Welcome to the May issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow. At last we can meet up outside with our friends and family once again! We can go shopping, have our hair cut and have a drink in a beer garden. Community groups which have been unable to meet throughout last year are at last making plans for reopening with hopefully everyone back to normal by September 2021. Whilst events are still cancelled during the Summer months we have good news, The Auckley show is actively making plans for their yearly event to go ahead. Full details are on pages 18 and 19. Not far from the Isle please support the show. Sadly the Epworth music day will not be going ahead, but there are more than 40 sets of performers already recording their music to upload on to YouTube. Surely this is a must to sample the local talent. All details are on page 4. Keep your events and community group information coming through. It will be good to see our lives getting back to some sort of normality.

Owston Ferry Smithy & Heritage Centre update: we hope to open the Museum once Government regulations allow. This will be Sunday May 23rd at the earliest. Owston Ferry Society AGM will take place once larger indoor gatherings are allowed. Please check our facebook page and local posters for updates.
Like all other societies, the Flower Club has been unable to meet for over a year. However, members have not been forgotten and this week they each took delivery of a pot containing Tete a Tete bulbs, this month’s nominated “Flower of Hope”, as a good wish for Easter. During the year other gifts have been a pretty selection of English flowers from The Spotted Dog Flower Co., everything needed for a Christmas arrangement with instruction and photographs instead of the anticipated workshop and a beautiful Jonathan Moseley calendar. The photographs of Jonathan’s flowers and his arrangements are wonderful and will continue to cheer everyone’s spirits throughout the year. The Club is hoping a summer, outdoor meeting may be possible within Government Guidelines. Thereafter future meetings, again within the Guidelines, may be possible but unfortunately currently nothing can be booked. However, as always, the Club remains positive, and we shall look forward to somehow celebrating 60 years of the Flower Club’s existence and welcoming new members.

The 2020 winner in the Active Waterways category by Nigel Essery, taken on the Grand Union Canal, is pictured. Photography competition category winners will receive £25 to spend in the IWA's online shop, plus IWA goodies. The overall winner will also receive a print of their photo. Epworth Music Day 2021 – the Online Show This year, Epworth Music Day falls on Saturday 19th June. Director, Peter Barnard said: ‘Although the Covid statistics are increasingly promising, sadly it’ll still be too early by June to run the music day in the normal way, and with the amount of forward planning and organisation required, it’s also not possible to push it back to a date later this year. We hope to be able to run it outdoors in June 2022! Meanwhile, we have some 40 sets of local performers who are gearing themselves in a recording booth somewhere nearby to record music and song to entertain us via our YouTube channel. We will be introducing all these performers at a rate of one a day from later in April all the way up to 19th June. This will give us all a chance to sample what is being offered, and allow us to focus our choice of what to listen to on the day. Or maybe, you’ll want to listen to it all? With 40 performers each providing about 20-30 minutes of music, we will be bringing you some show online. If you miss any of the performers when they are profiled in this way, the videos will remain on the channel for us to listen to at our leisure. As in the normal event, all this is free! After all, this allows us a chance to sample music and songs from a wide range of musical genres’. The YouTube link is: https://www.youtube.com/channel/ UCVrUnk8GtvD21gX3SBR0eZA

MISTERTON HISTORY: WALK & TALK WITH BASSETLAW HISTORIAN Misterton will be the focus when Bassetlaw historian, Adrian Gray, leads his next ‘walk and talk’ on Saturdays 5 and 12 June. He will start at Misterton Parish Church then take in the Soss (from the Dutch for sluice – the pump house is pictured), searching out the ‘tunnel drain’ and the lost chapel. He also has information on some famous Misterton characters. The walking distance is around 3½ miles with some uneven ground. His company is a tourist organisation approved to take more than six people, but numbers will be limited to 20. To book, go to talksandtours@gmail.com or call Maggy on 07950 167 821. The cost is £7.50, which includes a contribution to the Parish Church.

FAMILIES COLLABORATE ON CHRISTMAS ADVENTURE BOOK Since his wife, Jade, died in 2018 after the birth of their son, Hugo, Ric Hart took to writing to help come to terms with his loss, and to give Hugo a lasting legacy of his mother. He wrote a book for children about bereavement, Hugo and Daddy’s Night-time Adventures, then an autobiography, Pupy Love. Two more children’s books are in the pipeline: Hugo and Daddy’s Thailand Adventures and Hugo and Daddy’s Superhero Adventures – part of the Hugo and Daddy’s suite of books. But now, with a new lady in his life, Victoria, and her three sons, the two families are jointly working on the next book, Hugo and Daddy’s Christmas Adventures. The three boys are helping to illustrate the new book: they are pictured (from left) Harry, George, and Charlie with their initial designs. Ric gives a peep inside the cover of the book, which will be out in time for Christmas: “It will tell the story of Hugo going on an adventure with Santa at night and visiting the North Pole. I am hoping this provides an opportunity for the boys and gives them the confidence that anything is possible in life going forward. They are all great readers, so they are finding the writing of the book, and illustrating it fascinating.” Ric is pictured with his autobiography, which was published in February.

Saturday 21st August 2021 The Committee have taken the decision to continue planning for the Auckley Show to take place on Saturday 21st August 2021. This may change subject to further advice from Government or circumstances are such that the show would put members of our community at risk. We are well organised.
WE WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN
www.auckleyshow.co.uk 18
Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements
Traders attending the show Please be assured that if you have booked, or intend to book, a pitch to trade and the Show is cancelled the committee will either:1. Refund your booking fee in full. OR 2. Roll your booking over for next year’s show, with a guarantee of no pitch fee increases. Sponsors and financial supporters We have always enjoyed exceptional support from our local businesses and residents. Every donation, however small, has always made a difference and this year is no exception. In fact, this year we need financial support more than ever because we will be putting extra measures in place to ensure everyone’s safety A community event, like ours, is something that everyone can look forward to. It’s free to get in and free to enter the produce competitions so every person, every child, can feel part of our great community. A winner’s rosette always brings a smile and for some people that feeling will be even more special after months of restrictions. However small your donation or sponsorship, the community will be very grateful. We’re eager to hear from anyone who is in a position to donate. There are many sponsorship opportunities for those needing local exposure so please, if you can afford to, help a community pull together and put some rosette smiles back on some local faces. Another Way to support us As I am sure you are aware for the last 37 years we have balanced our books to provide one of the biggest and best FREE family days out. That is still our aim!!The Auckley Show monthly draw is suffering under the current circumstances as we can’t get out to collect your annual contribution. We will continue with the draw and pay out our £100 prize each month. Could I ask current members to consider renewing their number by visiting our web site (auckleyshow.co.uk) and pay on line? I am also willing to take telephone payment pledges at this time on 770818. Or, you could put £10 in an envelope, with your name and address and an email or telephone number, through my letterbox at 23 Ellers Lane Auckley DN93HY....part of your daily exercise perhaps!! If you would like to join the draw as a new member do the same. £10 gets 12 months entry into the draw and winners will be published on our website and in the Arrow Magazine. You don’t have to live in Auckley to visit or support our show. Tombola Due to the current situation we have taken the decision not to go ahead with the Tombola for 2021. As you know we get many donations for this fundraiser. This will leave a big hole in the finances. If you could consider donating in other ways for 2021 it would be appreciated. Evenings at the Show We have had a number of enquiries regarding our Friday and Saturday night events. The Friday Family Disco will continue as normal 6pm to 9pm. The Saturday night will continue to be adults only and tickets £5 each are on sale now, with options to book a table of 8 to ten. Reserve tickets on line at www.auckleyshow.co.uk or give me a call 07799 761006. We intend to celebrate with the biggest party ever in a 140’ x 50’ marquee. We have a four piece German Oompah band ’The Bierkeller Schunklers’, supported by Martin Kaye ‘Party Zone’ disco 7pm to 11.30pm to create the perfect party atmosphere. Keep safe and look out for further updates, on Facebook (search @theAuckleyShow ) and at www.auckleyshow.co.uk

Bransby Horses is delighted to announce that on Monday 12th April, following the government’s planned easing of the nationwide lockdown, they plan to reopen to the public at 10am. The charity will welcome visitors for a full seven days in the week commencing 12th April, reverting to opening times of Wednesday to Sunday, 10am – 4pm from 19th April. Based just a few miles north of Lincoln, Bransby Horses normally welcomes thousands of visitors each year. Following three months of closure due to COVID-19, the charity and their horses, ponies, donkeys and mules, very much look forward to welcoming visitors back and seeing their award-winning Visitor Centre bustling again. Jo Snell, Bransby Horses CEO, said: “I would like to take a moment to thank everyone in the Bransby family for their support, adaptability and resilience over the last 12 months. Our supporters and teams have been fantastic and we simply couldn’t have continued with our vital rescue and welfare work during the pandemic without them. “We all cannot wait to welcome visitors back and see new and regular faces saying a much-missed ‘hello’ to our rescue residents. We’re busy getting ready for the reopening, with lots of grooming and clipping to make sure our equines are looking their best in readiness for our visitors. “There will be plenty for friends and families to see and do when they arrive, including our brand new play park which now caters for children of all ages, with a dedicated toddler area, new slides, swings and climbing frames.”

The charity is also pleased to offer a Click and Collect service across both the Café and Gift Shop from their reopening date, allowing you to preorder food and grab a bargain or two, all the while helping to ensure their rescue and welfare work will continue in the future. The charity continues to monitor the latest government guidance and has implemented safe and effective ways to resume its onsite services and activities, certified “We’re Good to Go” by Visit Britain to ensure visitors have a safe and enjoyable time. The new Click and Collect Café service and outside Café takeaway kiosk* will all help support the extra social distancing measures that have been put in place. Although the petting of animals and some areas are still restricted, visitors can still watch from a distance whilst taking part in activities and enjoying the brand new and improved play park.

Haxey Parish Council Newsletter – April 2021
Parish Clerk - Deb Hotson Email: haxeypc@live.co.uk Postal Address: The Foreman Carter Centre, Westwoodside Playing Field, Westwoodside, DN9 2DX Telephone: 01427 752228 / 0784 220 1877 Website: www.haxeyparish.org.uk Precept 2021/22 From North Lincolnshire Council – “We have received several queries in respect of the band D rate information for parish and town councils that appears on the council tax bill and want to take this opportunity to provide clarity. This specifically relates to the group of parish and town councils that decided to freeze their total precept requirement at 2020/21 levels, but where the band D rate has increased. This is solely due to a reduction in the taxbase for those areas in 2021/22, which reflects the temporary change in circumstances and different taxbase setting assumptions brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. The total precept requirement is derived based on two variables: Band D rate Band D taxbase Some parish and town councils prefer to focus on the total precept needed, but for the reasons set out above there could be an impact on the band D rate and as such it would be advantageous to reflect the impact to the band D rate in precept setting discussions. There are 24 parish and town councils, one of which is Haxey which have held the total precept at 2020/21 levels but have seen the band D rate increase because the taxbase for their area has reduced and we have been contacted by a few. There is a table appended at the bottom of this email which lists those parish and town council areas that have frozen their total precept but seen an increase in their band D rate. In previous years, where taxbase growth has been the consistent norm, the opposite to this scenario has applied for some where they have decided to freeze their total precept, but this has resulted in a reduced band D because the precept is spread over a larger taxbase. And this could well be the case next year if the taxbase returns to trend growth and parish and town areas maintain the same total precept. I hope this helps you to better understand why the band D rate has changed in some instances despite an unchanged total precept. For 2022/23, we will look to provide a calculator tool to assist parish and town councils in their council tax setting decisions”.
Handyman The Parish Council are looking for interested parties to contact the Clerk with regard to the potential position of a handyman to include various tasks round the parish including litter picking of open space areas and the playing field. Hours and salary to be discussed. Please contact the Clerk to register your interest.

What great news we had from the Government allowing our non essential shops, gyms, pubs and restaurants to open! This has to be a step in the right direction and I hope we all treat it with the respect it deserves for us to stay this way and progress further into what our lifestyles used to be like. We are still waiting on the official news regarding ‘overseas’ travel and I don't think we will get a detailed plan until the week before 17th May 2021, but we should be able to have movement to some countries (to be advised) for our summer and beyond. Yes, it is highly likely that Covid19 PCR testing will be needed and companies are reducing the cost of this, one company has already reported a cost of around £60 per person (we are not sure on the status of testing children yet), so all good news in the right direction. If you don’t fancy overseas then cruise companies now have ‘staycations’ sailing around the British Isles, why not give this a go? And of course there are plenty of UK resorts, lodges, holiday cottages, hotel and boating adventures to keep us all happy. Please book with an agent, like me, who only offer Tour Operators with ABTA cover and ATOL bonding and then, if your holiday cannot go ahead due to FDCO advice, you WILL be offered a full refund or amend to another date. Let’s remain positive for our future and do book ahead and plan your holidays for 2022/2023 (if you don’t fancy travel this year). The Travel Industry has had a hard time too with no or little movement in 2020 and into 2021 and we really could do with future bookings to keep the wheels turning, both in the UK (shops, airports, airline jobs) and all those lovely tourist destinations you love overseas (hotels, bars, restaurants, tourist attractions) the whole industry needs YOUR bookings. Please do head to my Facebook page www.facebook.com/luanthornhillathaystravel and give it a like and follow. I have plenty of holidays on my page for inspiration and do or get in touch with me and I can put something together for you. Stay Safe
