Welcome to the November issue of the Arrow! Christmas planning is well underway in this months issue. Plenty of local events to celebrate the festivities. Hirst Priory are holding their party nights and afternoon teas with Santa. Boston Park Farm have their annual grotto including a tractor ride. Book early to avoid disappointment. Epworth Old Rectory are holding their annual Christmas Fair on Saturday 17th November, along with their famous candlelight tours. We received a lovely phone call last month from a lady who lives in Isle who wants to remain anonymous. “I would like to say what a wonderful village we live in. Day to day I experience kindness of people in the village, from helping me cross the road to helping me with my shopping. It is a great place to live and the people really do make my life easier, I really do appreciate the help which is offered Enjoy the read and please note the deadline for the December issue is Wednesday 14th November for distribution by the 2nd December. If you are interested in advertising or simply emailing me some community news, please be in touch before the date.

Apples Crafts and Candlelight at Epworth Old Rectory The end of the season at the Rectory has arrived so quickly this year - where has the time gone? But we're not quite finished yet with so much for you to come and see and do before Christmas. First up is the Apple pressing Day with Apple of your Isle group, who will press your own apples to give you apple juice to take home and drink as fresh juice, or later after it may have passed through a process or two with additives such as sugar and yeast.. Then comes the Christmas Craft Fair on November 17th. Once again the stalls space is completely filled with a waiting list for spaces. It's a great opportunity to fill the present list with quality hand made craft items, all produced by local craftsmen and women. The variety of crafts and items for sale is totally brilliant. How about trying to guess the weight of the cake while you enjoy a cup of tea Call into the gift shop to see what we may have, or to book your place at the next event in our yearly calendar.
Epworth Old Rectory
Christmas Craft Fair Saturday 17th November 2018 10am—3.30pm Entrance £1.00
This one is not to be missed - the candlelit tours. We have limited space on these tours so you need to prebook now. See the house , fully furnished as normal following the crat Fair, but as the Wesleys would have experienced it, by candlelight. Your tour starts inthe Gift shop where you will be welcomed by a costumed guide, who will lead you, by the light of a lantern, to the front door where, after knocking for admission, you will be welcomed into the entrance hall, with a blazing fire to take away any chill, by even more costumed guides. You will then be taken all round the house with only candle light available and hear the story of all the happenings at the rectory while the Wesleys were resident there. You will them end your tour in Susanna's kitchen sitting around the table with another blazing fire while you chat over a cup of hot fruit punch, home made pork pie, sausage rolls, mince pies, fruit cake with butter and cheese,, and whatever else we choose to add to the menu. Although this ends our year for 2018, there will be so much more to look forward to for next year. 2019 is the 350th anniversary if the birth of Susanna Wesley, the mother of John and Charles, the founders of Methodism. Keep your eyes on these pages, and our Facebook page for more information as dates are finalised. Don't miss out on any of our great event days for the end of this year, and certainly not for next year's.

Our October meeting was our annual Harvest celebration and we welcomed guests from Owston Ferry WI and Crowle WI as well as friends and relatives of some of our members. This year our entertainment was ‘de Mowbray’s Musicke’, After the entertainment we were all in need of refreshments and the evening finished with our delicious Harvest buffet, courtesy of our members. The evening was a great success and we would like to thank Kate and Peter for providing us with an excellent and informative evening’s entertainment. In November, we continue with the Tudor theme; we will be having a demonstration of ‘Tudor Fare’.

Remembrance Sunday HAXEY 11.11.18 A debt we owe. This is our village celebration of remembrance on the centenary of the end of the First World War A remembrance of the courage and incredible sacrifice of so many who gave their lives so that others may live. A recognition and a salute to the bravery of all who have served in action. Many of whom have been wounded and all of whom have suffered the horrors of war. That we should not forget them, nor fail to learn from their experience, the great value of the peace for which they fought. The Soldier The road will be closed and a short service will begin at the War Memorial at 10.45am. Wreathes will be laid, silence will be held and the ‘Last Post’ played. Chapel A service of remembrance will be held at 11.30 am. at the Chapel. Because the Church service is an evening one, this service will be aimed at all ages and is especially for those who may not be able to attend the evening service and he celebration. The start of the service may be delayed to allow time for the congregation to walk from the Soldier. It will be followed by light refreshments. Church The Remembrance Service at Church will begin at 5.30pm. Uniformed groups will gather in the Church Hall and process to Church to present their flags at the altar in the usual way. ROYAL BRITISH LEGION The Roll of Honour will be read and wreathes will be laid afterwards at the War Memorial as usual. News from Haxey Church of England Primary School – part of the Trentside Federation We have received some fantastic news from the committee of the Haxey Hood. They have kindly donated £100 to the school, which is a wonderful gesture and is gratefully received. We plan to use this donation to purchase additional resources for the children to use in school. Thank you to the Haxey Hood committee for this gift. On the morning of 19th September we welcomed Tim Harrison – Director of Outreach all the way from the School of Chemistry at Bristol University and his colleague Dr Jonny Furze. They presented an inspirational and awesome science show entitled 'Gases in the Air'. The children in years 1-6 learned all about changes of state, physical and chemical changes and composition of the atmosphere. We had the opportunity to investigate the chemical properties of nitrogen and oxygen. Exciting demonstrations involved liquid nitrogen, oxygen foam, dry ice and plenty of explosions! It was enthralling and many children went away with the intention of becoming scientists. In particular, this turned out to be a big surprise for Lewis in year 2, as 'Grandad Tim' was presenting the show, which Lewis knew nothing about until he walked into assembly!! we will remember this visit for a long time to come, thanks to Tim and Dr Jonny travelling all the way up North, and for also visiting St Martin's to present to them and West Butterwick in the afternoon. On Monday 8th October all children visited St Nicholas' Church for our annual Harvest Festival. Mr Paul Taylor and Mrs Jenman officiated, with each class presenting a poem, performance of hymn around this subject. The church was packed and all enjoyed the service. The children were so well behaved and gave a polished performance. Children were asked to donate a tinned item, and an item of fresh produce. The fresh produce will be made into hampers and be given to senior members of our community, and the tinned items will be taken to The Forge Project in Scunthorpe, to be used either at the Forge in the meals they prepare daily, or will be sent to the food bank. Finally, one of our Lifestyle groups, 'The Haxey Helpers' have presented the money they raised as part of their project to Haxey Preschool. Oliver Thorpe, Ben Varnam, Dexter Spink, Ben Roberts and former pupil Charlie Thorpe spent some of their summer holidays doing a sponsored climb of MamTor, organised a village walk around Haxey and Westwoodside, organised a rock painting competition for children and provided refreshments at the end of year music show. They also cemented the painted rocks in a commemorative garden at the pre-school. They raised a total of £1171.50. Congratulations and well done boys! Special thanks to Mrs Varnam for being the parent contact. Photographed by The Wonderful years are: Oliver, Charlie, Ben R, Ben V and Dexter.

On Sunday 9th September a 9 year old pupil from Epworth Primary Academy walked the Humber Bridge both ways to raise money for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Lexi’s Legacy. Annabel Amy Malam told her Mum she would like to help children less fortunate than herself and decided she would walk the Humber Bridge both ways. Within a few days she had asked for sponsorship from local businesses and set up a Just Giving website. Within a few days she had raised £300 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and £187 for Lex’s Legacy. Although still recovering from tonsillitis she bravely finished her walk in style wearing only her socks as her trainers had rubbed her little toe!! Annabel is a very kind and caring little girl a real ‘star’ and her Mum, Sister and grandparents (who accompanied her) are so very proud of her. Annabel is now planning her next ‘venture’ !!
