All eyes were on the stage as performers entertained a sold out audience in school at our annual 'Haxey's Got Talent' on 20th March. 22 acts in total took to the stage including singers, groups, comedians, magicians and dancers to name a few. The opening act were 'The Notelets' who covered the popular Oasis track 'Wonderwall' during which they paid homage to the music video complete with Noel Galleghar-esq glasses! Second up were Illyana Player, Honor Argall and Amy Joy who performed their self choreographed dance to Call me Maybe'. It was then the turn of Isaac Baguma, Harry Reddish and Zander Argall who performed their comedy sketch inspired by what they'd seen on TV. Brave Charlotte Smith of year 3 performed alone by singing 'Let it Go' from the recent Disney smash 'Frozen'. She sang beautifully and was certainly dressed the part. Next came musicians Ella Hill and Emily Glew on flute, performing 'My Grandfather's Clock'. Max Jackson performed 'Parisian Walkways' on his electric guitar, followed by dancers Emily Berry and Corin Player who performed to Drive my Car' by The Beatles. Soloist Katy Orton sang Make It Shine' from TV's 'Victorious'. Singing duo Martha Bruce and Ruby Lewin sang 'Colours of the Rainbow', before and amazing display of magic by Jack Macleod, with the obligatory assistance for a member of the audience. Rounding off the first half was ukulele playing Emily Young performing 'Wanna be Like You' from The Jungle Book, even donning a bear onesie to complete her act! After a short break which saw the drawing of the raffle and the opportunity to buy a choc ice, the second half acts took to the stage. Dancers from Miss Alex's Dance Group had the audience clapping along to Step's popular track '5,6,7,8', followed by Magic Leo and another amazing display of trickery, or was in magic? Next was Abigail Wilkinson and Sophie Reddish singing not only one but a medley of popular songs. Abigail Moorhouse gave a beautiful rendition of 'Minuet' on her clarinet. Chloe Walker danced to 'Ring Ring', followed by Sam (Heywood) and Ed (Chatwin) with their self titled act Salmonhead' and their comedy sketch which was very entertaining. Chloe Steele performed on her flute, followed by Neve Clarke and Abby Smith who danced to 'Wannabe' complete with Spice Girls' inspired outfits. The penny whistle came next played by Maisie Thompson, with Holly Howard then singing 'Til I Hear You Sing' from 'Love Never Dies'. The final act had everyone in stitches as The Three Morphateers who sang, rapped and danced 'Radioactive' in their full body stockinged outfits. All the acts put lots of hard work into their performances, which was obvious in the display of their talents. Thanks to all who took part, it is more than fair to say that all the acts had stacks of talent! Thanks also to the wonderful teachers, Mrs Mancey, Mrs McKay, Mrs Brown and especially Miss Collins who compared the evening, and lastly to all who supported it. With ticket sales and raffle takings the total amount raised is still to be confirmed however is believed to be in excess of £400. This invaluable amount will do wonders for the school and pupils. Further to this, the PTFA held a chocolate themed Easter Bingo in the last week of term and an amazing £86 was raised. Again, masses of thanks to all who supported this, and we hope you enjoyed it!

First Responder Team Celebrates Ten Years Serving The Community

The “Five Villages First Responder” team who are based in Misterton celebrated their 10th Birthday on Saturday (29th March) and saw a huge turn out from the local community to an event held to mark the occasion. The celebration event was held to thank local individuals, organisations and businesses for their support over the last ten years, and offered complimentary cake and refreshments to all who attended. “We have received massive support since the team launched in 2004 and the event was our way of saying thank you back to all those involved. The public turned out on mass to the event on Saturday and it was a real success” said Martyn Johnson, who is the coordinator of the First Responder unit. “People who have organised fund raising events in the past came along. Several patients that we have been called out to over the years also attended; seeing them and hearing their stories and words of praise for the care given to them by the team was very satisfying for everyone involved. Praise and a very big thanks also goes to all the dedicated volunteers who have given up hundreds of hours each year as part of their role as Community Responders.” The group also showed life saving techniques to the public including how to perform hands only CPR, as well as displays of Community First Responder (CFR) equipment and information. A special cake in the shape of an automated defibrillator was cut as part of the celebration. The CFR team work alongside East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) in the local villages and since they launched have attended over 1,675 call outs. Because of their location within the local community they are called to potentially life threatening emergencies and can give care to patients until the arrival of the ambulance. Mick Barnett-Connolly (Head of EMAS Community Response) said: “The Five Villages First Responder team does a remarkable job. They give up their time to be on call to help save more lives in the community. We at EMAS would like to say congratulations on a fantastic achievement for the scheme and the people it has served in the local communities during the last ten years.” The team covers the villages of Misterton, Beckingham, Walkeringham, Gringley on the Hill, West Stockwith and surrounding areas. A further CFR unit which is part of the same group has just launched to cover Mattersey, Clayworth and Everton, with more potential volunteers required in all of these villages. For further information about the Community First Responder group please visit the website at www.fvfr.co.uk or email contact@fvfr.co.uk.

CHILDREN RAISE FUNDS FOR AFRICA Children of Year 4 at Misterton Primary School held a fund-raising event to support the Underprivileged Children’s Centre (UCC) in Ghana. The sum of £160 was raised at a cake sale – and pictured are some of the children with their delicious home-made cakes. UCC is in one of the poorest inner city areas of Accra, Ghana, where all education must be paid for. This is often too expensive for some families and many children never go to school or have a basic education. UCC is run by volunteers. The facilities are far from ideal: children sit on cramped benches 34 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements with wobbly tables, but UCC does provide basic education to those who would otherwise not have an education.

This very handsome fellow is Jack, a three year old Lurcher Cross. Jack is a really friendly boy who loves company and is very well behaved in the house. He needs an active home with long walks and a secure garden is required. He is fine with other dogs, and would be ok in a home with older dog-aware children. Jack is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you are interested in meeting this smashing boy, please give us a call on 01427 728705.

In this article I look at how you can control some of the summer pests and diseases on your trees. If you have carried out your pruning to allow good air circulation and light penetration into the tree, the free air movement will help to keep diseases to a low level. Similarly, the removal and burning of dead and diseased material is important in reducing pest and disease levels. This should be done as frequently as possible. You might set up a habitat in your garden which attracts and provides a refuge for beneficial insects and birds that feed on pests. Using insecticides or fungicides should probably only be used to control insects or diseases which get out of hand. Using them annually does not encourage the tree to develop and maintain its own immune system. Codling moth This can be a significant pest and I suffer from codling moth on a number of my apples. The adult moths lay their eggs on developing frigates and on foliage. The lava borrows down to the core of the fruit, leaving a red – ringed entry hole in the side of the fruit or near the eye. On cutting open an affected fruit, the small pinkish larva may be seen. After about 4 weeks, fully grown larvae vacate the fruit which may or may not drop to the ground. Try to reduce the number of suitable overwintering sites of the larvae by removing any loose bark and other damage to the tree or nearby. In the middle of May you can put up pheromone traps in the trees. You can buy these at garden centres. I use one about every 12 feet. The sticky surface traps moths. You remove the traps at the end of the season. I have found them useful but not the complete answer.

A Helping Hand House Clearance

Powdery mildew You can see shoots infected with mildew since they carry very small and narrow leaves covered with grey white matter. Flowers may be small and fail to open. New affected shoots appear pale grey in colour. Any fruit that grows may not be badly affected. You should prune out any infected growth before the trees come into leaf and either burn or remove them is from site. In the next article I will look at some more pests and diseases. The Apple of Your Isle is a local organisation which encourages the growth and use of apples and pears. If you would like more information about our activities or would like to talk about your trees and fruit, please contact Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.

The Trentside Federation – School News from St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools As we all enjoyed getting ready for Easter at the end of the Spring Term, remembering the Easter Story and rejoicing at our Easter Services held at both schools thinking about Jesus’ resurrection. St Mary’s was filled with some beautiful singing, with one piece led by Mrs Elliott (Class 2 teacher) who has a beautiful singing voice. St Martin’s youngest pupils also had an opportunity Honor with Mr to meet an unusual creature that is connected to the Easter Story Grumpy who – a cockerel that crowed three times. Our Reception children at she has raised Owston Ferry received a surprise visit from ‘Mr Grumpy’ who since he was a belongs to Honor in Class 1. The whole class enjoyed this chick experience and had many questions during the session that was led by Honor’s mum. ‘Mr Grumpy’ tucked into his favourite corn feed, amusing the children with his messy eating habits! Honor’s mum explained that all roosters have a ‘comb’. The children also learned that the red skin hanging below Mr Grumpy’s head is called a ‘wattle’ and this helps him to keep cool. Honor has looked after Mr Grumpy since he was a chick. Honor told the class “When he was born he was really grumpy, but I just cuddled him and looked after him - now he isn’t grumpy at all!” Class 1 at St Martin’s also had another special visitor - a policeman. This visit was linked in to the Reception pupils reading the different stories from the Usborne children’s book “Jobs People Do” which includes a wide variety of different professions. This book provided a fun starting point to learn about different occupations and what people wear to do them. When it was time to change the role play area in our Early Years Setting at St Ben who is Martin’s there was a huge vote for a police station and jail! Luckily enjoying being a there was just enough baking foil left over from the previous role policeman play area (a rocket) to make some sturdy looking iron railings to keep those robbers behind bars! The children have really enjoyed some first-hand experiential learning this term and are now enjoying acting out some of what they have learned. Class 2 at West Butterwick has had a busy term. It all started off with a big question ‘Is There Anybody Out There?’. In response to this question the pupils engaged in working with a local artist Martin Maywood, producing some ‘space pictures’ and learning about and trying out some of Martin’s experimental and unique techniques! In Design Technology, the children enjoyed designing and making their own aliens, some of which were edible! The end of term was a cause for celebration as a team of pupils from West Butterwick participated in the Scunthorpe ‘Wake Up and Shake Up Festival’. All were proud of being awarded a commendation for their performance at the Baths Hall in Scunthorpe. Well done! We are now looking forward to the start of the Summer Term, especially since we have planted some new crops in our large planters. We shall keep you updated on how these are coming along over the coming months. We hope that, once again, we may enjoy some delicious home made soup with our home-grown vegetables! WESTWOODSIDE CARS WATCH OUT BELOW Drivers tend to ignore all but the most basic of road signs. A red light will still (thankfully) get most drivers to stop, most of the time. But a junction marking stating “STOP” in large capital letters is often ignored; at best it will be treated as a “give way” and then only by the locals who know the dangers well, but still opt to downgrade the risk in order to save a moment or two. This may be because we all suffer from “signage overload”: there are so many instructions, official and unofficial, and so many direction signs and road signs competing for our attention that we already have our head full of information coming at us at eye level. That makes it easier to miss the ones painted on the tarmac beneath us. Road users often seem totally unaware of the relevance of road markings, even when they see them. But as a rule of thumb, the more paint there is on the road surface, the more potential danger there is. Nobody has chosen to go to the time and expense (not to mention the considerable risk) of putting paint on the road without a reason. Sadly even experienced motorists seem to be ignorant of the markings. I was recently told that a double white line down the middle of the carriageway was there to “stop us turning right across it.” This is worrying, because those particular markings are there for quite a different purpose: to prevent vehicles crossing onto the other carriageway at that point. Some cross-hatchings are no-go areas (those that have a surrounding solid white line). You should not use these areas unless it is a serious emergency or you are directed there by a police officer. As well as the official marking on the road surface, there are the unofficial ones that can also serve to remind the observant driver of potential danger. The classic these days is the long, snaking skid mark. That means some unfortunate has had a crash, or a near miss, or certainly taken drastic action for some reason. When you see these, ask your self what might have happened, and see if there is anything you can do to prevent getting into the same situation. Safe Driving Paul Tuke. Senior Training Observer.
