You may have already started thinking about Christmas! On writing this editorial we have 70 days left until the big day! I know it all comes round so fast!
Before Christmas we have our festivities in November, Bonfire night; this is one of my favourite times of the year! Millions of people throughout many centuries have enjoyed fireworks. Accidents can happen with anything though - anytime, anywhere. Don't let it happen to you, because the consequences of carelessness can be devastating. Enjoy Bonfire night where ever you are and keep safe!

News, News, News... Haxey Amateur Dramatic Society is busy with rehearsals for its Autumn Production. This year, two one-act plays are to be staged. The first, “None The Wiser” by Anthony Booth, is set in a convent, with the strangest group of nuns you could ever come across. The second, “Ask A Silly Question” by Richard Tydeman, sees a Parent Teacher Association asking some very silly questions and receiving even sillier answers ! Audiences will enjoy seeing old familiar faces and two new ones, expertly directed by Mary Lenanton. The production takes place from Wednesday 30th October to Saturday 2nd November in Haxey Memorial Hall at 7.30 p.m. and tickets are available in the Hood Room at Haxey Memorial Hall on Monday 14th October from 10.00 a.m. till 12 noon and thereafter at Greenhill Stores, Haxey from 9.00 – 5.00 daily. At just £5 a ticket, it’s a night not to be missed !

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No. 17 by Anthony Catherall
In my now long life and like many of you reading this you will like me recall different era’s in your life too. In fact 1966 was in itself an era of football excellence, when Alf Ramsey’s disciplined squad won the World Cup against Germany 4-2 after extra-time, England have not achieved such glory ever since. In their own inimitable way the Epworth Mowbray players had their era coupled with glory. There were then, one of literally hundreds of dramatic societies performing locally all over the country, some are still in existence, but I believe that in these past articles we have fully justified and given Epworth Mowbray Players the recognition they fully deserve. They gave so much pleasure to thousands of people in those past years of excellent productions. I have met only a handful of these performers, but one stands out above all others that inspired me to write about their exploits Miss Marjorie Trimingham. Whenever I visit her in Haxey she is always as bright now as she ever was, may God Bless you forever Marjorie. So we come to the last performances of these dedicated amateur thespians, giving their own characterisations in Bill Naughton’s My Flesh, My Blood”. Produced this time, by Rev. W. B. Harvey, B.A. and unusually performed, during the autumn on 26-29 October 1966, all proceeds of which went to the Renovation Fund of St Andrews Church. Space precludes me from much more detail, but only Gordon Fletcher is missing from the cast photograph below.

Handsome Nina is looking for his new home! This lovely lady is Nina, a stunning 2 year old Rottweiler Husky Cross. She is a really friendly girl who loves fuss and treats, and walks well on the lead. She has lived with children, so a home with older children would be fine. She has also lived with cats, but is not always good with other dogs, so would need to be the only dog in the house. Nina is spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you are interested in adopting Nina, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.

We've returned from our half term break ready and refreshed for our new term leading up to Christmas. The children are well and truly settled in their new classrooms, along with several new members of staff: teachers Miss Czaplinski and Mrs Parker in year 1, and Mrs Coley, Mrs Graham, Mrs Barker, Mrs Huntington, Mrs Murray and Mrs Furnish who are all teaching assistants. We have recently held our harvest festival in St Nicholas Church. Our theme was Water. Each year group performed either a song, poem or rhyme, including our new pupils in Foundation. Reverend Green reminded us about the importance of harvest festival, and the children brought in enough fruit and vegetables for us to provide hampers for the more senior residents of the village, we also had a collection for the worthwhile cause of Water aid. Thank you to all who supported the service, we had more people than seats and it was lovely to see this event so well attended. We hope to see as many again at our next school service. On 27th September year 6 held a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan nurses. They brought in home made cakes and served drinks in the school hall. After school they sold off buns in the playground and in total raised £235.96. This is a fantastic achievement and those who took part should be very proud of themselves. Our children in year 5 are focusing on World War Two and have a trip planned to Eden Camp in November, see pictures and reports in the next Arrow. We have also had a visit from the local policing team who have spoken to all year groups about strangers. Please discuss regularly with your child the associated dangers, particularly now the nights are drawing in. Can parents who travel by car to school please be mindful when parking outside our school on the Nooking. We are having complaints about children being let out of vehicles into the road and not on the pavement, and almost grid lock. May we suggest parking elsewhere and walking perhaps along the back path, or have you considered walking to school if at all possible? Please do not block the driveways of our neighbours, we only have the children's safety at heart. We will be holding our Christmas fair anytime soon, please check our website for details and support our lovely school by buying locally with proceeds to a good cause, hope to see you there!

Camera Club News... At the meeting on Tuesday 8 October 2013 the speaker was David Gibbins ARPS, AFIAP, APAGB, BPE3. from Beeston near Nottingham. David has been a photographic Judge for more than 30 years, and over the years has been heavily involved with the North East and Midlands Photography Federation (NEMPF). Holding several positions including Chairman and for the last four years he as held the position of the Judge and Speaker Secretary. Hence he is very well qualified both as a photographer and a Judge. In the role of Judge and Speaker Secretary he is responsible to ensure that the Judges and Speaker who are registered with NEMPF are capable of fulfilling the rolls within the guidelines. In doing so hopefully improving the standard of Speakers and Judges being asked by Camera Clubs who are members of the Federation. David gave the Axholme Camera Club members the talk titled “Guidelines on Being a Judge this was followed by a session on questions and answers from the floor. There was no shortage of questions a sure sign the subject and the talk was very well received. David retired from his job with Sky-B-Sky in 2012 and has been spending time doing more photography plus entering more exhibitions both in the UK and Over Seas. In doing so he has had success and increased the number of acceptances and awards for his photographs. At the end of the meeting Individual members gave their thanks for an interesting talk but the vote of thanks was given by Vice Chairperson Chairman Roberts who expressed the feelings and gratitude of the Club and its members.

HERITAGE SOCIETY MEETINGS At the previous meeting of the society in September chairman Jackie Starr recalled recent highly successful events, the award of the eleventh annual Literary award to year 6 pupils and the publishing of a book containing the previous nine years winning stories, our visit to see and hear the history of the only airworthy Vulcan bomber at Robin hood Airport and gave notice of three further planned events, a table top sale at Haxey, a society Christmas shopping trip to York and in 2014 an exhibition to mark the forthcoming WW1 centenary Jackie then introduced the speaker, Marilyn Roberts, for the evening. Marilyn commenced her talk on Elizabeth 1 by showing how Elizabeth was descended from the Mowbrays and therefore had a close link with the Isle and continued with the aid of slides to show the people, the relationships and inter-relationships of Elizabeth from an early age and how these had influenced her character and personality. A vote of thanks for a fascinating insight into the life of Elizabeth 1 was given by Geoff. Starr. The monthly free draw then took place and was won by Mr. Malcolm Deneley. The meeting closed with refreshments served. Marilyn Roberts presents the draw prize to Mr. Deeneley

October saw the AGM of the Society when members received the annual reports of the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer followed by the resignation and re-election of committee members. Jackie Starr had retired from the committee and following the election Diane Hardy was nominated chairman. AGMs can be a dull affair for members, so to combat this, as in previous years, a surprise event was arranged to follow the business side of the meeting. The surprise item for the evening was a talk and display given by Mr Andrew Wright of Thornton’s chocolate, Diane introduced Andrew after informing members of the proposed December Christmas shopping trip to York. A lively interest was taken in the chocolate display a range of samples were tasted and many items were sold, probably with Christmas in mind. Following refreshments the meeting closed.

A bit of Halloween History... Halloween’ or ‘Hallows Eve’ is an annual, internationally celebrated event on the 31st October. ‘ In today’s society it appears that the underlining origins behind Halloween has dwindled and it is not commonly celebrated for the correct reasons, primarily for confectionary and mysterious pursuits. Halloween is a celebration surrounded by superstition and ghoulish activities. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. During this time people would light bonfires to warn off any roaming ghosts because it was thought that on the eve of Samhain, which was the 31st October, the dead returned as ghosts.
This is why today we use lit pumpkins as a traditional Halloween decoration. Over time Halloween has evolved to a more community friendly celebration involving trick or treating, which is always popular among children. With Halloween increasing in popularity, it has become big business in numerous countries, globally. It is one of the most celebrated events in the calendar so however you chose to spend your Halloween, either in a more traditional way or more contemporary, embrace its history and origins.

Westwoodside Church of England School News Every Autumn Term we celebrate Harvest Festival. Recently we have been focussing on the strengths of Fairness, Gratitude, Enthusiasm and Generosity and how they relate to Harvest, as part of our annual cycle of Celebrating Strengths. On Wednesday 02 October we held our Harvest Festival Act of Worship in School. We had decided to support The Scunthorpe Foodbank as our charity this year so children were asked to donate tins and packets of food that could be donated. We had a tremendous response with 178 kg of tins etc. being generously donated. We welcomed Mr Ian Davies, The Scunthorpe Foodbank Collection Coordinator who told us that the level of donations was very good for a school of our size. In fact, at one point, he wasn’t sure if it would all fit in his car! Mr Davies explained that the foodbank provides short term support for individuals and families in crisis. He also visited the Foundation Stage class. Reverend Jeremy Green also helped us think about the meaning of Harvest Festival and led us in a prayer during our special F2 to Year 6 assembly. Parents/Carers enjoyed each Year 1 – 6 class performing an item related to Harvest e.g. a song, poem, drama or information about Harvest around the world. In the afternoon, Mrs Wilson’s Year 4 class joined the Social 60s Harvest Festival in the Village Hall, performing their Harvest song. Their involvement was much appreciated by the older members of our community. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our celebration. Roger Marshall Head Teacher

European Languages Day
On 26th September, 20 Year 9 students took part in European Day of Languages to celebrate the importance of language learning, cultural diversity and above all, how fun learning a language can be. European Day is a popular event with many countries taking part across the World. During the day, students researched and wrote articles for inclusion in the 3 rd edition of the Modern Foreign Languages’ newspaper ‘Quoi de Neuf?’ This year’s newspaper includes articles on fashion, sport, topical news stories, interviews with new members of staff and puzzles. At morning break, students were able to take part in a food tasting session, where they enjoyed food and snacks from a number of different countries across Europe. This proved to be very popular! The newspaper will be available from school very soon. If you would like a copy, please contact one of the Modern Foreign Languages team.
Year 9 English Schools’ Cup The Year 9's visited Howden in the first round of the English schools’ cup competition. South Axholme started the game well. Harvey Ablett, Max Brinkley and Richie Burdett all had shots blocked off the line in the opening 15 minutes. Richie Burdett's set piece delivery continued to cause all sorts of problems for Howden, and it was only a combination of bad luck and good defending which kept the scoreline at 0-0 going into half-time. South Axholme continued to apply the pressure in the second half and Max Brinkley was rewarded for his hard work with a well taken opening goal. The game then started to open up, suiting South Axholme’s fast paced attacks. Substitute, Bobby Foster, added an impressive hat trick. Man of the match, Ritchie Burdett scored 2 and there were also goals for Robbie Robson, Scott Ewen and Harvey Ablett. The scoreline was kept one-sided by 3 excellent saves by Joe Maxfield late in the game. Final Score: Howden 0-9 South Axholme Man of the Match - Richie Burdett
Pegler Visit Year 9 Business Studies students took part in a visit to Pegler Yorkshire, Doncaster. This is the first time we have visited Peglers, (the largest manufacturer of plumbing components in Europe). We are very grateful to Peglers staff who made us very welcome and had organised a very informative andTo detailed tour of please the plant. Our students all agreed it had advertise call 01302 532676 or 07912 given them a good insight into the world of manufacturing.

THE APPLE OF YOUR ISLE NEWS In the last article I looked at picking and storing your fruit. In this article I am looking at some things you can do with your fruit and start to look at some health care for your trees over the winter. As well as eating your apples and pears and turning them into jams, chutneys and a variety of tasty disjes, you can also turn them into fresh apple and pear juice and into cider and perry. The process for making juice (and the further step to make it into cider and perry) is not difficult. Different varieties of apples and pears produce different amounts of juice when pressed. An early apple which produces much sweet juice is Katy. This is a favourite of some commercial producers of apple juice as well as being one of my favourites. Using apples which are ripe and have been allowed to mature on the tree rather than being picked early ensures that many of the natural fruit sugars can be available in your juice. The process for making juice follows these stages: collecting suitable fruit and discarding any that it is mouldy or very badly damaged; washing it (apple juice flavoured with dirt is not my favourite); breaking down the metabolism of the fruit either by smashing it (the traditional way was to smash the fruit in a bucket with a large piece of wood, but nowadays we use a large mincer – called a scratter – but you could use an electric drill with a mixing attachment) or by freezing the fruit; and then pressing the pulp into juice. The commercial producers of produce pasteurise the juice to prevent it from going off or becoming alcoholic. I found that bottled produce starts to ferment (using the natural yeasts in the air) after about three days. If you can't drink all your juice in this time – and unless you want to make it into cider – you can freeze it. This process is relatively straightforward once you have the right equipment, and you might be interested to know that The Apple of Your Isle hire out pressing equipment. From October onwards trees start to lose their leaves. The process of tidying up around your fruit trees is an important one at this time of year. Collecting up falling leaves will give you a wonderful leaf compost for your garden next year if the leaves are bagged or otherwise collected to rot down. If the leaves remain on the ground they will get blown about and some will be used by worms. If you don’t tidy them away you risk harbouring any diseases transferred from the tree to the leaves. The same applies to rotten fruit – of any size – and these should be collected and binned. As the leaves fall from a tree, it is worth starting to look at the growth that the tree has made this year and also spot any damage to branches. This might be because of a great weight of fruit, but there might also be signs of disease – canker perhaps - in the wood. This will prepare you for the task later in the year of pruning the tree. The Apple of Your Isle is a local organisation which encourages the growth and use of apples and pears. We have equipment you can hire so that you can press your own fruit at home. If you 40 likePlease mention about “The would more information ourArrow” activities or would like to talk about your trees and fruit, please contact Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS We are almost at the half-way point for this Autumn Term and we are well underway with the World War II topic for Key Stage 2 at St Martin’s. Very shortly, we shall be welcoming Bob Fish, former Headteacher of St Martin’s, in to school as he is to give a personalised talk about his family’s World War ll experiences. The youngest pupils (Nursery and Reception) from both our schools have been enjoying new resources linked to Water Play and Den Building. These resources are linked in to the exciting ‘Early Excellence Project’ that the Federation is involved with – ‘Enhancing Outdoor Learning for 3 – 5 Year Olds’. We are looking forward to seeing how this develops over the coming year. At this time of year, we are very much focused on Harvest Festival and there has been plenty of vegetable growing at West Butterwick with the ‘We Can Grow’ Project. The tomatoes and carrots were a great success. We still have some leeks and celery to harvest, not to mention another pumpkin! Once this has been done, we shall formulate a growing plan for this next year. I know that strawberries will be on the menu once again as they were so popular last year. Gardening skills are to be extended to bulb-planting this term too, as a group of children are to take on ‘planting up’ a flower bed in St Mary’s churchyard. Look out for some Spring colour in due course. Harvest Festivals this year raised money for Anthony Nolan - a charity dedicated to supporting childhood leukaemia sufferers in the UK, saving lives of people with blood cancer. This charity was founded almost 40 years ago by Shirley Nolan, in honour of her son. The charity finds incredible individuals willing to donate blood stem cells to save the lives of people with blood cancer. Since setting up this charity, 10,000 people have received transplants that have given them a chance of life. Leukaemia is the biggest childhood cancer in the UK. I would like to thank all of the children and their families for their generous donations of gifts as these were ‘auctioned off’ following the services. Thanks too, to Jean Marshall for being our auctioneer at West Butterwick. A number of tins and packets from St Martin’s were also sent off to The Forge in Scunthorpe for the benefit of ‘vulnerable people’ in our local community such as the homeless, offering them breakfast, hot drinks, lunch and activities to engage in. Our School Councillors for 13/14 have now been elected by their peer groups. We look forward to working with Levi, Harvey, Anya, Daisy, Josh and Danielle of West Butterwick and Melissa, Maisie, Leon, Ethan, Yasmine and Olivia of St Martin’s. The School Council from 12/13 of West Butterwick will also continue to run as they have a ‘Playground Markings’ project to see through that was started last academic year. A focus for this year’s School Councils will be ‘Healthy Schools’. We now have Playground Leaders and ‘Sports Ambassadors’ too, at both schools. Our Sports Ambassadors, a number of our oldest pupils, have been identified as having ‘potential leadership qualities’. They will attend an ‘Ambassadors Academy’ - a practical day where young people from across North Lincolnshire will have the opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills, linked to sporting activities, that can be taken back to their schools, to be put into practice in a variety of settings such as lunchtime activities and after school clubs. I am sure that they are very excited about their involvement in this project. The visit to Beckingham Marshes by Key Stage 1 at St Martin’s was successful, although the day’s weather was wet wet wet! A good time was had by all. Thank goodness for wellies and waterproofs! We are looking forward to the forthcoming Family Service that will take part at St Mary’s Church on Sunday 27th October. The theme is ‘Bible Sunday. The next Community Worship (Lighting the Candle Group) will take place on the afternoon of Friday 22nd November at 3pm in St Mary’s. St Martin’s Service of Remembrance will take place on Friday 15th November,1.30pm start in church. DRINK-DRIVERS FACE TOUGHER RULES Dear readers, Drink-drive rules involving the most serious offenders are to be tightened up. Under new regulations the most dangerous offenders will have to prove they are no longer dependent on alcohol before they are allowed to get back behind the wheel. The new measures will also see those drink-drivers who obstruct the police by refusing to allow their blood samples to be analysed being treated the same as other high risk offenders. Currently, all high risk offenders must pass a medical examination before they can be issued with a driving licence following their disqualification. However, drivers can start driving as soon as they have applied for their licence and before they have taken and passed the necessary medical. But from June 1 the most dangerous drink-drivers will have to pass a medical confirming they are no longer alcohol dependent at the end of their disqualification and BEFORE they start driving. Also, those offenders who refuse to allow their blood samples to be analysed will also, from June 1, only get their licence back following disqualification if they pass the required medical. Under the High Risk Offender (HRO) scheme, drivers convicted of certain serious drink/driving offences must have a medical investigation to confirm that there are no on-going problems with the misuse of alcohol before they can be issued with a licence. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA is notified of such offenders by the courts. Last year the DVLA was notified by the courts of just over 50,000 drink-driving convictions. Nearly 22,000 of those were classed as high risk offenders. Of those, around 5,000 drivers either failed, or failed to attend, their medical. Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond said: "Drink-drivers are a menace and it is right that we do everything we can to keep the most high risk offenders off the road. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer you will be able to find this information by contacting. Paul Tuke.
