Welcome to the May issue of the Arrow!

I would like to say ‘Spring has Sprung, but has it really?’ Middle of April and its still cold, but on a more positive note the nights are getting lighter and hopefully May will bring a heat wave! Great to see more community news this month! We would like to wish local talent, Leah all the best for her acting career. Lets hope she follows in the footsteps of another local girl Sheridan Smith. Dreams can come true if we work hard enough and have the right focus.

This month we have a change from the usual police report. We have news of ‘My Community Alert’. More details are on page 8, with dates for surgeries too. Also make a date in your diary for Rescue Day 2018. This year they are celebrating their 10th anniversary. I actually cant believe it was 10 years ago when I made my first visit! A great day out for all the family. Please note the deadline for the June issue is Friday 11th May for distribution by the 1st June. If you are interested in advertising or simply emailing me some community news, please be in touch before the date.

Community News Another Successful Concert by Joint Isle Choirs The Isle Choral Singers, with guest choir Take Note had a very successful concert held in St Nicholas Parish Church, Haxey on 25th March 2018. The first half of the concert was by the Isle Choral Singers with a very moving performance of Gabriel Faure’s Requiem. A short break followed, during which the winners of the grocery hampers and other raffle prizes were announced and the two choirs changed over for the performance by Take Note Community Choir, which showed a total contrast in the style of singing, with one complimenting the other. Finally to end the evening, joint numbers by the choirs began with the arrangement by Musical Director, Robert Fields, of “Pie Jesus” followed by Bette Middler’s “The Rose” and concluded on a high note with an enthusiastic rendition of “The Dixieland Sound”. The two Musical Directors conducted their own choirs sharing as necessary with the combined singing. The whole evening was a tremendous success for both choirs and audience, with proceedings being divided for their choir funds. The Isle Choral Singers are looking forward to a busy year and rehearsals are now underway for forthcoming events. This year we will be involved in Epworth Music Day on 23rd June, and the following day, Sunday, 24th June at 3.00 pm we will join with the Albany First Methodist Church from Oregon, USA for a concert in St Andrew’s Parish Church, Epworth, when all are welcome to what will be an uplifting concert. More details will be given when these become available. Our Summer concert will be in St Andrew’s Parish Church on 15th July, when we always plan for music to suit a Summer Evening. More details and tickets will be available nearer the time. For anyone interested in finding out more about the Isle Choral Singers please check us out on facebook, website or telephone enquiries to Concert Secretary, Helen Warnes, on 01427 871485. Rehearsals are held every Monday from 7.00 pm in the Imperial Hall, Epworth.

Welcome to spring at Epworth Old Rectory With all our new arrivals I think we can say Spring really has arrived. Last week we had 15 new lambs in the croft with one ewe having triplets, and I'm fairly certain that there are even more this week, if only they would stand still long enough to be counted. We also have two new arrivals among our volunteers so a big warm welcome to Jo and Jami. Jo is helping in our gift shop and is settling in well - a good addition to our volunteers’ staff. Jami is helping out with the guiding and will be utilising his IT skills to help Gillian, our manager, in all kinds of ways. If there is anyone else out there who has half a day each week to spare and would like to join our happy band of volunteers please contact us - we'd love to meet you. Call Gill on 01427 872268, or call in any time we're open. Our new exhibition for this year is now up and running too. It has been curated and organised by one of our youngest volunteers, Amy Wilkinson, and is called Over the Rainbow. It's a continuation of our Methodist Women's exhibitions and shows how the women's network groups in the UK offered support to the women's Black Sash group in South Africa during their campaign to have Apartheid banished. Do come and share your stories with us if you were involved in the campaign in 1980 - we'd like to hear your story, and if you wrote it down add it to the archive. Our first big event of the season is almost upon us - our Spring Country Fair which we did for the first time last year. Gillian describes it as a mini festival of the plough, only without the ploughing. There will be all kinds of entertainments, craft stalls and community information stalls. It's a day for all the family to come along and enjoy. All we need is good weather - and lots of you coming to make it a truly spectacular day again. Sadly we have had to say a farewell to our previous press officer, Eddie Mardell, who passed away recently. Big boots to fill, but I will do my best to come close to doing so. Keep your eyes on the Rectory facebook page for information on when you will be able to tune in to an hour long programme on Sinefm - 102.6 on your dial all about the Rectory and share our choice of music. The volunteers will have chosen all the tracks that will be played on the day, my suggestion being Eva Cassidy singing Over the Rainbow to tie in with our Over the Rainbow exhibition. Gillian is also doing an interview on BBC radio Humberside on May 9th about her life as a museum curator. I hope our links with both radio stations will continue and prove to be fruitful I wish a happymention spring and look forward to meeting many of you at the country Fair - find me on The Old 18 you allPlease “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements Rectory stall somewhere in the middle of the croft and say hello.

Epworth and district Flower Club April 2018 The April meeting was a demonstration by three members of the group but this was preceded by a little routine business. First several new members and visitors were welcomed. Than an agenda item was the selection of a charity to support for the year. Votes were taken for four charities and the Alzheimer’s Society won. Marian, a past chairman began the demonstrations. She arranged a “scene”. She reminded us how oasis has become non-p.c. because of its detrimental effects on the environment and she also read from a book from about 40 years ago, of the introduction of the wonderful new plastic foam material! So oasis has had a relatively short life. Marian showed the group several pin-holders which were used prior to oasis and proceeded to use one to hold tall, attractive, red acer maple twigs. Then she inserted 5 tall blue iris and some very prettily shaded orange and pink tulips before adding foliage for the lower part of the arrangement. Marian then created a similar arrangement which she placed adjacent to the first, in a kidney shaped container into which she poured water and commented how oasis had avoided the need for this. Marian’s demonstration did not end there. She placed two imitation mushrooms onto another pinholder and added a ranunculus plant and a beautiful yellow primula, a rabbit plant holder and completed her “scene” with a large piece of rough bark. This demonstration was warmly appreciated. Carolyn took her turn next. She demonstrated a skill she has learnt of creating a stained glass window effect using 6 tall pussy willow twigs which she bent and tied. To this framework she added 7 large yellow gerbera which had been wired and all that was then needed was some foliage at the base. A very pleasing effect. Next she created a more traditional arrangement using an urn into which she placed her foliage. She chose rhubus, euonymus, bay and hellebore which gave a good green base for her flowers which were pink tulips. Small pink flowers, the name of which no-ne knew and green snowball viburnum added texture and completed the arrangement. Our current chairman, Anne, demonstrated two further arrangements. Her first arrangement did use oasis about which she apologised! Anne had fastened a block of the aforementioned material into a deep wooden basket. Then she used ruscus which she cut and inserted the leafy stem at one side and the bare stem at the other. She continued this way and added 10 beautiful peachy pink roses and a little alstroemeria of the same tones. The stalks were then inserted as before and an imaginative basket of flowers effect was so simply created. Anne’s second arrangement was yet a different shape, perhaps a traditional triangle. She began with tall pussy willow and more ruscus but filled her base area with looped aspidistra leaves. Her flowers this time were wonderful green Anastasia chrysanthemums, some green pompom chrysanths and finally a large stalk of orchids! Quite a wow factor. Another member of the club then spoke with much feeling about her tribute to her father at his funeral. She described how she had incorporated so many natural materials to add to flowers to represent aspects of his life and character. Her intention was to express how much she had learned and been given confidence to create something very fitting from being part of the Flower Club. After this it was difficult to give a vote of thanks but nevertheless all the demonstrators were thanked and there was a very happy buzz as the raffle was drawn and refreshments were enjoyed. There was a very general concensus that much can be learned from watching our own members demonstrate. The May meeting will be a demonstration by Judy Cripps an Area Demonstrator. Her theme will be “Passionate about Plants”. It will begin at 7.30pm and will be in the Stephen Jones Community hall in Haxey. Do come and join us … Monday, May 14th

Planning is well underway for Rescue Day 2018 After the huge success of Rescue Day 2017, helped along by wall to wall sunshine, planning is in full swing for this year’s event. The members of the committee and organising team are already hard at work preparing what promises to be yet another fantastic day for all the family to enjoy, in what is the 10 th year anniversary of the event. Rescue Day 2018 will be held on Saturday 7th July at 7 Lakes Country Park in Crowle, North Lincolnshire. The event, which first started in 2008, showcases the excellent work that our 999 and rescue services do and allows for the general public to engage with the staff and volunteers who serve and protect us around the clock. It is the biggest of its kind in the country and attracts crowds in the thousands. Last July’s sun baked day, which is hosted annually in the idyllic water and woodland setting of 7 Lakes Country Park, was a huge hit with record crowds attending and visitors flocking from across the country. The day is organised by a team comprising of frontline Fire, Ambulance and Police staff from across the North Lincolnshire area and beyond who volunteer their time to run the event. Chris Long, Joint Event Director said: “Rescue Day 2017 was another huge success and we’d like to thank all the organising team, the organisations that take part, sponsor and support the event, our hosts 7 Lakes Country Park, and of course all the members of the public who come along and enjoy the day.” Chris went onto say: “Last year saw a magnificent amount of support for our emergency services on the day which was really great to see. We were delighted with the great feedback we have received across social media and it underlines to us that Rescue Day is a true family event.” The purpose of Rescue Day is to bring together as many rescue services as possible in one place to demonstrate what they do and how they do it. Raising public awareness on safety issues such as the dangers of open waters, road safety, fire prevention, drink and drug driving plus general community safety issues combined with an interesting yet fun day out is the continuing aim of Rescue Day. Visitors always have the opportunity to publicly engage with their Police, Fire, Ambulance, Air Ambulance, Search and Rescue, Coastguard, Water Rescue and other service staff and volunteers.

7 Lakes will become a hive of activity on 7th July with a huge range of emergency related vehicles on display, with many of the favourite attractions including live action demonstrations that include extremely life like incidents including road, train, water and aviation incidents to name but a few, as well as the headline grabbing Red Devils Parachute Display Team. Organisations including Humberside Fire & Rescue Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service, Humberside Police, Highways Agency, St John Ambulance, Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, 7 Lakes Country Park, Network Rail, VolkerRail, Gallowswood Recovery and many more come together on Rescue Day to support this enjoyable and informative annual event. Chris said: “As always they’ll be lots to see and do, and it really is a day that all the family can enjoy, children and adults alike. We hope those that have been to Rescue Day before will come along again this year to celebrate our 10th year anniversary, and those that haven’t been before will come and experience this unique and exciting event.” More details can be found at www.rescueday999.com or on social media Twitter: @Rescue_Day and www.facebook.com/rescudedayuk.
