Welcome to the June issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow. We are now in stage three which gives us further restrictions to the lockdown. Taking into effect on May 17th we are now allowed up to six people or two households to meet indoors, as well as the return of indoor service at restaurants, pubs, and cafes. At the same time, holiday makers will be able to travel again for their long-awaited summer breaks. Any advice on holidays or to book that break Luan from Hayes travel has been writing our monthly articles. Page 21 she gives more advice on the traffic light system for travel. As places start to open, keep an eye open for local activities. Epworth Old Rectory has worked hard to open and hopefully will be looking at some events very soon. Keep your events and community group information coming through. It would be good to see our lives getting back to some sort of normality. The deadline for the July issue is Friday 11th June for delivery by Thursday 1st July. Enjoy the read and stay safe!

Epworth Music Day 2021 – the Online Show This year, Epworth Music Day falls on Saturday 19th June. We have some 40 sets of local performers who are gearing themselves in a recording booth somewhere nearby to record music and song to entertain us via our YouTube channel. We will be introducing all these performers at a rate of one a day from later in April all the way up to 19th June. This will give us all a chance to sample what is being offered, and allow us to focus our choice of what to listen to on the day. Or maybe, you’ll want to listen to it all? With 40 performers each providing about 20-30 minutes of music, we will be bringing you some show online. If you miss any of the performers when they are profiled in this way, the videos will remain on the channel for us to listen to at our leisure. As in the normal event, all this is free! After all, this allows us a chance to sample music and songs from a wide range of musical genres’. The YouTube link is: https://www.youtube.com/channel/ UCVrUnk8GtvD21gX3SBR0eZA

THIRD MISTERTON WALK PLANNED Such is the popularity of the history walk in Misterton that a third date is planned. Both events in early June are fully booked – so a third date is Saturday 19 June, beginning at Misterton Parish Church at 9.45am. The ‘Walk & Talk’ is by Bassetlaw historian, Adrian Gray. After running through some of the main historical features of the Parish Church, the group will then take in the Soss (from the Dutch for sluice), searching out the ‘tunnel drain’ and the lost chapel. Adrian also has information on some famous Misterton characters. The distance is around 3½ miles with some uneven ground. His company is approved to take more than six people, but numbers are limited to 20. To book, e-mail talksandtours@gmail.com or call Maggy on 07950 167 821. The cost is £7.50.

The coordinator of the Misterton based Five Villages First Responder scheme has received praise and recognition from the local community and TV celebrities after being nominated for a surprise "One Big Thank You" as part of BBC1's The One Show. Martyn Johnson got more than he was expecting when he arrived for a recent team training evening. Little did he know that Community First Responder Karen Hibbert had nominated him to receive the accolade for his voluntary dedication to the team and his local community. Karen said: "I nominated Martyn because he has been leading our responding group since 2004, he manages the team, he leads our training, organises all our equipment and raises funds too. I think he will be very modest when he receives the surprise, but I hope he will be really pleased too." The surprise thank you aired on The One Show on BBC1 on Thursday 6th May 2021. Viewers saw Martyn arrive at what he thought was a routine training session at Misterton's Fire Station. The evening started with the First Responder team watching what Martyn was led to believe was a training DVD, but he soon realised all was not as it seemed when TV presenter and former police officer, Rav Wilding, sprang the surprise over a live video link. Hidden cameras and microphones had been planted in the room and Rav shocked Martyn by suddenly thanking him for all his work, saying: "Martyn you have been providing lifesaving treatment for the last 17 years and on behalf of everyone at the The One Show I just want to thank you for all your amazing work." The messages of thanks came thick and fast, including from friends and long-standing members of the FVFR team Libby Stennett and Mary Riches, as well as from Mick Barnett-Connolly Head of Community Response for East Midlands Ambulance, who thanked Martyn on behalf of the service for everything he had done. There was hardly a dry eye in the house when Misterton resident Rebecca Ford then thanked Martyn on behalf of her family for the time when he responded to her baby nephew. She said: "6 years ago my beautiful baby nephew was lifeless and in distress, but without you being so selfless and responding and giving him the vital oxygen that he needed, that night could have been completely different." Rebecca went on to say that he is now a fit and active 6-year-old boy and was in fact enjoying playing a football match. The former Misterton resident and Martyn's friend since childhood, Peter Potter, also appeared on the show to give his thanks too. Peter described how he had been injured when he returned to Misterton to play in a sporting match last August and had experienced Martyn's care firsthand at the scene of the accident. "I landed headfirst and broke my neck and fractured my skull, and without Martyn being there I don't know how different things may have turned out," said Peter in an emotional message. Of his "One Big Thank You," Martyn said: "I am shocked, overwhelmed and very, very humbled to receive such a lovely surprise. I have enjoyed every minute of the last 17 years volunteering alongside such a fantastic and dedicated group of people. We are a close-knit team, and it is a pleasure to work with them all. Without all their hard work and devotion to the community and without all the support we receive locally, none of what we do could happen, so this thank you is for everyone." Martyn went on to say: "A huge thank you to Karen for nominating me, the entire FVFR team, my family and friends for the work they have done behind the scenes to keep it all secret and to make this wonderful surprise happen, as well as Misterton Fire Station for their continued support and for hosting us on the night." The Five Villages First Responder team are always on the lookout for support and for new volunteers who would like to become Community First Responders. For more information, see the website www.fvfr.co.uk or the teams page on Facebook. AND THERE WE HAVE IT, our traffic light system is in place for travel, and we can indeed travel from 17 May 2021 for leisure purposes, admittedly. not too many th

‘touristy’ places but I am sure there is rhyme and reason behind our Government's plan and as much as I would love my clients to be jetting off to the Maldives, Mexico, Tunisia, and the Canaries to name but a few that have plans in place, it is not to be. We will get there in ‘baby steps’. The countries we can travel to will be reviewed on a three-weekly basis, which is good news and I think we may revert back to the old days of ‘late deals’, so give me a call if you are looking for a holiday WHEN more destinations are readily available. Every day we have news that more will be added, and it is rumoured Spain will be open to UK tourists from 20 May BUT we will have to await our Government's thoughts. th

There is going to be copious amounts of testing regardless and although this can be costly, time consuming and a little stressful, it is the way forward until we hear further or globally have a better position with COVID19. Hays Travel now has a contract in place with a testing company offering tests from £49 each, so give me a call to order/book your Covid PCR test for travel. Also download the NHS app in readiness as this is going to be the way to show and prove your vaccination status for travel in the future or alternatively seek a letter from your GP when you have had both vaccines.

Please do head to my page on Facebook www.facebook.com/luanthornhillathaystravel to keep up to date with travel news or give me a call on 01427 333013

Getting better - we can open again soon! Here at Epworth Old Rectory, we are working hard to get it already for opening again after the 17th of May, when the Covid restrictions are eased again. We have really missed seeing all our visitors and welcoming them into the Old Rectory. We are a Covid Safe certificated center. Initially we will only be opening on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, from 11am to 3pm, and for prebooked groups. Not that we've been completely without visitors for the last six months, because our gardens are always open with free access anyway, and quite a few people have been into them and had fun looking through the windows at the pictures the staff have been putting up, participating in the Easter trail looking for clues to find the stamps to enter the competition to win an Easter Egg, and making a trail round the house with beautifully painted pebbles, and even just coming in and sitting quietly in the peaceful seclusion of the Physic Garden. The Black Hebridean sheep in the croft behind the house have had lots of visitors as well. The gift shop is freshly cleaned and polished and the shelves re-stocked with all the great gifts and books with many of the items not available anywhere else. The secondhand book section in the Refectory will also be ready for the avid readers, and I know there are quite a few of those here in the Isle of Axholme. Plans are afoot for a limited number of events which may be a little different from our normal ones as the lockdown and restrictions have made it difficult to plan too far ahead for anything. There is a new MWIB exhibition in the house and plans for other exhibitions of needlework to come later in the year. Other events will be advertised once the final decisions are made and full information will be posted on our website and Facebook page. For further information on opening times and days, please see our website, and if you have a half day of free time and think you might like to try volunteering do call us.
