Welcome to the March issue of the Arrow. This month we celebrate Mothers Day. Did you know it falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent and Mothering Sunday can fall at the earliest on 1 March (in years when Easter Day falls on 22 March) and at the latest on 4 April (when Easter Day falls on 25 April)? We celebrate buying gifts of chocolate or flowers for our mums as a way to thank them for all they have done for us. So what are you doing this Mothers Day on Sunday 15th March? Make sure you treat your mum to something special. I feel honoured to still have my mum; she is now 84 years old and still as fit if not fitter than me. I haven't quite decided what to do, but the day will be a special one. The deadline for the April issue is Wednesday 11 March. If you would like to advertise our advertising rates start from only ÂŁ20 per month!

The annual Epworth Music Day – a Free music festival - has grown from small beginnings 6 years ago to the hugely popular event of last year with an estimated 1000 people attending from near and far. We are now planning to match or better last year with this year’s activities on Saturday 20th June.

Would YOU like to be involved?

We are looking for friendly enthusiastic lovers of the Isle to stewards the day’s events. Could this be you? By giving up an hour or two, or perhaps the whole day, you would be part of this vibrant event bringing free music of a wide variety to the centre of Epworth. Your role could include welcoming visitors and performers, supervising parking, giving directions and being generally helpful. Those of us who helped last year enjoyed the day, so why not join us and share in the fun? If you are interested in joining us contact John Lambert tel 01427 872466 or email jrlambert@doctors.org.uk.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust News Our next indoor meeting is to be held at The Stephen Jones Hall, Low Street, Haxey on March 5th 2015 A talk and slide show on the Cairngorm National Park in spring. Our guest speaker is Geof Lee We look forward to welcoming all our members and new visitors. For further information please contact Chris Trinder 01427 872051.

MISTERTON MUSIC FESTIVAL It is with deep regret that The Misterton Music Festival will not take place in 2015. The Misterton Driving Range (our ideal site) is unavailable to us forcing us to look for an alternative site. We hoped to secure The Misterton Playing Field with the support of the local Parish Council - but certain conditions/ restrictions made the festival not viable to plan in such a short period of time and for those reasons we had to cancel this year’s event. We thank Misterton Parish Council, Wayne Howe, The Misterton Driving Range, and everyone who helped make this such a fantastic community event plus of course everyone who came - Many thanks –We hope to secure another site in the future .Epworth Music Day.

The Parish Council as Trustees of the Playing Fields and the Westwoodside Playing Fields Management Committee actively supported the charity event and assisted with the preparations, which included the setting up and fitting out for the night of a large marquee behind the Foreman Carter Centre. The night was a huge success raising £5000 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospital and a further £5000 to Charity and needy projects across the Isle of Axholme. The Chairman of the Charity, Leesa Sharpe commented that the evening was once again a truly magical night rewarding those that deserve it. Sheridan Smith and many others had tears in our eyes as the finalist stories were read out. Sheridan said “it's a pleasure to support Pride of the Isle and I will continue to support the most beautiful and inspirational night”. Leesa went on to thank everyone involved in the Pride of the Isle, including sponsors, raffle donation, Westwoodside Playing Fields Management Committee, the Parish Council, Westwoodside Residents and many, many more, who will know who they are and should be rightly proud.

THE W.W.2 DIARY OF CLIFFORD SPENCER 1764164 Gunner. SPENCER Clifford 27 L.A.A. (Light Ack Ack) Regt, R.A. (Royal Artillery) (107 Bty. (Battery)) Adapted & edited for publication by Anthony E. Catherall NORTH AFRICA & PORT SAID

We left Port Taufiq, and went to Kassasin where we stayed one month. In that month we did not do much only guard duty. I was in the cookhouse for a little while. I went to Port Said one day and came back the next with a Bofar tractor, I had two more teeth out and some false ones made, I received them the last day I was there, on the day before we went up the blue. (Moving up to front lines – going into battle) Brig. Gen. Pollack came and gave us a talk on what we should most likely come across etc. He talked of coming to Italy in the future, but I don’t think he meant the way we came. We left Kassasin Oct 29th. To go into the blue. Passed through Cairo, kept to the road until we were about two miles from Sidi Barrani, there we started up the desert, went to forward base. THE DESERT That first journey on the desert, I’ll never forget. Two or three days it took after getting lost a few times, we got without water and very little food, only hard biscuits. I could not eat them with my new false teeth it was hot with sand blowing in to the back of the lorry, bumping over rocks. I never thought that the human body could stand so much. That first day was the first I missed having a wash in my life….I have had lot’s since. Well, although we were pretty near the front we never had any action, just a few. Jerry still had Halfaya Pass (in Egypt near border with Libya) and Boldum, we came round them. Heat flies and sweaty feet, half the Battery had dysentery. After a week or two there, we went to a forward fighter Drome. There we met chaps off the ELUSTRIOS (HMS Illustrious – Aircraft Carrier), which was getting repaired at Alex (Alexandria). Next we went to landing Drome 76. (Aerodrome) Next place was El Adam (El Adem Libya), we moved in just after Jerry had been driven out, what a mess that place was, Planes by the dozen destroyed on the ground. Both Jerries and Ities. It must have been some severe battle, burnt out tanks, and Lorries in hundreds, bags of Jerry food and Red-cross stuff. I got a good supply of bandages etc, only to lose them again when captured. There were a lot of Aussies there, plenty of sand storms and rain; it was a real fine and dirty sand. Next place was Beramude near Tobruk.

The two lovely girls are Millie and Mandy, 10 year old tabby sisters who have been handed in to the Rescue by their owner following a house move. They are really friendly girls, quite calm and quiet, and would be fine with children. We would like to re-home them together if possible. They are both neutered and fully vaccinated. If you are interested in meeting these lovely girls, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION – St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools – School News The pupils in Years 3 & 4 at St Martins and Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 at West Butterwick have been enjoying the grislier aspects of the ‘The Ancient Egyptians’, as part of their topic on ‘Temples, Tombs and Treasures’. The children have learned all about the process of mummification and are currently testing the powers of salt by mummifying apples! We have a special visitor from North Lincolnshire Museum coming in shortly in support of this topic. This visitor will bring in a range of replica artefacts. We are therefore looking forward to learning a lot through ‘The Things Ancient Egyptians Left Behind – Egyptian Life and Times’. West Butterwick Juniors are already well-practiced in their historical enquiry skills – they have recently excavated some hidden treasures from the sand, searched the 'tomb' for artefacts and pieced-together the fragments of ancient wall paintings. There is a prominent focus on Healthy Living across both schools just now….thinking about the food we eat and the lifestyles we lead. At St Martin’s, school meals are cooked on site. The delicious school lunches promote a balanced diet while giving the children a choice of trying different vegetables and salad. Regular meetings of children (The ‘Taste Testers’) with the school catering team allow them to share their opinions and ideas in order to shape future menus. To support the concept of ‘healthy snacks’, St Martin’s School Council has designed and planned a Fruit Tuck Shop. This ran in February and snacks were based on the feedback from pupil questionnaires, designed and distributed by the School Council. The tuck shop was popular and we hope to feature it every half term, in order to revisit the ‘stay healthy’ message. Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. The Trentside Federation encourages the children to be active through a range of activities both during the school day and at ‘after school clubs’ too, such as; Tae Kwon Do, Street Dance, Skipping, Netball and Football Club. Pupils at West Butterwick in Nursery and Reception also take part in ‘Mini-Kicks’ – ball skills and multi skills. There have been a few ‘interesting’ newly-introduced sports at West Butterwick in particular : Boccia (a precision ball sport, related to bowls) and New Age Kurling (a form of the original curling game, but adapted so that it can be played indoors on any smooth, flat surface, such as a sports hall, rather than on ice).

Key Stage 1 now has its own sports club - ‘Phizzy Fun Club’, which introduces Infants to a variety of sports, games and develops a range of skills. The activities are planned and led by both school staff and ‘Pupil Sports Ambassadors’. The Leaders ensure the children understand the importance of warming up and cooling down at the beginning and end of the session. Years 1 & 2 Infant pupils have been introduced to a range of activities via ‘Phizzy Fun Club : tennis, netball, hurdles, long jump and obstacle races. Currently, all the children are busy practising for the annual Wake up and Shake Up Festival at South Axholme at the end of February. They have created a dance routine to a popular music track which they will perform at the festival. This event gives the children the opportunity to share their skills with children from other schools on the Isle of Axholme. Recent competitive events involving both schools include : swimming galas, orienteering, golf, skipathon and triathlon. Good luck to all teams involved! What’s been happening at Westwoodside? A lovely service was held at Westwoodside to mark Candlemas day (2nd February). The children brought candles to school which were lit as part of the service. They listened to the story of Mary and Joseph taking Jesus to the temple where Simeon blessed him and said he would shine like a light in the world. Rev. Green helped the children to think about how they can use their values such as kindness, respect and truthfulness to shine as lights in their own homes, school and community.

Reading continues to be really popular at our school. Building on our Library developments, Year 1 have visited the Nik Sharratt exhibition: ‘Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants’ at the 20:21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe. A great time was had finding out about Nik’s work including looking at some of his original illustrations. Of course sharing the books was a great hit too. The School Choir has attended the Young Voices event at Sheffield Arena. They sang with 3,000 other children to an audience of 6.000. It was a fantastic experience very much enjoyed by all who attended to either sing or watch. Then, to celebrate Education Sunday, a small group of choir members sung in St Nicholas’ Church to mark the occasion and reaffirm our links with the church community. They received lots of praise for their beautiful rendition of ‘I believe’. If you are interested in finding out more about our school and the exciting experiences we offer please call: 01427 752355 to arrange an appointment to visit us. We offer places for 3 year olds in our nursery and have vacancies from Easter. Please also look on our website to find out more http://www.westwoodside.n-lincs.sch.uk
