The Trentside Federation School News West Butterwick and St Martin’s (Owston Ferry) C of E Primary Schools Both schools rounded off their Spring Terms with Easter Services in St Mary’s and St Martin’s churches. This was a lovely way to end a very busy term within the Trentside Federation :Years 3 & 4 at West Butterwick school reached for their magnifying glasses and had their finger-printing kits at the ready, as they discovered an apparent ‘break-in’ recently. Clues led the pupils to believe that it must have been an Ancient Egyptian Mummy….. there were bandages strewn all over the classroom and more were found on the railings in the playground. The children wasted no time in collecting photographic evidence. They then interviewed Mrs Cooke in the school office, who had opened up that morning, to find out more information to further support their investigations. On completion of their investigations, the children set about writing news reports, developing their journalistic writing. The break-in has enabled the pupils to develop skills in many areas! Fortunately, nothing was stolen! Strangely, the ‘Mummy’ left behind something for the pupils … A number of ‘shabtis’. The children discovered that ‘shabtis’ were small figures placed in the tomb of an Ancient Egyptian. They are also sometimes called ‘ushabtis’ or ‘shaptis’. The Ancient Egyptians believed that the afterlife would be much like this one, so they created shabtis to serve the dead in their next life doing tasks such as irrigating the river and farming fields. The West Butterwick Infants have also been developing their investigative skills, but not linked to Ancient Egypt – they have turned their attentions to an Ant Colony that has been set up on school site. The Class 1 ‘Ant Habitat Tank’ is allowing the children in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 to discover how ants tunnel and make mazes to work and live in. Other minibeasts to be explored during the forthcoming Summer Term include the Monarch Butterfly and bees. The children are going to be learning all about the Monarch Butterfly’s migration – a unique and amazing phenomenon as it is the only butterfly known to make a two-way migration journey, as birds do. One of the great things about working in schools is that the adults learn an awful lot alongside the children! Did you know that Monarchs can travel between 50-100 miles a day?! It can take up to two months for a Monarch to complete its journey. The farthest ranging monarch butterfly recorded travelled 265 miles in one day. We will all be learning a lot this Summer Term! Chess Club is now up and running at St Martin’s school. The idea for the club came from Joss Bradley (Year 4). It is a popular club and runs on a Wednesday lunchtime. The children enjoy a range of clubs, including Street Dance, Phizzy’s Fun (sports multiskills), Baking, Art Master Classes and Tae Kwon Do. The ‘We Can Grow’ planters at St Martin’s are now yielding a fast-growing crop of garlic and carrots, so we are keeping a sharp eye on the weeds and looking forward to harvesting.

We had a scare once; we had to learn anti-tank shooting so thought that’s what we were going to do, because we knew that our gun was no use against Mark Fours. We had five men on stag (lookout) at a time, in daylight, one at night, there were times when you could not see from one end of the gun to the other, we had sun glasses for eyes, and had to cover our mouths up with. Handkerchiefs’, the storms were that bad, everything in tents were covered with sand, sometimes we had night storms, terrible, is the word for it. But the worse in the lot was when it blew hot sand; it was like hot steam. Well, I think that was the worst three months I’ve spent in my life including this P.O.W life. I was real lucky for mail. Also parcels, one had even been salvaged from the sea. One day we had a mock raid on Gambut, what a farce! Up to leaving Birhara we were with the 88th. Heavies. Well the next and last place for fighting for us was Tobruk. We arrived their May 17th. - 18th. For the first week we had no raids, the weather was lovely and there were no sandstorms and a lovely place for bathing in the harbour. We thought if this keeps up, we will be well away, it was so much healthier, and we were getting exercise through swimming, also getting rid of some sand out of our system. Joe Taylor came and did our cooking on the post, so that was better. I went up into Tobruk a few times to the canteen, and church. I don’t think there was one building that hadn’t been hit with bombs or shells. We were getting raid warnings nearly every five minutes of the day but little happened, as I said before for the first week, then one night Tobruk was the target for the night, from then onwards we had lots of them, and we began to think that Tobruk wasn’t so healthy after all. One night we had a raid, we fired 140 rounds off, I slipped and got a bad burn on my legs, and that stopped me swimming, just as I was getting to go. That just got better, and then I had a boil under my armpit, so I got no more bathing at all. When we were not raided, and we went to bed, we were attacked by fleas that were the first time in the army that I had been bothered with them, we had rats, mice, scorpions, snakes, and etc in the desert, but the fleas gave me the most trouble. To carry on - the Jerry’s didn’t bother about the barrages that was put up - he dived straight through it, what an awful noise when they dive. It seems to be over our post most times, the bombs whistling down, wondering if the next time was going to be our lot, then the bark of the gun, what a row. One night we had a scare, it came over the phone that there were 50 guns, 52 troop carriers, circling over Gaza (Gazala), so were expecting paratroops, but it didn’t come off. Well all the raids and bombs that dropped hardly any damage at all was done. I think two men were killed. One night just before the finish, about nine o clock, Jerry started shelling us, that was worse than bombs, you never know when they are coming, and we spent the rest of that night in the gun pit that was the safest place. One morning in less than three minutes ME’s brought three of Baltimore planes down, a little after brought one of our fighters down, one burst of fire, and he dived straight into the sea... Another day one of our convoys was attacked. One was sunk; we could see the Junkers diving on to them.

Spring has certainly sprung and so has the Haxey School calendar! We have been super busy at school. First of all several pupils from years 5 and 6 took part in a swimming gala held over in Scunthorpe, pictured are those who took part. Well done to all. Reverend Green invited us to church for a lovely Easter service before the holidays. Each year group took part with either a performance, song or presentation really working as a team to exhaling the Easter story. It was well attended by family and friends who enjoyed the service. During the service winners of our decorated egg competition were announced, with a winner and runner up for each class receiving an Easter egg. Congratulations to those who won a prize. Foundation stage have been studying farm animals as part of their curriculum. They were lucky enough to enjoy a visit to Coney Garth farm. To support their learning. All of the children thoroughly enjoyed meeting the animals, especially a recently born lamb. On Friday 20th March the children took to the playground to observe the recent eclipse, which was a first for some children. They observed it safely, not staring straight into the sun. Many children noticed how cold it went, how the birds stopped singing and how peaceful it was, for a moment at least! Good luck to all completing end of Key Stage tests his term, we know you have worked very hard at school and wish you all the best of luck.

HISTORY GROUP LAUNCHES APPEAL FOR REPLACEMENT MEMORIAL PLAQUE A public appeal has been launched to fund a memorial plaque, listing the names of Misterton men and women who fell in The Great War. It will be sited next to the memorial window in All Saints’ Church, Misterton. While some long-standing residents recall there being such a temporary plaque, no trace of it can be found. So members of the Misterton & West Stockwith History Group decided to launch an appeal for a new, permanent one – an oak tablet, as was the intention almost 100 years ago. The new, tablet will be erected, funds permitting, in 2018 to mark the centenary of the end of WW1. The names of donors to the plaque appeal will be remembered on a page in the Misterton Millennium Memorial Book, which is on constant display in the Parish Church. The fund was launched with the sale of DVDs of the 2014 exhibition, Lest We Forget: Misterton & West Stockwith in The Great War. The DVDs are still on sale at The Misterton Centre (minimum £5 donation each). Anyone wishing to make donations to the plaque appeal should contact the Vicar, Churchwardens, or the Parish Church’s treasurer – or leave donations in named, sealed envelopes at The Misterton Centre. For further information, contact Hazel Brand, Chair, Misterton & West Stockwith History Group, on 01427 891376.

Roundabout Technique Dear readers, It is not uncommon to come across drivers who go out of their way to avoid certain roundabouts. Even experienced drivers consider them to be “high risk” locations, and feel uncomfortable with them, no matter what size the roundabout is. The single most common mistake at a roundabout is only looking to your right as you approach, because that is where you expect traffic to come from. But what about the car ahead of you – can he see something that you can’t? It is better to gather as much information as you can – start to check to your right, straight ahead, to your left, and all your mirrors as you approach the roundabout. By carrying out your observations in this sweeping/scanning motion, you are more likely to pick up if the car in front decides not to go for some reason. The classic rear end shunt, caused by the driver ahead not going when you think he’s going, can thus be avoided. Help yourself further by keeping a good gap between you and the vehicle waiting to get on, so if he changes his mind half way you have room to stop without compromising yourself. Drivers often approach the roundabout with the plan to continue unless they have to stop because of other traffic. The problem here is that you may notice another car just as you get close to the roundabout, but you are more likely to speed up, opting to “take a chance” because it is difficult to change your mind at the last moment. A slightly different, but very much more effective mental outlook is to approach the roundabout thinkNew Car Tyres. ing, “Plan to stop but look to go”. As you scan, remember you are looking for gaps, as Puncture Repairs. well as vehicles. And once you are on the roundaWheel Balancing. Truck Tyres bout, remember not everybody will position themselves correctly to get off: you could find somebody sweeping across you to get to their exit. Remember that the lorry or bus needs lots of room, and try not to be actually alongside it. On a mini roundabout, if you are approach at the same time as an oncoming vehicle, clearly indicate your intention and then do a visual check – try to catch the driver’s eye and send a message to avoid the ambiguous situation when nobody is quite sure who should go first. This handsome boy is Scooby, a young Staffy Cross Whippet who is looking for his new home. What a fantastic little character- Scooby just loves everyone, and is always happy to see you- his whole body wags, not just his tail! He loves playing football and has lots of toys, so a fairly active home is preferred. He seems ok with most other dogs and cats. Scooby is neutered and fully vaccinated. If you are interested in meeting this lovely boy, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705
