News, News, News... Pakistan Flood Appeal Members of St. Nicholas Church Haxey and other generous sponsors have contributed over £700 for Christian Aid to help those devastated people whose homes and crops have been washed away by the floods in Pakistan, which have affected an area the size of Britain. The suffering and disease caused by the worst humanitarian disaster for years have clearly touched the hearts of many in our community. This money came from a special collection in St. Nicholas Church and also sponsoring Peter Tully in his fast throughout the hours of daylight during the Muslim Ramadan. Others who have given generous support include Isle of Axholme Lions club members, Maltings Off Road of Westwoodside and Novello Hair Design of Epworth. Many thanks to all the sponsors. Arthur Franks (Christian Aid Organiser Haxey)

News, News, News, News, News, News, News... A talk on the history and the current role of the Yeomen of the Guard – often mistakenly referred to as Beefeaters – was given to members of the Epworth Men’s Society to mark the start of the organisation’s 53rd winter programme. The talk was given at the Society‘s annual dinner, held at Belton Pavilion on Monday last week (October 4), and was attended by about 40 members and guests.
ST ANDREW‘S PARISH CHURCH, EPWORTH present their CHRISTMAS MARKET on Friday, 3rd December from 12 noon onwards in the Imperial Hall, Chapel Street, Epworth in conjunction with the switching-on of the Christmas Lights at 6.30 pm and the arrival of Father Christmas There will be a wonderful array of home made preserves, sweets and cakes, together with tombola, books, bran-tub, Christmas items, games, table decorations - and raffle with Christmas Hampers as prizes. Tea, coffee and cakes will be served throughout the day and mulled wine and mince pies from 4.00 pm.
―The full title of the organisation is the Yeomen of the Queen‘s Body Guard of Yeomen of the Guard,‖ explained speaker Trevor Jones, himself a serving Yeoman Warden for the past eight years. Mr Jones, of Manse Close, Cantley, in Doncaster, explained that all Yeomen Wardens are volunteers and have to be invited to join the Queen‘s body guard. Their number, he explained, is just over 100 strong and their current role now is purely ceremonial. He told members of the Society that the Yeomen were formed following the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, when Richard III was defeated by Henry Tudor, who went on to become Henry VII of England. The battle brought an end to the 40 year long War of the Roses between the house of York and Lancashire. Mr Jones, who had been a Regimental Sergeant Major in the Royal Signals, told members of the Society that the Queen‘s Body Guard of the Yeomen of the Guard is now the oldest Royal Body Guard, and also the oldest military corps now existing in this or any other country. He went on to explain that the when Henry VIII discontinued to use the Tower of London as his main residence in 1502 a small contingent of Yeomen remained and it is they who have the nickname of ―Beefeaters‖. ―They are known as the Yeomen Wardens of the Tower of London and not Yeomen of the Queen‘s Body Guard,‖ stressed Mr Jones. Anyone interested in finding out more about the Epworth Men‘s Society is asked to call Ken Bickerstaff on (01427) 872288.

Flower Club members, friends and visitors had a real treat, when Kate Riley came from Branton to demonstrate at the last meeting. The title was ―Inspired Buy‖ and these purchases were the bases for her designs. Kate‘s flowers were wonderfully fresh, each arrangement had a toned and harmonious colour scheme. There were sunflowers, dahlias, achillea, chinese lanterns, arum italicum seed heads, arranged in a continental style, in a plant trough holding a reed screen, which was the inspired buy for an end of summer/ beginning of autumn display of golds, rusts and orange. A piece of contorted driftwood stimulated Kate‘s thoughts for a modern design of gerberas, carnations, gladiolas in shades of yellow and peach. Ferns and spotted laurel were the background for lime green chrysanthemums, yellow lilies and the most beautiful Columbian rose, all arranged in a metal urn. An old piece of fencing was transformed by staging two placements of anthuriums into the fence post holes, so watch out farmers we are all on the look out for fence sculptures now ! Metal tables with a shower design of roses and carnations in pinks and white formed the final and most beautiful arrangement. All through the demonstration Kate talked about her full time job, her roll as Chairman of her flower Club, her participation in various flower events and festivals, until I , for one, felt worn out for her !, It was a stunning show and a wonderful evenings work from a very talented , busy lady. It was also good to see some new faces, who must have enjoyed their flower club experience , hopefully enough to come again. We meet next on Monday 8th November, for the BIG event of the flower club year, the OPEN MEETING, in Haxey Memorial Hall. Nick Grounds from Wisbech will start his demonstration , entitled ―Christmas Carols‖, at 7.30pm. ( Sorry to mention the ―C‖ word so early ! ) The cost of the tickets are £6 each , including seasonal refreshments and they are available from Flower Club members. Best wishes, Linda Pattison.

Police Report Priority 1 St Martin‘s Church and Castle Hill, Owston Ferry: Anti-social behaviour, Underage drinking, Criminal Damage, drug offences. PC Constable 1839
Tina Starbuck We have received reports of youths congregating around the church and Castle Hill mainly of an evening which is impacting on local residents and the church and its grounds. Due to the locality it does make it difficult for these people to be seen ordinarily and is an ideal area for groups to gather. There is also evidence of empty bottles of alcohol and other litter have been found. The Neighbourhood team are making regular patrols of the area and have already seized an amount of alcohol from underage persons and a couple of people have been dealt with for possession of cannabis. The Neighbourhood team will continue to patrol the areas and deal with whoever they come across. There has been an article in the Epworth Bells on Thursday 23 September which included comments from PS Garlick.
We are committed to providing a wide variety of opportunities to engage with you on a regular and frequent basis and ensure consultation and agreement upon local priorities. This provides and opportunity to update you and discuss progress. It is intended that at least one published meeting will be held at a village in the neighbourhood ward each month. This will ensure you know where you can attend to engage and work with your local police Neighbourhood team. Meetings will include traditional public meetings at schools and village halls, council meetings and community centres/village halls. To ensure that we consult as widely as possible we are always seeking new and innovative ways of communicating with the community and welcome any views or suggestions you may have. A police surgery/walkabout is held every month in one of the villages on the south ward and the next one is;West Woodside – Friday 29th October 2010, between 3pm-4pm – starting off at the Carpenters Arms Public House. The Neighbourhood team endeavour to fulfil the above dates, but please note that there may be occasions when we are unable to due to other policing requirements. The next Neighbourhood Action Team meeting will be held on Monday 13 th December 2010 at Owston Ferry Hall, at 7pm. This meeting is for the neighbourhood residents to have a ‗voice‘ representing them and for the members to decide what priorities are to be set and how best to tackle them. This meeting is attended by local councillors, and other nominated members of the public to represent you in order that the meeting can discuss and decide any appropriate action that may be required by different agencies. If you require any information please contact PC 1839 Tina Starbuck who will advise you further. The Neighbourhood team are going to be regularly attending South Axholme school to present a variety of topics to all ages during the new term 2010-2011. This is just one part of our growing relationship with the school and pupils. We have already given our first presentation on Personal Safety and Underage Drinking to Year 9, on Tuesday 21st September 2010. Our next presentation is on Thursday 7 th October to year 10 pupils and then again on Wednesday 13th October to Year 7.

The football is free of charge and is held every Friday night at the following times;7-15pm – 8-15pm for school year groups 5-8 8-15pm -9-15pm for school year groups 9+ For more information call Epworth Leisure Centre on 01427 873845 or e-mail michelle.spacey@northlincs.gov.uk PC 1839 Starbuck continues to attend and participate with the Pubwatch Scheme of which a number of public houses on the south and central wards are members of. The next meeting is on Tuesday 5 th October 2010 at the White Bear Public House, Epworth. This meeting is attended by the licensees to discuss issues affecting their respective pubs. PC 1839 Starbuck attends and is actively involved in the Farmwatch scheme covering the south and central wards of the Isle of Axholme. The scheme was set up with the involvement of local farmers from these wards. The meetings were a great success; however the last couple of meetings have had a poor turnout. The next meeting is WEDNESDAY 3rd NOVEMBER 2010 at 8pm at the RED LION HOTEL, EPWORTH. The farms within this area do suffer from theft of diesel as well as poachers so it is vital that the farms work together with the local police to deter this from happening.

Westwoodside Church of England School News Letter On Friday 1 October Westwoodside Church of England School hosted a visit by Bishop Christdoss from the Diocese of Tirunelveli in Southern India. Bishop Christdoss is responsible for a large number of schools in his Diocese while his wife is a teacher who is particularly interested in Church Schools. Bishop and Mrs Christdoss spent the afternoon with us and toured the School. They were accompanied by Revd Mike Cooney, the Rural Dean from the Diocese of Lincoln. The picture shows our visitors in the Foundation Stage. Bishop and Mrs Christdoss saw that, during the afternoon, volunteer Parents/Carers sorted the produce from our Harvest Festival Act of Worship in the morning. Pupils from throughout the School bought a carrier bag of produce to take home. We raised just over ÂŁ130 which will start our charity fund for this year. Thank you to everyone who helped in various ways. The School Council, Parents/Carers and Staff suggested a variety of worthy charities to support. The most popular amongst the School Council was meningitis research so it was decided to raise money for that cause this year. Congratulations to our kitchen which was awarded 5 stars (excellent), the highest possible, in the latest assessment of the Food Hygiene Inspection Score. Well done to everyone who contributed to this brilliant result! Best wishes Roger Marshall Headteacher

Get ready for Christmas! Great Vouchers inside your local magazine Publishers of magazines for your local community in the Doncaster and Isle of Axholme regions Terms and conditions may apply. www.arrowpublications.co.uk The November issue of the Arrow has linked with local businesses to make the run up to Christmas a cheaper and more pleasurable experience. Whether you want to start (or in some cases finish) your Christmas shopping; complete DIY jobs, pamper or treat yourself to a meal out, the Arrow has everything to save you money! What could be more convenient than the shops that are there on our doorstop? Don‘t pass them by as if they are somehow second rate. They are not. In fact convenience is only a part of the story as to why they deserve our support. Here is a little food for thought...Jumping into the car and heading for that outof-town super store or shopping mall may seem a good idea. But it can end up a time-wasting, costly and a frustrating experience. Time, they say, is precious. But how many hours are wasted in traffic jams, just getting to your destination – and then driving round to find a place to park In the meantime, the pennies you think you will save turn into pounds of extra expense. If it‘s a friendly, personal service you are after, then there‘s nothing finer than a shop or business in the Isle! Or maybe having someone come to you; there are plenty of mobile services out there for you to enjoy! Such attention is a tradition that has its roots embedded in the history of each village and hamlet in the area. The recent economic downturn has also had an impact on the local economy, which is why it is more important than ever to shop locally and support our local businesses. The growth of our villages in recent years has seen an increase in facilities and business services. But they can only survive if the people they are designed to serve support them. Let’s face it, we’d all miss them if they were not there!

Recent Events from Westwoodside C E Primary School
HARVEST TIME On Friday 1st October 2010, Westwoodside Church of England Primary School had a fantastic harvest festival with lots of fruit and vegetables. Everybody enjoyed it very much and we all loved watching different things such as parables of Jesus and singing songs. Most people brought in 50p to buy a bag of mixed fruit and vegetables. It looked like the parents enjoyed the harvest assembly as well as the staff and visitors. All of us sang one song and some classes did their own songs and dances. The whole school including nursery was watching. The classes did all they could to impress their parents and teachers.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Walk around Epworth Turbary A guided walk around Epworth Turbary, the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust‘s nature reserve, will take place on Sunday October 31st at 10am. There has been a lot of management work carried out on the Turbary over the past year to open up and enhance the reserve. Geoff Trinder, the reserve manager, and Matthew Blissett, a staff member, will take visitors round the reserve and explain what has been happening. Everyone is welcome so do come along and have an enjoyable walk round the reserve. Stout footwear or Wellingtons are advisable. Life under Water The November meeting of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust‘s Isle of Axholme group takes place on Thursday November 4th when Brian Jubb and John Naylor will be showing us some wonderful photographs of life under water. They have been to many places round the world taking photographs of the fascinating life found in the waters there, as well as life in the sea around Britain. There is an amazing variety of plants and animals to be seen and they have captured much of this on film. Both are excellent photographers so this will be a very enjoyable evening. Do come along and join us, everyone is welcome, meetings are always open to anyone, you don‘t have to be a member. Advance notice Make a note of our next meeting, Thursday December 2nd, when we have our annual members slide and digital night. This is always a popular meeting so put it in your diary. We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff‘s house in Belton. The Isle of Axholme
Where You Live
Your Local History
Adapted by Anthony Catherall The Drainage of the Isle (continued)
The drainage of the Cornish tin mines greatly influenced the drainage of the Isle of Axholme. The introduction of pumping engines brought about a new era in the history of the drainage of the Isle. The first pumping engine was installed at Misterton Soss after the flood of 1828. In 1837 Sir Robert Sheffield installed an engine draining Butterwick South Moor. In 1858 Bull Hassocks pumping station was opened and Dirtness in 1867. At Dirtness the engine was renewed in 1928 and the present electrically driven pumps were installed in 1952. Other pumping stations include Snow Sewer, Candy Farm, Goodcop, Tunnel Pits (one of the newest, built in 1962) and of course Keadby, the key pumping station where most of the Isle’s water is pumped into the Trent. The present six Keadby pumps date from1940 and can lift 102 million gallons a day, through thirteen and a half feet each. The area drained by Keadby pumping station is 93,430 acres. Engineers of the Trent River Board are constantly making improvements to the drainage. In 1972 the Skyers drain west of Epworth Turbary was dug to feed a small pumping station into the South Level Engine Drain’ Some of Vermuyden’s original drains are still in operation with the modification such as: the New River Torne the New Idle Drain from Idle Stop to Dirtness Dutch River to Goole some dry channels from Pilfrey Bridge to Althorpe. Other items that can be seen in connection with the history of drainage include, the old course of the River Idle west of Tunnel Pits the old course of the Don in Eastoft village, and as marked on a two and half one inch to I mile map showing its course along parish boundaries. Vermuyden’s headquarters at Sandtoft – on the left well set back from the road near the crossroads. The new season at Axholme Camera Club got off to a good start with several new members joining. Club Secretary Joyce Hooley has been busy all summer booking some very interesting speakers for the coming months, and with workshops, members' evenings and competitions the programme is varied, full of interest and activity. The first speaker was Club member Geoff Trinder ARPS, a wildlife photographer who shared his knowledge and showed his work in an inspiring and fascinating talk, Photographing Birds in Flight. He was followed by John Jones, equally knowledgeable in his field, Life in the Darkness. John, along with his 80 year old assistant, has been studying the living things in a disused drift mine in Derbyshire, recording his findings over the last 10 years. Spiders, Moths, Bats, Fungi and other things found in the dark, damp conditions underground may not be everyone's favourite things, but John had such enthusiasm for his subject, and a wealth of information, with a dash of humour that the members were thoroughly educated and entertained. Gary Brown, a local man, brought along his equipment and talked about his work as an Events photographer. Many people think of turning their hobby into a business, and Gary has done this, with help from his daughter Katy. It was a very interesting evening, but dispelled any idea that this might be an easy option for fellow photographers. So far, there has been one competition, an Open Subject, which, as usual, was very well attended. The judge, Alan Robson FRPS APAGB travelled from Selby to view and comment on the prints. George Fiddler did well with a win and a 2nd place, also Jean Goodburne, Albert Phillipson, Harry Snow and Judy Newton.

TRENTSIDE CONFEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS…… The children of St Martin‘s Primary School held a very successful and popular cake stall on Thursday 30th September. This was to raise money for the victims of the floods in Pakistan. It was the idea of Mrs Jane Ayris (Teacher of Years 1 & 2). Pupils in Years 1 & 2 baked cakes and biscuits in school. In addition to this, there was an enormous response from the rest of the children and their families (including some wonderful Grandmas!) who brought in a terrific amount of cakes, scones and biscuits. We have now counted up all of the takings and can report that our small school raised £63.02 towards this appeal. Cakes were sold at the end of school as well – there were so many donations! We would like to thank all of our children and their families for putting in the extra effort to helping us run such an impressive and popular cake stall.
The children featured in the picture are Travis Linehan, Matthew Carter, Sherayi Mauluka, Daniel Glew, Ella Woodcock, Sekayi Mauluka and Saskia Heighington.

While debates continue about whether or not modern mums should be ‘career women’, ‘stay at home mums’ or aim to ‘have it all’ a new survey reveals whatever work life balance they achieve, over a third of mums in Doncaster and the Isle of Axholme feel guilty asking for help in the home. In the survey commissioned by MOLLY MAID more than 3,000 modern mums were asked about their work and home-life balance. Shockingly the survey revealed that nearly three quarters of local mums are the ones responsible for cleaning their home, while only five per cent of their spouses take on this task. The survey also revealed that given the choice, less than seven per cent of modern mums would work full time. However, over three quarters currently work three or more days a week, yet over half don‘t take advantage of time saving services such as online grocery shopping. All this domestic responsibility also puts a strain on relationships with over a third of women surveyed stating they do not get enough help with their cleaning and over 82 percent of mums saying that the running of their household affects their relationship with their partner in a negative way. Family time suffers too, with a third of mums spending an hour or less of quality family time a day. Pam Bader OBE, Chief Executive of MOLLY MAID, explained: ―Many mothers have less time to devote to their families and households due to the pressures of modern living and the results show it can have a negative affect on family life and relationships. It‘s surprising that even in this day and age women are still doing the majority of the cleaning. ―It‘s easy to forget all the help that‘s available these days - whether it‘s online shopping, childminders, gardeners or other services such as those offered by MOLLY MAID. However, services like these should be regarded as an affordable necessity as they can help give back the precious and irreplaceable family time, and of course all important ‗me-time‘, mums would otherwise struggle to fit in.‖ Andy and Lynne Crewe who owns the local MOLLY MAID franchise said: ―We were amazed at how many mums weren‘t using the help available, especially considering the amount of free family time this could give them. A MOLLY MAID is a great way to get a few extra hours back a week.‖ For more information on how MOLLY MAID can help please visit www.mollymaid.co.uk

Doncaster Advanced Motorist Beyond the test Steering Dear readers You should hold the steering wheel with your hands at the ‗quarter-to three‘ or ten-to-two position. Steering movements should be made by feeding the wheel through your hands. You pass the wheel from one hand to the other at all times. It sounds complicated, but this is the smoothest, safest and most natural way to control the steering. If you are not used to steering in this way, your movements may at first feel they lack co-ordination. But it only takes practice to develop the technique into a fluid, controlled movement. Once perfected you will find it uncomfortable to steer in any other way. Driving with one hand on the wheel arises simply through laziness. This gives you poor control at all times, and puts you at a disadvantage if you need to react quickly. If, on a long drive, you find it tiring to keep both hands in the correct place, your driving position may need adjustment. There are many times, of course when one hand has to be taken off the wheel. Apart from changing gear, opening a window or operating switches are common occasions. Try to do these things when travelling in a straight line and in quiet traffic situations. Many people let go of the wheel completely for a brief moment. How can they react if they have to take avoiding action? A common mistake after a turn is to let the steering‘s self-centring action spin the wheel straight. While doing this, a driver has no control at all. Some people hold the wheel with both hands close together at the top or the bottom. This is neither relaxing nor appropriate for good control. Your hands should be opposite each other to allow quick steering in ether direction. Crossing arms must be avoided control is sacrificed since crossing arms prevent more lock being added. Imagine you misjudge a corner and halfway through you find it tightening unexpectedly. If your arms are already crossed, you prevent yourself steering any further without a great deal of scrambling with the wheel. Initially the wheel is turned very gently, and then the rate of rotation is slightly speeded up once the car has settled into its cornering attitude. Applying this sensitivity means that the passengers hardly feel changes of direction. Power steering must be treated with respect because it is all too easy for sudden steering movements on a slippery road to cause the front wheels to break grip and start a skid. Artificial lightness should not be regarded as an indication that a car‘s road holding is any better.
