At Misterton Primary and Nursery the school has united to remember and celebrate the Queen’s life at the announcement of her death. The children remembered her time with Paddington Bear during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations and in classes time was given talking about their feelings and memories. At Misterton Primary being kind is part of everyday life and children knew there would be many feelings during this time and we talked about how your feelings are your and there is no right or wrong way to feel during difficult times. The School Council gained everyone’s ideas from each class and met with Mrs White to share these. The children very much want a permanent sculpture, art work to celebrate the Queen’s reign. We are currently looking for funding streams to get this started. All classes are working on their own art work and poetry which will be displayed in the main corridor and this has sparked work at home for some children and the poetry shared at this point has been incredibly moving. In assembly this week, one child commented that, ‘The Queen’s smile lit up the country and the world.’ Looking to the future, the children have asked for a street party at the time of King Charles coronation, Misterton Primary loves a street party and this will be planned nearer the time. A competition for a Worry Box has been judged by our Catering Team and the winning classes are Class 3 and 5. Each class has a worry box for any child who feels they cannot verbally share a worry. By writing or drawing a worry they can use this to prompt that conversation with any adult they feel happy to talk to about a worry. This works alongside our school policies which can be found on the schools website. The winning classes are having jam sandwiches linking with the Queen’s favourite daily sandwich.

Epworth and District Flower Club The next meeting of the Flower Club will be the Open Evening on 14th November. This is an evening not to be missed and will be held in the hall of South Axholme Academy. This year Jonathan Moseley, an international demonstrator, will entertain with his “Festive Floral Fabulousness”. The title alone suggests an exciting evening. Tickets are available from any Flower Club member or by phoning Celia Jones on 07784 421273. Jonathan also will be bringing his own Christmas sales table. On Monday, 10th October members sat patiently at their Autumn Workshop while Jo Smith, a NAFAS demonstrator, began to demonstrate. Everyone had gathered their seedheads, flowers and grasses and sat with their copper wreath ring and straw and other necessities on the tables in front of them. Jo demonstrated how to tightly cover the ring with the straw and then inserted 7 plastic test tubes around the circle. Into these she explained the sort and size of flowers, grasses and seasonal materials necessary to make a very original display. The test tubes formed “legs” to lift the ring enabling it to be used as a table decoration. Jo used a variety of flowers and tiny foliage and explained how the members could add any seasonal materials of individual choice to cover the straw as appropriate. Her result was very attractive and she made the whole exercise look simple. The members began, each creating a unique decoration as there was an enormous variety of materials. There was a wonderful buzz of conversation as the evening progressed and Jo helped and encouraged and finally there were about 27 amazingly different arrangements. The evening concluded with refreshments and clearing up! There was an amount of straw on the floor of St Andrew’s Church, but everyone departed after an interesting evening anticipating another interesting evening on November 14th in South Axholme school where their only involvement would be applause!

1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts – Autumn 2022 Last weekend we returned to Caistor for our “Back to Basics” camp. In true adventure style, we filled a weekend with survival skills and lots of fun. Always helped by sunny weather and great food! Friday night we put up tents, collected wood, build wood stores and then stopped for hot chocolate and celebratory birthday cake. After a good night sleep, we lit our open fires and started cooking. Our menus included pancakes and omelettes for breakfast, toasties and jacket potatoes. During the day we had to keep our fires lit, just the right temperature for our cooking and well stocked. This meant we had to use knives to feather kindling, axes to chop firewood and basically work as a team throughout! We also set ourselves the challenge of building some camp gadgets using wood and rope (and testing our knots and lashing skills) - most groups chose a washing up stand, and a bin. One inventive patrol made a rope ladder, exercise equipment like at a gym and a rope swing. We also had a scavenger hunt and some free time games. After tea, again cooked on open fires, we cleared up and headed down for the campfire. An impressive fire, smores and many songs and jokes. Some hide and seek in the dark before supper and then bed. Sunday, we had cooked breakfast followed by Flag break and “thought for the day”. We filled our day with some other competitions – art in nature, and to build a rope bridge to hold the whole team off the floor. Finally, cooked lunch, then dismantle fires and wood piles, strike camp and load the van. Phew! What a weekend. Upcoming events: Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award and Christmas party. All sections (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) all restart after half term on Monday 31st October 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts) at the Westwoodside Village Hall. All enquiries about Scouts should go to Gregor on: gagibb79@aol.com, and Cub enquiries should go to Matthieu at: matthieu_maloigne@mentor.com
Remember, we are s ll looking to recruit Beavers leaders so we can restart this sec on. Please get in touch if this is something you could help with.
