With less than 2 months to go before this year’s Music Day, we’re putting the final pieces together for another great day of celebrating live music. In the daytime there’ll be over 90 hours of free music from 10am to 5pm in 14 venues around Epworth, featuring nearly 60 different
groups and performers of all types of music. All this is free; no tickets are needed.

As well as the daytime programme, The Queen’s Head, The White Bear, The Old School Inn, Koko’s and Hatty’s will be putting on their own music in the evening, and this will round off a fabulous day’s music and entertainment.
At 7pm there will also be a concert with 6 different groups – again of all types of music –performing in St Andrew’s Church – and the Folk Dance group of the Yorkshire Camping and Caravanning Club will be putting on a ceilidh in the Imperial Hall, starting at 7.30pm.

I attended the first of these events on Wednesday 20th March when we enjoyed a selection of soups and sandwiches followed by tea or coffee. We got to know a little more about the two ladies who are organising the ‘KITCHEN’ on the first and Third Wednesdays of each month in Haxey Church Hall 12.30 – 2.30 p.m. (charge £5.00). Cherie and Jacqui want to provide a meeting place for ‘oldies’, like myself who value the chance to meet with others over a light meal. It would be helpful if you will book ahead contacting Jacqui on 07923830482 or Cherie on 07970336137. It may be possible to arrange a lift if you need one.
I attended the second ‘KITCHEN’ on April 3rd Word had got about and a few more people were there; please join us for some fellowship. Well done Jacqui and Cherie for providing this community venture.

Orchard House was built in about the 1860s and has been developed gradually into its outbuildings, to extend the number of rooms. There is a substantial sustainably maintained garden. It is in a quiet area of Crowle.
The house comprises a farmhouse kitchen with gas fired Rayburn for central heating and water, and a large living room with a brick built fireplace with York stone hearth and multi fuel stove, with a main bedroom and two adjoining bedrooms, and bathroom, upstairs.
Outside are a room presently used as an office but which could serve as a flat or garden room, greenhouse, two brick built stores, and storage sheds. The garden includes mature fruit trees, soft fruit, herbaceous borders, raised beds, a small pond, and a wildlife area. There is car parking at the edge of the garden.

Here we are, well into Spring and we hope by the time you read this that warm sunshine is the norm after what seems like months of rain!
We are delighted to say we have donated half the cost of a Nasendoscopy system (£35,000) to Doncaster Royal Infirmary, with DRI paying the remainder. This system will support their Speech and Language therapists in undertaking examination of the nose, throat and voice box and is a test that is used to identify cancers and support patients who have had cancer.
We have been very fortunate in receiving money from two recent wills. We are in talks with DRI as to other equipment they need and we will bring you news of this hopefully next month.
In the meantime we are very grateful to all our fundraisers who do a tremendous job in raising money on our behalf. Some of you do energetic sports for sponsorship, others take a more leisurely approach. Whatever you do on our behalf we are really grateful. If you could send us a photograph with a short write-up we will do our best to include it on our website.
Our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), first floor (lift available), Room 104. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone in advance if you are thinking of coming to see us.
Our charity believes local money should help local people. All money raised goes towards equipment for our local hospitals. None of our staff are paid, we are all volunteers.

Early days in the Isle has given me wonderful memories!
I was sponsored by Mr Keall’s farm at Haxey Carr where I also lived for a while at the piggery. Sadly the piggery is no longer there (Starr Carr Farm). I am from Grimsby, but I always class the Isle of Axholme as my second home. Here are some of my memories, I hope you enjoy!
Mr. Brian Maxfield and myself at The Epworth Show.
Centre photo: my old "boss " Mr. A Keall who owned a farm down Haxey Carr. The gentleman on the right is Mr. Clive Glew in the back garden of 20 Mowbray Street Epworth the home of Mr and Mrs Stanley where I lodged. How I remember the Sunday dinners starting with a large Yorkshire pudding filled with thick gravy, also not forgetting our beer from the Mowbray Arms across the street which I believe is now a Co-op.
Bottom Left photo shows three ladies who worked on Mr. Keall's farm sat on his lorry, on the left Mrs. Mary Maxfield of Mowbray Street, Mrs. Carson who lived down Haxey Carr and Mrs Coggon of Epworth "not sure if I've spelt her name correctly!
Centre photo is Mr. Clive Glew with his son Adrian on Church Walk, Epworth. The last photo shows my old Forman Mr. Towns of Haxey Carr, he was 70 + years and had never been to the seaside!!!!!
Brave Scouts and cubs have been camping! The cubs first overnight camps of the year was in tents but indoors at West Butterwick Village Hall. Impressively, every single cub came to camp which is brilliant and helps them to gel as a wolf pack. They did brilliantly, putting up tents and organising their camp area, including tent inspection. They played lots of games and completed their entertainer badges in the evening, plus having supper! One favourite game is hunting of one of the leaders in the dark – they have to be VERY quiet and try to get to him. But, if he hears them he shines a torch on them, and they are OUT. In the morning they broke camp, tidied up and had breakfast. An excellent introduction to camping away from home, and skills needed for the big joint section summer camp in July.
The scouts camp was at Summerbridge Church Hall, Nidderdale and equally full-on! On Saturday they all hiked up to Brimham Rocks, on the way practicing mapwork and compass navigation skills. After lunch we had the infamous hide and seek, sardines and tag games in a boulder strewn clearing. Excellent teamwork in the evening cooking a 2-course meal, catering to preferences and allergies alike. Plus, loads of games in the evening, including ball games and developing our ninja sneaking skills in the darkened Church! On the Sunday we went to a centre who taught us axe throwing, and then laser quest in the woods, followed by a picnic. We then went to the newly renovated Nidderdale Leisure Centre for their afternoon inflatables swimming session.
Scouts have completed their 4-week film-making training by students from Lincoln University, and gained their photography badges. We enjoyed a viewing of all the finished projects and a graduation ceremony with awarding of certificates. It has been brilliant to have such a knowledgeable team and an opportunity like this to offer the scouts!
After the Easter holidays our silver DofE scouts will begin their expedition phase with a 3 day trek near Buxton. And then we are all taking part in CPR and first aid training, to gain our junior lifesaving qualification and first aid scout badge.
Beavers section will soon restart - please get in touch if your child (aged 5-8 years) would like to join us this Term.
Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) meeting on Monday evenings 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts & Senior Scouts), and Beavers (tbc) probably on a Tuesday evening at 6pm (from September).

We are a small, friendly and active club, founded in the 1930's. Our playing season is from 1st May to 30th August approximately.
Our activities vary from league matches, internal competitions and friendly matches. We enjoy some very good fun days with our members, which are held on a monthly basis. Also, we meet up socially at the clubhouse every month during the winter for fun-filled afternoons.
Bowling is not just for the elderly and we would like to welcome and encourage new members to join us, male and female, all age groups (children from age 12 yrs.). Our weekly roll-ups, which are on a Sunday afternoon, are well supported. People walking by will often stop to watch and have a chat, then end up joining our club.
This is a good opportunity to learn a new sport, make new friends, to exercise according to your own ability, all at a very reasonable cost. Social membership is also available if you prefer not to play, but would like to be part of our club. Why not come and have a go, you will be made very welcome and bowls are available to borrow initially.
Annual membership £35, Social membership £15.
Contact Anne or Fran who will be pleased to give you any further information you require.

Anne Everatt, the chairperson, welcomed members to the April meeting on Monday, 8th April. She informed everyone of a letter of thanks from Lindsey Lodge Hospice following the donation of £1000. The club had presented a cheque, which was the proceeds of the Open Meeting in November, at the March meeting. Anne went on to report that there was a programme change for May as the demonstrator booked had had an accident. Instead the club will have a Supermarket Challenge which is created by 4 (lottery selected) volunteers buying supermarket flowers and other volunteers demonstrating an arrangement with them. These have been enjoyable and successful evenings in the past.
Anne then introduced the speaker for the evening, Sue, who represented “Pollen” which she informed us is a retail and commercial florist-based business in Doncaster.
Sue gave us a fascinating account of how she became interested in floristry. She talked about graphic design in the retail industry and advertising and how the human eye responds to different stimuli. She mentioned how this has influenced floristry in the wider environment and how as times have changed it is no longer necessary to stick to rigid rules but to use one’s imagination and be creative.
Sue talked about the emphasis now on sustainability and the development of less packaging and the replacement of Oasis. Sue interspersed her talk with reference to door wreaths and began to show how easily they could be made. She talked of the history of them and how it is very fashionable and acceptable to have door wreaths at any time of the year. Sue demonstrated how to create a wreath using moss for a base on a copper ring and she proceeded to attach neat handfuls of evergreen foliage of great variety binding each handful tightly with florists’ wire. She completed the design with a raffia bow which enhanced the natural appearance and finally emphasised the idea of utilising what is naturally available.
Sue’s final comment was to recommend that we all should encourage the use of local shops and resources which in turn helps the sustainability of the environment
The meeting concluded with a raffle and refreshments and the opportunity to buy plants brought by members on a plant stall. This plant “Swap Shop” is always popular and provides additional financial resources as well as much amusement as individuals remember names and descriptions of how the plant looks later in the year.
The May meeting will be as mentioned, a Supermarket challenge and in June there will be a workshop given by Jo Smith, a floral designer.

ATTENDANCE Over 50 children are estimated to have taken part in the Easter egg hunt. A number of rabbits ‘escaped’ from the Library; when returned, the child was given a crème egg. Alongside this was a range of other Eastery activities, including face-painting. Many thanks to the volunteers running Misterton Library for organising this successful event, with seven new Library users recruited. Pictured are children writing about the escaped rabbits, and the winners of some of the Easter prizes.
Misterton is entering the Best-Kept Village Competition this year – so help keep Misterton tidy by removing unauthorised fly-posting. Fly-posting is unlawful. Any sign, placard, notice, leaflet, banner, or anything similar that can be seen from the highway or any public place may (with the exception of planning application notices) are classed as fly-posting. Bassetlaw District Council has a fly-posting policy and items may be removed by Council officers or the Highways Authority. A fixed penalty notice may be issued or the flyposter may be liable to prosecution.
The District Council’s fly-posting policy has been developed to support its commitment to creating decent and clean neighbourhoods and to take enforcement action against antisocial behaviour and environmental crime. Fly-posting is illegal: it is not only unsightly, but also gives an impression of neglect and can attract other forms of vandalism and anti-social behaviour leading to the decline of an area. Fly-posting creates litter, which spoils the environment; it is a form of illegal advertising that puts those who advertise legally at an unfair disadvantage. Finally, it can obscure important traffic signs or create an obstruction to pedestrians and/or motorists. A business or organisation may advertise on its own premises providing there is nothing to distract drivers.
On Thursday May 2nd we will be having a talk about the Isle of Anglesey by Eddie Gaunt. Eddie has been involved in the Lincs Wildlife Trust for many years, being chairman of the Scunthorpe Area Group and spending many hours helping on the local Wildlife Trust reserve at Messingham. He will be giving us an illustrated talk on the wildlife of Anglesey, the island off the north coast of Wales. We meet at Belton All Saints Centre (Church Hall), Stocks Hill, Belton, DN9 1PE Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a member of the Wildlife Trust so please come along and join us. Entrance fee is £1. There will be refreshments and a raffle. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Tony Lee on 01427 753831 or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. Council members had a very difficult job, finding a winning egg in each class for this year’s egg competition. The theme this year was ‘Someone who inspires me’. It was lovely to see the mums, emergency services, book and film characters amongst the inspiring people.
The Epworth Men’s Society was formed in 1950 and has had regular meetings ever since, enjoyed by an average of over 40 regular attendees.
After almost folding in the aftermath of the Covid lockdowns, the society was resurrected through the efforts of a small group of committee members, has successfully arranged full programmes for 2023 and 2024, and is now looking to recruit new members to help carry it forward into the future.
The group provides an opportunity for men to meet and share mutual interests, enhanced by a programme of interesting talks in an informal atmosphere, usually over a pint or two! Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month from October until April at 7.45 pm. usually in the upstairs meeting room at The Red Lion Epworth.
Amongst the annual regular events are a quiz night in January and an indoor games night (darts, dominos, cards) in February. Other meetings usually have a guest speaker on an interesting topic. Once or twice a year we arrange outings to local places of interest. There is also an annual dinner, again with a guest speaker.
Membership does not entail any form of commitment and subscription is only a nominal £5 per annum (you are welcome to attend a couple of meetings free while you make your mind up!)
Simply contact any one of those on the list below, who will be happy to answer any questions you have about the group or just turn up and try it for yourself.
