Community News St Nicholas Church, Haxey “RINGING REMEMBERS” On 11 November 2018, 100 years since Armistice, bells will ring out in unison from churches and cathedrals in villages, towns and cities across the country. The beacon on Tower Hill will be lit at 7.00pm followed by the ringing of Haxey church bells at 7.05pm. To mark the final year of the First World War centenary commemorations, 1,400 new bell ringers will be recruited in honour of the 1,400 that lost their lives during the First World War. Church bells across the UK remained restricted throughout the course of the war and only rang freely once Armistice was declared on 11 November 1918. The campaign to recruit bell ringers, Ringing Remembers, will keep this traditional British art alive in memory of the 1,400 who lost their lives – linking together past, present and future. For Armistice 2018: Certificates and badges will be available for all “Ringing Remembers” learners. If you, or you know of anyone who is interested in learning to ring the St Nicholas church bells at Haxey for this event please get in touch with Haxey Tower Captain Angie Mackenzie 01427 753563.

Epworth and District Flower Club members met for their December meeting at their usual venue in Haxey and prepared for a Christmas workshop. As usual, with this demonstrator, all the necessary materials were provided and members were required only to find a seat ready to watch and then act! Anne Everatt, the current Chairman opened the meeting by thanking everyone for whatever contribution they had made to the very successful Open Meeting held in November. On that evening Jonathan Moseley had entertained many, many mostly local ladies with his skilful “Fabulously Festive” demonstration. The financial result was even better than previously anticipated and a cheque for £2000 pounds will be presented to the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. A member of the Flower Club gave a vote of thanks to Anne and the committee for the hard work they had put in to ensure that the evening went smoothly. Then the demonstrator began. She had a small cylinder with a piece of oasis already fixed and showed the members how to position a very tall candle in the centre. Next she hid the oasis with small seasonal foliage before adding three cream roses. Some gold “foliage” was added and some pretty, wired pearls and more artificial seasonal materials completed the arrangement. Then, just as the real professionals do, the demonstrator produced a second, smaller arrangement which was positioned alongside with the suggestion that the two could stand side by side on a charger or something similar. Over to the members! With a very happy buzz, members worked to create their own arrangements, quite suitable for a Christmas table decoration. Containers and synthetic elements were available in gold or silver and the roses were available in cream or pale yellow so the final results varied widely but all were

extremely attractive. Some members were happy to add more foliage and others to add more festive “bling” using wired cones and glittery gold or silver leaves. The demonstrator was thanked and members cleared the debris and moved their creations to make space on the tables for an array of Christmas nibbles. Members had all taken a plate of festive food so, with an accompaniment of suitable punch, all enjoyed sampling a variety of savouries and desserts. This provided an opportunity for socialising and a very pleasant evening eventually drew to a close. By the time this reaches publication the A.G.M. will have happened and the cheque will have been presented to a representative of the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance meaning that the next meeting of the Flower Club will be held on Monday 12th March at 7.30p.m. It will be a workshop to which members need to bring nothing more than £10, (and their annual subscription!) If you feel like joining us do come along at 7.30pm to the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey. We shall be pleased to welcome you and you can try us out before you join!

This cute little boy is Bruno, a 9 year old Jack Russell Terrier cross. Bruno is a really sweet, affectionate little dog who loves his walks and likes to play. He is a bit scared of larger dogs, but could possibly live with a dog his size or smaller. He is not good with cats and would be great in an older home with no small children. Bruno is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you would like to come and meet this smashing boy, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705

Diabetes Awareness Meeting – 16th March Following a very successful Dementia Friends meeting in January, thanks to the excellent response from an article in The Arrow, South Axholme Practice Patient Participation Group has arranged a meeting on Diabetes. The session is for people who have Diabetes or who may have relatives/friends with the condition and just want to know more and understand it. The meeting is on Friday March 16th at 6.30 pm in the Thurlow Pavilion, Station Road, Epworth and is free to attend. South Axholme Practice works hard with patients to prevent Diabetes through clinical support and advice. Many people in the South Axholme area have the condition and the PPG are keen to help the practice support these patients. The meeting is intended to help people with diabetes find out more about how to manage their condition. Diabetes can have a serious impact on a person’s life, but the right care can help people avoid serious complications. Often, when someone is diagnosed with diabetes one of the most difficult things to come to terms with is that it can be for life. Everyone reacts differently but it’s essential they work with their healthcare team to manage their diabetes safely and effectively. There will be a talk by a representative of Diabetes UK and you will also be able to meet with some of the team from South Axholme Practice who manage the care of those with Diabetes. Even if you do not have the condition, you are most welcome to come along and find out more about it. For further information or to advise you are attending please email saxppg@gmail.com

GARDEN WASTE COLLECTION SERVICE Now’s the time to sign up for the garden waste collection service in 2018, which begins in March. For just £30 a year, the District Council offers a fortnightly collection that runs until the end of November. The brown bin can be used to recycle grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, leaves, small branches and twigs, dead plants, weeds, and cut flowers. During 2017, almost 6500 Bassetlaw residents subscribed to the service, which generated 2177 tonnes of garden waste and helped to prevent a large proportion of waste being sent for incineration as part of the domestic waste collection. To sign up (or renew), call 01909 534 501 or do it online at www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/ garden waste
