Community News Epworth Flower Club News On Monday 14th March members of the Epworth and District Flower Club were welcomed by the chairman Carolyn Drury to the first meeting of the club’s 55th year. Carolyn drew the attention of the group to an article in the national magazine “The Flower Arranger” which advertised a flower festival which will take place in May on the 20/21 ……in Scunthorpe in April. Gill Mills from Nottingham was then introduced and she began her demonstration entitled “Floral Gems”. Gill named her demonstration using the meaning “something of great beauty” rather than the precious stone meaning but did adapt one arrangement to infer emeralds in honour of the group’s birthday. Gill’s own honeymoon was represented as her first gem and she used an Ali Baba basket and a scarf to set the scene of Tunisia. The flowers she used were deep red gerbera, Cherry Brandy roses, La Puma lilies and Tropical anthurium. Her foliage was Fatsia, formium, which she wired, aspidistra and palm leaves and all were inserted around twisted bleached ivy twigs. Gills commentary was very amusing but the theme conveyed the wonderful tones of the stunning sunsets. Her second arrangement was placed in a “guzunda” and this was the arrangement she called Emerald for the club’s benefit. Tall canes of molucella and dark green chrysanthemums were used to represent ten children with whom she had spent some of her professional life. Children’s drawings of flowers were represented in the third arrangement. A stunning effect was created using curled aspidistra leaves and gerbera. To hold this arrangement Gill used a fluted vase which she considered a gem. Another interest of great significance in Gill’s life was music and her fourth piece of work represented the musical stave. Into a wonderful black frame A garden was created in Gill’s next arrangement, divided by a fence into two raffle prizes. This was very imaginative and contained spring flowers such as tulips, daffodils iris and some roses. To conclude Gill created a traditional pedestal crescent shape.
The next meeting on Monday, 9th May will be a workshop (always fun) and we shall work on creations to celebrate The Queen’s birthday. The demonstrator will bring everything necessary for all to make an arrangement suitable to say “Happy Birthday Ma’am”. There is a charge of £10 for workshops and there will also be a plant and seed table. Do join us at 7.30pm in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey.
The Isle of Axholme Garden Club’s next meeting will be held on Tuesday 10 May at 7.30pm in the Imperial Hall, Chapel Street, Epworth. There will also be a raffle, book sale and refreshments. Membership fee is £12 per annum. Visitors £2 per meeting. Everyone welcome. The Annual Plant Sale at the Imperial Hall will be on Saturday 21 May from 9 am – 12 noon. A variety of plants, shrubs and vegetables will be available at very reasonable prices. Swopping one uniform for another Former fireman Chris Potton has gone from working in one service to providing another in the same area. Chris Potton and his wife Tess have been running the GreenThumb Doncaster East branch since February 2009, starting with about 400 customers. They now provide professional lawn care for almost 2, 500 customers treating 5,000 lawns in their area. Chris spent 32 years in the Fire service in the Humberside area but on retirement decided he wanted to do something completely different. He said: “I was in the fire service and retired after 32 years and wanted to do something else and as a friend of mine already ran a GreenThumb franchise I thought I would also give it a go. “I started off working on the fire engines but gradually worked myself up through the ranks and some of the area we cover as franchisees is also where I worked in the fire service. “Before I left the fire service I was involved with best value work and maintaining standards and I have been able to bring that experience to the franchise.” Chris said that they have worked hard to look after an area stretching from the east side of Doncaster to the western side of Scunthorpe including Thorne, Finningley, Westwoodside, Epworth, Crowle and Messingham. He said: “It really has been quite full on, more than I anticipated but enjoyable and I am now taking on an extra lawn technician so that I can improve my work/life balance!!” Chris, along with Tim, Dan and Matty, are the fully trained and uniformed lawn operatives who carry out our professional lawn treatments, while Tess and Elaine are on hand to deal with telephone enquiries and coordinate activities from the office. He explained that during the main growing season – from March to October - each customer receives regular, pre-arranged lawn treatments. Prices for treatment are determined by the area of the lawn and basic lawn treatments start from just £15, the average for the area being approximately £23 and monthly Direct Debit is now available. We also provide additional lawn treatments, such as aeration and scarification to help keep your lawn Chris and Tess Potton wishing GreenThumb looking its very best, all year round! a Happy 30th Birthday GreenThumb, which celebrates 30 years in business this year, is the largest lawn treatment company in the UK and has over 220 franchises all over the UK with more than 450,000 lawns being treated every 10 weeks. West Butterwick Primary School offers Outstanding Early Years Provision (from 3yrs old) as rated by Ofsted – January 2016. Places are available in this ‘outstanding’ Early Years setting on the Isle of Axholme – We offer Nursery places from the term after a child’s 3rd birthday. West Butterwick C of E Primary School is a small educational setting of 48 pupils in total (Nursery through to Year 6) with a high staff to child ratio. Classes are small, learning is well-matched to each child’s needs and there is excellent pastoral care. Children are taught and developed through their interests and therefore are ‘well motivated and keen to learn’ - Ofsted January 2016. Early Years children benefit from ‘free flow’ between indoor and outdoor provision, enabling them to develop a deep level of learning through being stimulated via their interests. Ofsted January 2016 recognised that our children are ‘supported by exceptionally proficient early years staff…. the skilled staff ensure that children are stimulated through a range of interesting activities’. The website www.schoolguide.co.uk rates West Butterwick Primary School as a ‘top performing primary school’ locally and nationally, according to key performance data including; SATS results, Ofsted reports, ‘Value Added’ score, Pupil to teacher ratio, Parent reviews and ratings. The school has good links with the local community and organises a range of exciting educational visits throughout the year, encouraging pupils to extend their learning from their enjoyment of these experiences, such as theatre visits. Children have a well-managed timetable enabling them to have varied adult-led (small group) activities as well as childinitiated activities during which the adults support, encouraging and guiding the pupils to enhance their learning further. ‘Adults provide plenty of opportunities for children to develop early writing and mathematical skills and relationships between adults and children are excellent, as is the quality of care. This is why children feel safe and confident in their learning.’ Ofsted January 2016 ‘The proportion of children meeting and exceeding the early learning goals at the end of Reception class is above average.’ Ofsted January 2016 To read West Butterwick Primary School’s Ofsted Report in full (all five areas graded as ‘outstanding’) please visit: https://www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk/school/118018 The school has places available in all year groups, from Nursery (3 years old) right through to year 6 (11 years old). Veteran Jon takes on South African challenge
A Doncaster veteran is in training to tackle a gruelling six-day cycle ride across South Africa at the end of the month – on a recumbent trike! Jon Knott, from Westwoodside, enjoyed a successful 27-year career with the RAF until being struck down with Multiple Sclerosis. Along with three other veterans and a team from one of Help for Heroes biggest supporters, PWS – a North Eastbased distributor of kitchen components – Jon will cycle a demanding 320-mile route across the Western Cape that incorporates 22,000ft of punishing climbs. They will set off from Fanschhoek on April 25th and arrive in Knysna on April 30th. It’s a venture dreamed up by Mark Stephenson, CEO of PWS, who has set himself a fundraising target of £250,000. This will be donated to Phoenix House – Help for Heroes northern Recovery Centre in Catterick which supports Jon and hundreds more wounded, injured and sick servicemen, women, veterans and their families. The ride, known as Blood, Sweat and Gears, not only represents a significant physical challenge to the participants, especially Jon whose illness means he is unable to ride an upright bike, but, importantly, provides the veterans with a focus – something that Jon very much appreciates. “Although I can’t work anymore due to physical and mental problems, you have to carry on and live life while you can,” said 46-year-old Jon. “The South Africa cycle ride is part of that … it gives me a goal. Once that was set, I was determined to be able to say ‘Yes – I can do that!’” Setting goals has enabled Jon to reach the fitness level required to tackle the challenge. When he first received his trike, funded by a grant from Help for Heroes, his target was to cycle 25km. Once achieved, that increased to 50km. Now, he is focusing on speed and is close to achieving 25km per hour. Which, for someone who admits to not having been sporty before the onset of his illness, is not bad going! He took up cycling at the suggestion of his physiotherapist at Headley Court (the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre in Surrey) as a way of filling his time after being medically discharged. Jon, who is married to Vicky and has a daughter, Jade, joined the RAF from college to be an electronics technician in telecommunications. Much of his career was spent working on projects with different branches of the Armed Forces, known as ‘jointery’. In 2006, by which time he had been commissioned as an engineer officer, a colleague commented on Jon’s leg dragging in an abnormal fashion. Tests resulted in a diagnosis of Relapsing Remitting MS, but Jon was allowed to continue in Service, eventually becoming an instructor for engineer Officer training. He went on to receive an AOC (Air Officer Commanding) commendation for work carried out at Digby (part of the Ministry of Defence's Joint Service Signals Organisation) before his condition deteriorated. Joining Jon on the ride will be former England rugby union player, now Sky Sports commentator, Will Greenwood who has visited Help for Heroes first Recovery Centre, Tedworth House in Wiltshire. “I saw the wonderful work being carried out there and understand the quality of the rehabilitation being given to those suffering both physical and mental wounds… and all that needs funding!” said Will, who, over the last few months, has had to add cycling to his normal keep fit regime of running and swimming to ensure he is able to complete the ride. “I made a programme for Sky called Riding the Dales where I completed stage one of the Tour de France in Yorkshire and the last 30km to Harrogate nearly did me in! I am hoping that cycling in a group in the sunshine will make all my training worthwhile – there have to be some perks!” Will is a friend of businessman Mark Stephenson who is not only funding the places for the four veterans as part of his ongoing support for Help For Heroes but has underwritten the cost of the challenge to ensure that every penny raised goes to the Charity. “Over the years that I have been visiting Phoenix House, I have been able to see the difference that the organisation makes to people’s lives,” he commented. “The Centre is an uplifting and positive place but I know that the work of Help for Heroes will never be finished as they have pledged to be support their beneficiaries ‘for life’ – and that costs money. “Cycling in South Africa is something that I have wanted to do for some time. I deliberately chose a large scale challenge in the hope it will raise awareness and persuade people to donate funds for the cause.” South African Airways and the South African Tourist Board have met the bill for transporting all the team and their bikes to and from the UK. advertise please or 07912 643010 35 To support JonTo by donating to the Blood, call Sweat01302 & Gears532676 fund for Help for Heroes https://www.justgiving.com/ BloodSweatandGears2016/

www.elmfieldlandscapes.co.uk These two lovely boys are Lenni and Diesel, who are 5 & 6. Unbelievably these adorable cats were brought to us as their owner moved house and left them behind. They are both affectionate, friendly cats who will make great family pets. Lenni (black) is the quieter one and Diesel is more adventurous! As they have been through so much, we would love to re-home them together. They are both neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you feel that you could offer these boys a lovely home together, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705.

News from Haxey Church of England Primary School Despite our recent return from the Easter break, there was no let up for our pupils prior to the end of term with plenty of opportunity for fun! First of all came some serious fundraising for the fantastic cause of Sports Relief. Our own super stars dressed as their favourite sports personalities, and despite some risky weather completed a 'Sports Relief Mile' within school grounds (that's 18 times round the playground!). Every single class from our 4 year olds in FS2 up to our 11 year olds in year 6 took part and not one child complained! Along with the sale of wrist bands, our school raised just short of £300. This is a fantastic achievement. Many congratulations to Logan Llewellyn of year 6 who ran the fastest mile at 5 minutes and 12 seconds. Such was the buzz after the running of the mile, staff are looking to make this a regular, and perhaps daily activity to keep the children fit and healthy, and ready for learning each day. On this theme, one of our parents has started a running club. Mrs Llewellyn has kindly given up her time to 'run' this popular activity. If you feel you have a particular skill that children may enjoy, or learn from, and are willing to give up some of your time to perhaps run a club, please do not hesitate to get in touch with school. This may be anything from gardening to photography, history to reading. We encourage our children whenever we are able to broaden their extra-curricular interests to support their learning journey. The board of governors at school have been working hard towards our impending Ofsted inspection that we are due any time. Some members recently spent all day at school as part of a school 'Visioning Day', examining what we are good at, what we aspire to and liaising with children about what they like and dislike about school. The children were impeccably behaved and gave the governors some great feedback and ideas we can take forward. If you need to speak to any member of the governing body, please contact the school office to arrange a mutually convenient time to meet. Easter was not forgotten amongst all of these activities, with the usual church service up at St Nicholas', and also Easter Bingo, raising over £100 for school funds, as well as an Easter Treasure Hunt. As part of the hunt we received a special visitor in the form of the Easter Bunny himself! Congratulations to all our winners, and thank you to all who supported this much needed fundraising for our school.

As part of our school improvement, members of staff have been looking at how other schools implement different methods of teaching and feedback for their children. Mrs Lewin, year 2 teacher, visited Bottesford Infants and worked with teachers on lesson plans, discussing what the children enjoyed and tailoring their lessons to their enjoyment of learning. She has also adopted their 'critique' approach, whereby children complete a piece of work as a first draft. They are the offered feedback by their peers (what is good? What can you do to improve?) and complete a second draft, before more feedback is given when they complete a masterpiece. She applied this recently to some artwork on the year 2 topic of Florence Nightingale and as you can see from the pictures, the quality of work completed is outstanding. This appraisal will be adopted a cross the school in all subjects which we hope will raise standards.
Year 3 had a special visitor from the Ropewalk in Barton prior to the Easter break. Janine Knight came to show the children how to build a stone age inspired shelter as part of their topic work. She brought along a special machine that tightly rolled newspapers into a cylinder shape, before the children constructed the shelter. As you can see from the pictures, they've done an amazing job! The shelter will be used as a reading area for the rest of the school term. Thank you to parents and to school for contributing to this activity. Until next time, we hope you enjoy the spring weather....whatever that may be!

EPWORTH MUSIC DAY SATURDAY 18TH JUNE 2016 It’s 9.59am on Saturday 18 June and in one minute’s time the streets of Epworth will again resound with music and song. Yes, it’s Epworth Music Day again – 7 hours of music and song. A grand day out! And all free of charge! This year there will be again over 40 different acts performing throughout the day and evening to make the town come live again to a day of music, song and dance. This year we have attracted choirs, barbershop quartet, brass ensemble, jazz group, bellringers, folk bands, rock bands, Morris dancers, mediaeval musicians and dancers, folk singers and musicians, guitarists. Surely something for every musical taste? During the day starting at 10am and running through until 5pm there will be simultaneous performances programmed at 10 different venues in the town. In the car park of the White Bear, in the gardens of the Wesley Methodist Memorial Church, in Mayfair Court, in the car park of the Queens Head, in Market Place, in Fountains Court, outside the sheltered accommodation in Albion Street, in the car park of the Mowbray Arms and in the gardens of the Old Rectory. There will also be an impromptu stage area outside China Palace for anyone to sign up and perform. If it is wet the show will still go on, but all of the performances will move to adjacent indoor venues in the town centre. In the evening there will be a free concert in St Andrews Church, starting at 7pm when 7 of the groups who have played during the day will appear again. At the same time local rock bands will be playing again in the Queens Head starting at 8.30pm. We are once again very grateful for the financial support of Epworth Town Council. We just now need lots of people to come and enjoy this day of free music in our lovely town. So, it would be great if you could join us in celebrating music making in the community. Join in by listening and watching or busking and helping at impromptu sessions. It will be a grand day out! Epworth Music Day 2016 – Saturday 18th June from 10-5pm and then again from 7pm in the evening. Put it in your diary now! For more details go to www.epworthmusicday.com or our Facebook page or call Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.
