Welcome to the June issue of Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow This month I’m looking forward to spending more time outdoors with family and friends, as we hopefully see the weather improving, as we head towards the longest day on the 21st June! At last The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations are here. I hope there are lots of community events and activities happening in the villages: street parties, picnics, concerts, tea dances. What ever you decide to do, celebrate in style. I would love to receive some photos of the day so we can publish them in the next issue. Epworth Music day is back, a great day of all types of music in the day and evening, make sure you support this local event and its all FREE. I hope you all have a great extended bank holiday weekend and let the sun shine upon us! Enjoy the read. The deadline for the July issue is Friday 10th June for delivery by the 1st of the month.

Community News Epworth Music Day 2022 – We’re back on Saturday 18th June! We are putting the final pieces together for another great day of celebrating live music. In the daytime there’ll be over 80 hours of free music from 10am to 5pm in 13 venues around Epworth, featuring over 50 different groups and performers of all types of music. All this is free. This year we will be closing the roads in the centre of Epworth, and we hope that this will add to the atmosphere. As well as the daytime programme, there will be 4 separate concerts in Epworth on Saturday evening to round off a stupendous day’s music and entertainment: The music at the Queen’s Head will continue after the daytime sets, with a further 3 rock bands. Music will finish earlier there this year. At 7pm there will be a concert with 6 different groups – again of all types of music – performing in St Andrew’s Church. Music will continue at the White Bear until 8pm. A blues band will be playing in The Old School Inn at 8pm. Finally, in the Imperial Hall an evening ceilidh starts at 7.30pm. All 4 concerts and the ceilidh are free; no tickets are needed. Full details of the performers and the daytime and evening programmes will be available at www.epworthmusicday.com and will be available on the day. You can also follow us on our Facebook page. We would still welcome a few more stewards to help on the day – for however much time you can give. If you think you could help, please contact John Lambert on jrlambert@doctors.org.uk Epworth Music Day 2022 - it should be another grand day out! Spread the word!

On the weekend of the 7th and 8th May, 1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts had their first overnight camp in two years. It was great fun, though exhausting! A small group of scouts and senior scouts went to Nidderdale for the weekend, staying in Summerbridge Church hall. The focus on Saturday was practicing our navigation, using map and compass to follow pre-planned routes from Summerbridge to Brimham Rocks. We had to pay close attention to landscape features and take bearings as the footpaths in the Yorkshire Dales are not always well signposted. Taking turns leading the map-reading was a good way to work on our teamwork. This is excellent training for the scouts, and sets up later adventures where they are encouraged to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Award, at all levels from Bronze to Gold. After Lunch at Brimham Rocks we played Hide and Seek and enjoyed some low level bouldering on the rocks. We walked back to the hall as one big team and then the scouts helped prepare the evening meal. After tea, a debriefing of what we had done on the walk allowed the scouts to reflect on the day’s achievements. Games like unihockey, a made-up twist on volleyball followed before supper and setting up for sleep. Sunday was packed full of activities. Cooking breakfast, making lunches, clearing up and packing away were all done by 9:30am and then we headed to Stump Cross Cavern. These caves have been open since the 1860’s and there were fascinating rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites and some well-preserved fossils. A new feature were UV torches that showed off the calcite deposits which glowed in very eerie colours. We then viewed an art installation called Caldicott Cut; a huge, spiralling stone structure overlooking an enormous 30 hectare quarry. Close by are the remains of a lime kiln which was explored by the scouts. After lunch in a Harrogate play-park we headed to Knaresborough Swimming pool for their inflatable session. This was small but challenging with races interrupted by splashing lifeguards who saw the Scouts’ competitive spirit. There was just enough time for a quick snack before piling into cars for the journey back to Westwoodside Village Hall, full of stories for our families. There are spaces available in Scouts and Cubs. The 1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts meet in Westwoodside village hall on Monday nights from 7-8:30. The Wolf Cub group meets in the same hall on Mondays from 6-7:30. Currently we are operating a waiting list for Beavers, but are looking for a Leader to take on this younger group. If you are interested in helping, contact Gregor on: ggibb79@aol.com

Haxey C of E Primary School News On Friday 22nd April 28 members of Haxey School choir travelled to Sheffield to take part in the Young Voices concert. We were able to sing with over 4000 children from other schools, including 10 children from West Butterwick school, who travelled on the bus with us. We spent the afternoon rehearsing with the conductor and band, then after eating our tea we performed the concert for an absolutely packed arena, including many of our families and friends. We sang a wide range of music, beginning with O Fortuna, from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. There was also a medley from The Lion King, a Beatles medley, a Muppets medley and many others. As it was a special concert celebrating 25 years of Young Voices concert, we sang some old favourites from over the 25 years, including one of the favourite songs of Haxey school – Power In Me. The concert was hugely enjoyable. There were soloists and dancers, amazing lighting effects and a group called The Beatbox Collective, who taught us all how to beatbox. After an amazing concert we were still very excited and many of us spent the journey back still singing! It was a very long day, but was absolutely worth it!

Haxey Library Do you depend on charity Shops and low cost book sellers to supply your reading needs? If you do, why not consider joining Haxey Library? It costs you nothing, apart from what you pay in Council Tax. You can borrow books, fiction and non-fiction, for three weeks for nothing. Are you interested? If so, take a note of our opening hours listed below. You will find us tucked in at the end of the Memorial Hall, almost opposite the Coop. To become a member all you need to do is bring an item of identity, i.e. Driving Licence, utility bill or passport just to prove who you are and that you live at the address that you have supplied. Once you are a member you can also get E books for your E book reader by downloading books onto your device by using ‘Borrow Box.’ Simple instructions are available in the Library. Again, this is free! You can also borrow Audio books, free of charge. These come in a CD or digital format. A range of novels are available from romance to Action Stories. The Library is ‘manned’ by volunteers which does mean that the library is only open at the times given, however, if you have time to spare why not consider becoming a ‘volunteer.’ Training is given and you would initially be working with a volunteer who already is familiar with the system. By volunteering you would offer the possibility of increasing the number of opening times, thereby helping us to further provide an opportunity to increase the reading experience of the community. If you are interested please contact one of us during opening hours and we will give you further details.

Opening Hours Monday, 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday, 9 a.m. until 12 noon Friday, 9 a.m. until 12 noon Saturday, 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Back with a Bang - Isle Choral Singers Spring Concert The Isle choral Singers first concert since the beginning of Covid took place at St Andrew's Church in Epworth on Saturday the 23rd of April, with a mixed programme from world renowned composers of choral music, including such names as Bach, Handel, Sibelius, Elgar, Martin Shaw and Karl Jenkins. There was a good number of people in the audience who welcomed the choir back with some enthusiasm, which increased with each piece of music performed. The church made a lovely backdrop for all the music, the audience appreciation was clearly to be seen, and heard, with the volume of applause which ensued, until the last piece which was a late addition to the programme, a rendition, in Ukranian, of the Ukrainian national anthem by Anna, a member of the choir who has a parent who is Ukranian. The church fell totally silent, until the end when a burst of applause broke out and quite a few faces had the handkerchief to the eyes to wipe away the tears it had created. The performance ended with votes of thanks from Penny, and Susan, who quite truly said performance was proof that the choir really was back, and with a bang! light refreshments were enjoyed by both choir and audience as they mingled in the church. Rehearsals for the summer concert, which is planned for July 9th at St Nicholas Church in Haxey, have already started and will be continuing weekly on Monday evening in the Imperial Hall in Epworth at 7pm. Anyone, particularly a few more males for the tenor and bass sections, as well as you ladies out there, who are interested in finding out more, and may decide they would like to try singing with the choir are welcome to go along to the hall on any Monday or look on the choirs website for more information, www.islechoralsociety.com. Remember, anyone can sing, and music is good for the soul and mental wellbeing.
