North Lincolnshire Trade Watch
What is Trade Watch Trade Watch is a voluntary scheme where residents will not agree to any work offered to them on the doorstep and they will report any suspicious company to Humberside Police. The scheme will protect members of our communities and act as a deterrent to potential rogue traders and criminals in the same way Neighbourhood Watch does. Residents who sign up will receive scheme window sticker, information packs and street signs are available for villages who sign up. Living in a Trade Watch area will reduce the risk of being approached or becoming a victim of a doorstep crime and send a clear, proactive message to residents and criminals that such crimes will not be tolerated within North Lincolnshire. Sikh Assembly We had a visit from a lady and she came here to tell us about her Sikh religion. She came in traditional dress and told us about the five k’s for example a Kara a metal bracelet. At the end we had some lovely pictures taken with her and the next week we stuck them in our R.E books. Candlemas Assembly Mr Bamford came in to tell us about Candlemas, we also played a game where you had to blow out the candle from a certain distance. At the end of the assembly everyone had brought in a candle and we lit them so we could make a cross. Rights’ Respecting Conference Year 5 went to a rights respecting conference to learn about how all children should have their rights’ respected. We had a big sheet of rights for children . The children knew their rights from their dates of birth. We also drew pictures of people being mean to other people to show not to be mean and to give rights to every child. Goldilocks And The Three Bears The KS1 children enjoyed the performance of Goldilocks And The Three Bears, and Little Red Riding Hood by the Rhubarb Theatre Comapny. We highly recommend them. Big Talk We had two ladies come in to tell us about the annual Big Talk. They told us about how our bodies change as we get older and how our hormones change.

Planning in full swing for Rescue Day 2019 Red hot sunshine and an England football win last summer helped to make the 10th Anniversary of Rescue Day a huge success. Now the planning is well underway for this year’s popular annual emergency services event. Rescue Day 2019 will be held on Saturday 13th July at 7 Lakes Country Park in Crowle, near Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire and members of the organising team are working hard behind the scenes preparing for what promises to be yet another fantastic day for all the family to enjoy. Favourites including the Red Devils Parachute Display team along with Fire, Police, Ambulance and water rescue teams are already booked and will be performing a range of exciting displays and demonstrations. Rescue Day showcases the life saving work that our emergency 999 teams and support services do and allows for the general public to engage with staff and volunteers who serve and protect us around the clock. It is the biggest of its kind in the country and attracts crowds in the thousands. The day is hosted annually in the idyllic water and woodland setting of 7 Lakes Country Park and is a huge hit with visitors flocking from across the region and further afield. The day is organised by a team which includes officers from East Midlands Ambulance Service, Humberside Fire & Rescue Service and HFR Solutions, Humberside Police and staff and volunteers from across the North Lincolnshire area and beyond, all of whom give their time to run the event each year. Chris Long, event Chairman said: “Rescue Day 2018 was another big success and we’d like to thank the organising team, all the organisations that took part, those that sponsor and support the day, our hosts 7 Lakes Country Park, and all the members of the public who come along and make Rescue Day such a memorable annual event. We hope we continue to encourage people to support our services and also to inspire a new generation of staff who wish to work for our emergency and support teams.” The purpose of Rescue Day is to bring together as many emergency, rescue and support services as possible in one place to demonstrate what they do and how they do it. Raising public awareness of water, road, rail and fire safety, plus health information and first aid skills are all combined with an interesting and fun time at this unique event. The day raises money for charitable causes and has funded life saving defibrillators for many communities in North Lincolnshire over recent years. Visitors always have the opportunity to engage with a range of Police, Fire and Ambulance staff, plus Air Ambulance, Search and Rescue and Coastguard teams, Water Rescue units, Highways England, rail companies including Network and Volker Rail, plus“The road recovery agencies such as Gallows Wood, and see a range of specialist 20 RailPlease mention Arrow” when responding to advertisements vehicles and equipment close up and in action.
7 Lakes will become a hive of activity on 13th July with a large range of emergency related vehicles on display, with many of the favourite attractions including live action demonstrations that include extremely life like incidents such as road, train, water and aviation rescues. Emergency teams from services across North Lincolnshire and beyond, including colleagues from West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service Urban Search & Rescue Team, Lincolnshire Police, York Rescue Boat, St John Ambulance and more, join together to show multi-agency working. They’ll also be emergency vehicles from days gone by on show, plus a range of stalls, games, food and drink and fairground rides. Four legged friends in the form of Police, Fire and water rescue dogs are big favourites each year at Rescue Day too, as they show off the work they do to help in emergency situations. Animal charities also play a big part in the day and demonstrate various animal rescue scenarios. Chris said: “Rescue Day 2019 will yet again boast lots to see and do and really is a day that all the family can enjoy, adults and children alike. We hope those that have been to Rescue Day before will come along again and those that haven’t yet been will come and experience this exciting event.” The organising team are inviting stall holders including commercial, charity and voluntary organisations, plus other exhibitors to apply online if they wish to attend this year’s event by visiting the website at www.rescueday999.com/exhibitors More details about Rescue Day, including photos and videos from previous years can be found at www.rescueday999.com or on social media Twitter: @Rescue_Day and www.facebook.com/rescudedayuk.

Community News Epworth & District WI Report Twenty-five ladies met for the February meeting which was the AGM preceded by a fascinating talk given by Peter Frost from the Epworth Mechanics Institute. Peter set the scene by explaining the origins of the Mechanics Institute, the philosophy behind the society and how it gradually evolved. Through some dedicated research Peter was able to link the creation of the Epworth WI, back in 1917, with articles from the Epworth Bells archive. This was just 2 years after the WI started in the UK in 1915, and followed a visit by a Canadian lady, Miss Guest, to Epworth. The meetings were reported in the Bells and the first meetings included talks about poultry, meat-free meals, the use of the hay box in cooking, spring cleaning and beekeeping. A number of the ladies attending the meeting hadn’t visited the Mechanics Institute and so it was extremely useful to learn that it holds not only reference books, but also thousands of fiction books. One of Peter’s passions is also tracking down books and helping people with local history enquires. Peter’s anecdotes were wonderfully interesting and informative and he received a very enthusiastic vote of thanks. The March meeting involves reflexology. Visitors are welcome to attend and a small charge of £3 is requested. Further details are available from the Secretary, Ann, on 07747103805
Epworth & District Flower Club The February meeting of the Epworth and District Flower Club was the A.G.M. held in the Stephen Jones Community Hall, Haxey. As last year the Club was able to celebrate the success of the Open meeting, held annually in November. In 2018 the members hosted Andrew Grisewood, a National Demonstrator who titled the evening “Unwrap the Season”, a prelude to the Christmas festivities. The proceeds from that enjoyable evening and the proceeds from a coffee morning held by a club member enabled the Flower Club to make a donation of £1500 to The Alzheimers Society. As the society was unable to send a representative, a large cheque for publicity purposes will
be displayed and photographed with two key members at the next meeting. A legally sized cheque will be sent to the society. The current chairman, Anne Everatt, was able to give a very pleasing report on the year’s activities and she thanked sincerely all who had supported the Club in any way at all. Anne made reference to all members and highlighted that everyone plays a part in the smooth running of the club helping to make it very successful. The usual reports were also received. The programme secretary informed the members of the coming year’s programme and she also thanked members for their support. Some discussion ensued on suggestions for future activities, particularly for outings as in the past there have been some summer visits to gardens and places of interest. It was recorded that we had lost a long standing member and friend of many, Margaret Tune, and it was agreed to make a donation to Diabetes UK in her memory. It was later agreed that the Flower Club should adopt Diabetes UK as the charity to which we will make donations in the coming year. The officers were appointed and there followed some positive an amicable discussion about ongoing finance before we enjoyed a quiz, raffle and refreshments. The coming year’s programme includes an Easter workshop, members’ workshops and demonstrations by area demonstrators. The next meeting will be held as usual on the second Monday of the month, March 11th in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey. On that occasion we shall welcome Joan Woodhead, an area demonstrator, who will create arrangements on the theme of “Picture This”. Although our usual start time is 7.30pm it was agreed to precede this meeting with the presentation of the publicity cheque so members are asked to arrive for 7.15pm. We finish at approximately 9.30pm after most meetings by which time we have anticipated winning a raffle prize and enjoyed refreshments. We are always ready to welcome new members. Would we suit you? Come and see.
