Men’s Society hears of Battle of The Somme A talk entitled The Somme was given when some 40-plus members of the Epworth Men’s Society held their first meeting - an annual dinner at the town’s Red Lion Hotel - to start their 2016 to 2017 season. The talk was given by Bob Fish, a former head teacher at an Isle school and an amateur historian, who said that World War 1 had been a consuming passion of his since he was a little boy. “The British military knew there would be heavy losses for what was know as ‘the big push’ in 1916 - the planning for which had started late in 1915,” said Mr Fish. It turned out to be the biggest loss of men the British and Commonwealth troops suffered in a single day, with some 60,000 men being killed, injured or taken prisoner, he explained. Mr Fish said that there had been a bombardment but this had failed to destroy the German barbed wire ahead of their trenches and, in addition, a third of all the shells fired turned out to be duds. He explained that about 60 percent of all British and Commonwealth officers were killed on the first day of battle, which itself went on for four-and-a-half months. “Some 40 men from the Isle died during this time, which saw more than a million men from both sides lose their lives,” said Mr Fish. The Society holds monthly meetings from now through to May 2017 and anyone interested in finding our more is asked to call Ken Bickerstaff on (01427) 872288

Members of Epworth and District Flower Club who attended
the October meeting, were given a very polished presentation by designers, Alison Doxley and Stephen Welch, who together created a Gold Medal winning garden at Chelsea Flower Show, earlier this year. We were privileged to be given this fantastic talk about the designers journey through the concept, planning and making of their garden. Alison, an English Master florist and Stephen a chartered Landscape Architect, who have been lifelong friends, decided it was now or never to " have a go at Chelsea", as they both turn fifty. Having entitled the garden " the Garden Bed ", they wanted Chelsea visitors to view their garden through the eyes of a hospice patient. To show how being wheeled out into a comforting outdoor space can lift the spirits and promote a sense of calm and well being. The design fitted the brief perfectly for Chelsea, the theme being " Health, Happiness and Horticulture" . We were taken through the highs and lows of creating a garden by quality slides and photographs and a relaxed , informal narrative with lots of fun and laughter. Alison and Steve are to be congratulated on their presentation as well as their garden and Gold Medal. Flower club is to give a donation to Lindsey Lodge Hospice. The November meeting is the annual Open Evening. " Christmas is Coming" by Kevin Hara. Tickets are £8, including light, seasonal refreshments are on sale now.
The November meeting of the West Butterwick and District Gardening Club takes place on Monday
7th November at West Butterwick Village Hall at 7.30 pm. The speaker is Stella Exley. Her talk is about Setting Up hare Spring Cottage Plants. Everyone is welcome – all ages and all levels of gardener Members £2, non members £3. The next meeting is 5th December with Gail Summerfield and her subject is ‘The Winter Garden’

Haxey Church of England Primary School’s Macmillan Coffee Morning On Friday the 7th October, Haxey Church of England Primary School hosted a Macmillan coffee morning. This event was organised by the fabulous Year 6 students. The Year 6 class were a fantastic team: they worked extremely well with each other. They were amazing at washing up, chatting, serving and smiling. We were overwhelmed with the generosity shown by parents and pupils in donating the enormous number of delicious cakes, buns, cupcakes and truffles. The coffee morning was jam-packed, every guest had a slice of cake and a drink, with most buying extra. The atmosphere inside the hall was fantastic. Every pupil brought their money to purchase a cake and offer donations. Every adult who attended said, “Wow that was just brilliant!” My relatives enjoyed the morning, they would happily come again. This year was a new school record. We raised a whopping amount
of…….
£407.06!!!!!!
We want to say a huge THANK YOU to all who donated, bought and came to eat our cakes. By Joseph

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust On Thursday November
3rd we will have Tim Newbery giving a talk entitled How to Read the Weather. Our weather can be so varied that we regularly listen to the weather forecast to help us decide what we do that day, from should we take an umbrella or do we need sun screen to planning outdoor activities. What signs should we look for when we are out and about apart from the obvious, such as black clouds? Come along and find out, this should be of interest to everyone.
On Thursday December 1st we will be having our annual members photographic evening which is always very popular. Anyone can bring along a small selection of photographs on any subject and share these with everyone so we have a very varied night of entertainment. You don't have to be a brilliant photographer so don't be shy. Make a note of the date in your diary and check through those pictures in readiness. Please let Tony Lee know in advance if you wish to show your images so that we can arrange the order. Tel. 01427 753831 Seasonal refreshments will also be available. Dog attacks are a significant hazard faced by postmen and women on a daily basis. On average around 9 postmen and women a day are attacked by dogs across the UK, some leading to a permanent disabling injury. The number of attacks has risen by 8 per cent nationally since 2012* and still remains unacceptably high and we are committed to driving this down further. Every dog attack on one of our postmen or women is one dog attack too many. These attacks rise during the school holidays and in the summer months when parents and children are at home and dogs are sometimes allowed unsupervised in the garden, or out onto the street without restraints. Members of Parliament, councillors, political activists and other campaigners are also at risk from dog attacks when out canvassing and leafleting in their local areas. In a survey of Members of Parliament, Royal Mail heard from more than 50 MPs who have personal experiences of dog attacks. op Tips for Dog Owners Even the most lovable dog can be a danger to postal staff. Dogs are territorial by nature and if they feel they need to protect their family, they can become unpredictable. Here are some ideas to help your postman deliver your post in safety:
Ensure your dog is out of the way before the
postman or woman arrives. Place your pet in the back garden or a faraway room.
If you have a back garden, please close off the
access, in case your dog could get round to the front when the postman calls.
Dog attacks can happen when you’ve opened the
door to sign for an item. Please keep your dog in another room before answering the door and make sure children don’t open the door, as dogs can push by them and attack.
Give your dog some food or a toy to occupy them while your mail is being delivered
Wait 10 minutes after your mail has arrived to let
your pet back into your hallway. Keep everything as calm and low-key as possible.
If your dog likes to attack your mail consider
installing a wire letter receptacle. It will protect your post, and your postman’s fingers If it’s not practical for you to keep your dog away from a postman delivering your mail, please consider fitting a secure mailbox on the edge of your property.

This gorgeous boy is Ted, a stunning Lurcher who is around 2-3 years old. Ted is a lovely, gentle, laid-back boy who is great around people, and would love a sofa to snooze on. He is ok with most other dogs, but not cats or small furries. He would be best in a home with older children. Ted is neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. If you are interested in meeting Ted, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.”

It’s been a very busy start to the new school year. We had our Harvest Festival on Friday the 23rd of September, it was well attended by parents and relatives of Wroot Travis pupils. After the Harvest Festival, the year 6 pupils went round the village delivering the harvest bags with fruit and veg for the older people of the village. The canned goods went to the Food Bank in Epworth. We hope everyone enjoyed their food. We have received some very nice thank you cards. KS2 are taking part in a poetry competition called ‘Once Upon A Dream’. We all had to write a poem about a dream. Hopefully they will be published in a book. KS1 and KS2 took part in a scarecrow competition for the Festival Of The Plough. Our theme was the Wizard Of Oz. Our characters were Dorothy and the Scarecrow. Years 5 and 6 went to The Pods and took part in the Discover Schools Event. Activities included: bath bomb making, slime, banana DNA, skipping. There were various talks and a photo booth where we wore costumes of what we wanted to be in the future. Other activities included bookmark making, colouring and Lego. We had a wonderful time! We raised £517.22p for the Macmillan Cancer Charity. The stalls at the coffee morning were: tombala, cake and coffee and raffle. People were very generous. The whole of the school made Christmas cards and they come in wrapping paper, gift cards, and Christmas cards. We hope the parents like them. We think they looked very good!!! British Legion, veterans, uniform groups and members of the public are invited to attend. The service will include the Last Post and Reveille being played by a local musician as in previous years and the 2-minute silence at 11am. The Parish Council has organised a road closure of East Lound Road and Graizelound Field Road on Tuesday 11th November from 10.45am to 11.15am. Any concerns please contact the Parish Clerk for further details. The Parish Council are providing wreaths for both war memorials and are contributing to the cost of refreshments after the Remembrance Sunday Parade Service @ 10.45am on Sunday 13 November at St. Nicholas' Church Haxey. Co-op Programme Haxey Parish Residents will be aware that the Parish Council took over the responsibility as Sole Trustee of the Westwoodside Playing Fields Association (WPFA) Charity in 2013 and the major improvements carried out over the last couple of years to the Foreman Carter Centre and the outdoor facilities funded by grants from North Lincolnshire Council and WPFA finances. As part of the ongoing improvement plans, the next project is to upgrade the flooring in the Centre Function Room to a high quality wooden floor. Local Contractors have been asked to quote for the replacement and will be used for any work carried out. A new wooden floor will much improve the experience of the facility for all Centre users and will also enable the room to be kept clean more easily. To help with the project, the Charity has been selected to receive funding from the Co-op Local Community Fund. The Fund has begun raising money and this will be distributed in March 2017, which means that the Association will receive a contribution towards the floor replacement, but we need your help. The more support we get, the more funding we could
