Since their takeover, they’ve worked hard along with their staff to develop both the centre cosmetically and in it’s product range. Their latest project, the new café, has been a long awaited addition. ‘We wanted to take the business forward and the café was the ideal choice’, said Byron. Called Citrus Café, their inspiration came from the trees that now decorate the café and wanting to create a ‘relaxed
shoppers retreat’, with a Mediterranean feel. The café serves good quality everyday food from breakfasts, sandwiches, paninis, cakes and scones, to larger hot lunches and freshly ground coffee. There is also an area for customers who wish to enjoy drinks and light refreshments - with more comfortable seating and furnished as a lounge area. ‘You don’t have to be a gardener to enjoy what we have to offer’ says Byron. They have extended the centres gift section, as well as their wide variety of plants, shrubs and trees, wild bird food and accessories - all at very competitive prices. ‘We’ve so much more than we’ve had before, customers just need to come and see for themselves!’

Editors Letter.... Spring is in the air, or is it! At the time of me writing this editorial the weather forecast was still bitter cold and more threat of snow on the way. Did you know that Winter ends with March, and the arrival of Spring begins on the 20th March. March can feel either wintry or springy, with as many blustery days as mild sunny days; lets hope for the latter this Spring. I'm looking forward to photographs of the first spring lambs from Jill Carr at Harvester Farm, hopefully in future issues she will be sharing them with you all. Mothers Day, Sunday March 14th. News, News, News, News, News, News, News... Some 45 members of the Epworth Men’s Society met at the town‘s Mowbray Arms pub on Monday night (February 1) to take part in their annual games night. This consisted of knock-out competitions of darts, dominoes and whist, which were all preceded with a pie, chips and mushy peas meal. The eventual winners were: darts: Bob Briggs of Fieldside, Epworth; dominoes: John Needham of Newland Avenue, Epworth, and whist: Stuart Taylor of Beltoft Road, Epworth. The Society‘s next meeting is on Monday, March 1, at the town‘s Ivy Andrew‘s Room, adjacent to the town‘s St Andrew‘s Church. It will consist of a talk entitled Zeppelins Etc, which will be given by organisations president, Ken Turner, and starts at 7.30pm. The Society is always interested in attracting new members and anyone wanting to find out more is asked to telephone its speakers‘ secretary, Ken Bickerstaff, on (01427) 872288.
500 Bunnies to run across Town Field for Children’s Charity on Easter Weekend The event, dubbed ―Doncaster Bunny Run‖, will take place on Saturday 3rd April at 10.00 am. Up to 500 participants, dressed as bunnies will complete a one mile race in support of South Yorkshire Children‘sCharity, SAFE@LAST (www.safe@last.org.uk). The event is being organised by local recruitment agency, Austin Banks. SAFE@LAST works to help children and young people who are at risk through running away. It aims to intervene to protect them from what they are potentially running towards and what they are running away from. The service was set up in 1998 to support the 1 in 9 children in South Yorkshire that are affected. Since 2005, the charity has worked with over 4000 young people and provides the only secure refuge outside London for under 16 year olds.
The proceeds from the Bunny Run will be used to help SAFE@LAST launch its preventative education program in Doncaster – a program which has already been successfully rolled out in Rotherham. A key part of the education work is the promotion of the charity‘s 24 hour helpline number at local schools - a confidential service which allows young people to discuss their problems and where appropriate access a trained project worker to help them resolve their issue around running away. Event organiser, James Squires of Austin Banks Ltd, states “Having seen SAFE@LAST in action at the Lifewise Centre in Magna, I was disappointed to learn that Doncaster schools were not yet involved and decided to help SAFE@LAST promote its services in the town. The Bunny Run will be the first of two events this year – a family, fun event with an Easter theme where participants can enjoy a one mile fun run, food, drink, entertainment and competitions. Our aim is to attract 500 participants and for each of them to raise a minimum of £10 in sponsorship. As well as raising funds we hope to highlight the benefits of the preventative education work to the relevant authorities in Doncaster. Later in the year, we are planning a white collar boxing event where MDs of Doncaster companies will go head to head in the ring”. Owston Ferry Women's Institute will hold their next meeting on 11th March when we will be having a craft demonstration given by Brigitte Brooks. We meet in the School Room of the Chapel, High Street at 7.30. Refreshments served.
The April meeting of the Isle of Axholme group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust will take place on Thursday April 1st when Eddie Gaunt will be giving us a talk about the local nature reserve at Messingham near Scunthorpe. Eddie is the chairman of the Scunthorpe Area Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust and has been involved with the management of the reserve for many years. Messingham is a reserve with a wide variety of habitats, including woodland, open water and grassland which means that many different plants and animals can be found here. We are hoping to arrange a group visit to the reserve in late spring so that we can see some of these at first hand. Do come along and join us, our meetings are open to anyone; you don‘t have to be a Trust member.

We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff‘s house in Belton. The Isle of Axholme Family History Society was treated to a
different sort of talk at their last meeting. Sue Grafton called her talk ‗Stitching up the Family‘. She brought with her three magnificent embroidered hangings. Each consisted of a 4 inch squares on a burgundy background denoting an aspect of her family history. For instance, a pair of fighting cocks commemorated a less respectable ancestor, while a magnificent ram‘s head indicated a farming branch. Similarly a group of people standing by a boat, ancestors who emigrated. The quality of the work was remarkable, and it had taken her ten years to complete the three hanging panels. It was difficult to believe she was not a professional embroiderer. Many questions were asked of her after her talk and members took advantage of the chance to inspect the hangings at close quarters. The next meeting is on March 25th when the speaker will be Angus Townley on‘ The Hind Family of Crowle. Meetings are held on the 4th Thursday of the month except for August and December at the Methodist Schoolroom, High St. Epworth, at 7-30

The current priorities that the Neighbourhood Team are concentrating on in the South Ward area are:Nethergate, West Woodside – reports have been received that youths are frequenting this area of the village and in some instances causing damage to properties. The times of occurrence fall in the main of an evening and at weekends. Patrols will be in the area at the relevant times in order to provide public re-assurance, crime prevention and to identify and offenders and engage with any youths seen in order to gain intelligence to prevent this type of occurrence happening.

West Butterwick Village Hall – reports have been received that the village hall area of West Butterwick is experiencing nuisance including anti-social behaviour and damage some of which is graffiti. Due to the location of this hall does make it quite an attractive area for groups of youths to gather whilst not using the facilities provided by the hall and when the hall is closed. Patrols will be checking the area and would encourage people to be extra vigilant in particular whilst the dark nights are with us and to report matters to the police at the time they are noticed or if they have any information as to the identity of any offenders. A fine piece of police work recently occurred when a vehicle was stopped and the driver was subsequently arrested for possession with intent to supply drugs. Having searched the address in Owston Ferry police recovered what appears to be cannabis plants being cultivated and also the persons vehicle was seized as it was not insured. The person is currently on bail pending police enquiries. You can contact Humberside Police on 0845 60 60 222 for non-emergency calls. If you feel uncomfortable in calling the police with information about crime, then please consider contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Working with Pc Starbuck is your Police Community Support Officer Susan FAHY, who regularly patrols the South area of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community issues with you. The police station at Epworth also provides a front counter service for two days a week, Mondays and Thursdays, between 9am and 3pm. Please note that the Police Surgery which was held on the First Monday of each month at Haxey Library has been dis-continued for the present time (the surgery in it‘s current format is not being facilitated as we would have hoped). The new style surgeries will soon be published so please await further announcements.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of NAFAS, a flower festival was staged in Westminster Abbey in May 2009. Wendy was fortunate enough to attend this memorable event, entitled ― Rejoice‖. She shared her experience by bringing her DVD memento of the occasion for us to watch. We are grateful to George for coming along and providing the equipment and expertise which enabled us to do this. The DVD content was short but packed with shots of the beautiful surroundings of the Abbey, adorned with flower arrangements, exhibited by NAFAS members from throughout the country. What a wonderful way of celebrating 50 years of flower clubs. Epworth & District Flower Club is 50 years old in March 2011. The business side of the Annual General Meeting revealed that Debbie has planned a forthcoming year of exciting meetings, events and workshops. The new programme starts at the Stephen Jones Community Hall , Haxey on Monday 8th March, at 7.30pm, with a demonstration by Margaret Kingswood from Wakefield, entitled ―TOYS FOR THE BOYS‖. Now that’s one for the imagination!

Westwoodside Playing Field Over the past couple of years, the playing field has seen some quite dramatic changes that, when complete, will transform the site into an exciting facility that will be available to be used and enjoyed by all ages. In 2003, the site was little more than a field with a pavilion and a few pieces of rusty, unsafe play equipment that attracted very few people. The playing field committee decided to survey the children of the village to find out what they most wanted from their playing field and the results showed overwhelmingly that a new play area was their number 1 priority with a multisports court coming a close second. The committee set about obtaining designs and costing and trying to raise the necessary funding but it was not until planning permission was granted in 2007 that the work of turning hopes into reality really began. With help from North Lincolnshire Council, almost £100,000 of Lottery funding was secured to allow us to commence Phase 1 and a new, modern play area was installed in July 2008. Since then, the previously deserted site has become much more lively with parents & toddlers calling in on their way home from school and small children and youths now have a great meeting place. In addition, Westwoodside Rangers FC have based their two junior football teams at the field, making use of the best Senior and Junior pitches in the area and excellent changing facilities in the pavilion. We have not been resting on our laurels since then, as we have been working hard to try and raise the funds for Phase 2, the multi-sports court and work on this began in January. Once again, we are indebted to the Lottery, N. Lincs. Council and the Northern Lincolnshire LEADER Programme for providing the majority of the funding. We must also thank Haxey Parish Council who continue to give us excellent support and have provided funds towards the project. Although funds are still needed to pay for the floodlighting, the building work has progressed well despite the difficult, snowy conditions and by the time this goes to print, the facility should be completed. It is intended to have the court open to all during the day and once the lighting is installed, bookings will be able to be made for playing 5-a-side football, basketball, tennis, hockey, netball and short cricket. Did You Know... Enid Blyton was born in London in 1897. She trained as a kindergarten teacher. Her first book was Child Whispers, it appeared in 1922. In 1924 she was then asked to write the Enid Blyton book of Fairies. The Whispering Chair first appeared in 1937. The first Amelia Jane book appeared in 1939. Enid Blyton only became a household favourite in the 1950@s with the publication of Noddy. Enid Blyton’s health deteriorated in the early 1960’s and she sadly died in 1968. At its February meeting Haxey W.I. celebrated its 80th anniversary with an excellent dinner which was supplied by the local caterer, Mrs Sandra Bishop. Mrs Norma Williams gave the opening address and welcomed members and guests. This was followed with a short speech by the Federation Chairperson, Julia Green, saying she was very pleased to see so many members present and wished Haxey W.I. a long and continued successful future. The beautiful celebration cake was made by committee member Judith Favell-Plant and decorated by Haxey W.I. member, Hilary Jordan. 2010 Haxey Parish Photographic Competition Good prizes are on offer in this year‘s Competition. There are only a few weeks to go before the closing date so why not start snapping and preparing your entries. £50 Children primary school age £50 Children Secondary School age £75 Adults £50 Camera Club members Basic rules for the competition are as follows:All entries must have been taken after the 1st January 2009. Entrants for the Adult and Children's section must live in Haxey Parish. The minimum size of each print not to be less than 7" x 5". Entries to be left at Haxey Library between 29th March and 12th April. All entries must have the "Title of the Print and the name, address and phone number of the author printed on paper and then glued onto the back of the Photograph. Further details from John Smedley 01427 752199 or George Fiddler 01427 754117 Speeding Traffic in Haxey Parish Speeding traffic is a major concern throughout Haxey Parish and the Parish Council has regularly been in communication with North Lincolnshire Council Safer Roads Team and Humberside Police about this road safety issue. There has been some success in reducing speeding traffic following surveys, traffic monitoring and speed camera monitoring, however, reductions in speed are generally temporary and Parishioners regularly raise this topic which is high on their list of priorities for action. The Safer Roads Team has installed flashing vehicle activated signs on the A161 at Haxey Lane and Epworth Road and speeding surveys were carried out on Akeferry Road and Doncaster Road. These surveys showed that on Akeferry Road the average number of vehicles per day was 2112 and of these, on average, the number of offenders per day was 1235, this means the total offending rate over 35mph was 58%, also more than 30 vehicles a day travelled in excess of 55mph. In the case of Doncaster Road on average about 500 vehicles per day exceeded 45mph and about 20 vehicles a day exceeded 60mph out of an average per day of 3712 vehicles. In order to address this problem, the Parish Council has hired two vehicle activated flashing signs for a 6 month period and one has been installed on Akeferry Road and one on Doncaster Road. They have been strategically located with the approval of NLC Safer Roads Team on selected lighting columns and it will be possible to turn them around after 3 months to pick up traffic travelling in the opposite direction. As well as ‗flashing‘ the actual speeds at which vehicles are travelling, these signs collect data on vehicle numbers, dates and times and speeds. The dates and times are recorded to allow police patrol vehicles to be placed at specific times to observe repeat offenders. We hope that when this data is retrieved it will show that they have had the desired effect of reducing speeding in the Parish.

THE SAXONS AND SCANDINAVIANS IN THE ISLE OF AXHOLME By the end of the 4th century the Roman Empire was under attack in Eastern Europe. Troops were withdrawn from exposed limbs of the Empire to defend the centre of the Empire. Roman soldiers finally left Britain in 410 A.D. thus leaving Britain unprotected against any invaders. Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians from North Germany, Denmark and Holland had been raiding the east coast during the Roman occupation. Now the Romans had gone, the way was open for invasion and settlement by them. They used the waterways of eastern England for an easy passage into inner England. Many appear to have settled in the Isle of Axholme. The best evidence of this is prosettlement with the place name ending ”ton” meaning farmstead and “ham” meaning a homestead or village such as Burnham, Belton, Luddington and Owston Ferry. The name Axholme is derived from two Anglo-Saxon words Axel meaning town and holme meaning island. The name Epworth comes from the Saxon name Heapeurde with Heape meaning a small hill and urde meaning a farm. As the Anglo-Saxon settlement intensified so small kingdoms were set up. The Isle of Axholme was a frontier area between the Kingdoms of Northumbria to the north and Mercia to the south and the area has been described as “a common theatre of contention and bloodshed”. In 653 Penda, King of Mercia passed through the Isle on his way to invade Northumbria then ruled by Edwin. A great battle was fought at Hatfield where Edwin was routed and killed. Nine years later Penda again attacked Northumbria. This time King Oswald of Northumbria was killed. It seems possible that he actually died at Burnham. For connected with him is the story of the Holy Well. Afterwards the well was reputed to have healing properties and at annual feast times children and others were brought to be healed. The Churches at Crowle and Althorpe are dedicated to Oswald.

Farming in the Isle at Harvester Farm, Epworth. The weather has dictated many of our activities on the farm this month. The sheep have been moved to fresh grazing ensuring that they have plenty of good grass, so that they are in the best condition ready for lambing. Many of the ewes are looking fairly round so hopefully we will have lots of lambs in the next 6-7 weeks .The rams have been returned to the a paddock nearer the farm and have settled into a more quieter way of life (no more stress from all those ―women‖!!), and seem to be enjoying each others company again after 2 months with all the ewes.

The cattle have had their annual visit from the foottrimmer, Marcus, who spent a very busy day carrying out essential treatment on all the cows and the bull making sure that all their hooves were free from any infections, then cutting and grinding back any excess growth. We had very few problems and hopefully we should be free from any foot problems for the rest of the year.

It has been a busy month in the cattle yards as we have had 2 new arrivals. Firstly, Twiggy gave birth to a little black heifer, she is a very protective and carrying mum, much to the annoyance of the twins who wanted to play, only to get a biff from mum if they came too close. Secondly Buttermilk (aka Butters) gave birth to the most beautiful ginger bull calf who already has‖ attitude‖ as he struts around. All the calves are now running about in a ―gang‖ spending their time either drinking, sleeping or getting up to mischief e.g. sticking our heads through the gates and blowing bubbles in the water-trough. The Dexter beef sales have been keeping us extremely busy – I can now identify a sirloin steak from a rump steak with my eyes closed. It is very satisfying to receive all the compliments from our customers who are enjoying their meat.

Trentside Confederation Newsletter At last the weather is beginning to improve! St Martin‘s football team are back training for their forthcoming matches. Good luck team!! The Nursery children at St Martin‘s have loved jumping in puddles and making puddle pictures. They have had great fun making dens in their classroom as part of their work on light and dark. In fact the den was so dark, warm and invited I could have spent the whole day in there!
Make 2010 a more profitable year...
The foundation stage at West Butterwick had a great time walking around the village looking at all the different houses and buildings. Year One and Two children designed and built some amazing houses, very impressive work. Key Stage Two have continued with their French and their descriptions of an elephant, all written in French are, tres bien!! (The children‘s‘ French is a lot better than mine I‘m afraid) Both schools came together just before the half term break to take part in a Circus Skills Workshop. The staff and children all had a fun and enjoyable time. Mr Green (Year 5 and 6 teacher at St Martin‘s) organised the day, thank you Mr Green from everyone! The children were able to experience different circus skills including juggling, balancing plates on sticks and riding the unicycle. The teachers and TA‘s prepared other workshops where children worked together to create a large collage, used the ICT suite to develop their computer skills, did some creative writing and maths activities. Mr Green and Miss Foreman (teachers from St Martin‘s) are busy in rehearsals for the schools summer production of Bugsy Malone. The singing coming from the hall on a Monday evening is fabulous!! Mr Cross (Key Stage Two teacher at West Butterwick) has created the C.T.A. group. This stands for the Children, Teacher Association. Children from both key stages have come together in order to plan and organise fundraising events. The first event was a very enjoyable Valentines Disco, keep up the good work. The South Yorkshire Charity Ploughing Match is being held on Sat 27th and Sun 28th March 2010. It is a charity event raising funds for the British National Ploughing Match being held in Lincoln next October. The event will be held at Lindholme (the old airfield behind Lindholme Prison) by kind permission of HM Prison Service Lindholme & Ken & David Chappell and over 100 ploughmen, including previous National, European and World Champions, are expected each day, with horses, vintage tractors and modern equipment. David Chappell is celebrating 50 years of competing in ploughing competitions by organising a weekend of events. He won his first contest in October1960 and has had 1st places every year since and has represented England at the World Contest on 3 occasions. At the contest, ploughmen must plough 1/2 acre in 4 hours, the judges will look for straight, level furrows with all the stubble buried to achieve a clean level seedbed for the next crop and all the trash buried and sealed firmly in to prevent the carry over of weeds and diseases. A well ploughed field needs less fertiliser, less chemicals and uses less fuel to achieve a better crop, than a poorly ploughed field. The plough was invented 4000 years ago and has been gradually improved and ploughmen at this event will demonstrate the ancient art of using a plough to create the perfect seedbed. The terrible winter weather caused Axholme Camera Club to cancel the first two meetings of the New Year. The programme has been rearranged to include the AVs at a later stage. However, the snowy conditions enticed a number of members to attend the Hood this year, evidenced by photographs entered in the fifth competition. The title 'People' gave members a broad spectrum, and there were portraits to crowd scenes entered. The judge, local man Ray Bramall FRPS, chose Alan Rowsell's beach scene in monochrome for 20 marks, with Andy Kershaw and new member David Nelmes close behind with 19 each. Judy Newton, awarded 'Most Improved Member' last year, came in with 18 marks. Remembrance of times In the colour section,Geoff Trinder gained 20 marks for his cheeky gang of past by Andy Kershaw youngsters, Allan Rowsell, Andy Kershaw and David Ulyett with 19s and 18s. Braving the cold damp conditions, thirteen members attended a Falconry Photography day at Sturton by Stow. Thankfully the heavy rain of the previous day had passed, but left the ground waterlogged. This did not spoil a fantastic day of photography, with Lewis, Mick and Paul, the bird handlers doing a splendid job, Lewis also giving expert tips on how to get the best results. Everyone came home with some good photographs of the birds, a Corus Swim by Andy Kershaw Barn Owl, Charlie, an Eagle Owl, Horace, and a Harris Hawk, Hedgerow, who all flew , and others who perched in trees patiently posing. Horace, a veteran at these events, even joined members in the clubhouse for lunch, enjoying a flapjack, much to his owner's surprise! They are all bird's of prey, of course, and he'd never been known to eat anything like a flapjack before. Lewis, a professional photographer, who took up falconry as a hobby, can be found on www.wildshotsfalconry.co.uk. ' Lost in the Crowd' by Andy Kershaw Member Geoff Trinder LRPS treated fellow members, visitors and guests to a superb show 'Highlands and Islands' with projected images of Scottish landscapes and wildlife, including some birds rarely seen. With the usual high standard of photography and interesting commentary, all present enjoyed a pleasant and entertaining evening. Coming up in March, Parry Jenkins will be presenting his 'Musical Tour' with projected images and presumably, music, on 3rd at Haxey Church Hall, 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the show. There will be a small door charge, £1.50, to include refreshments. Similarly, George Fiddler will present ' Canada and Alaska' on 30th. On 9th images from the Royal Photographic Society's Nature Group Exhibition will be shown. Everyone is welcome to attend these, too.

Surviving Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) - a guide for law-abiding drivers. Dear Readers, Police using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems may pull over drivers who consider themselves law-abiding citizens alongside hardcore criminal drivers. Number-plates obscured by dirt or with incorrect letter and number spacing, that can‘t be read by ANPR camera, may be flagged up as suspect registrations and police sent in pursuit. Number-plates that have been stolen or cloned by criminals and used to evade prosecution for speeding, illegal parking, insurance and other offences may also land the registered car owners in trouble. And then there may be inaccuracies and delays in the data used to identify rogue cars. For their part, drivers need to appreciate that the need to keep their number-plates street legal has never been so great, and that failure to do so is more likely to bring prosecution for a Construction and Use offence. "Whereas, in the past, police officers may have unofficially turned a blind eye to number-plates covered in mud or customised registrations unless they needed to stop a car, ANPR may mean that the days of the fancy or dirty plate are numbered. "ANPR helps police to catch illegal vehicles and drivers together at the roadside, whereas clamping and removing rogue cars, although taking them out of circulation, rarely catches up with offenders who simply buy another cheap vehicle. However, there will be other drivers, whose number-plates are obscured or cloned, who may be caught in the net." £110 From the point of view of police and other enforcement agencies, that any inaccuracies in data records held by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and any time lag in recording changes in motorist‘s circumstances may end up with drivers being caught by ANPR. "Sometimes, wrong information is fed on to the DVLA database by car owners, who may make mistakes or by criminals who try to create a false record. With so many sources of data, such as from post offices, MOT test centres, insurance companies and people who have sold cars privately, it is critical that it is all timely and accurate now that enforcement increasingly hinges on these records.
