Welcome to the March issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow.

As anyone seen the annual play by Haxey Amateur Dramatic Society? Every year this great group of people put on an outstanding comedy performance of farce and have their audience laughing out loud. This year Trevor and his friend Bob lurch from dilemma to disaster and dead bodies start piling up. With an intellectually challenged gardener's daughter, several ‘interesting’ costume changes and Bob’s Mediterranean wife Maria's fiery temperament added into the mix, the chaos continues. This fast-paced farcical comedy promises silly twists and turns… with innuendo a-plenty. Another brilliant fast-paced comedy by the Amateur Dramatic Society, Make sure you book your tickets, full details are on page 10. Keep the good news coming in so you can be part of your local magazine! Enjoy the read and please note the deadline for the March issue is Monday 9th March for distribution by Sunday 29th March.. If you are interested in advertising or simply emailing me some community news, please be in touch before the date.

POLICE REPORT-PROBLEM SOLVING ADVICE FOR VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC BURGLARLY General Advice 1. Keep all the doors and windows locked. 2. Make your property appear occupied, even when you are out. You could use timers to turn on lights and have blinds set to prevent seeing inside, which may confirm a house is unoccupied. 3. If an offender approaches your house, make sure nothing blocks the view of them, such as garden hedges or trees and make sure the area is well lit so they are easily noticed. 4. Keep valuables in the home out of general view from the opportunist burglar. They may look through windows when deciding if the home contains property they consider worth stealing . Use blinds, nets or other window coverings to prevent this. 5. Fit a burglar alarm with visible, deterrent bell boxes front and rear and keep the system maintained. Key Activities A. Mark your valuables B. Consider joining or forming a neighbourhood or business network/group. Offenders are less likely to cause crime in an area where people care. Contact details of your area's Network or Group manager are - Tracey.Coyne@northlincs.gov.uk C. www.footcarebyjasmine.com PUPILS CONSIDER HOW TO SAVE THE WORLD Thanks to the generosity of North Notts Lions, three pupils representing Misterton Primary School entered the Lions ‘How to Save the World - 7 Billion Ideas Competition’ finals day held in Nottingham. Each team had to come up with an idea that might help save our planet. At Misterton School, pupils have been studying the damage that plastic causes in our oceans. They, therefore, came up with the idea of developing a machine called an Ocean Plastic Picker. This machine, when placed in the ocean, would act like a magnet and attract floating plastic waste - so making the oceans cleaner. The pupils had to make a prototype of the model as well as produce handouts and power point explanations. There were around 30 other schools taking part - though Misterton Primary didn’t win, the pupils described it as a wonderful experience. Andrew Green, Deputy Head, accompanied the pupils: “They gave a very impressive performance and made a terrific effort considering they are only in Year 5.” The school thanks North Notts Lions for enabling the school to take part in the competition. Pictured is the school team along with some of the judges at the Ramgaria Sabha Temple in Nottingham.

Epworth Music Day 2020 This year’s Epworth Music Day falls on Saturday 20 June and we are starting to put the plan together to make it as much as success as it was last year. Once again we will be putting together a daytime programme across 10 outdoor stages – with indoor alternatives if it is wet – and 3 indoor venues. We’ll be organising an evening concert in St Andrew’s Church, as well as an evening ceilidh in the Imperial Hall. The Queen’s Head, The Old School Inn, and Jinksey’s Bar in the Red Lion will also be organising their own evening concerts. Performers Last June we attracted over 50 different groups of performers across a wide range of musical genres, and we hope to be able to provide a platform for a similar array of musical talent in 2020. We already have had expressions of interest from over 40 groups who want to play. If you would like to perform at Epworth Music Day 2020, we would like to hear from you as soon as possible. Road closures Next year we will be shutting some of the roads in the centre of Epworth to help make the area safer to stroll about in. The closures will be similar to the ones for the Christmas Lights. Stewards We would welcome anyone who would like to help to steward the event on the day, including some at the barriers at the road closures. Next step? So, put the date in your diary and spread the word! If you can help or want to join in please email peter.barnard@me.com or call Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.

SENIOR CITIZENS ENJOY LUNCH AND ENTERTAINMENT Dozens of Misterton’s seniors gathered in the Methodist Hall for an annual lunch and entertainment – provided by younger members of the community and funded by Bassetlaw District and Notts County Councils, and North Notts Lions. Chair of the Parish Council, Cllr Peter Marsden, thanked the organisers for the annual lunch, held this month (Saturday 18 January), for another super community occasion. Catering was by Di's Diner, North Notts Lions laid on transport, and Misterton resident, Pat Hodges, (pictured) entertained guests with songs from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. Thanks to the team of organisers for putting on another much-appreciated event.

Doncaster Rambler’s Press Release – A Winter Wander around Welton. This walk started from the pretty village of Welton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, with the attractive church of St Helen's dominating the village and with the old mill stream running through the centre. Phil briefed 38 of us and we set of, in blustery conditions, up Elloughton Hill, from the top of which we could see the sweep of the Humber below us. We skirted the village of Brantingham and turned in a north-easterly direction on the Yorkshire Wolds Way. Our coffee stop presented us with extensive views before we continued on the Wolds Way until we turned south, passing Wauldby Manor Farm, and making our way back to Welton for the first part of this figure-of-eight walk. The friendly Green Dragon pub, allegedly the site of the capture of Dick Turpin in 1739, provided us with a chance to chat before the afternoon walk took us up the beautiful Welton Dale, joining part of the High Hunsley Circuit before making our way back to Welton for the final time. This was well led by Phil, with Norman's quiet back-marking ensuring that nobody was left behind. By David Gadd P.O.I Welton - Welton was recorded in the Doomsday survey of the 11th century, then a small village with 53 persons recorded and no church, the name derives from the old English wella (spring) and tūn meaning "farm by the spring(s)"; the area is the site of several springs, including St Annes Well in the grounds of the former Welton House. In 1519 the first recorded instance of an accidental fatal shooting in England was recorded at Welton. The highwayman Dick Turpin was charged with horse theft from Thomas Creasy at Welton in 1739 and later tried and hanged in York, and local legend he was arrested at the Green Dragon in Welton.
