Lions Fund Defibrillator in Misterton The North Notts Lions have funded the installation of a life saving defibrillator which has now been installed at the Swimming Pool on the Misterton Primary School site on Grovewood Road. The local voluntary Five Villages First Responder (FVFR) group started a project earlier in the year with the aim to provide community public access defibrillators (CPADs) within Misterton and other local villages. The North Notts Lions stepped forward and agreed to fund the cost of the defibrillator and cabinet which has been placed on the exterior wall of the Swimming Pool building next to the Misterton Primary School. A further public defibrillator has recently been installed on the exterior wall of the Misterton Centre on High Street next to the Coop. This unit has been funded by public donations and support from Misterton Coop through their “Community Champions” scheme. Another one has been in place at the Haxey Gate Inn and golf course on Haxey Road, Misterton, for the last three years. The simple to use Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) can be potentially life saving when someone suffers a cardiac arrest, which is when the patient’s heart stops beating correctly and they stop breathing. In such a situation every second counts. For every minute that goes by the chance of survival reduces by as much as 10 to 14%. But with fast and effective CPR and defibrillation the chances of survival increase hugely. The FVFR team work in partnership with East Midlands Ambulance Service and have already trained over 60 people in how to perform CPR and how to use an AED. This includes staff from the school and swimming teachers, along with staff from Misterton Coop, the Sure Start Centre, the Misterton Centre, Wayne Howe’s butchers and the Haxey Gate Inn. Jane Cappleman-Jackson, Head Teacher at Misterton Primary School said: “We would like to thank North Notts Lions for very kindly funding this defibrillator and to FVFR for their support and training. The swimming pool is used by school pupils from many local villages, as well as being open for public and private sessions to people young and old. Having an AED on site and people who have been trained in how to use it could be potentially life saving in the event of a cardiac arrest occurring.” Paramedic and Group Coordinator of FVFR, Martyn Johnson said: “You will now see AEDs in many public places such as shopping centres, leisure centres, airports and train stations and now also more and more in towns, villages and communities across the country. Our project has seen AEDs placed in the rural villages of Misterton, Beckingham and Gringley on the Hill already. With units soon to be installed in Walkeringham and West Stockwith too. Fund raising has also been taken place in Everton for an AED in the village too. We would like to thank all those organisations and individuals who have supported the project so far, including those who have provided donations and funding.” The AEDs at Misterton Primary School and the Misterton Centre are in external cabinets allowing for them to be accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The details of the AED are stored on the ambulance control room dispatch system and if a 999 call is made nearby reporting a cardiac arrest or possible cardiac arrest, the caller is advised where the AED is located, is given the access code and advised to send someone to collect the AED. Anyone can use an AED if a cardiac arrest occurs, prior training is not required as instructions are given by the ambulance 999 operator to the caller on how to use the AED, as well as there being visual and audible instructions given from the unit itself as soon as the lid is opened up. This all happens while the nearest ambulance resources are on route, but because the AED is nearby, the chances of survival are much greater. For further information about the Community First L-R: Phil Kelly (North Notts Lions); Colin Gibson (FVFR Chair & First Responder group and the public AEDs, please visit the Responder); Dave Smith (School Site Manager); 12 at www.fvfr.co.uk, Please mention “The Arrow”orwhen responding to advertisements website email contact@fvfr.co.uk Martyn Johnson (Paramedic/FVFR Coordinator) and phone 07909 001 226. The members of Epworth and District Flower Club began their October meeting with refreshments which were supplemented by delicious birthday cake from Mrs Marian Hughes. This was a change from the norm but the reason became obvious a little later. Debbie Beecher, the group’s chairman, welcomed everyone and especially thanked the hostesses who had adapted the refreshment serving to suit the circumstances. Rachel Poole, the demonstrator for the evening was then introduced and welcomed. With much hilarity Rachel explained how she had been so confidently misdirected to the hall and had spent a considerable time exploring Haxey and Westwoodside which made her late to prepare for her demonstration. She began with an enormous arrangement of contorted hazel attached onto a long rectangular base. Into this she placed moss, quite legally obtained from a grave digger, as moss is protected. Into her large horizontal base she placed five tall, pink gladioli and then she used leycesteria to add some dimension. Next was added ivy and pussy willow to “punctuate” before Rachel inserted pretty red, small roses to carry the colour right down into the base. Her first arrangement was then accompanied by two similar but smaller arrangements, one of which also included two ornamental brassicas. For her second arrangement Rachel began with another large container. This time it was a willow basket and she proceeded to inform us of her passion for willow. It became obvious that Rachel doesn’t do things by halves. She inserted very large, shiny fatsia leaves and explained that the arrangement would be divided for the winner. Several large creamy yellow lilies of varying height were inserted and then Rachel added hypericum and told the group that by removing the leaves the berries are encouraged to keep their colour. Three autumnal shaded ornamental gourds were placed into the arrangement and then some very pretty thistle like flower contributed more autumn colour. Candlelight roses completed that arrangement. Much interest was aroused by the next containers, a set of varying cork cylinders which each held test tubes. This time Rachel inserted cedum, leycesteria and elderberries creating a simple pendulous effect. Some of the containers then had one rose added and some had hypericum with dark berries. Rachel explained that she enjoyed modern creations and that this one was inexpensive and simple for anyone to create. Much to the amusement of her audience Rachel embarked on the fourth arrangement. This time she produced a block of loft insulating material which was stabilised with candle supports. The front was covered with bark and the block had holes drilled into the top into which were inserted, along with some dainty grasses, a variety of blue flowers. These included blue veronica, iris and agapanthus. As previously Rachel produced two more similar arrangements of varying sizes. These created a stunning modern effect. Finally, true to form Rachel produced another large base into which she inserted two long willow canes which she proceeded to fasten into a shape similar to that of an onion! Fatsia leaves and ivy were used to cover the mechanics along with hydrangea and skimmia. Then molucella was supported on the willow, beautiful lemon gladioli and lilies of a similar shade gave colour and one green anthurium, two small ornamental brassicas and some pussy willow completed another very unusual design. Again Rachel created two more similar designs of slightly different sizes. The group had been well entertained by Rachel’s repartee as she worked and she gave hints on technique to help all members. Her demonstration gave an interesting modern approach without being too “way out” and the members showed their appreciation in the usual way. There were also more raffle prizes than on some occasions as Rachel had produced so many arrangements. A little further business followed. A letter from Mrs Marian Hughes was read thanking members for their support of her fundraising activities when she celebrated her birthday. Then members were reminded to take some seasonal food contributions to the open meeting on November 17th. Tickets for the evening are available from members and notices advertising will be in the locality. The cost is £8 and the demonstration will be given by Lyn Bottamley. It will be at the Haxey Memorial Hall at 7.30p.m.

The Sound Stealer by Joss Bradley, Year 4 A troll called at dusk, Dressed all in blood-red and grey. Put every sound into a chest, And carried them all away. The frog’s mournful croaking The roaring of a tiger. The crocodiles snapping their vicious teeth The squelching of the swamp. The sloth’s soundless snoring The growling of the leopard. The wind’s gentle whisper The flapping of the parrot’s wings. A troll called at dusk. He didn’t leave his name. Left us only in silence…. Life will never be the same.

HOW DO YOU VALUE YOUR LANDSCAPE? The Isle of Axholme and Hatfield Chase Landscape Partnership is a new project, mainly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) creating new opportunities to reconnect local people with their landscape and sense of place in Hatfield Woodhouse, Moorends, Thorne and the Isle of Axholme. The project hopes to fund a range of projects over five years from 2016-2020, to: • Conserve, protect and enhance the built, natural and cultural heritage of the area. • Increase people’s understanding, use and enjoyment of the heritage of the area. • Enhance the economy of the area by making it a place where people want to live, work and visit. • Support the local community by providing a range of training, skills and volunteering opportunities. • Establish a long term partnership that continues to have a positive impact on the area after the initial five years of the programme. To help this research we have been asked to contact our members/ volunteers/ supporters to encourage them to participate in the online survey that can be found at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Isle_of_Axholme_LPS The IoAHCLP would like your thoughts and ideas on how you use the area, how to open up more chances for people to benefit and enjoy it, and how these could be achieved. It would help the development of the project considerably if you would take a few minutes to complete the on‐line questionnaire at the link above. The Partnership also needs local groups, organisations and individuals to bring forward ideas and support projects that emerge in the community. West Butterwick School News We are almost at the half-way point for this Autumn Term. The Harvest Festivals went well, raising money for two charities. St Martin’s Harvest Festival this year raised money for Anthony Nolan - a charity dedicated to supporting childhood leukaemia sufferers in the UK, saving lives of people with blood cancer. This charity was founded almost 40 years ago by Shirley Nolan, in honour of her son. The charity finds incredible individuals willing to donate blood stem cells to save the lives of people with blood cancer. Since setting up this charity, 10,000 people have received transplants that have given them a chance of life. Leukaemia is the biggest childhood cancer in the UK. West Butterwick raised money for The Forge in Scunthorpe, for the benefit of ‘vulnerable people’ in our local community such as the homeless, offering them breakfast, hot drinks, lunch and activities to engage in. Both schools in our Federation would like to thank all of the children and their families for their generous donations of gifts. West Butterwick School is about to hold the first School Community Worship (Lighting the Candle Group) of this academic year. ‘The Calming of the Storm’ is the theme. We have a new group of worship leaders this term – Jack C, Olivia, Jessica, Jack S, Emily, Nathan and Joshua P. For most of this group it will be their first time leading worship. They are looking forward to it! Mrs Josephine Buckle, Headteacher, St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools – the Trentside Federation

If you would you like a larger network of safe off-road routes on the Isle, which are ideal for outdoor family activities then local community group Axholme Bridleways Association invite you to join them so that they can represent your views. Axholme Bridleways Association is currently involved with the Axholme Greenway project and the associated upgrade of local footpaths to bridleways. Though the term ‘bridleways’ suggests these routes are for horses and riders, bridleways are in fact multiuser routes for cyclists, runners and walkers too. As the volume and speed of road traffic increases, it is important that vulnerable road users have access to more of these safer routes, plus spending more time outdoors is good for our health. This group was formed in 2012 to work in harmony with the community, parish councils and North Lincolnshire Council to raise awareness of the importance of safe public rights of way for all users. Axholme Bridleways Association organise various events throughout the year and have already helped raise £1500 for local charities and have held two Tidy Bridleways Days this year to help clear local routes which have become overgrown. The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 states that rights of way in existence (footpaths and bridleways) on 1 January 1949 not shown on the local definitive map by 1 January 2026 will be lost forever. Axholme Bridleways Association are here to represent local people in keeping local rights of way open for future generations to enjoy. If you would like to know more about joining this local community group please contact Axholme Bridleways Association on 07779 434213 or via email on axholmebridleways@yahoo.co.uk and ‘like’ the facebook page Axholme Bridleways Association. The next meeting will be held on Monday 10th November at 7.30pm at the Old School Inn, Epworth.

This pretty girl is Jenny, a two year old Terrier Cross who is looking for her new home. Jenny is a lovely friendly girl, she loves people, and her tail is always wagging. She is ok with most other dogs and would be fine with older children, but not cats. If you are interested in adopting Jenny, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.

Local animal shelter Isle Rescue benefited from a Sponsored Dog Walk in Crowle on the 11th of October organised by Dog Groomer Lauren Drayton from Wet Noses Dog Spa and equestrian and pet supplier Lianne Taylor from The Feed Room. The Walk started from The Feed Room’s Shop at Oakley Equestrian Centre on the Godnow Road, and covered almost 8 miles, although there were two shorter routes. The turnout was great and almost all of the walkers completed the full walk with their dogs, ending back at the Café at the Equestrian Centre. The Walk raised a fantastic £320 for the Rescue, and everyone would like to thank Lauren and Lianne for organising the Walk and everyone at the Equestrian Centre for their hospitality- and delicious bacon sandwiches, and of course everyone who took part and all of the sponsors. The Walk has been such a success, we will be organising another one in the spring

The first half term at Wroot Travis C of E Primary has been full of fun and opportunity! This term's topic for our foundation stage and KS1 children has been ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson. Prior to their visit to the Baths Hall to watch this firm favourite being performed, the nursery children have had great fun painting the ‘gruffalo’ to go on the wall and even been spending time in his den! Recently, the whole school was brought to a standstill. What a morning this was! In the middle of our maths lessons cries of “Come quick, it’s hatching,” were squealed! Completely stunned we discovered everyone gathered around an incubator with great excitement. We couldn’t tell what was in there at first, but we soon found out. As we peered over the crowd we saw an egg with several holes in it and a tuft of fur sticking out! A small chick was hatching! Everyone was fighting just to catch even the smallest glimpse of the tiny creature in that egg! As it was our seventh year doing Macmillan we were very proud once again to be part of the ‘Biggest Coffee Morning.’ We were delighted that we raised lots of money because the people of the village, friends and lots of parents donated to help us treat cancer. Wroot School would like to thank all who generously gave to our chosen charity. Thanks to all who attended, we raised a massive £656.41. It’s amazing how much we can do when we put our mind to it! Night Driving Dear readers, The fundamental rule of Advanced Driving – you must be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear - this applies equally when driving at night. Away from street lighting, your vision will be limited to the range of your headlights and this varies massively between dipped and full-beam. Therefore, it makes sense that you slow down when you’re driving on dipped headlights. If you find your speed creeping up, remind yourself how dangerous it would be if you suddenly came across, a tyre carcass, a pedestrian, a stray animal or even a pallet off an HGV in your headlight beam, could you STOP! If your headlights illuminate 40 meters ahead, you’ll have just 1.5 seconds to react and stop at 60mph! Realistically, you’ll still be travelling at 40mph when you hit the obstruction!! Drive on full beam whenever possible but always think about other road users. Dip your lights as late as you possibly can, ensuring that you do not dazzle anyone and remembering that, at night, your lights give other road users the earliest warning of your presence. Clean your lights regularly as road grime quickly reduces their effectiveness and the distance you can see ahead clearly. If an approaching car forgets to dip, glance immediately towards the side of the road to avoid being temporarily blinded. On dual carriageways at 70mph you cover 31 metres (about 7 car lengths) per second, so even if it takes only five seconds for your vision to clear fully you’ll have covered a distance equivalent to one and a half football pitches! Advanced drivers know that driving in the dark isn’t all danger and drawbacks. Empty night-time roads make journeys quicker and less stressful: car headlights give early warning of their presence and the skilled driver can even use other vehicles headlight beams to work out where the road goes next. Don’t be complacent though, speed is more difficult to judge in the dark – especially approach speeds – so you should still take care and adhere to all the daylight driving rules. Dazzle from following vehicles can be just as blinding but the effect can usually be “minimised” using the dipping function on your interior mirror, which is now standard on most modern cars. Don’t forget to return the mirror to its “normal position” once the dazzle has subsided With practice, avoidance technique becomes habit. While such careless driving can be irritating, never stay on fullbeam yourself to retaliate. If you would like to take a Free Public Assessment Drive please contact me below.
