ISLE OF AXHOLME - SOUTH POLICE REPORT CONTACT DETAILS:PC Mark Raper email – mark.raper@humberside.pnn.police.uk PCSO Sue Fahy email – susan.fahy@humberside.pnn.police.uk PCSO Stewart Pearson email – stewart.pearson@humberside.pnn.police.uk Neighbourhood Policing Priorities as agreed by the Neighbourhood Action Team (meeting 2015):- Full details can be viewed on www.humberside.police.uk Ongoing Issues Horse issues around the South area of the Isle = Reports have been received regarding various issues surrounding horses. Firstly Humberside Police are receiving calls regarding animals straying onto public highways and being a danger not only to themselves but to other road users such as car drivers. Secondly concerns have been raised regarding the number of horses that are appearing in our area and appear to be unfed and neglected. All agencies including the Police and the Local Council are working together to deal with this matter. Dog Fouling on the South area of the Isle = Since the Safer Neighbourhood Team held their “clean up” day regarding this issue it has been noted that the area is still being subject of this issue and dog owners are still acting irresponsibly in not picking up their animal’s waste. Not only does this make the area unpleasant to walk in but there are numerous health issues highlighted. PLEASE IF YOU ARE A DOG OWNER PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR ANIMAL. Please note that Community Wardens will be in place by Christmas to help tackle this issue. Parking Issues at Haxey and Westwoodside = Issues are still continuing regarding vehicles causing annoyance and obstruction in the above villages. Please as a car owner consider where you are parking and consider other road users. It is intended that the training of New Community Wardens will take place before Christmas and they will help with this issue. Information Poaching - The countryside may look peaceful and idyllic but farmers/landowners still have the problem of poaching which Humberside Police take seriously. Poaching is the illegal trapping of game or fish on private or public land. We continue to liaise with farmers/landowners regarding any problems that they encounter and to identify where offences and offenders are committing these acts. Due to the lighter nights and improving weather, calls for this will be on the increase, so Please if anyone sees anything of concern report it on 101. Motoring Advice – to make all motorists aware of the up and coming festive season please be responsible while in control of your vehicle DON’T Drink and Drive or use your mobile phone, and please wear your seatbelt. Don’t risk your life, those of your passengers and other road users. Carry out winter checks on your vehicle ensure the fluids are all at the right levels the tyres are in good condition and all the vehicle lights are working correctly. Do not leave your car unattended to warm up on the driveway as this clearly gives a message of “STEAL ME” and will often not be covered by your insurance. Child Safety – can parents speak to their children about road safety and ensure that their children are wearing reflective/light coloured items so they can be seen on the dark evenings *As always our non-emergency number is 101, and in an emergency please dial 999 regards 6 Please mention “The Arrow” responding to advertisements Mark, Suewhen and Stewart*.

THE W.W.2 DIARY OF CLIFFORD SPENCER 1764164 Gunner. SPENCER Clifford 27 L.A.A. (Light Ack Ack) Regt, R.A. (Royal Artillery) (107 Bty. (Battery)) Adapted & edited for publication by Anthony E. Catherall

Aug. 14th. I get inoculated on August 16th. I was lucky to get a battle dress and trousers. Debates started. Some good speakers, the first one was married versus single, married won the vote. The next is the big shop out doing the small one, the answer was no. Next is travelling more learning than reading. I will carry on day by day now when possible in diary form. Aug. 18th. A very unpleasant start, four officers attempted to escape, and are fired on. One killed, one wounded, the other two are caught. A collection is made for a wreath. Parcels are one between four twice a week. Another inoculation, this time I get stuck in the seat, that’s the first one I’ve had there. That’s the worse night I think I ever had in my life, my back, head, and legs all ache, Aug. 19th. can’t lay, down or sit for long. I’m much better tonight. Len is like me. Bill and Les have done all the little jobs that have to be done. This is what we want; some letters and cards have just come in, to send home, to my darling Mary, this is the third, all that I’ve had. Make a pudding, made of bread, stewed apples, Aug 20th. butter and milk, was OK. Boxing show tonight, good show. Heard rumour Aug. 21st. that France has been invaded, hope its true and let’s get out of this hole. Debate, subject is the cinema harmful to the child’s Aug. 22nd. Julie and Mary 1941 mind. Vote (No). rd. Coffee in bed. Roll call 8 am. 10-1 pm, I print some choruses out for later services. Aug. 23 Meat for dinner. 9.30. pm. Wonder what you are doing darling. How I miss you these times, have a lovely service, it’s now thundering and lightening. The Officer that was wounded has died today; some poor wives and mothers’ hearts will be broken. I am now going to bed and dream of my two precious darlings, God bless you both. Have hair cut, but not all off this time, have a good Aug. 24th. wash, and again debugged. Everybody in the camp has lice or fleas, and can’t get rid of them. Thunder and lightning, downpour of rain reminds me Aug. 25th. of England. First time I’ve seen rain through windows since I left home. Have a bread pudding POW news, what tripe! Good boxing show. Jock judged Aug. 26th. best fight of the night. More letters and cards come in, send one to Mary and Mother. Wonder when I’ll get one? Our little darling Julie’s birthday, God Bless her. All I Aug. 27th. can send this time is love and kisses. Mail has started to come in from England. Peach issue has come in, 3 each — Moorish. Debate. Should capital punishment be abolished (vote Aug. 28th. no) Wash shirt. Saturday seven years ago today, but not Aug. 29th. the date, was the happiest day of my life when I married the best girl in the world. How different was that day to this, and how you will be thinking about it my love, I can picture that day, as if it was CLIFFORD & MARY 31 AUGUST 1935 18 and Please “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements yesterday, what mention happy days we have had since darling. WROOT TRAVIS CHARITY CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL NEWS We had a very successful Macmillan Coffee Morning on 25th September. Our Key Stage Two children organised everything from advertising to running stalls. Entertainment was provided by The South Axholme Wind Band. Parents and other members of the community were very supportive. I would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who was involved in any way – whether you baked, donated prizes or were there on the day. We raised £622.80. Our Foundation Stage children have been finding out about themselves. They have done some beautiful self portraits and have investigated their family trees. In Key Stage One most of their work has been based around the story ‘Tyrannosaurus Drip’. They have drawn lots of pictures and are now writing their own stories. Our Key Stage Two children are investigating the Egyptians. They have made papyrus and are busy trying to work out whether Tutankhamen was killed. We have also been busy with many sporting activities including two at South Axholme. Year 3 took part in the Multi Skills Festival and Year 5 & 6 in High Five Netball Coaching. In the summer our KS2 children made a model that was displayed in an exhibition as part of the 800th anniversary celebrations to commemorate the sealing of Magna Carta. On 1st October we were presented with a framed picture of our work by the committee of the Epworth Magna Carta 800 Society to say thank you. (photo)

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS West Butterwick and St Martin’s (Owston Ferry) C of E Primary Schools

We have now held our Harvest Festivals at St Martin’s and St Mary’s and these were lovely services. Thank you to all concerned for the generous Harvest gifts. The Forge Charity and local food bank have received the non-perishables and the proceeds from the perishable items auction at St Martin’s Church are in support of aid for Syrian refugees. To date this term, both schools continue to enjoy a wide range of sporting opportunities and successes both in-school and out-of school in hockey, football and netball, to name but a few! The children are also enjoying their ‘domestic science’ lessons and baking sessions. St Martin’s Foundation Stage pupils recently made ‘bread hedgehogs’! West Butterwick ‘chefs’ have prepared delicious apple crumble and sausage rolls. The new football kit for St Martin’s is very smart and both schools have also enjoyed participating in Tag Rugby, Infant Dodgeball and Netball. Unfortunately, St Martin’s lost to Misterton Primary school at a recent football match, but everyone very much enjoyed the opportunity to play this fixture – the team players are always very ‘evaluative’ of their performance in the match and see the experience as ‘developmental’ – great sportsmanship skills! Messy Church took place in St Martin’s School on Wednesday 30th September with a wide variety of activities on offer for pupils of all ages, including cake-decorating and salt dough model-making with a harvest theme. Thank you to our church and community members who ran this – the children really enjoyed it! St Martin’s and West Butterwick pupils continue to grow crops as part of their ‘We Can Grow’ project – there is a promising lot of potatoes coming on nicely at West Butterwick at the moment! We now have confirmation of the St Martin’s School Councillors (the West Butterwick School Council was confirmed in last month’s ‘School News’). The following pupils were elected by their colleagues to serve on the School Council this year :- Ava (Year 1), Maisie (Year 2), Molly (Year 3), Keira (Y4), Hannah (Year 5), Byron (Year 6) and Jackson (Year 6). St Martin’s Councillors have already decided there is a need to update some of the breaktime equipment so they are getting on with putting an order together. Looking ahead, St Martin’s is preparing for its Patronal Service and Service of Remembrance on 13th November. West Butterwick’s ‘Lighting the Candle’ Pupil Worship Leaders are to lead Community Worship on Friday 27th November (they will be re-telling and exploring the Bible Story of Zaccheaus)

Family Picnic This was held back in September as an opportunity for parents and careers to meet their child's new teacher in an informal setting. As you can see it was well supported, with the sun on our side! The children, siblings, parents and friends really enjoyed themselves. Thanks to all who supported us. Harvest Festival We held our annual Harvest Festival on 28th September at St Nicholas. The church was packed to the rafters with parents and friends of the school, many having to stand at the back of the church in order to catch a glimpse of the children's contributing performances depicting the meaning of harvest. There were hymns, poems, rhymes, and songs providing a fitting tribute to the hard work the children had put into their performances. It was enjoyed by all, with fresh produce donated by pupils distributed amongst those within the community, and packets and tins sent to The Forge food bank in Scunthorpe for the most needy. Thanks as usual to Rev Green for his welcome and service in church. Children in Need School joined in 'the Pudsey spirit' donning their finest superhero costumes to school in exchange for a donation to this fabulous cause. This went down a treat and raised much needed funds for those not as lucky as us. Look out for photos in next month's edition of The Arrow. Disco time! Prior to the half term break the PTFA held a disco. They are currently raising funds to furnish our outdoor learning area with seating to further enhance the children's learning. If there are any friendly joiners out there who would be willing to help, donate time or materials for our project we could they please get in touch with school, we'd appreciate any contributions! The PTFA are busy 'behind the scenes' organising events for Christmas, including Christmas cards, printed tea towels and bags, winter Fayre and the ever popular Santa's grotto. The PTFA are always on the hunt for raffle prizes, unwanted gifts and good quality second hand items for our winter Fayre, please drop any you can donate off at school marked for the PTFA's attention. Monies raised do make a massive difference to the children's learning journey, and in the past have funded out door play equipment, 'meet an author' day and the annual pantomime. 38 school Please mention “The Arrow when responding to advertisements

Baking Club This has been very popular with years 2 and 3 being given the first term to participate in this after school club. The children have been embracing the spirit of The Great British Bake Off and have whipped up culinary delights including sausage rolls and apple crumble. Massive thanks to staff who give up their time to run this club, and to Nana Cakes who over sees the delicious creations. Bell Ringing Mrs Coley recently visited St Nicholas Church with some of the children as part of some of the church bells' 500 year birthday. The children were given the opportunity to try out bell ringing themselves, to varying levels of success! Thank you to the bell ringers who took time to display the required skills to the children, and to parents who helped out. They thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the church and wish the bells a very happy birthday.

This adorable boy is Max, a four year old roughcoated Jack Russell Terrier. Max is a really friendly, affectionate dog who is happy to cuddle on the sofa with you and keep you company. Typical of the breed he is a busy, energetic boy who needs an active home with a garden to run around in. He is ok with some other dogs but not cats, so he would be best as an only pet. Older children only. Max is neutered and fully vaccinated. If you are interested in meeting Max, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705
