A small group of Players came together to delight residents and churchgoers alike with an impromptu performance of the great Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”…. A Ghost Story. The performance took place on December 14th at 7pm within the historic Church of St Pancras, Wroot. The play, produced by cast member Gill Smith, was in response to a long discussed idea, nursed by herself and Liz Keenan, who was keen to take on a ghostly role in the play. After securing both Sound Director and the perfect ‘Mr Scrooge’ in the form of Chris Morley, the brief rehearsals were underway with all kinds of unexpected occurrences, but the dedication of the small team paid off! Sound effects were recorded, props were made, costumes were provided by the cast, lanterns were lit and the church was illuminated. Cast members had at least two roles each to undertake. Members of the audience described the performance as “slick and seamless”. The costumes as “faultless and stunning”. The Victorian carols and candlelit production added to the wonderful, spooky, lighthearted ambience. The audience were thanked at the end of the performance, (for attending on such a dark dismal evening) with a Christmas tipple, mine pies and chocolates, all donated by the cast. The evening sold out as soon as advertised and raised £320 in ticket sales with a further £105 of donations on the night, a total of £425 which was forwarded to The St. Pancras Church Roof repair fund. The cast who named themselves. “The Seasonal Players” hope to perform on an annual basis, with slight twists and turns introduced to keep the audience guessing and the funds forthcoming for such a worthy cause.

High Levels WI January meeting The first meeting of the new year was held on 17th January, the third Wednesday of the month which is the usual meeting night. Members and visitors were welcomed before John Armson from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service was introduced. His talk was on Life Support and Heart Resuscitation. John gave the members a resume of his experiences in the service. Then he began, with the help of a short film, to explain that intervention by the public can often “buy time” in cases of emergency until profession assistance is available. John showed short clips of the film and then enlarged on the actions by telling us of scenarios in which he had been involved. He gave details of actual emergency situations in which anyone could find themselves and reinforced how anyone can help. The incidents covered were people experiencing heart attacks, sudden collapse, severe bleeding and choking. He then demonstrated how anyone would use a defibrillator and gave information about where to locate one. John was an excellent speaker and although many members have been participants in First Aid courses or have nursing experience it was excellent to have a reminder and hear how interventions have been updated as medical practices develop. The evening continued with refreshments and members were reminded of forthcoming outings to the theatre and a local restaurant. During the brief business part of the evening members were reminded about voting for the Resolutions put forward nationally. The March meeting (20th) will be a talk and demonstration on Canal Art given by Stuart Garfoot. Do look at our website and visit or join us if you think we might suit you. I recently spoke to someone who said she had read of our activities in “the Arrow” and thought we sounded interesting. 14 meetPlease mention “The Arrow” responding to advertisements We at 6.45pm at the Reindeer at Sandtoft.when I’m sure you would find us friendly.

Aspirations Week at Misterton Primary and Nursery School The last week of January 2024 marked Misterton Primary School’s Aspirations Week. We had visitors joining us to share their career paths. The children heard inspiring, factual information about our visitor’s careers past and present. Jason and Tara joined us from the Youth Service and shared their current careers and Jason spoke about his time in teaching and how his career developed. The children know this team so well and we always enjoy working jointly with them. Mrs Cooke gave the children an experience of her career as a physiotherapist. The children tried out the hoist and bands to strengthen their muscles. Mr Eusman shared his career in the Royal Air force maintaining the aircraft and the ejector seats that the children found incredibly interesting. He also shared his next career in the railways. Toni and Taff shared their careers with the Vulcan aircraft and Mrs Kaur shared her career with the Yorkshire Building Society. Sam the Firefighter visited Key Stage 1 and Year 3 to talk about her career. The Cyber Prepare, Protect & Prevent Officers from the Cyber Crime Unit taught our children about the Law of Cyber Crimes and careers that can take our young people in the right direction. The Year 6 children are still trying to think of a career that does not involve IT. A very kind email came back into school from this team, praising the children for their welcome and behaviour. Thank you to all of our visitors fore inspiring our children in their future careers.

1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts February 2024 Scouts and cubs have made the most of the milder few evenings to be out and about. Scouts, having finished their signaller badge were set a project challenge to make a stand to hold a pot of water over an open fire. They had to design models and practice lashings before making a full scale model using 8ft poles and testing it, outdoors. All 3 patrols were successful! We have also completed our ICT badges, finding out about the inner workings of a computer, and all the components both inside and out the main unit. We also made sure they could all use basic word processing, spreadsheets, publishing and email programmes. In March we will be welcoming a team of students from Lincoln University who will be coming to train us in a media project – watch this space! The cubs have enjoyed a night hike looking at navigating by starlight and finding how different everything looks in the dark. They worked hard to make bridges for a challenge project, all alongside lots of games. We have all also been preparing for Founders day (sometimes known as Thinking Day) March and Church service where we get to showcase what our scouting year looks like and some of the activities we do. Scouts and cubs have been practising their lines and choosing their favourite photos in preparation. All are welcome. We parade from the youth hub, near the Memorial Hall in Haxey at 10:15am and then enjoy a service in church. This year we will be celebrating on Sunday February 18th as the nearest Sunday to Baden Powell’s birthday. Beavers section will soon restart - please get in touch if your child (aged 5-8 years) would like to join us this Term. Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) meeting on Monday evenings 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts & Senior Scouts), and Beavers (tbc) probably on a Tuesday evening at 6pm (from September). Remember, we are still looking to recruit more Beavers leaders/ helpers for this section. Please get in touch if this is something you would like to do.
All enquiries about Scouts or Beavers should go to Gregor on: gagibb79@aol.com, 22 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements and Cub enquiries should go to Ma hieu at: ma hieu_maloigne@mentor.com.
Epworth and District Flower Club On Thursday, 11th January the majority of the membership of the Flower Club enjoyed a meal at the Old School Inn in Epworth. The venue was different from previous years as the membership of the club has increased so much. Anne Everatt, the Chairman, wished everyone a Happy new Year as the evening began. Then much chatter and laughter ensued as the ladies enjoyed their meals. At the end of a pleasant evening thanks were expressed and members were reminded of the next meeting which would be the AGM. As everyone departed into a cool winter’s night so many people said how they enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and the variety of activities undertaken by the group. Maybe you would like to join us? We meet on the second Monday of each month at 7.30 in St Andrew’s Church, Epworth. Some of our forthcoming events are: March 11th: a flower demonstration entitled “A night at the movies” given by Sue Hodgson April 8th and May 13th : visiting demonstrators. Other planned activities are workshops and inhouse demonstrations. We sometimes have plant sales and always have refreshments and delicious nibbles. Give us a try
