Welcome to the March issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow. The first day of Spring and the days are getting lighter! I don’t know about you but it makes me feel so much better, the sight of bright spring flowers and hopefully warmer weather ahead after a cold and frosty February. Mothers Day falls on Sunday 27th March! If you haven't visited Gray and Ginger on the High Street, Epworth make sure you do. They have some wonderful and different gifts and wouldn't it be great to support a local business! As we come to hopefully the end of the pandemic we should see more groups/events opening up again in the Isle. If you know of any please let them know so we can promote them! Its good to see live music going ahead in March, you can take your pick from Mambo Jambo, Doncaster Wheatsheaf or the Isle Choral singers. Have a browse through the magazine to spot their adverts. Keep your articles coming in by emailing me carolyn@arrowpublications.co.uk The deadline for the April issue is Friday 11th March for delivery by the end of March.

WORLD WAR 2 - HAXEY PARISH MILITARY AIR CRASHES 1. The Parish Council has previously reported on its project to provide a Memorial to mark the fatal crashes of 3 World War 2 Halifax Bombers in the Parish whilst on training missions. Whilst the pandemic has resulted in delays to the Project, work has continued and this article provides an update on progress and plans for the future. 2. Two major incidents occurred in the Parish in 1944. In total, 21 aircrew fatalities were caused by both crashes; however, there were no casualties caused on the ground. a. 7 February 1944 – Halifax Mk 2 V9983 of 1662 Heavy Conversion Unit (HCU) – Lost control during evasive action to avoid a mid-air collision. Halifax V9983 from 1662 HCU was based at RAF Blyton (Gainsborough) and flown by a UK crew with a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) pilot. The aircraft lost control during evasive action to avoid a mid-air collision with another aircraft and crashed near the East Lound/Graizelound Rd Haxey. There were no survivors.

b. 7 March 1944 - Halifax Mk 5 EB184 of 1602 Heavy Conversion Unit (HCU) – based at RAF Sandtoft - Mid-Air Collision with HR 657 whilst on Night Flying/ Bombing Practice. Halifax EB184 from 1602 HCU was based at RAF Sandtoft and flown by a UK crew. The aircraft was involved in a bombing exercise over Misson Bombing Range and it is evident that it collided with HR 667 and crashed between Graizelound and Haxey. There were no survivors. c. 7 March 1944 - Halifax Mk 2 HR657of 1667 HCU based at RAF Blyton Mid-Air Collision with EB184 whilst on Night Flying/Bombing Practice. Halifax HR 657from 1667 HCU based at RAF Blyton and flown by a Polish Crew attached from 300 (Polish) Sqn. The aircraft was involved in a bombing exercise over Misson Bombing Range. During the flight, the aircraft collided with EB 184 over the Bombing Range and crashed near Graizelound. There were no survivors.
Handley Page Halifax B.III Bomber 3. North Lindsey College Students have provided a design for the Memorial and it has now been fabricated out of special steel and will be completed by the end of March. After consultation with the Acting Haxey Townsman, the site for the Memorial has been confirmed as the Haxey Pinfold opposite the War Memorial at Burrells Corner. 4. Over the coming weeks, a concrete plinth will be constructed in the Pinfold ready for the arrival and securing of the completed Memorial and the Parish Council is investigating the provision of electricity to both the Pinfold and the War Memorial. It is hoped to arrange a Dedication of the Memorial in the Summer, which will be attended by surviving relatives of the crew members and Service and civilian representatives from the various nations involved.

Epworth Bowls Club Battle Green Epworth Spring is nearly upon us and Epworth Bowls Club is preparing for the new bowling season. We are a small, friendly and active club, founded in the 1930's and our season starts from 1st May to 30th August. Annual membership is £30 and social membership is £20. Our activities vary from league matches, internal competitions, visiting other clubs for friendly days out, have our own Gala Day and enjoy some very good Fun Days with our members. We also meet up socially every month during the winter. Bowling is not just for the elderly and we would like to welcome and encourage new members to join us, male and female, all age groups (children from age 12 years). Our roll-ups, which are run twice a week, have been well supported and we hope to do the same again this year in compliance with any COVID 19 rules and regulations which have been set out by Bowls England. This is a good opportunity to learn a new sport, make new friends, to exercise according to your own ability and all at a very reasonable cost. Social membership is also available if you prefer. Why not come and have a go, you will be made very welcome with bowls and instructions initially provided. Contact Liz or Sue who will be pleased to give you any further information you require. News From Haxey Church of England Primary School I set the football team up at the start of the year for our Year 5 and 6 pupils. So far we have 18 players that come to training, a mix of boys and girls. I recently took 8 of them to a 6-a-side tournament hosted at Appleby Froddingham. They managed to win enough group stage games to advance to the semi finals where we unfortunately lost. They all had a great day and all thoroughly enjoyed it. They are very excited for our next game and hopefully we will have plenty to play after Easter. I would like to say a massive thankyou to our school PTFA who raised the money and bought our fabulous football kit which was inspired by designs from the pupils in the team. Mr Smythe
SENIOR CITIZENS GET HOME-DELIVERED LUNCH This year's lunch and entertainment for Misterton’s senior citizens, due to be held on Saturday 29 January, was cancelled as so few people had responded to say they'd like to attend. With few guests, it wouldn’t be conducive to a good atmosphere and disheartening for the entertainers playing to a tiny audience. The lack of response may have been down to continuing uncertainty about Covid-19. So those who did reply got a home delivery and 30 meals were delivered to those who had hoped to attend. Thanks to those who organised the lunch (pictured from left) Gill, Nikki, Liz, and Sharon. Thanks also to County and District Councillors, Tracey Taylor and Hazel Brand, who, with North Notts Lions, funded the lunch. And to Misterton butcher, Wayne Howe, who made the meat pies and some of the cakes. A delicious meal was had by all!

Revolutionizing Lawn Care
GreenThumb Lawn Treatment Service has over 35 years’ experience in caring for the nation’s lawns. With warmer, longer days on the horizon, we anticipate a burst of beautiful flowers alongside our lovely green lawns. To ensure your lawn takes pride of place as the centerpiece of your garden, it’s important to keep it nourished with our NutraGreen fertilisers and other beneficial treatments. At this time of year, your lawn may be struggling to rid itself of persistent moss. Moss thrives in damp and shaded areas; it’s commonly caused by thatch and soil compaction in addition to mowing your lawn too short. With this in mind, it’s important to remember that now is a good time of year for your lawn to benefit from Aeration and Scarification. This machine work is the most effective way to remove the main causes of moss, thatch, and compaction, leaving you with a much healthier lawn. Of course, your lawn must also benefit from regular mowing and watering to reach its full potential. Get to know, how to mow! When expecting dry weather, increase the height of your cut from 30mm to 45mm. This helps to keep the grass cool and stops it from drying out too quickly. The more often you mow your lawn, the better it will look. At least once per week is a good general rule. Do not let your lawn grow too long before mowing it, and never scalp it! Check your mowers blade is sharp and remove any debris. How to water during dry weather Watering in the evening is best for your lawn. Water for only 20 minutes at a time to avoid ‘pooling’ on your lawn. For more efficient watering, use a sprinkler and a timer. Watering costs far less than reseeding or replacing a lawn which has died of thirst. Our Oasis Water Conserver can also help to reduce the need to water by up to 80%! Let’s create the lawn we both love. Contact your local GreenThumb branch today on 01427 238 442 or email doncastereast@greenthumb.co.uk to start your journey to a beautiful lawn.

The Epworth and District Flower Club has continued to remain active as far as has been possible during the last 22 months. Members received flowers, a calendar and items for "do it yourself" workshops during the very difficult months. As the government's rules changed there were outdoor meetings and eventually in November, we held a delayed Diamond Birthday celebration at The Reindeer Inn, when 30 members were wonderfully entertained by Mark Entwhistle, a very capable national demonstrator from Cheshire. In December this was followed by a Christmas workshop meeting which was another enjoyable evening, adapted to the conditions ruling at the time and held in St Andrew's Church. The Club's year concluded with a very enjoyable meal in January at The Epworth Tap. The AGM is held in February and as membership numbers have risen considerably it has been necessary to find a new venue. St Andrew's Church has welcomed us and it is anticipated that the future meetings will be held there for this year. The Club will continue to meet on the second Monday of each month and we have a varied programme. On Monday 14th March four members will produce a fixed price quantity of supermarket flowers and there will be four members who will each make an arrangement from these. The title is a Supermarket Challenge. An Easter workshop is planned for 11th April and a plant sale will be held. If you wish to join you should find us welcoming and there is usually a chance of winning a lovely flower arrangement. Do join us on the second Monday of each month at St Andrew's Church, Epworth. We aim to begin at 7.30pm.

Westwoodside Academy News The beginning of Spring Term has been a busy time at Westwoodside Academy.
Greek Day- Year 6 The children from Year 6 had a fantastic day with Catherine from History to Life; exploring the history and culture of the Ancient Greeks. Through the handling (and wearing!) of resources; deciphering of the Greek alphabet; art activities and playing Greek strategy games they were able to get a taste of life in Ancient Greece. Every one had a great day and the Greek way of living really came to life. Chinese New Year Throughout our school, each class has taken part in a number of activities to celebrate Chinese New Year. Nursery and Reception children had the opportunity to taste various Chinese foods and learn how to practice Chinese lettering. In KS1 pupils made concertina Chinese dragons and took home red envelopes filled with chocolatey treats. Meanwhile, in KS2 pupils produced some spectacular tiger art using symmetry painting to bring their art to life. Chopstick challenges were also taking place whilst other pupils were busy reading fortunes from their very own fortune dragons. We were also lucky enough to watch a presentation which included some great fun facts, given by one of our pupils. Forest Schools In Nursery we had lots of fun during our Forest School session. The children spotted some dinosaur footprints and followed them through the woods on a dinosaur hunt. Whilst searching through the trees, logs and ivy, they found some dinosaurs, bones To advertise please call 01302 532676 and even........poo! They absolutely loved it.
