Welcome to the November issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow What a strange year up to press, as I am writing this it appears the pandemic is reaching a peak and bizarrely it’s a postcode lottery to which tier you are in! Bonfires are cancelled, we wont be experiencing the traditional firework display. We have no idea what will happen this Christmas, if we can share it with our loved ones, give them a cuddle or even welcome the New Year in with friends and family. Its all a guessing game! Whatever our plans we need to keep safe and enjoy and make the most of what we have. I am sure it will all be a distant memory in 2021. Lindsey Lodge has launched its #weneedyou Christmas Care Appeal to enable local people to provide much-needed support from the comfort and safety of their own homes. This year due to Covid-19, nearly everything has had to be put on hold and they are facing a glaring gap in their proposed income. The Christmas Care appeal provides a number of ways for you to still get involved - whether it’s buying a real Christmas tree from Lindsey Lodge, playing our Superdraw or simply shopping at one of our stores. Every penny really does make a difference. The deadline for the December issue is Thursday 12th November for delivery by Sunday 28th November.. Enjoy the read and keep safe!

Community News St Nicholas Parish Church Haxey Celebrates Harvest Festival Harvest festival in the Anglican church dates back to early Victorian times and in the farming community of the Isle villages it was a time of lavish decoration in church, piles of produce to be shared out to the needy and after Evensong, a hearty Harvest Supper. Many of us resident in Haxey and Westwoodside enjoy watching the fields change through the seasons but have little connection to the work that takes place there. But Harvest is symbolic of the labour it takes to produce our food, and this year especially we have been thankful to all involved in providing us with that food. Harvest festival in Church is primarily to thank God for the basic essentials of life; having these and so much more can make us complacent but during the pandemic we have all learned again to be grateful for essentials that in other years we have taken for granted. This year we chose to celebrate simply: some beautiful floral focal points, jars of pretty posies to be shared with members of the congregation who are housebound or ill, and a collection of groceries for the needy.
Children from the Bambi toddler group made a big poster for the church porch, some from the Youth group decorated labels for the posy jars and children from the Saturday Harvest Workshop kindly lent us some of their harvest craft to display. Haxey school pupils and members of the congregation brought in bags of groceries to symbolise Harvest Supper to be shared with others. These donations were taken to The Forge project in Scunthorpe where volunteers provide takeaway meals to the homeless.
St Nicholas Church Haxey 10.45am We meet every Sunday for Holy Communion (taken in one kind). We follow the required instructions to wear masks, sanitise our hands on entry and social distance! DONCASTER MOVIEMAKERS Unfortunately our 2019/2020 programme was suspended at the end of February. However since then, members have been sharing films digitally. Between Christmas and the suspension there were successful meetings. Our member Fabio Bezoari gave us an interesting and informative presentation on what he has learnt during many years of making beautiful films. Our Music Video Competition was won by Pete Bonsall with his film showing historic telephone equipment. The Annual Competition was won by Ross Adgar with his study of the work of the local impressionist artist Andrew Farmer. We also held an evening where members showed their films based on the theme of autumn and an evening where we were joined by Doncaster Naturalist Society where we both showed our Wildlife films and Photographs. We are a group of people interested in making or just watching amateur films on our large screen. If you have similar interests, please contact us. At this stage future meetings are being reviewed, but we normally meet Wednesday evenings from September until April please check our website for details or contact 07765715422.

After 30 years in Haxey a fond farewell to pastures new! On starting up the Arrow I was introduced to Eddie and Pam Exton by their daughter Sarah. Her 2 children delivered the Arrow for many years. Now Sam is 23 and Beck is 22, and they have both successfully completed University. How time flies! The amazing British fighter aircraft stood proud in the back garden of the Exton’s family home in Haxey for more than 30 years! The English Electric lightning aircraft served as an interceptor during the 1960’s, the 1979’s and into the lats 1980’s I have vivid memories of meeting Eddie and Pam, who I must say both fabulous characters and the kindest of people! Eddie was certainly the proudest man, showing me around the aircraft with such passion. His son Andrew, a plane enthusiast had persuaded his dad to bring the aircraft home. Not something everyone has in their back garden! The aircraft was certainly the talking point of the village for all who passed whilst walking on the lane from the Nooking to near the Church In Haxey, or from Church Street up to the back lane. Sadly the beautiful aircraft as left for her new home, where she will be restored to her former glory. A very emotional day for the family, but in the future hopefully they will see her again! Thank you for the memory! Carolyn Grant

MACMILLAN TAKE-AWAY COFFEE MORNING BIG THANK YOU A BIG THANK YOU to all who contributed to the amazing sum of £400, in the form of donations and purchases of the ‘takeaway coffee morning in a bag’, held in my garage due to the cold wind (see photo), as an alternative to the usual BIG COFFEE MORNING in the Imperial Hall. In spite of the weather visitors, who came in ones and twos (observing the necessary social distancing rules) found the time to stop on the drive to chat, making my day very sociable, a real treat after so much isolation. THANKS also to those who donated raffle prizes, including the usual beautiful, big fruit basket form Gravel’s greengrocers, and the generous contributions from Pauline Davies’ plant sales and her own fundraising. On the same night the Epworth and Isle of Axholme Rotary Club’s now monthly Facebook quiz raised £185 (so far) for Macmillan. Many thanks to Val Hackney for setting the questions, and Nick and Sue for putting them on their Facebook page, and of course to everyone who took part and donated. In Epworth there has been a BIG COFFEE MORNING every September for many years, with last year’s raising over £1000. All money from these events goes directly to the Scunthorpe branch, where it is used to fund Macmillan Nurses, Support centres at Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Goole hospitals, equipment needed for patients etc. Macmillan Cancer Support is just one of the many charities facing the challenge of fundraising this year with the limit on social gatherings, so your support is really appreciated. I would also like to add my personal THANK YOU to all the local businesses who have supported so many of us through this difficult year. Regular home deliveries from Gravel’s, Parkin’s Butchers, Albion Bakers were a godsend and thanks to Weswoodside Plants our garden and hanging baskets have looked really lovely. Thanks, too, to all the other local businesses delivering in the area.
Lindsey Lodge is inviting people across North Lincolnshire to Light up a Life and remember a lost loved one. The service, which is open to anyone who has lost someone, will be held virtually on Friday 4 December and will be live streamed from the Hospice memorial garden. Lindsey Lodge Chief Executive Karen Griffiths said: “Christmas can be a very difficult time for anyone who has lost a loved one, particularly this year, which has been incredibly challenging for everyone. She added: “As we enter the festive season, we are reaching out to our local community and inviting them to join us in our Light up a Life activities. “Our service this year will be held virtually and we are aiming to capture the very special essence of Light up a Life, to give people the opportunity to honour those they have lost in a safe and socially distanced live ceremony in the comfort of their own home.” Lindsey Lodge’s live service will take place via Facebook live on Friday 4 December, where the trees will be lit. Each light represents a life, and will remain lit throughout the Christmas period. Karen added: “Once people have dedicated a light, they will receive two tree decorations, one to hang on of our trees in our memorial garden throughout the month of December. “The second decoration can be used to decorate trees at home. We’re encouraging people to turn on their Christmas lights at home simultaneously with the lighting of the Hospice tree.” https://www.lindseylodgehospice.org.uk/news/light-up-a-life-celebrations-to-continue/

Epworth Open Garden Presentation Following quite a long delay, due to Coronavirus restrictions, The participants in the successful Epworth Open Gardens weekend on 11th and 12th of July, this year were presented with the certificates from Lindsey Lodge Hospice with a note of how much the five participating gardens had raised with their combined efforts. It has taken this extended time because many of the admin staff at the Hospice were furloughed prior to the open gardens weekend, and have only recently been allowed back to work. During the lockdown period Lindsey Lodge was unable to open its charity shops, one of its main income streams, so were grateful for the donation from the open gardens, which totalled ÂŁ664-52. Had we not just been re-emerging from lockdown and people still afraid to venture forth the sum would probably have been considerably larger. However it was still a worthwhile donation. There were five participating gardens, fewer than previous years of course, for the same reasons as there were limited numbers of visitors. Those who did visit were suitably impressed with the precautions taken to ensure their safety, and very impressed with the gardens themselves. Those visitors deserve a vote of thanks for helping to raise that sum, as do the five garden participants, who were Epworth Old Rectory and Wesley Memorial Church. Both of these gardens were unmanned over the weekend. However the other three were ably manned by their owners, Ms G Ergul with her brother Andrew Hackney, Mr and Mrs R Fish and Mr and Mrs G Fordham, with some assistance from their grand daughter Robyn Edwards. Mrs Fordham presented the certificates to the other participants and added her thanks for their efforts. Maybe, sometime in the future when the present pandemic is over Epworth will repeat the experience and gain even more support for the Hospice. If we do, I'm certain anyone coming along will be made to feel as welcome as they did on that weekend in July 2020. Cath Fordham
