, on Wednesday 1 June at Misterton Primary School. The session runs from 9.30am to 12.30pm, costs £5, and must be prebooked. To book, call 01909 534523, e-mail sports.develoment@bassetlaw.gov.uk, or book online at www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/sport. BASSETLAW COMMUNITY CAR SCHEME The Bassetlaw Community Car Scheme is available to Bassetlaw residents, who are unable to access any other forms of public transport. The Scheme can be used to visit friends or social clubs, attend doctor’s and hospital appointments, or maybe just go shopping. It is a door-to-door service; volunteer drivers will allow you one hour then take you home. If you know you are going to be more than an hour, there will be an additional charge for these journeys.

Joy was nominated for the fund-raising she has done for Cancer Research, following the death of a family member from cancer. With a series of events, Joy has raised around £5000 for this worthy cause. Max was nominated for the help he regularly offers to youngsters learning to swim at the Misterton Minnows Swimming Club, his help at Sure Start events at the Fire Station, and other fund-raising activities. He was described as a fantastic role model to young people in the village. They were presented with winners certificates and a cash prize by Chairman, Barry Cooper..

In order to use the scheme, you must register. The scheme is run with volunteer drivers using their own vehicles hence this is not an on-demand service. Three to four days’ notice is needed when booking a journey. Please contact the Community Car Scheme Coordinator at Bassetlaw Action Centre for further details: tel 01777 709650, e-mail: carscheme@bassetlawactioncentre.org.uk. The Misterton Centre is affiliated to BAC so enquiries can also be made there – call 01427 891872.

On a mad Bank Holiday in May children from the Isle came together for a Mad Hatters Tea Party! Today’s event was to say a little thank you to everyone who continues to support the Pride of the Isle; it was completely free for all the children. The day was bright, colourful and full of fun and laughter. 96 children enjoyed a crazy two hours at the biggest party in the Isle! Pride of the Isle are a no salary Charity who are committed to supporting children and adults who are terminally ill, creating memories for them and their loved ones. Our next event is NO JACKET REQUIRED on Friday 24th June at The Vulcan Room Finningley Airport. Tickets £10 and on sale via the website
