Welcome to the May issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow! Lots going on in the local community this year, I do hope you have some time to see what the local villages have to offer over the next few months, The Old Rectory in Epworth always has some fascinating events scheduled. There is a flower festival with a twist at the end of May. For full details see page 27. I had the honour of meeting Gillian and some of the staff at the Old Rectory last month, and I must say what a wonderful job they all do. If you have never visited the Rectory, make sure to put it on your list this Summer, you wont be disappointed. Of course July brings the annual RESCUE DAY, an event not to missed. The date for your diary this year is Saturday 13th July. If you haven't managed to attend, make sure this year is the year you go. Enjoy the read and please note the deadline for the June issue is Friday 10th May for distribution by Friday 31st May. If you are interested in advertising or simply emailing me some community news, please be in touch before the date.

Forrest is a very friendly, affectionate dog who loves a tummy rub, and is quite bouncy and playful. He is good with other dogs, but not cats, and would be fine with older kids. He would make a great pet for an older active person or a family who enjoy going for walks and playing ball games. Forrest is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. Community News Haxey Methodist Church hold a Coffee morning on the first Saturday of every month and the next
Carrside playing field, Belton was purchased in 1981 as an extension of Epworth War memorial field.
is on Saturday, 2nd March from 1.00 a.m. to 12 noon Iin Stephen Jones Community Hall Coffee and biscuits are £1.50 and there is a raffle, Pre-loved books and a cake stall.
This allowed local sports clubs, such as football, hockey and cricket to have a purpose built ground for their teams. This is completely maintained by volunteers wanting to provide something for the community. Sadly due to lack of interest and the final football team folded last year the field is no longer in use. We keep the field maintained in the hope that we can encourage new use in the future. If anyone is thinking of setting up any sports club and is in need of a venue please get in touch with either Tony - 07971914352 or Gillian - 07711880863

Are you interested in getting more involved in your local community? Haxey Memorial Hall is at the centre of the village, is used by many groups and is run by volunteers. We usually meet on the first Thursday every other month for about an hour and a half and our meetings are fairly informal! We would really welcome some new faces to our team so if you have a little time to spare and are interested in joining us or, in the first instance, finding out what we do then please come along to our A.G.M. at 7 o’clock in the Hood Room at the Hall on Thursday 2rd May.
Haxey Happy Circle We are a friendly social group of over 60’s who meet each week in the Haxey Memorial Hall with car parking and easy access. The club enjoys bingo, raffles, games, tea/coffee and biscuits or just the chance to have a chat. We also have occasional trips and meal outings throughout the year. Come along and meet us every Thursday, 2pm to 4pm.

A VIP week at Epworth Old Rectory Tuesday the 26th of March saw the arrival at The Old Rectory in Epworth of the Youth President of the Methodist Church in Britain, Miss jasmine Yeboah, who was shown round the Rectory by Ms Gillian Crawley, the curator and manager. Jasmine was in Epworth to help publicise the launch of a new book, "From a Mother's Pen," a collection of prayers and writings by Susanna Wesley edited by Charles Wallace. The book will be released at the beginning of May. Jasmine told me that her presidency is for a period of one year and her role is to be the voice of the young people within the Methodist church. She attends annual events such as conference and Council meetings, and visits the sites such as the rectory as well as visiting church groups all over the country. She has taken Courage as her theme for the year. She explained that this was not just about being brave in difficult circumstances, but in helping to build confidence in, and empowering them to express their Christian beliefs. As she so succinctly put it, "being Courageous in, and for, Christ." Wednesday the 27th of march was even busier with a host of national and international trustees of the Rectory arriving for the dedication of the newly decorated room in the Rectory, based on the life of Susanna Wesley and her family here in Epworth. Jon Byers, one of the American Trustees led the dedication service asking for blessings on the work done at the Rectory, and the volunteers who work there, which was followed up with one of Susanna's own prayers in which she says that religion is not to be confined to church alone but should continue into one's whole life. Also present were Bishop Ivan Abrahams, General Secretary of the World Methodist Council, and Sarah Friswell, the Chair of the Rectory Trustees along with around 16 other trustees. All who were there admired the new decor and the way the artefacts were displayed to show episodes in Susanna's life. This was a very good day for special visitors as the Lincoln Diocesan Pilgrims came to us at lunch time while the trustees were still holding their meeting. The Pilgrims had a look at the newly dedicated room and heard a little talk on the contents then adjourned down stairs to Susanna's kitchen where they were regaled with the story of how she educated her children in that very room, and led the way for women lay preachers by preaching sermons and bible study to approximately two hundred people from her kitchen, despite the rules that women were not allowed to preach nor should it be done anywhere other than in church. These two days took us from the early eighteenth century up to today with a continuing link from one highly educated, spiritual, strong willed woman, Susanna, to her modern counterparts with Jasmine, our trustees and manager to the women of the Pilgrim group, of whom at least two were ordained vicars.
