Editors Letter… In this months issue we have tributes for Lex Strong, the brave little boy of Epworth who was taken away on 25th January. I have read the amazing tributes on his FB page and I, with a 6 year old myself cannot imagine how parents feel when they lose a child. I shed many tears this month, I haven't met Lex or his family but that’s just how he touched so many hearts. March brings Mothers Day on the 11th March and Red Nose Day on the 15th March. Did you know Comic Relief is an operating British Charity founded in 1985 by Richard Curtis and comedian Lenny Henry in response to famine in Ethiopia! The highlight of Comic Relief’s appeal is Red Nose Day. One Direction will record the official single for this year, a cover of Blondie's ‘One Way or Another’
If anyone has any events planned for Red Nose Day please send in your photos.

Wizard of Oz 8 years ago a small group of enthusiastic locals decided that it would be a good idea to stage a Pantomime for the residents of Wroot. They had no money, no stage, no props, no lighting, and no costumes; in fact they had nothing with which to produce a pantomime. Very quickly it became apparent that there was a huge amount of talent in this small village, and initially with a small band of volunteers and hard workers, things started to take shape. Wroot Amateur Players was formed and produced the very first Pantomime. That is now in the dim and distant past as this January the 8 th Pantomime “The Wizard of Oz” was produced over four nights, once again to great acclaim. Unfortunately the snow did prevent some people making it to the show, but those who did turn up made very good audiences. Once again children from Wroot Travis School appeared in the production and we have a great bunch of junior thespians there! Today everything concerned with the pantomime comes from within the village from the team who write the pantomime, the people who produce it, the sound engineer, stage manager, stage assistants, scenery painter, costume maker, choreographer and last but not least the performers themselves. The cast and production team voluntarily give their time and energies to make all this possible and we would like to acknowledge their generosity and dedication to a cause which hopefully gives pleasure to the residents of the village, their relatives and friends. It is often difficult to appreciate how much time and effort goes into the behind the scenes preparations for these productions. Work is already underway in preparation for January 2014 and the 9th Pantomime which will be Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. We look forward to seeing you all there enjoying yourselves. The AGM for Wroot Amateur Players will take place in the Village Hall at 7pm Tuesday 26th March, anyone who would like to be involved please come along and join us everyone is welcome.

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No. 9 by Anthony Catherall
Curtain Up Tonight. That most pleasant of sounds- the ripple of chuckles echoed through the Imperial Hall during the production of “The Blue Goose” presented on 13 -16 March 1957. The play deals with a family of the borough treasurer whose wife is “operatic” in the true Pamela Russell tradition- only she’s serious about it. As Mrs Portal, the mother, Ella Dempster played with magnificent élan. But she could not have carried the play, without good support from her fellow players. The entire action took part in the Portal’s lounge in their house on a low cliff somewhere along the South Coast. Marjorie Trimingham then 43 years of age, (was an Infant School Teacher where School Close is now), today June 2011 she is aged 97 still with a great smile was now coming into her own as one of the stalwarts and indeed a very competent actress, excellent at learning her lines and giving that little bit extra on the stage. Here she played Anna Portal (the Borough Treasurers Elder Daughter) and loved every minute of the three acts. Two new faces appeared on the stage Audrey Till (Margaret, a maid) and Bob Robinson (Charlie Rogers a junior Clerk)
Left to right; G. Haddon Archer (Henry Portal the Borough Treasurer) Joyce Battye (Louise Portal) M. Clifford Trimingham (Hubert Briggs the mayor) Marjorie Trimingham (Anna Portal) Continued next month – Make sure you see a copy of the Arrow

Haxey Parish Council, Newsletter, March 2013 Parish Clerk - Deb Hotson Email: haxeypc@live.co.uk Postal Address: Haxey Memorial Hall, High Street, Haxey, DN9 2HH Telephone: 01652 618306 / 0784 220 1877 Website: www.haxeyparish.org.uk
Precept 2013/14 Haxey Parish Council Finance Committee met on 19 November 2012 to discuss the Council’s planned commitments and accounts and to decide a precept for 2013/2014 to be recommended to the full Council. The Finance Committee resolved unanimously to recommend a precept for the next year of £35,000. National Government directives which changed the way that Principal Authorities funded Council Tax Benefit, in that only 90% of the benefit would be funded from Westminster from April 2013, necessitated North Lincolnshire Council (NLC) to review how this 10% shortfall would be funded. For the coming year, Haxey Parish Council met the criteria set out by NLC for it to receive the complete parish precept without any deduction for Council Tax Benefit and the full Parish Council therefore accepted the Finance Committee’s precept recommendation at its January 2013 meeting. This is the fourth year that the Haxey Parish precept has been maintained at £35,000 and the Parish Council remains committed to implementing opportunities for making savings and providing residents with value for money, whilst continuing to maintain the services it currently provides to the community and the parish. Grass Cutting Tender Tenders are invited in writing for grass cutting of St. Nicholas Churchyard (closed) and the Greenhill, Haxey. Tenders should provide two quotes, one for 11 cuts including the removal of all grass cuttings and two cuts of the central area (Churchyard (closed)) and a quote for the individual price of one cut and removal of all grass cuttings. For further details contact the Clerk. Hanging Basket & Planter Tenders Tenders are also invited to prepare and display the hanging baskets and planters located around the village. There are 13 hanging baskets, 9 troughs & 2 concrete planters which are located at Haxey Cof E Primary School. For further details please contact the Clerk. Both tenders to be sent in separate sealed envelope marked in the bottom left hand corner “Grass Cutting or Hanging Baskets”. To:- The Clerk, Haxey Parish Council, Haxey Memorial Hall, High Street, Haxey, DN9 2HH by 5:00pm on the closing date – Friday 15th March 2013. Westwoodside Playing Fields Association Following the request from the Westwoodside Playing Fields Association (WPFA) Chairman that the Parish Council considers taking on the management responsibility for the Pavilion building and associated areas, Haxey Parish Council discussed the request for support at its November and December 2012 meetings and resolved to accede to the request in principle and to investigate further. On 18 January 2013, the Council’s Land Working Party (LWP) considered an analysis of the governance of the Playing Fields and agreed to make recommendations to the full Council on 22 January 2013. The Full Council accepted the recommendations of the LWP and agreed unanimously that the following is taken forward: (a) Change the Trustee status to Haxey Parish Council. A Council can be the sole Trustee of a Charity. The Councillors are not THE Trustees; it is the corporate body of the Council which has that position. (b) If any support is provided, the WPFA Treasurer duties are carried out by the Council’s Responsible Financial Officer (RFO). when responding to advertisements 20 Please mention “The Arrow”
(c)
After the completion of the process of deciding a general way forward, further consultation with both WPFA and the East Riding and Northern Lincolnshire Local Councils Association (ERNLLCA) is carried out with the aim of producing any detailed changes to the WPFA constitution to enable the Parish Council to provide support.
Following the positive decision by the Full Council on the general way forward, the LWP has now had further consultations with ERNLLCA and has also received written advice from the Charity Commission (CC) with reference to WPFA, which is set out in brief as follows: (a)
(b)
(c)
ERNLLCA was initially concerned about the actual position of the CC in the Trusteeship I ssue; however, the CC has confirmed that the WPFA is registered and the extant Constitution is the 7 May 1992, as amended on 17 April 1996, version. The CC advises that the proposed change of Trusteeship is possible from their perspective as Custodian Trustee. ERNLLCA advises that it should be possible to change the Trustee status by the use of a WPFA extra-ordinary public meeting. The CC confirms this, advising that Clause 12 of the Constitution should be invoked: “Any amendments to the Constitution shall be approved following Resolution at the Annual General Meeting or at a Special General Meeting called for the purpose. The twenty one day’s notice rule will apply. No a lteration shall be made which would cause the Association to be a “Charity at law”. The CC advises that the assets of the charity do not become part of the corporate property of the Parish Council; the Parish Council would simply manage the assets in accordance with the charitable trusts contained in the Constitution.
Now the LWP has this more detailed information, it is in a position to make recommendations on the way forward and sequence of events to the full Parish Council at its February meeting. At going to press date, the following is the draft of those recommendations and sequence of events which are to be considered by the Parish Council on 26 February 2013 with the aim of coming to a decision on providing support to WPFA: (a) (b)
(c) (d) (e) (f)
(g) (h)
WPFA takes independent advice that the proposed Trusteeship change is within its powers set out in the Conveyance and Constitution. WPFA calls an open Extra-Ordinary General Meeting of the Management Committee and Parishioners giving the required 21 day’s notice and the necessary publicity to the Parish. During this period the Parish Council RFO carries out a formal due diligence of WPFA accounts. The one agenda item for the open meeting should be “Proposed Change of WPFA Trustees to Haxey Parish Council”. Following positive support for the change of Trusteeship from the General Meeting, Haxey Parish Council assumes the role of acting Trustee for Westwoodside Playing Fields. The Parish Council RFO assumes responsibility for the WPFA accounts as Treasurer following satisfactory due diligence. The Parish Council establishes a WPFA Working Group within the LWP, nominates a Chairman and Vice-Chairman and co-opts the remains of the outgoing WPFA Management Committee to the Working Group. The Constitution is reviewed and amended as necessary to reflect the new governance. Further advice on the powers of this group will need to be confirmed with ERNLLCA The Parish Council Clerk completes and transmits the CC Charity Amendment Form and following acknowledgement, Haxey Parish Council assumes the Trusteeship of WPFA. The WPFA Working Group commences fund raising activity to upgrade the Pavilion, the access road and the car park, initially obtaining cost estimates for completion of the necessary work.
There remains an urgent need for more community involvement in Westwoodside Playing Fields and pleasein call 01302 or encouraged 07912 643010 21 Residents ofTo theadvertise Parish interested supporting this532676 project are to contact Haxey Parish Council Clerk to volunteer their services to this worthwhile community facility.

Epworth Primary Academy Tribute to Alexander Strong Lex as he was affectionately known by everyone in school was a much loved member of our school family. He started school in September 2009 in the Reception year in Class 1 with Miss Alibhai as his first teacher. and was in four classes in his time with us. In Year 1 he was in Mrs Lewis and Mrs Hepworth’s class. He moved to Class CS in Year 2 with Miss Stanham and Mrs Clayton and Mrs Reilly. In his final class in school he was in Class C with the other Year 3 children. All through school he loved to construct models particularly with lego. This was even seen before he started school when Reception staff visited Lex at his home. Mrs Hepworth remembers his great love of building things that shone through as he showed her his models. Staff also remember his cheeky smile that never left him. Lex would also join in model making by making things at home when he wasn’t well enough to come to school. When the class topic was the Fire of London Lex and his mum made a model of a Tudor house to add to the class display. He was so desperate to get it up on the wall that he badgered Miss Stanham all morning until it was up. Not just anywhere on the display; he didn’t want it next to the fire because he wanted the house to survive. Although Lex was often not able to come to school for long periods following treatment, his class mates always regarded him as part of the class. Lex was very popular with the other children and they really looked forward to him coming back to school. While very young, there was always a competition within the class about who would sit closest to him on the carpet. Later on in Year 2 the children would try to compete with each other to be chosen to stay inside with him at breaktimes to play when he was too ill to play outside. However, Lex would choose different children each day to give lots of his peers a turn. That was typical of Lex to be kind to his friends and think of others.
It was a special occasion as we were joined by TV presenter, Amy Thomson from Milkshake. The children remember his kindness in sharing his cake with them. The children have lovely memories of Lex’s time with them at school. He had lots of friends and played with many of them at home as well as school. The children are thinking about him a lot and have drawn him pictures and written messages. One child wrote, ‘I will miss you. You were kind to me and I liked playing with you.’ Another child wrote, ‘Lex was a true friend. He will be missed and remembered.’ The theme of being missed was reflected on by another child who wrote, ‘we miss you lots in class C. Thank you for the things you did.’ At a time of sadness in school, we have taken comfort in knowing that Lex is out of pain now and in a better place. Lots of children have said that Lex will be happy now. One of his friends said heaven is a nice place so I think he’ll like it there. Lex will always be part of our school. We will never forget his cheeky grin and his bravery and courage – we never heard him complain about his treatment. He is an inspiration to us all and we will remember him with great affection. John Hodgkins Headteacher
Our role is to Protect, Help and Reassure but this was so much more, The Epworth Neighbourhood team were on duty to do the road closures but we all felt this was more than doing our job, It was a privilege to be present on such a sad but incredible day to see so many people say goodbye to such a brave little boy, this day will be remembered not only by us but everyone that as followed Lex and it will be a day Epworth will never forget.
Last year in one of the last occasions he was able to come to school he bought in the cake he was Susan Fahy awarded as Childmention of the Year“The to share with his when responding 24 Please Arrow” classmates.

REMEMBERING There are many other references to Lex (Alexander Strong) in this edition. It was however my privilege to lead the service of thanksgiving for Lex’s life at Wesley memorial Methodist Church at the start of February. It happened to be the church where he was baptised in My 2005. We inherit traditional ways of doing things, and remembering is the same. On Remembrance Sunday we keep silent for a minute. But many of you will know that at the Scunthorpe football match the previous Saturday to Lex’s funeral service there was, instead of silence, a minute of applause. In our service we had this too-and it seemed as if the applause was never going to end. Even better it was not restrained or polite applause, but raw and emotional. It was from and of the heart. This contrasted with the remembering of Lex with the Epworth Brownies. When we sat down in a circle and told each other what was our memory, and our special thought Lex was a Stars Wars fan. I am not, but in the planning of the service my knowledge of Stars Wars increased a hundred fold. So often we struggle to express what we feel in word and language. But God has given us hand and bodies too. We read that there is a time to speak and a time to be silent, but there is a time to clap too. On 5th February our applause was for Epworth’s bravest boy Lex. David Leese, Wesley Manse.

Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice offers care and support to children and young adults with a shortened life expectancy. The hospice is a place filled with laughter and love. We give families the chance to relax, take a break and have fun, and support the whole family. It costs £3 million every year to offer this care. With no statutory government funding, without the help of our supporters we simply couldn’t help all the children that we do.

Westwoodside Church of England School We are very proud of the teaching and learning of Maths (sometimes referred to as Numeracy) at Westwoodside Church of England School, especially as this is a crucial life skill. The children throughout the School will often base their Mathematical learning on practical experience. For example, the Foundation Stage recently completed a ‘Shape Walk’ around the village, looking out for shapes in buildings etc. Also learning about number is often developed through use of practical apparatus. Recently Mrs Wilson’s class have been learning about doubling by using Numicon materials. Parents and Carers can support their children’s Mathematical learning at home by looking for opportunities for counting, shape recognition etc. in everyday life. As the children become older, homework is set to practise addition and subtraction bonds. Later, this homework practice is extended to multiplication and division tables.

On Saturday night 19th January despite the poor frozen and tricky weather conditions over 130 people from far and wide ,including Scotland and Holland, attended a very successful fundraising event put on by the Isle of Axholme Lions at the Haxey village hall. It was a Burns Night Supper in aid of the local Macmillan nurses who do a sterling job and they are much needed and appreciated. We had four excellent speakers and we were attended by the Scunthorpe and District Pipes and Drums who with their rousing music really made the party go with a swing. Lion President James Mackinlay opened the evening with the Selkirk Grace and Danny Shields accompanied by the pipers paraded the Haggis and honoured its presence in the traditional way including toasting the Haggis with a glass of whisky which was very much enjoyed by all. As is tradition the Ladies were toasted by Bruce Bittiner and the response from the Ladies was carried out by Helen Condliff. The immortal memory of Robbie Burns was done extremely theatrically and well enacted by James Mackinlay which was warmly received by a rousing cheer from the audience. Following Danny Shields recital of the Englishman's Nightmare which caused a good reaction from the English present who had been informed in no uncertain way just how many discoveries and inventions have been carried out by the Scots. James Mackinlay gave a very warm thank you to everyone concerned and we finished the evening with Auld Lang Syne. We are pleased to announce that the generosity of all those who attended helped us raise over ÂŁ1500 that we are able to give to the Macmillan nurses. On behalf of the Isle of Axholme Lions we would like to thank everyone who came and a big thank you to those that helped the evening be so successful with great catering, excellent band and very humorous speakers. Anyone wishing to know more about the Lions and what we do please contact Terry Condliff on 01427 753642

Sighting of the Loch Ness Monster by Charlotte Thornton, age 8 St Martin’s School, Owston Ferry The sun was as blazing as a red hot orange fire. I was walking across the beach collecting shells, when a threatening crash beamed in to my ears. I looked to the Loch and then it happened – the water split open like someone cutting a carrot in half. Then it rose from the water in a flash. It had a thousand scales that were all perfectly perfected by a green coat. It had three humps as big as Wii Mountains. They all had razor sharp points as pointy as a blade on a scissor and as yellow as a chick’s feathers. Then it dived casually back into the water like I did not see it. As it did, it snapped its tail and the earth shook with terror.

Adele on the summit of Makalu (8463m) 17th May 2011 her fourth 8000m peak. Adele Pennington the Derbyshire based Mountaineer successfully returned from an expedition to Makalu (8463m), the fifth highest mountain in the world. This is her fourth 8000m peak which makes her Britain’s leading female high altitude climber on the 8000m peaks and the 11th British person to stand on the top of Makalu. Between 2007 and the present day Adele has concentrated her mountaineering efforts on the 8000m peaks. She has stood on the top of Cho-Oyu (8201m), the central summit of Manaslu (8163m) and the top of the world (Everest) twice .. (the first British woman to do so!) - as well as reaching camp II on Shishapangma (8012m) and Gasherbrum II (8035). This year after a serious illness and a battle of survival on Makalu in 2010 Adele returned to face her demons and stood on the summit on the 17th May 2011. When not climbing 8000m peaks Adele runs her own mountaineering business and is a professional speaker and trainer. Next year Adele wishes to embark on a journey to climb all the 8000m peaks (fourteen in total) and therefore be the first British woman to do so. In addition to this Adele wishes to complete the seven summits (highest mountain on each continent) of which she has three summits left to climb. If Adele completes this challenge then she will be the first woman to do

Shake Up Your Wake Up!!! Farmhouse Breakfast Week is an annual celebration championing the importance of a good breakfast and aims to get the nation to “Shake Up Their Wake Up!” According to figures 47% of the population regularly skip breakfast! To promote and celebrate the Farmhouse Breakfast Week the children at Kids at Coneygarth Farm Day Nursery had a special breakfast all week including crossaints, waffles, cereals and pancakes. As a result of this the children in the out of school club have been eager to try different breakfasts even having one at home and one at Coneygarth! Doncaster Advanced Motorist Block Gear Changing &Crash for Cash Scams Dear readers, Block-changing means choosing and changing gear once, instead of working through all the gears. Missing unnecessary gears saves on fuel, as well as wear and tear and saves driver effort. Use your gears to go and your brakes to slow. When slowing on approach to a roundabout or junction, use acceleration sense and/or brakes to decrease speed, and then select the right gear for the speed you are travelling at. This may mean skipping out several gears at once. Gear changes should be made after braking but before turning the steering wheel. Block-changing contributes to a calm and planned driving style. It requires less driver input and so allows more time for other things like looking for problems or reading road signs. A good driver will use the brakes or their acceleration sense to slow down, not the gears. Brake pads are cheaper to replace than clutches, so use the brakes if you need to. When increasing speed, you can save on fuel consumption by skipping out gears, for example perhaps going straight from third to fifth. Crash for cash scams. Crash for cash scams are staged collisions. The one to watch for is when someone deliberately drives dangerously to force a crash so they can make an exaggerated insurance claim. How to avoid them: Always look ahead and anticipate hazards. Keep a safe following distance from the car in front and watch traffic overtaking you so that you are not surprised if it pulls across and brakes in front of you. Beware of tailgaters. The car behind you will try to get your attention so you don’t concentrate on the driver in front. Pay attention to the vehicles around you and if you feel threatened by a tailgater, pull over somewhere safe to let them past. Keep an eye out for local news – criminal gangs doing this tend to use the same locations a lot. Local news can suggest where it is. If you are involved in one, remember: If you’re suspicious, don’t ask them directly about it at the scene. Try to take photos of the damage – discreetly if possible, get a description of the driver and count the number of people in the other vehicle. Take photos discreetly, if possible. If you need the emergency services, call 999. Stay calm. You’ll need to swap details with other drivers. If you are interested in the courses we offer, you’ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk Or Tel: Doncaster 01302 886 276 Safe Driving To advertise call 01302 Paul Tuke.
