Welcome to the June issue of the Arrow!

On writing this editorial the weather is fabulous and next week brings us the promise of warmer weather as we head towards the summer months. As the months fly by we head into another election period and we once again encounter the final term of the school year and enter exam season. Good luck to all those families with children studying hard! Don’t forget as well as studying get plenty of exercise outdoors to help you relax and take a break at this stressful time. Lots of community news this month, check out what's going on in your area! This month has been a busy month with editorial, please bear in mind this is free for community events not making a profit. Whilst we try our best to include all information sometimes this isn't possible. The deadline for the July issue is Wednesday 14th June for distribution by the 1st July. If you are interested in advertising please be in touch before the date. Carolyn (editor) Email: carolyn@arrowpublications.co.uk Tel: 01302 532676 Mob: 0791 2643 010

THE W.W.2 DIARY OF CLIFFORD SPENCER 1764164 Gunner. SPENCER Clifford 27 L.A.A. (Light Ack Ack) Regt, R.A. (Royal Artillery) (107 Bty. (Battery)) Adapted & edited for publication by Anthony E. Catherall

RE-CAPTURED th.

Sep. 25 8am. Recaptured, (at Mount Flavia) had just got coffee boiled, when round the corner, pops a German Officer, he strolls up to us, we all had to smile, including the Officer, and it seemed so comical. He was very good and allowed us to pour out the coffee and drink and eat our bread and butter, then let us get all our kit together. So once more we are POW. We were taken to the village, put into a garage, until more were rounded up, in all there came to be about 120, a good haul. All the villagers were out watching but scared. Lorries took us to another village where we spent the night sleeping in the passage of a big house. When morning came Len had got parted from us and gone with a load, but thought we may go to the same place. Searched, packed in lorries, cramped up, but a pleasant journey until Sep. 26th. “CRASH” I was holding two parcel boxes on the side of the lorry for there wasn’t room elsewhere, when another lorry passed, hit the side of ours, also my arm, there was nothing to be done until we got to our destination a place called ( from official documents. Whilst on a lorry full of POW’s en route to FRASCATI the lorry smashed into another lorry going round a bend and Source’s left elbow was broken. At FRASCATI his arm was bandaged up and he was taken by lorry to CELIO hospital in ROME. Source was put in jail. After an operation on his elbow he was put back into jail where he remained until Allied Forces occupied ROME on 6 June 44) - where about a day Germans got round to me, attended to me as if I was one of their own kind. So each time I’ve come in contact with the Germans so far, they have been kind and acted like men. I was then told that I was to go to Rome Hospital.

JAIL HOSPITAL Arrived there 4.0pm. On with another chap of ours who had a bad foot. Change into Hospital suit, particulars taken, then into a ward where there were ten more English and South Africans. Nine had come straight from our camp hospital; they were unable to go into the hills. The tenth one had been in the hills, and he and his mate had resisted capture but paid for it, it’s no good attacking men with arms. He got shot through the thigh, and his mate was killed. Anyway I got some eats; I had been 24 hours without any, so was well ready for some. I have my arm x-rayed. Sep. 27th. Sep. 29th. Have my arm put in plaster, so I have waited 78 hours before setting. But they know their job, but my fingers were badly bruised too, I thought at least one to be broken. nd. X-rayed again, was told that it would have to be operated on later after the wound has Oct.2 healed. Well I’ve got a lovely bed, spring mattress, sheets and blankets. All clothes washed whenever you want, and plenty to eat! It would have been rough in the hills now. It started to rain the very next day after capture, and has been like it since Doctors and Nurses come every day to treat the boys, and are very good to us. One Oct.9th. nurse is a princess, and can speak English, she brings books etc. A South African black boy came in, he has been shot in the head, and another quarter of an inch would have killed him. Red Cross man comes and tells us he will try and get parcels of cigs for us Parcels come already, Americans’ lovely parcels. First we have had of those, 40 cigs and Oct. 10th. tobacco, which is a relief also got letters to send home, so is a very good day for us. Bells are ringing often here. My arm is painful at times. Yesterday the plaster was cut to loose, it was swollen. Wonder where my mates are, I guess they are in Germany by now. The professor’s wife (who set my arm) is English.

These two lovely crossbreed girls are looking for a new home together. Lily (black & white)- is 10, and Sasha is 7, and they have lived together from puppies. They are really affectionate, happy dogs who would love a new sofa to curl up on. They are still quite lively, and would really enjoy nice walks and a garden to play in. They are both good with other dogs, cats and children, and are no trouble in the house. They are neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you are interested in meeting these smashing girls, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.

The fabulous forties day is returning again to Haxey on 17th June 2017 Following the success of this event last year, Room 21 Big Band, who rehearse in the Haxey Methodist chapel room each week, will be hosting this day as a thank you to the community.
