FORMER POSTIE WINS ACHIEVER’S AWARD One of Misterton’s former postmen, who has taken up a number of voluntary roles on retirement, has been awarded an Achiever’s Award by the District Council. Malcolm Moody was presented with his award by the Chair of Bassetlaw District Council, Cllr Jim Anderson, at an awards ceremony in March. He was nominated for his caring attitude to residents when in employment and for the many unpaid tasks he has taken on since: Misterton Bowls Club, North Notts Lions (regularly appearing as Santa), painting the scenery for the West Stockwith Players’ annual pantomime – and more.

HYMNATHON’ ORGANISTS WILL PLAY EVERY HYMN IN THE BOOK TO RAISE FUNDS FOR ORGAN APPEAL Resident organist at All Saints’ Parish Church, Fiona Law, will lead a group of keen players for a ‘Hymnathon’ - working their way through the Church’s hymn book, playing at least one verse of all 766 hymns on the Church’s 1875 organ in aid of the Church’s organ fund. Organists will be at the keyboard on Saturday 29 April and Sunday 30 April from 10.00am to 4.00pm, and on Monday 1 May between the hours of 10.00am and 2.00pm. Fiona is looking for sponsors – and, for a £5 donation, will play a ‘request’: perhaps a hymn played at a wedding or other special event. Visitors are invited to drop in and hear Fiona and guest organists play. All funds will go towards the Church’s organ appeal. Anyone able to help with the appeal should contact Hazel Duffner, the Church’s Treasurer, in confidence on (01427) 890877.

THE W.W.2 DIARY OF CLIFFORD SPENCER 1764164 Gunner. SPENCER Clifford 27 L.A.A. (Light Ack Ack) Regt, R.A. (Royal Artillery) (107 Bty. (Battery)) Adapted & edited for publication by Anthony E. Catherall

Sep. 15th. 10.30am lovely morning. I’ve just got a pair of shorts on and shoes. We are thousands of feet up and can look down on to the plains, even when a few Jerry planes are going over that way; you look down instead of up. Everything is very quiet. Have just had more figs and grapes. We are moving tonight, nearer the village, see if we can find a place for shelter when the rain comes which won’t be so long now. My heel is much better and hope to make the trip tonight. One chap with us got a book parcel just before we left, so he brought them, and we have some reading to pass time on. Sep. 16th Last night we moved, what a journey again all up hill, sweat simply roll off us. We got a grand little spot just outside the village, there were goats, donkeys, could hear a wireless, kiddies crying, dogs yelping, the church bell kept tolling. It was really lovely; we came across some more of our chaps. This morning after, not too good a nights rest, very cold, we get up early and started to get stakes, etc for making a shelter, but had hardly started when a civvy came and told us, that Jerry was coming, so had to pack up and come more into the hills, not far though, it’s not a bad spot, but there doesn’t seem to be any vineyards about. We had bread and roasted potatoes for breakfast. I take back what I said about the civvies wanting clothing every time they brought stuff to us. We have had bread, water, macaroni, cheese, and fruit brought today, and they wouldn’t take a thing. Women have been and young girls and all this afternoon we have had kiddies round us. Evening, we start building a shack for if it rains. Sep. 17th. The civvies bring us some more bread, potatoes and cooked macaroni for dinner. This afternoon I go into village for water, what a place, two taps to supply all the village and they are only going so many hours. The streets are rough cobbles and grit. The women squabble over the water, kiddies in bare feet. Plenty of donkey’s women and girls with trays of corn cleaning it ready for the miller to grind. The women carry everything on their head. Most are dressed in rags. The homes look terrible, all concrete floors. Sep. 18th. Saturday, a week ago today since we left camp. It has gone quick and full of adventures. The civvies have done us well again today. We hear that our forces are 10 miles from Rome; also that Jerry is only a few miles from where we are. I go black-berrying, there are plenty about? Sep. 19th. Some of the lads go black-berrying and some apples. Later at midday a scare for us. Ten Jerries come into the village, pick between 20 and 30 chaps up; we get into the bushes and keep there until dark. Later the kiddies come with food and water, which we were well ready for. Also told us that Jerry had gone, so one more day we are free to roam. Sep. 20th. We sleep in our shack we have built, much better, best night’s sleep so far, it was warmer because although it’s hot in the day its cold at night and I’ve no top coat now. We are wondering if Jerry will come today. 10.30am a woman brings cooked potatoes, not much but good. All is very quiet this morning; one or two Jerry planes over that’s all. Later 5pm Jerry comes to village picks 40 men up, some gave themselves up, can’t get any news. Sep. 21st. It looked like rain when we went to sleep, but morning came without any, and it’s been a lovely day. Went black-berrying. A Shepherd gave us a little bread, then later his daughter brought bread, water, potatoes and macaroni again, and she’s our salvation. Not enough water for washing and shaving so we all look a bit rough, this is our 12th. Day out of camp, and I’ve had two shaves and one wash. Sep. 22nd. Jerry has not paid the village a visit today, hope he has gone for good, but we are keeping out, in case he does. The RASC (Royal Army Service Corps) as we call them brought a stack of food, but fourteen men want a lot, I sure could do with a good feed, but if possible we shall carry on until our lads come, (that is if Jerry doesn’t get us first) The news is good, and we don’t think we shall have long to wait. Sep. 23rd. We had just got to bed last night when they came and brought bread, apples and a box of matches. We have a shave this morning, but not enough for a wash. We are a happy lot at the moment; some of the lads are playing cards, some on stag, plenty of fun and laughter. It takes a lot to get the Tommy down hearted. We had egg flakes; bread and butter for breakfast with tea for drink. Sep. 24th. 5pm. Just got back from fruit hunting, got a few apples and grapes. We are out of cigs now, but have a few packets of Itie bacca, (tobacco) which we make cigs, out of toilet roll paper

New Season news at Epworth Old Rectory Spring is definitely here after a long busy winter of events, cleaning and preparing the exhibitions for reopening at the beginning of March. The Snowdrops made their early appearance closely followed by the Daffodils, Tulips and Primroses. We have new bird boxes designed to attract Tree Sparrows, a declining species so hopefully we may have nests and breeding pairs: we'll just have to wait and see. Plans are in progress to have new toilets and move the gift shop to a new space but it takes time to get work such as that done, so it won't affect our ability to open as normal this season. We have a full programme of events planned for the year so keep an eye out for posters, and on out website and facebook page. The first of those events in to be the Country Fayre on May 7th. This is going to be a real family day out with lots of attractions, Birds of Prey, Reptiles, Weird and wonderful creatures, lots of local community groups, Thorne photography club and the lambs have made a timely appearance on the croft to be included. There will also be donkeys, craft stalls and plant stalls, Streebeat and Heartsease dance groups, as well as, hopefully some vintage vehicles. There is to be a painting competition for the children (see the posters and facebook page for details). Any child bringing a painting for the art competition will get free entry to the event. We have been lucky enough to get a well known and respected artist based in Doncaster, Mr Terry Chipp to judge the competition. Terry's work has been widely exhibited and his Out of the Box series of paintings has been exhibited at the Cast in Doncaster, and will be exhibited at his studio workshop in May. We also have another big event coming up in July, as this year is the 275th anniversary Of Susanna Wesley's death, so watch out for more information at a later date. Part of the fun of being a volunteer at the rectory is meeting all the new people who visit us. In the last 2 weeks we've had visitors whose ancestors have close links to John Wesley, one of whom came to Epworth and visited the family at the Rectory in 1734. The Ghanaian ministers were a joy to look after, their excitement at being in the home of the Wesley's was catching for every one involved. And we have the Radio Humberside outside broadcast visiting us on May 3rd to do a programme from the grounds. If you would like to join our happy band of volunteers, even one half day each week would be welcome, please call Gillian on 8782268 to find out how to help us keep this part of the Isle history alive and well.

Children’s Art Competition Do you love animals? Do you have a favourite pet? Do you love drawing or painting? Are you aged between 3 – 11? If you tick these boxes, we’d love you to enter our Art Competition. Categories: 3-6 years & 7 – 11 years Prizes to be awarded by our guest judge Terry Chipp, an award winning professional artist and teacher from Doncaster. We would like you to paint us a picture or make a model of an animal of your choice. If you bring it along to our Country Fayre on Sunday 7 May, the picture’s painter will get free admission to the event. Alternatively, pictures can be delivered to the Rectory on Friday and Saturday. Please put your name, title of your picture, age and contact details on the back of the picture as we would hate someone to win & we’re not able to tell you. We are happy for a grown-up to help you with this. Thank you

The sun was shining on Tia Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue last Saturday for the grand opening of the long-awaited new kennel block at Mill Race Farm, Finningley. There was a fantastic turnout with many visitors bringing their own greyhounds and other dogs. The special guests for the day were the Reverend Kate Bottley, her co-celebrity husband Graham, and not forgetting their lovely greyhound Buster from the hit Channel 4 show Gogglebox. Kate and Graham declared the new kennel block open with the assistance of two beautiful blue Tia rescue Sponsor dogs, Glen and Molly. It was great to see the sponsored kennels from a few local businesses too. The dogs at the rescue all loved hanging out with a celebrity for the afternoon all individually receiving kind words and a love, not one dog went by without getting an introduction and a stroke. Special attention was given to Michael, a recovering greyhound receiving care, attention and lots of love at Tia rescue. Michael is one of a number of Tia dogs that has had a traumatic past, so for him to feel comfortable receiving all of the fuss from Kate was a wonderful site to see. He is now looking for a home to call his own. No animal was left out of the proceedings as Kate and Graham went on to feed the horses, stroke the donkeys and chat with the turkeys. The vet room visit was particularly upsetting, but plays a vital part at Tia Rescue as this is where all the animals are cared for, nursed, loved all with TLC from all staff (including volunteers) that work here at Tia. This is what all your donations go towards, food, shelter, vet care, medication, utilities, necessary equipment and much, much more. Every penny helps. After browsing the onsite charity shop and pet shop, Kate and Graham enjoyed a well-deserved cuppa in the dog friendly café, and not to be left out, the lovely Buster was treated to an ice-cream. Dogs like Michael need a forever home to call their own, and have so much love to give. Perhaps your life

needs a rescue greyhound in it, just like the Reverend Kate? She adopted, and so could you! Tia Sponsor Dogs spend their retirement at Tia Rescue as they are not suitable for rehoming due to a variety of reasons, so need sponsors to help pay towards their long-term care at the rescue. Could you sponsor a greyhound, donkey or one of our horses? Any donation is appreciated and can make a great difference. Since it first came in to being over 20 years ago, Tia Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue has rehomed over 4,000 greyhounds and is the largest greyhound rescue in the north of England. At any one me the rescue cares for around 100 greyhounds. Based on a 70-acre farm on the outskirts of Finningley, Doncaster, Tia Rescue is also an approved Shire Horse Visitor Centre is one of only five in the country. Donkeys, ponies, goats, sheep and chickens are addi onal residents at the centre that boasts a dog-friendly, five-star cafe with free wi-fi, charity shop and pet shop. There is also a children’s play area, and a six-acre orchard walk for visitors to explore. Tia Rescue are now looking forward to their annual Spring Fair on Sunday 9th April, 11am -3pm. There will be plenty of stalls including home made cakes and preserves, crafts, tombola, bottle stall and raffle. Hatfield fly-ball team will also be making an appearance, so pop down to Tia for a great day out and show your support to all of the animals. This lovely boy is Ben, a young Lurcher who has been with the Rescue for several months. Ben is a lovely, laid-back, gentle boy who is great with people and very affectionate. He has nice manners, and walks very well on the lead. He is good with other dogs, but not cats and small furries, and would be best in a home with older children. Ben is constantly overlooked simply because of his colour, so please come and meet him – he is adorable. Ben is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. Call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705 if you are interested in meeting this smashing boy.

Epworth and Flower District Flower Club News On Monday 13th March members of the Epworth and District Flower Club enjoyed an evening with “an old friend” Sheila Clark. Her demonstration was titled “March Odyssey”. Sheila, a well known national demonstrator has visited for us before and never fails to produce an enjoyable evening. On Monday 10th April similarly we welcomed Pauline Foster, another long standing, relatively local demonstrator. Pauline’s demonstration was entitled “Infinite Possibilities”. She explained her title was derived from an expression she frequently used on finding interesting containers. Her arrangements were accompanied by a commentary about her experiences as a competitor in flower shows, local, regional and even the Chelsea Flower Show. Pauline had been a lecturer and continues to teach at several North Midlands Regional NAFAS days. Her arrangements all looked very achievable by many of us and she gave tips as she worked. Pauline’s first arrangement used Spring flowers with pussy willow, delicate pink tulips, lisianthus and sea holly as well as others. A very pretty opening arrangement. Five more, very different arrangements were produced. In one she used blossom, white lisianthus, cream double carnations, orchids and beautiful cream roses with a hint of pink in the centre. Another incorporated reds and oranges with gerbera and a single protea flower. Her final arrangement consisted of deep yellow roses, orchids and alstroemeria in addition to interesting foliage. This was accompanied by two additional complementary arrangements. Pauline’s evening left members feeling they had been encouraged to venture further and they had learned tips from a real professional. All raffle prize winners were delighted and Pauline even produced an extra prize with a bunch of leftovers! The next meeting on Monday, 8th May will be a workshop. Toni Gravel will demonstrate first and then help us all to produce something similar. Members are asked to bring various items, a copy of which can be obtained by asking any member. Do join us at 7.30pm in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey. We can guarantee an enjoyable evening with varied refreshments and a chance to win some good raffle prizes.

News from Haxey Church of England Primary School - part of The Trentside Federation Spring has certainly sprung and we are busier than the bees here at school. Something's Cookin' Nanna cakes has almost been a permanent fixture at school, more notably supporting year 5 with their focus on South America. She has helped the class develop their experiences of food from this region. The menu reflected Argentina, Peru and Chile matching up cultural dishes the children could then cook, including 'Lime fried chicken with rice in a wrap', and 'Deluce Leche' biscuits. I'm sure there aren't many schools that have had such a diverse culinary experience! Nanna cakes has also been helping class with some Easter themed bakes - our children in FS2 enjoyed making Easter Nests that they decorated with jelly beans and mini eggs, which they popped in an Easter bag and embellished with further festive decorations. We are very lucky to have such a enthusiastic member of our community willing to give up their time to help children across the federation, so massive thanks to Nanna Cakes for all of her hard work. The Wonderful Years Photography You may have noticed the fantastic photographs that have accompanied our articles over the past few months. These have been kindly provided by Claire Thorpe of 'The Wonderful Years' photography. She has captured memories of many of our events over the last few months, including Children in Need, Haxey Hood, Where's Wally World book day and our fantastic school performances. She makes the prints available to parents and carers, and kindly donates a portion of profits to school (£18 at the last event) We would like to thank Mrs Thorpe for her professional photography, and for allowing us to reproduce them in The Arrow. PTFA News Mother's Day pop up was a raging success again, with the PTFA working tirelessly to source a selection of gifts for children to pick for that special lady in their life, display and gift wrap ready for children to take home. We hope that the recipients were happy with their children's choice! The PTFA have been selling raffle tickets at school and at the Y3 & 4 performance for Easter baskets raised a whopping £430. We hope the lucky winners enjoy their Easter themed goodies! Easter bingo was a roaring success again, massive thanks to our bingo caller, Mrs Kirwan, and her glamorous assistant Mrs Thorpe. It was yet again a popular event enjoyed by all who attended, especially the winners of the Easter egg prizes. £131.80 was raised from this event! Thanks to all who supported it. The cake raffle raised £74.50, with children buying a ticket to win a cake, this time donated by Sharon Barth, and the finale this term was the ever popular egg hunt, with a special guest appearance by the Easter bunny himself! This raised £141.50 Meet a Creature Our year 2 and FS 2 children had some interesting visitors recently, from the fantastic team from 'Meet a Creature'. The children met some very different animals and had chance to touch and handle them, including snakes, lizards and rodents! The children loved this visit, and one creature decided to make a home on our executive head teacher's head!! Comic Relief As part of our Christian Values our school consider those less fortunate than ourselves, and as part of Comic Relief, children paid £1 to wear something red for the day. Along with this and the sale of red noses we raised a massive £256.45!! £45.70 of this amount was raised via the sale of loom band rings and bracelets, lovingly made by Lola (year 4) and Lilly (year 3), who deserve a special mention, well done girls! Easter service On Monday 3rd April the wonderful St Nicholas Church welcomed children, teachers, staff and parents for our annual Easter service. Each year group performed a song, poem, reading or hymn with an Easter theme. Our children in FS 2 enjoyed their first Easter service with a rendition of 'Hot Cross Buns'. Well done to all our performance, and to those parents and carers who came to watch the children, and also to Rev. Green.
