Did you know the first day of the month of May is known as May Day. It is the beginning of warmer weather, whilst flowers and blossom fill our gardens. Morris dancing, crowning of the May Queen and dancing round the Maypole are also a few of our many English traditions.

This time of year the garden definitely needs some work, no matter how low maintenance it may be! There are plenty of adverts in this issue of the Arrow to tempt you into buying those Summer bedding plants and also if your lawn needs some tender loving care, give Greenthumb a call, it works out much cheaper then buying the DIY treatments! This month is the first of our ‘Flowers for Someone Special’, courtesy of Toni Gravel of Epworth; please send in your nominations for that special person who deserves a bouquet. (page 21 for main advert) Have a glorious May and enjoy the read.
Best Wishes

News, News, News, News, News, News, News... An exciting day of family fun has been announced at one of North Lincolnshire’s highly popular tourist attractions – the Old Rectory in Epworth – with trips into the past. The events will be taking place later in the year as part of the national Museums at Night Weekend – as the Old Rectory was recently granted official status as a museum. ―What we have planned will provide an interesting day out for all the family, as we‘ll be providing a series of events to appeal to all age groups,‖ said Geordan Hammond, Audience Development Officer as the museum. The day itself – Saturday, May15 – will be divided into two sections. The first runs from 6pm until 8pm with a range of activities for families with children.
2000 acres to the Knights Templar. It is not known what sort of establishment the Templars‘ built. Perhaps it was just an outpost with the land bringing in revenue. A variant of a Maltese cross is the only survivor of the period and there is some ancient glass in Belton church. After the suppression of the Knights Templar the land passed through various notable families like the Vavasours and the Popplewells eventually passing into the Johnson family. They held it for many generations ensuring the estate was protected by marriages between distant relations. In the late 1800‘s it was turned into a hotel but did not prosper. In turn it became a Boarding house and then a boarding school known as‘ St Paul‘s College. Many tales are told about temple Bellwood One in particular about a horse. Michael Fothering ham was on the opinion that the tale related to a horse called ‗Tankersley‘ which was purchased and had its name changed to ‗Sir Soloman‘
They include puppet and magic shows, live music, balloon modelling, outside games – such as croquet – and 18th century school lessons. There will also be food and refreshments available. Then from 8pm until 10pm there will be candlelit tours of the Old Rectory – internationally famous a the birthplace of John and Charles Wesley, who founded the Methodist movement. Parties of people will be led from room to room in the elegant, three storey and Grade 1 listed building by ‗housemaids‘ dressed in costumes of 18th century. In each room there will be a similarly attired guides to explain about the room and its significance in the Wesley household. The candlelit tours cost £5 per person and have to be booked in advance by telephoning the Old Rectory on 01427 872268.

Current priorities that the Neighbourhood Team are concentrating on in the ward are as follows: Nethergate, Westwoodside anti-social behaviour, youths causing annoyance– reports have been received that youths are frequenting this area of the village and in some instances causing damage to properties. The times of occurrence fall in the main of an evening and at weekends. Patrols will be in the area at the relevant times in order to provide public re-assurance, crime prevention and to identify and offenders and engage with any youths seen in order to gain intelligence to prevent this type of occurrence happening.
PC Constable 1839 Tina Starbuck
Police Community Support Officer 7574 Sue Fahy
Blackmoor Road / Lowcroft Ave / Marlborough Ave – Haxey anti-social behaviour, neighbourhood issues – There have been reports in the past of youths behaving in an anti social manner in these areas, there has already been some success in tackling these problems and this will continue with regular patrols by officers in an evening to provide public re-assurance and tackle anti social behaviour. West Butterwick Village Hall – reports have been received that the village hall area of West Butterwick is experiencing nuisance including anti-social behaviour and damage some of which is graffiti. Due to the location of this hall does make it quite an attractive area for groups of youths to gather whilst not using the facilities provided by the hall and when the hall is closed. Patrols will be checking the area and would encourage people to be extra vigilant in particular whilst the dark nights are with us and to report matters to the police at the time they are noticed or if they have any information as to the identity of any offenders. Officers continue to work with the local authority and youths to support diversionary activities for youths to prevent them offending. This includes support of the playing field associations in fundraising activities. Neighbourhood officers when duty times permit will actively engage with Neighbourhood watch meetings. PC Starbuck was invited to attend Wroot Travis School on Thursday 1 st April to judge their Easter competition. The pupils and staff have worked very hard this term and it was very pleasant to be able to attend on such a nice occasion and make some difficult decisions. PC Starbuck, PCSO Fahy and PCSO Pearson attended their first ‗walkabout‘ surgery on Monday 22 April at West Woodside and by all indications this was well received with visits to local premises and also being stopped and spoken to by a local parish councillor. This style of surgery is going to continue and dates will be published on this site, the Epworth Bells newspaper, The Arrow magazine and local ward web sites. I would encourage anyone who sees us out and about to stop and chat about your particular area. WALKABOUT SRUGERY DATES;OWSTON FERRY –Friday 14th May, 3pm – 4pm – starting off at the village hall. WROOT – Friday 25th June, 3pm-4pm – starting off at Cross Keys Public House. WEST WOODSIDE – Thursday 15 July, 3pm-4pm – starting off at the Carpenters Arms Public House. You can contact Humberside Police on 0845 60 60 222 for non-emergency calls. If you feel uncomfortable in calling the police with information about crime, then please consider contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers is an independent charity working to fight crime. They can also be joined on Twitter, Facebook and Bebo or if you go onto the Crimestoppers website you can also fill an on-line form. When contacting Crimestoppers you do not have to give your name and you may be eligible for a cash reward. Working with Pc Starbuck is your Police Community Support Officer Susan FAHY, who regularly patrols the South area of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community issues with you. Please feel free to stop and speak with her or alternatively contact either of us via 0845 60 60 222. The police station at Epworth also provides a front counter service for two days a week, Mondays and Thursdays, between 9am and 3pm. The date and location for the next Neighbourhood Action Team meeting will be at Wroot Village Hall on Monday 17th May 2010.

Wroot Travis School News letter This month the KS2 children have had a course of first aid training, delivered by St John‘s Ambulance. There were three half days and the instructor made it very interesting with a mixture of instruction and practical work. The children all received a certificate and people in Wroot can now feel confident that if they have an accident in the village there will be a child on hand who will happily run to their aid. Congratulations to Ciar Gallagher and Samantha Cook who have recently passed their Grade 2 music exams and to Frances Turner who has passed Grade 1. They are part of our thriving brass ensemble. On 24th March we went to The Dome in Doncaster to see a production of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. It was a fantastic show which had people up and dancing in the aisles. The cast were brilliant, the costumes very good and the blow up sheep very interesting. The children were all singing the songs on their way back to the coach. They were still singing next day in the playground. On 31st March we had a visit from the Fire Brigade. The fire engine drove onto the playground at the back of school and the children all had a good look at it. The firemen were great and gave us a lot of information about the job they do. It got more exciting when they got a real ―shout‖ and had to leave quickly with the siren going. We broke up for the holiday on 1st April but it was a busy day. We all went to the Church coffee morning in the village hall, we had refreshments, bought raffle tickets and then played bingo. This wasn‘t easy for some of the younger children and they had a little help from staff. Freddie was delighted to win the first house. Later in the day it was review afternoon and parents were invited into school to look at their children‘s work and talk to their teachers. Members of the PSFA had been busy that morning and hundreds of lolly pop sticks appeared on the school playing field. The children lined up and ran onto the field. They had to collect a stick then come back and claim their chocolate egg. Different colours on the bottom of the stick meant a different sized egg. There was one large egg left over so there‘s still a stick out there somewhere so keep looking. Too late the egg went into the raffle. When the children had given up and were clutching a heap of chocolate eggs they rolled boiled eggs down the nursery slide to see who got the furthest. Well done to Lauren Wolstenholme who won the big prize.
That‘s all folks we can have a well earned rest now until school opens again on 20 th March, we‘ll have to start the gardening club then and get those vegetable seeds in.

CROWLE SHOW 2010 Sunday 27th June New for 2010
Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting Batons of Steel Majorettes Sheep Section Axholme Ferrets Show Crowle‘s very own agricultural show is getting bigger this year. This year‘s show is taking place on the 27th of June. The best of the Isle and beyond will be showcased on Godnow Rd in Crowle. This year it will be bigger and better than ever. The organising committee hopes that the fabulous new attractions and wider range of classes will bring even more people out to enjoy the day. Among the usual entertainment, displays and activities, new attractions this year include Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting, the ‗Batons of Steel‘ Majorettes, the Axholme Ferrets Show and ferret racing. The attractions this year hope to promote all aspects of our town both as a rural center and as a great place to live. We hope to bring livestock and local produce to the forefront of this years show. Following the success of local butcher Dave Parkin‘s cattle classes last year, these will continue to be run alongside new sheep classes. The horse section goes from strength to strength, make sure you see the glamorous ladies riding side saddle and the showjumping which promises to be as hotly contested as ever. The dog show features a whopping 156 classes, plus a companion dog show in aid of Macmillan cancer research. Other attractions include vintage cars, engines and motorbikes; trade stands and shops from all over the county and much, much more! We want as many people as possible to come down and celebrate our town this year. Get involved in the clay pigeon shooting, support your local businesses, compete in the classes or just come along to meet your friends. Crowle show is on the 27th of June 2010, it will be well signposted on Godnow Rd in Crowle. Tickets cost - £5 per Adult, £3 Concessions & Children and Family tickets cost £10 (2 adults & 3 children) For more information and for all schedules visit the website

Some people are unable to get to these groups, perhaps because they live in an outlying village with an infrequent bus service or have no transport of their own. If you are able to help every now and again we‘d like to hear from you. For further information please ring 01724 270835 and talk to either Alison Tindall or Chris Dyer. Donations needed to our Hospice Shop on the High Street in Epworth. You can now help us make and extra 28% on the sale value of donated goods. We are now able to claim Gift Aid on goods donated by UK tax payers. Ask in the shop for information or call 01427 874967. Watch out around Epworth and the villages for news of our Isle Supporter Group activities. For more information visit our website at www.lindseylodgehospice.org.uk, call our fundraising team on 01724 843731 or email: enquiries@lindseylodgehospice.org.uk. You can write and send donations to Lindsey Lodge Hospice Burringham Road, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, DN17 2AA.

Haxey Parish Council, Newsletter, May 2010 Parish Clerk - Deb Hotson Email: haxeypc@live.co.uk Telephone: 01652 618306 / 07800 569 589 Website: www.haxeyparish.org.uk Best Kept Village Competition & Parish Litter Pick day Haxey Parish Council has entered Haxey and Westwoodside in the Best Kept Village Competition again for 2010. This is an opportunity for everyone to get involved by helping with the Litter Pick day detailed below and / or by getting creative in your front gardens. The judging normally takes place mid June with a second visit in August if we fared well in the first visit. So get those green fingers planting. As in previous years, the Parish Council will be funding the various hanging baskets, troughs and containers located in the villages and these will be in situ mid May to early June. If you would like to help prepare the Parish for the Best Kept Village Competition 2010 there will be a meeting mid May for a day of litter picking. Equipment and gloves will be provided but bring your own if you wish. For all ages. Contact Cllr Stan Boor on 01427 752738. Westwoodside Village Hall As a Parish Council we have representation on a number of charitable organisations. We would like to bring to the attention one such organisation as quite a number of people appear to believe Westwoodside Village Hall is run or funded by the NLC. It is run by a dedicated little group of local people on a voluntary basis, it is funded largely by the charges that are made for the use of the Hall and is run for the good of local people and always look to offer good value. It is most regrettable that the Hall itself has been the subject of both anti social and criminal offences and this has put additional pressure on the limited funds and the good will of its neighbours. The car park is also the property of the Hall and is maintained wholly by the Hall who makes no charge for parking by people using the Hall or by parents of the school. The committee always appreciate offers of help in its maintenance has keeping it in good condition is difficult and naturally parking is at car owners own risk. Car owners are also asked to help by not parking carelessly as this puts a further strain on finances. The committee will always welcome offers of help from anyone wishing to volunteer with maintenance and you should approach the committee if you wish too. Of course any help with offers of materials are always greatly appreciated or if you can supply them at cost for projects, the committee would be happy to see whether funds are available. Grant Update For the financial year ending 31st March 2010 Haxey Parish Council has provided the following groups and organisations with £19,420 in grant funding. Haxey & District Bowls Club Haxey & Westwoodside Allotment Association Westwoodside Playing Field Association Isle of Axholme Physically Handicapped Society Haxey Pre-School St Nicholas PCC Westwoodside Methodist Chapel Low Burnham Village Centre Haxey Playing Fields Association Haxey Cricket Club British Royal Legion Humber & Wold Rural Community Council – Community Transport f you are a group or organisation within the Parish and need financial assistance please write to the Parish Council providing a copy of your financial accounts for the year with a letter detailing what the grant would be used for and this will be put forward at the Parish Council Meeting. Over 70’s Party The residents of Haxey and Westwoodside who are, or will be over 70 years of age this year, are invited to attend the Over 70‘s Party on 3rd June 2010. Invitations will be sent out to past attendees, but anyone who has had their 70‘s birthday during the year, or are new to the Parish, may not yet be on the list. The Isle of Axholme
Where You Live
Your Local History
Adapted by Anthony Catherall
THE NORMANS In 1066 William the Conqueror became King of England after defeating Harold at the Battle of Hastings. The Normans quickly set about ruling England with an iron fist, suppressing ruthlessly any Saxon rebellion. The lands of England were divided up between the Norman Barons who had helped William at Hastings. The Bishop of Constance was given the estates of the Isle of Axholme amongst others. These were passed on to his nephew, Robert de Mowbray. Later King William 11 confiscated the estates on account of Robert de Mowbray’s rebellion against him. Later they were conferred on Nigel d’ Albini. His son Roger took the Mowbray. The Mowbray’s built a castle at Owston Ferry. It was a mote and bailey castle with a man made hill on which the actual castle was built probably of wood. This was destroyed in 1173 after a rebellion by the Mowbray’s. The Mowbray family became one of the most prominent in England. In 1385 Thomas de Mowbray was made Earl Marshal of England. In the Isle, Thomas had churches built at Haxey, Epworth, Owston Ferry and Belton. He founded the Carthusian Monastery at Low Melwood. It was known at the ‘Priory in the Wood’. The monks were not allowed to eat meat or drink anything but water. The barons of England had despotic powers, but the Mowbray’s appear to have ruled fairly benevolently. In 1360 John de Mowbray granted a famous deed to his tenants that gave them free use of the wastelands adjacent to each parish. This deed caused a great deal of trouble to Vermuyden and his fellow drainage experts. It gave the tenants the right to dig the peat, collect the tree remnants and to rate their hemp in the waters of the wastes. It was signed at Epworth on May 1st 1360 and written in French. It is now amongst the public records in the Tower of London. The Doomsday Book compiled in 1086 gave the Normans an idea of the kind of country they had conquered. It gave the economic value of each of the manors and of the social standing of its inhabitants. Epworth, Haxey, Graizelound, East Lound, High and Low Burnham, West Butterwick and Crowle are all mentioned in the Doomsday Book. It gave the value of each manor as well as the number of ploughs, oxen’s teams, and amount of meadow and value of fisheries. The villages at this time would have been little better than a collection of hovels.

Visitors flocked to the Axholme Camera Club for the showing of Parry Jenkins 'Musical Mystery Tour'. Parry, of Wroot, is well known around the Isle and his digital images are not to be missed. The show he put on was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed by all present, especially as appropriate music accompanied the pictures, with Parry also playing the piano, an added treat. The Royal Photographic Society is world renowned for the superb quality of its members' work. Members of the Club enjoyed a show of excellent photographs produced by the RPS Nature Group. Their work is always inspirational, and this is evident by an increased number of Nature photographs being entered in competitions by members.
Strangers in the Night won Edward Sabin ( Ted) 20 points
When Tony and Marjorie Furmston of Normanton were invited to judge the 'Ladies versus Gents' competition they were pleased with the friendly reception. It is one of their favourite clubs, they say, and they are always pleased to revisit. The Vice Chairman David Ulyett welcomed them and explained that he was very keen on a bargain, and here we had 2 for 1, to which Marjorie replied, ' No. BOGOF' ( Buy One Get One Free ) to much laughter and applause. The judging was undertaken in a more serious vein, although interspersed with humorous anecdotes and helpful hints and tips. The members had turned out entries in force to try to win or defend the title, and it was a close run thing. However, on this occasion the Ladies pipped the Gents by less than 1 point, with 20 points going to Helen Turton, Edward Sabin and Alan Townsend ( twice). Ray Brightman from Sheffield came to show some of his work, and excellent work it was covering many years. In fact, he said the Club was privileged to be the one to see his final slide show, as slides are now a thing of the past and he has not ventured, yet, into digitally projected images. His adventurous work with prints would suggest it won't be long.

On Friday 9th April, Michelle Sidebottom founder of Arrow Publications celebrated her 40th birthday in style! Her husband Sid organised a ‗Pink Stretch Hummer‘, which travelled around Doncaster stopping off at homes of friends, who all welcomed her with special surprises. From champagne, chocolate, balloons and banners Michelle was received like royalty. I would personally like to say a big thank you to Michelle, without her I wouldn‘t be where I am today working with the Arrow magazine. On meeting Michelle I found her very kind and thoughtful; she welcomed me on board and to this day I appreciate everything she has done for me. Not only a work colleague Michelle has also proved to be a very special friend. Special thanks also goes to Peggy and her team at Trax FM, who very kindly announced Michelle‘s birthday on their radio station at such short notice. So here is to Michelle on reaching her ‗landmark‘ and I am sure all the readers of the Arrow wish her all the best!

Doncaster Advanced Motorist Dear Readers, The visibility of pedestrians at night is a complex phenomenon. A Driver can only avoid accident if he sees a pedestrian relatively far ahead. The driver must detect the pedestrian, recognize the impending collision, and then react by pressing the brakes. Suppose a driver is traveling at 60 mph (88 feet per second) and suddenly sees a pedestrian. Normal reaction time is about 1.5 seconds. During this time, the car will have moved forward 132 feet (1.5 x 88). Cars don‘t stop instantaneously, however, so the vehicle continues forward after brake depression until friction halts all motion. This would require another 150 feet and take about 2.8 seconds. As a result, the driver must see the pedestrian 280 feet and 4.3 seconds in advance. At a speed of 35 mph, the stopping distance is still 138 feet and the stopping time is 3.6 seconds. These calculations also assume good conditions. The requirements increase when the road is wet, the vehicle is heavier (a fully loaded tractor trailer can take 400 feet or more), the terrain slopes downhill or the driver‘s reaction time is slowed by age, alcohol, fatigue or distraction. (Using a mobile phone.) The driver is usually looking directly ahead. The pedestrian must be seen in peripheral vision because there is an angle between the driver‘s direction of gaze and the pedestrian‘s location. The pedestrian is hard to detect because people are much poorer at seeing objects off the direct line-ofsight. The eye has lower peripheral acuity and visual attention is usually concentrated where the viewer fixates – directly ahead. Attention becomes more focused ahead when visibility conditions are poor or traffic is heavy The driver will most likely detect the pedestrian only if there is an eye movement to the right or left. This may occur by chance or if the pedestrian is highly conspicuous for some reason, but drivers are usually looking for pedestrians only at likely locations. Drivers won‘t expect to see pedestrians in rural roads or other areas where they have learned through experience that pedestrians are unlikely to appear. For example, three quarters of the pedestrians killed in road accidents are hit outside of crossings, probably because drivers do not expect them there.

On Friday 21st May at 7.30pm The Badapple Theatre Company will present ‘Back to the Land Girls’ at West Butterwick Village Hall. This is the story of two girls from very different backgrounds who become Land Girls and soon learn all there is to know about working on the land. It is a comedy written by Badapple‘s resident writer. The story celebrates the highs and lows of the women who helped keep Britain fed during the Second World War. It is set against the glorious music of the era. It is a fictional tale but is based on the reminiscences of a number of Land Army girls.
Tickets are £5 and are available by phoning 01724 782181. West Butterwick Field Day will be held on Saturday 21 st August – attractions including Batons of Steel Majorettes and a Fly Ball display are being booked. There will be many other things including games, stalls, races for children and a licensed bar. If you haven‘t been to West Butterwick Field Day before, do come this year for a fun afternoon. Further information will be available later.
West Butterwick Village Hall is available for hire – contact Beryl Ash on the number listed in the back of the ‘Arrow’.

Trentside Confederation Newsletter. Spring has well and truly sprung at the Trentside Confederation. Both schools held wonderful Easter Services at the local churches. The singing from both schools was lively and tuneful! We also welcomed back Mrs Buckle from her maternity leave. Having recently achieved our Healthy Schools status we are now aiming to show how environmentally friendly we are by working towards our Eco Schools Award, over the next few months. Miss Foreman will be leading us towards this goal! The Foundation Stage children at St Martin‘s have been enjoying their new outdoor area, including play house and sandpit which were kindly donated by a member of staff and a parent. You know who you are…THANK YOU! The CTA (Children Teacher Association) at West Butterwick is growing from strength to strength. They held a successful and enjoyable Easter Open Day where the children were busy selling raffle tickets and generally being active around our school. Finally as we look forward to an exciting new term, we said goodbye and good luck to some of our friends and colleagues. We would like to thank Mrs Sharpe for her hard work in the office and we would like to wish Mrs Richardson luck as she starts her new job…our loss is their gain! Also we would like to thank Mrs Kneller for her hard work during her time with us and we wish her a relaxing and happy retirement.

Dining Out Locally at The Mowbray Arms ‘Since Lou and Diane Dennis have arrived at The Mowbray Arms in Epworth, they have created a nice homely welcoming feel for the visitor to their beamed restaurant area. The furnishings are pleasant with comfortable seating for 40 plus Having eaten there twice recently, their Sunday lunch is delightful, I report complete satisfaction. The visitor is provided with a choice of two main courses with desserts to follow. The service is very friendly combined with generous portions of meat and four vegetables for the main course. I and my guests savoured the most tender beef, with Yorkshire pudding of course! To follow I sampled Diane's delicious apple pie with custard. The restaurant is open both during daytimes and evenings, except Monday and Tuesday lunchtimes. In the sizeable bar area, the beer Lou serves is good and reasonable, moderately priced in a most convivial atmosphere. Outside there is a sunny seating area facing west coupled with an adjoining large car park. An ideal venue for you and your friends to dine informally at a very reasonable cost, we will be going back!
If you haven't been yet, why not give the Mowbray a try!

Westwoodside Church of England School Newsletter At the end of the Spring Term at Westwoodside Church of England School an Easter Raffle was held. Thank you to Mrs Spowage and Miss O‘Leary for organising the raffle. Also thank you to the Staff, P.T.A. members and Governors who generously donated over 60 prizes. The raffle raised £138 which will go towards P.T.A. funds which this year are helping to update our library. The School recently won some gardening equipment from the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England. The high quality equipment has been added to the resources already in School and will be used, starting in the Summer Term, when volunteer helpers will help small groups of children experience basic gardening including using our greenhouse. We will be starting with children in Mrs Wilson‘s F2 (Reception) class. Best Wishes Roger Marshall Head teacher
