Welcome to the November issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow! Apparently Christmas is just around the corner! However, we have Halloween to get over before that! I don’t remember Halloween being as ‘big’ as this when I was a child. Maybe we weren’t such party animals then. These days its any excuse to dress up and have a bit of a party! I’m all for it! Please remember behind a closed door there could be a vulnerable person who is scared to answer the door. If you want to be involved, leave a pumpkin or decoration out so children know they can call. This way everyone can have an enjoyable evening and those who don’t want to be disturbed can be left in peace. Talking about parties there are plenty of church hall rooms available to hire in the Isle. If you have an anniversary, celebration, birthday, a kids party, celebrations of christenings, naming ceremonies, etc. just some where to consider. Next time you have a special occasion to organise think LOCAL! For all new businesses check out our FB page or contact us via our website arrowpublications.co.uk to find our more about our offer for BLACK FRIDAY. Offer starts Friday 22nd November! Enjoy the read and please note the deadline for the December issue is Wednesday 13th November for distribution by Sunday 1st December. If you are interested in advertising or simply emailing me some community news, please be in touch before the date.

September has been a busy time at Haxey, with a number of classes working on projects with the Isle of Axholme & Hatfield Chase Landscape Partnership as part of our History, Geography and Science curriculums. Y1 visited Crowle Moors for a morning of minibeast hunting and pond dipping, and had a great time searching for the creatures, finding flies, spiders, woodlice, snails, slugs, beetles and daddy long legs. They also found many beautiful spiders’ webs on the plants. The pond dipping was great fun, as they caught creatures with a large net. The water scorpions were firm favourites, but they also caught hundreds of water mites, a tadpole and even a newt! Despite the rain everybody had a fantastic time. Year 2 took part in a super activity where we studied some ancient artefacts from the local area and then made our own clay tile. First we made the basic shape of the tile and then, with a different coloured clay, we carefully sculpted the Mowbray lion to fit on the top. It was a fabulous morning! Another exciting visit took place in Years 3 and 4. They brought with them lots of Stone Age artefacts that had been found in the local area. We learnt about how these would have been used in comparison to what we use today. Laura told us all about their archaeological dig, which uncovered a trackway dating back 5000 years! We talked about what the artefacts were used for in stone age times and then designed our own. Year 6 also organized another fantastic McMillan coffee morning and raised an amazing £390 – well done Year 6, and thank you to everyone who attended the morning or sent in cakes! Thank you to The Wonderful Years for the lovely photos.

Will fracking help us avoid climate breakdown? The fracking industry and the government tell us that gas is a low-carbon fuel which will bridge the gap between coal and renewables for electricity generation, and that home-produced shale gas has a smaller carbon footprint than gas imported from the Middle East because it avoids the carbon cost of shipping. There are problems with both of those assertions. It's true that at the point of combustion, gas emits less CO2 than coal per unit of electricity generated, but this is not the only source of greenhouse gas emissions from shale gas. Shale gas is mostly methane, a much more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2. In every part of the gas supply chain, methane escapes, through faulty equipment, human error and during routine procedures. Research in the US found that if the cumulative leakage rate exceeds about 3%, the global heating effect of this leaked unburned methane, added to the CO2 emitted when the gas is burnt, wipes out the claimed advantage of shale gas over coal. Data from the US fracking industry suggest that the leakage rate may be as high as 9% of total production, making shale gas worse for the climate than coal. Even if leakage can be kept below 3%, shale gas will only be better for the climate if the coal it "replaces" stays in the ground. In the real world, this does not happen - much the coal not burnt in the US as a result of their shale gas boom has been mined anyway and exported. The same applies to imported gas that would be "replaced" by shale gas - it will be extracted anyway and shipped somewhere else, possibly over an even greater distance. The UK is committed to closing all coal power stations by 2025; that programme is already well under way. Coal now accounts for less than 5% of UK electricity. In May we went two weeks without burning any coal at all at power stations. Even if things go well for UK fracking (and at the moment they are going really badly!), it will be at least five years before shale gas is available in significant quantities, by which time there won't be any coal power stations left to replace - gas will be the dirtiest fuel remaining. Even if globally we stopped burning coal today, there is enough oil and gas in already-operating fields to take us beyond safe climate limits. Adding new sources like shale gas is incompatible with keeping global heating below 1.5 degrees, the widely-accepted threshold beyond which climate breakdown is likely. The costs of renewables and energy storage have fallen much faster than anticipated and continue to fall. The concept of gas as a “bridge fuel” was based on the need for a reliable, economical energy source to cover the transition until renewables were a viable alternative. That time is now. Renewables plus storage are already cost-competitive with gas, and National Grid say they will be able to fully operate our electricity system with zero carbon by 2025. Investment should be going into renewables, not locking us into decades of new gas production that we cannot afford to burn. Gas is not a transition fuel - it has already become the new front line in the climate crisis. WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THIS? Get Informed! Google ‘fracking & health.’ Keep updated! 27th November 2019 Hirst Priory on Fire at Peaky Blinders Night Hirst Priory, the Isle of Axholmes favourite wedding and events venue really warmed things up at their Peaky Blinders themed party night with a sensational fire breathing act lighting up the scene as guests arrived in 1920’s costume for a night of fun and mischief. It wasn’t the only eye opener as “Linzie Belle and the Cherry Bombs” raised temperatures even higher later in the evening when they put down their burning torches to perform a mesmerising burlesque dance routine to the Peaky Blinders theme tune “Red Right Hand”. The whole event took place in a giant three hat tipi on the Hirst Priory lawn complete with log fire pit creating a wonderfully authentic atmosphere. Everyone who attended the event had dressed in Peaky inspired style and there was no shortage of new recruits to the Shelby family clan. Prizes were awarded for the best costume on the night and went to an excellent impersonation of Alfie Solomon and a beautifully sparkling silver flapper outfit. The band Koostix performed some epic in character musical sets to keep the dance floor full by order of the Peaky Blinders. It was a great theme night event and drew visitors from all around the local area and beyond.

NEW BOOK ON NEWELL’S ENGINEERING WORKS – LAUNCH AND SIGNING Ernest Newell’s influence on Misterton has been likened to that of the Lever Brothers at Port Sunlight and Titus Salt at Saltaire. Local historian, David Seymour, has written a book about Newell’s Engineering Works. The book will be launched on Saturday 9 November at a book-signing at Misterton Library from 10.00am to 12 noon. For over 100 years, the Newell’s Engineering Works was the lifeblood of the village, providing employment for over 300 people with generations of families working there. The company produced heavy machinery, which was exported all over the world for varied uses: from the cement industry to supporting the war effort. David’s book covers the history of the company from its beginnings in the 1890s to its final demise in the early years of this century. Only 100 books will be printed, costing £15. To place pre-publication orders, contact David by e-mail on seymoursam@hotmail.com, or ring 01427 890936 or 07952 544 604.
Christmas Gifts at Epworth Old Rectory We're almost at the end of a fantastic celebratory season here at the Rectory. Susanna's 350th birthday has been well and truly celebrated with a whole range of exciting community events. We're coming to the end of our normal season of opening to visitors to the museum, but work continues through the winter with a number of projects in the pipeline. Our final event before Christmas is the annual Craft Fair which continues to go from strength to strength, so much so that we could easily have another dozen or so stalls if we had the space. As it is, we are fully booked up with a fabulous range of stalls, all producing quality items for Christmas gifts for family and friends. All will be hand made by gifted crafters, and we'll have our usual tombola stall, refreshments with home made cakes and mince pies, seasonal music and a warm welcome for all comers. We look forward to seeing you all, so do call into the shop for a chat and browse as well as the stalls in the house. And don't forget to ask for information on how to volunteer to join our team if you have a half day to spare. Full training and support provided for all roles. Do ask us we'd love you to join us, or call 01427 872268 and speak to Gillian.
CHRISTMAS FAIR AND CRAFT MARKET Santa will make his first appearance in the village this winter when he sets up his grotto at a charity Christmas fair and craft market. The event is on Sunday 10 November at Misterton Fire Station from 10.30am to 2.30pm. The event is in aid of Prostate Cancer and Breast Cancer charities, and The Fire Fighters Charity.
Dozens of stalls will include hand-made crafts and cards, children’s books, handbags, watches, scarves, and gloves. In addition, there is a raffle and tombola. Home-made cakes will be on sale and a range of refreshments

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE AWARDS 2019 22 children completed the Summer Reading Challenge this year - reading at least 6 books during the summer holiday - and were presented with their certificates and medals this month (Saturday 21 September) at Misterton Library. Congratulations to them all! Those able to attend and pick up their certificates - and stay for the party afterwards - are pictured with (back row from left) Lynn Whitehead, Library Volunteer; Cllr Peter Marsden, Chair of Misterton Parish Council; and Cllr Hazel Brand, District/Parish Councillor. Presenting the awards, Cllr Brand gave some good news from Misterton Primary School: pupils at Key Stage 1 and 2 had both done exceptionally well in reading. KS1 was better than the average for the county, and KS2 was better than the average of both county and England. Both Cllr Marsden and Cllr Brand thanked the Library volunteers, who organised the event and help to keep the Library open.
CHILDREN LEARN ABOUT PLASTIC POLLUTION North Notts Lions have been presenting local schools with story books about marine life that face dangers from plastic in the sea. Pictured receiving the books at Misterton Primary & Nursery School are (from left) Headteacher, Jane Cappleman-Jackson, Tom Allen representing the Lions, and teacher, Andrew Green, with Year 5 pupils. Ms Cappleman-Jackson thanked the Lions: “Our thanks and appreciation go to North Notts Lions for their kind gift of books, which focus on plastics in the environment. The children at Misterton Primary voiced their concerns about plastic pollution in the summer and are now engaged in research on it, and recycling. The Lions continue to enjoy a positive relationship with such a caring and proactive school as Misterton and they support wholeheartedly the work staff are doing in educating youngsters to care for the environment.
