was hoping I could relax a little before working on the October issue! Things never seem to go has planned do they? First week in September I treated myself to a day at the races, then it was my daughters birthday, and then my son started nursery school. It was all go! Lots of activities for October, check out your local church for harvest events, Race night at the Carpenters Arms and an evening of Ceilidh at the Westwoodside village Hall. You will find all the information of these events in your local Arrow. Halloween is upon us once again. Stuck for the scariest outfit in town, try Epworth Fancy Dress, they have some amazing outfits. Also Maize maize at Hatfield Woodhouse have their yearly Shriek Week and Pumpkin Hunt, see page 21 for details. Dont miss it ! The deadline for November issue is Wednesday 13th October. Have a safe and fun Halloween and enjoy the read. Best Wishes Carolyn Grant (Editor) 1 Nether Cantley Lane, Old Cantley, Doncaster, South Yorkshire,

Epworth and District Flower Club has had a trying time since the AGM in February revealed that no-one was willing to take over from the retiring office positions, which are crucial to the running of the club. It was thought that the club may have to fold. However at the specially convened ,decision making meeting, held on the 9th August, there was a brave volunteer for the Programme Secretary post, followed, slowly, by all other officer posts. So, forward we go –hopefully from strength to strength ! Plans were made for our 50th Anniversary celebrations, which will take place in March 2011.Well Done to the Ladies who have in effect rescued the Club.

Old Smithy Trip Sparked Interest About 30 members of the Epworth Men‘s Society spent an enjoyable and informative evening at Owston Ferry‘s Old Smithy on Monday (September 13) night, when they were given conducted tours of the building. Divided up into four parties, they were then shown the smithy itself and a courtyard area housing hand -made agricultural machinery and there they were also given a demonstration of rope making. They then returned to the Grade 11 listed building - built in the 1850‘s – to explore the museum and heritage centre on the first floor of the Old Smithy, which houses many items from the village's past and an impressive collection of photographs After some two hours members then made their way to the village‘s White Hart pub for a light supper and a little liquid refreshment.

These are the current Neighbourhood Action Team priorities for the South wards of the Isle of Axholme: St Martin‘s Church and Castle Hill, Owston Ferry: Anti-social behaviour, Underage drinking, Criminal Damage, drug offences.
PC Constable 1839 Tina Starbuck
Police Community Support Officer 7574 Sue Fahy
We have received reports of youths congregating around the church and Castle Hill mainly of an evening which is impacting on local residents and the church and its grounds. Due to the locality it does make it difficult for these people to be seen ordinarily and is an ideal area for groups to gather. There is also evidence of empty bottles of alcohol and other litter have been found. The Neighbourhood team are making regular patrols of the area and have already seized an amount of alcohol from underage persons and a couple of people have been dealt with for possession of cannabis. The Neighbourhood team will continue to patrol the areas and deal with whoever they come across Westwoodside Playing Field: Anti-social behaviour and Nuisance Scooters. We have received reports of youths congregating in the Playing Field and riding scooters across the football area making a general nuisance, Any persons found committing any offences will be dealt with and where relevant, there is the opportunity to police staff to seize scooters at a cost to the owner. Neighbourhood staff will continue to patrol the area and would encourage anyone with any information to contact us. UPDATE – There have been no further incidents reported to police regarding this priority. The Neighbourhood team will patrol and monitor the area, this priority is now closed. A 161, Low Burnham, proposed caravan site: Protestors, criminal damage.
Residents in Low Burnham are opposing the proposals for a controversial caravan site on their doorstep. A local businessman and landowner is seeking to set up a certified site on a field just off the A161 which runs through the village of Low Burnham. North Lincolnshire council‘s Planning and Highways Officers, and the Camping and Caravanning Club have visited the site on June 15th, but met protestors who claimed they were not allowed to air their views. The council state they await views from the Caravan club relating to design, location and accessibility. A report of damage to hedging was also reported on 22 June, however a bye law states the hedge can be cut if no birds are nesting, which on this occasion there was not. Police will investigate reports of criminal offences and public disorder, and will work in partnership with those as already mention who are involved in the proposed site. UPDATE – The police and council have no further issues with this priority and there have been no further calls to the police. The site has been issued with a certiticate from the Camping and Caravanning Club. This priority is now closed. patrol and monitor the area to maintain this result. This priority is now closed. Police Community Support Officers are now empowered to issue £80 fixed penalty notices for offences of Graffiti, Flyposters, dog fowling and Litter. The On Target football for boys and girls aged 8-19yrs – FREE – has started on Friday nights at Epworth Leisure Centre Multi use games area. 7-15pm to 8-15pm for years 5-8, then 8-15pm to 9-15pm for years 9+. Please come along and participate. Members of the neighbourhood team endeavour to make some of the nights to give support and encouragement. Officers continue to work with the partnership agencies to encourage and support diversionary activities for youths to prevent them from getting involved in untoward behaviour. This includes support of the playing field associations in fundraising activities. Neighbourhood officers always endeavour to accommodate and engage with Neighbourhood watch meetings and would encourage and support anyone wishing to initiate a new group. Pc Starbuck is actively involved in the Farmwatch scheme set up with the involvement of local farmers from the south and central wards of the Isle of Axholme. This was at the request of a number of farmers to allow us to meet and discuss issues affecting their farms. The meetings were running with what is considered to be a great success; however the last couple of meetings have had a poor turnout. Those farmers who have made the time for a couple of hours still find it a benefit and we would encourage any farmer who either did attend or who wishes to attend in the future to make a note of the next meeting in their diary – WEDNESDAY 3rd NOVEMBER 2010 at 8pm at the RED LION HOTEL, EP10 The meeting Pleaseonly mention “The when Ifresponding tofurther advertisements WORTH. lasts at the most Arrow” a couple of hours. you require any details please contact Pc Starbuck.
You can contact Humberside Police on 0845 60 60 222 for non-emergency calls. If you feel uncomfortable in calling the police with information about crime, then please consider contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers is an independent charity working to fight crime. They can also be joined on Twitter, Facebook and Bebo or if you go onto the Crimestoppers website you can also fill an on-line form. When contacting Crimestoppers you do not have to give your name and you may be eligible for a cash reward. PC 1839 Tina Starbuck is responsible for the Neighbourhood Action Team issues for the South Ward of the Isle of Axholme and working alongside her are PC 1169 Sally Jameson, PCSO 7574 Sue Fahy and the Neighbourhood Team, who regularly patrols the South area of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community issues with you. Please feel free to stop and speak with them or alternatively contact either of us via 0845 60 60 222. PC Starbuck, PCSO Sue Fahy and PCSO Stewart Pearson will be in Westwoodside on Friday 8th October between 3pm and 4pm, where they will commence their walkabout surgery from the Carpenters Arms, Public House, please come along and make use of this opportunity to have a chat with the officers regarding any matters relating to your community. We do our utmost to make these visits, however I have to say that if our services are required at short notice for a priority then we apologise for any inconvenience this causes. The police station at Epworth also provides a front counter service for two days a week, Mondays and Thursdays, between 9am and 3pm. The date and location for the next Neighbourhood Action Team meeting is Monday 13th December 2010 at 7pm at Owston Ferry.

While we were on holiday recently, there were a number of very young children enjoying playing in the hotel swimming pool. Some would jump into the water, go right under, and then come back up laughing and completely fearless. It‘s a reminder to us of Jesus‘ comment that we should be more like children, especially when we pray. Prayer is a serious matter: it saves lives (like being able to swim) but prayer should also be enjoyable. Rather than worrying about how well we are praying, it would be much better just to dive in, so to speak, and enjoy it. Just as some adults are nervous about swimming, so others are unsure about prayer. They give so little time to it. They forget that living is prayer, that it‘s a hotline of joys, worries, and chat between us and God. Jesus recommended that we should be more childlike when we pray, and not get too worried about the technicalities. Maybe that way we could all keep more in touch with ourselves and with God. THE REV. JEREMY GREEN [C. OF E. PARISH PRIEST AT HAXEY & OWSTON FERRY]
————————— West Butterwick Village Plan Update The Village Plan Committee were represented with a stand at the Field Day on August 21st. Many people came to view the photographs and talk to the members of the Committee. It is now considered that the consultation exercise required to compile the Village Plan Questionnaire is complete. The Committee will now begin to compile the questions in the categories that are relevant to the issues raised during the two consultation processes. This may take some time. The next meeting of the Committee is Wednesday 13th October.

Wroot Travis School News Letter We are back to school now, refreshed from our holidays. The children look very smart in their uniform.
Our KS1 class during numeracy. The school has a new friend, he is called Mr Joe Joe and is a soft fluffy monkey. Mr Joe Joe goes home with a child each weekend and whoever takes him home writes in Mr Joe Joe‘s diary to tell us what he got up to at the weekend. Photos can be put in the diary or drawings. As he is a monkey there‘s no telling what he will get up to. We are taking part in the World‘s biggest coffee morning to raise funds for Macmillan cancer support. This will be in school on 24th September from 10.00 to 11.30. Please come and join us to raise funds for this very worthwhile cause. Some of our children took part in the Lifestyle initiative during the summer holidays. Samantha Cook, together with her sister and two friends, ran a cake stall, did a car boot stall, did gardening jobs, odd jobs, mucked out horses and were waiters and waitresses at a summer barbeque. They raised £340. Robyn Wainwright and Lauren Dixon had a stall at the Epworth show where they raised £70 and they also helped clear litter from the Thurlow playing field. The money raised went to Macmillan cancer care. We start our after school clubs soon with multi sports, cookery and gardening. During the summer the plants in our vegetable garden have grown but so have the weeds. We have a lot of very big green tomatoes so we may be making chutney in our cookery club. A big thank you to parents and members of our community. During the summer we had a bags 2 school collection and we have just received a cheque for £368 for school funds. Our next collection is on Thursday 21st October so it will soon be time to turn out those wardrobes and fill up our blue bags. Once again thank you for your support.

Maggie McManus joined the Thorne Slimlines class in April of this year and has lost a staggering 50lbs in four months! Says Maggie " I have been a yo yo dieter for most of my life, joining every slimming club going ,trying every diet going but never succeeding! I had decided not to try anymore, as most of the diets seemed to stop you enjoying a normal life. However I slowly started to put more and more weight on and found my health was starting to suffer! I couldn't bend down to fasten my shoes laces, couldn't play with my grandchildren, my hips were really hurting me due to all my excess weight and I was compounding the situation by stuffing my face more and more (especially cakes . bread potatoes etc)with all the high calorie foods which i couldn't burn off because i couldn't move!!! I had seen adverts for slimlines so i decided to have one last ditch attempt at losing weight. When i walked into the meeting I was surprised at how many people were losing weight! The manager Lyn made me feel really welcome and I thoroughly enjoy the meeting ,she makes you laugh so much but always gets down to the point! I decided to do the 'low carb' weight loss option which suits me best but there are 6 others to choose from and all incorporate the 'banking system' which enables you to have one or two free days where you can eat and drink what you like. I am now 50lb lighter and i feel brilliant! i have another 2 stone to lose which i am determined to do in time for Christmas. So please dont give up, just join Slimlines!

Carol Hill was the speaker at the first meeting of the Haxey and Westwoodside Heritage Society after the summer holidays. Carol‘s talks have always been very popular with Society members and they gave her a warm welcome on the evening of September 9 th in Westwoodside Village Hall. She said she had been coming to the Society for some ten to fifteen years. Carol said she retired from Doncaster Library two years ago where she had worked in the local History Section. Upon retirement she was asked by Tickhill Local History Group to do some research for them. Following nine months research, the result is a talk on ―Old Tickhill‖. She said it was the first time she had given the talk, but Carol is always very well prepared and no one would have known. The Isle Camera Club loaned their equipment for the digital presentation and George Fiddler from the Club operated this. Nothing is known about Tickhill before the 11th Century when it was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 when the land was given to one of William the Conqueror‘s French Barons who built the original castle. It survived the Civil War and later belonged to the Duchy of Lancaster, in other words the Monarchy. It is well hidden by trees and was surrounded by a moat; she showed a photo of skaters on the moat in Victorian times. Later a large house was built in the grounds. Carol showed many old photographs of Tickhill and talked about the locations and people shown. Much of village life and local celebrations took place around the old Butter Cross and Market Place, where there was also the village pump. There were pictures of fairs held every October, May Day celebrations and also parties for Empire Day. The local Hunt met there. She showed the development of shops, pubs and beer houses, the latter anyone could run in their own premises upon the purchase of a licence for 2 gns. Norma Neill gave a vote of thanks for a very interesting talk. Earlier Chairman Norma Neill told members that the Committee had been busy during the summer break researching the biographical details of all the soldiers listed on the war memorial. These were to be put into folders and presented to the Church and two Chapels in the Parish at the November meeting, which this year falls on Armistice Day. Copies will also be given to the two schools to be used by the children in their work. The Society is also going to hold another Table Top Sale in Haxey Church Hall on Saturday, 20th November. The next meeting will be the A.G.M on October 14th at 7.30pm in Westwoodside Village Hall. \New members are always made very welcome at Society meetings.

''I would like to thank everyone who attended and gave so generously at the Coffee Morning held at the Haxey Memorial in aid of the Alzheimers Society After seeing my mum suffer with Alzheimer's for five years I know how difficult it is for the people suffering and their carers. I am so pleased that the coffee morning together with donations raised a total of £1900.00, which I am sure will help this worthy charity. A big thanks to all my friends who helped with the planning and worked so hard on the day, raising this amount of money has made it all worth while. ''

Young Isle Duo Enter Scunthorpe Pub Idol Contest 17 year old Joe Dance of Owston Ferry, and Emma Morley of Wroot, who together perform as Perfect Illusion, entered the Scunthorpe Telegraph Pub Idol competition. Their heat of the competition was held last week in Campbell‘s Bar on Doncaster Road in Scunthorpe. Emma and Joe have been practising together since Joe started to learn guitar just over six months ago. They are a singing/guitar duo. Their appearance in the Pub Idol contest is only the third time they have ever performed in public, and the first time they weren‘t in front of a known, friendly audience. They were understandably nervous as they faced the six judges and the strange faces in the audience, but acquitted themselves creditably. They sang two songs, the first being Mike Oldfield‘s ―Moonlight Shadow‖, and the second Eva Cassidy‘s ―Songbird‖. The audience fell completely silent during Emma‘s gentle and emotional rendition of Songbird, which also brought a tear to the eyes of at least three of the Photograph is courtesy of judges. A spontaneous round of Eric Dinsdale and applause with some members of the Melissa Kelly. audience getting to their feet followed this, their final number. Double Take Photography Despite the very good audience Ltd from Scunthorpe reaction, Joe and Emma weren‘t put through to the final of the contest, which is to be held on the 13th of September, having been piped at the post by two other contestants. Emma and Joe have been contacted by the team at Grimsby Telegraph, and asked to enter their version of Pub Idol, following being informed that the youngsters should have gone through to the final in Scunthorpe as they performed so well. They have accepted the invitation to attend and will be in the heat held at the Studio in Cleethorpes on the 1st of September. Unfortunately on the day of the competition, they received a phone call and their entry was withdrawn because they had to be 18 years old. A disappointing result for them both. Anyone wanting to see and learn a little more of this up and coming duo should log onto their website:http://the-perfect-illusion.webs.com

The Isle of Axholme
Where You Live
Your Local History
Adapted by Anthony Catherall The Drainage of the Isle (continued) The past 250 years have seen continual improvement and extension of the drainage of the Isle of Axholme. In 1763 there was a record flood when the Idle and Torne broke their banks and laid waste thousands of acres. It was the culmination of years of damaged crops. It needed the disaster to make people realise that new drainage works were needed. In 1764 John Smeaton, a famous Civil Engineer, was consulted and he suggested the deepening of the drains and for some more relief drains, but finance for the scheme was not available. In 1795 an Act of Parliament provide for the enclosure of Commons including £20,000 for new drains. Acting upon Smeaton’s suggestions Foster cut a new drain in 1795. From Bull Hassocks it took the Old River Idle’s bed and then ran parallel to Vermuyden’s New River Torne to Pilfrey’s Bridge where it took the channel of the New River Torne to Althorpe. The New River Torne took the channel of the New River Idle and a new channel called the North River was cut to Keadby. The new drain from Bullock Hassocks is now called the South level Engine Drain. About the same time the ‘Folly’ drain was dug. Unofficially it was called ‘Foster’s Folly’. It ran from Bull Hassocks pumping station alongside Foster’s other drain for part of the way to Pilfrey Bridge and from there to the River Trent at Derrythorpe. A second cut to Keadby was made from Pilfrey Bridge to enable both Althorpe sluices to take the New Torne water. The New idle River was passed under the Torne at Pilfrey and thence to Keadby. About 1813 another new drain called ‘Cataline’ was dug to help the drainage of the Santoft area. It runs parallel to the Hatfield Waste Drain and is southern of the Double Rivers. Just before Pilfrey Bridge it goes under its partner and is the northern of the Three Rivers to Keadby. The drainage was so well improved by these new works that there were even complaints that the new land was to dry! However in 1828 the summer was so wet that for weeks on end, the Trent was too high to accept water from Axholme. A committee set up to look at the problem concluded that the drains ought to drain straight to Adlingfleet which is what, 200 years earlier, Vermuyden ought to have done. George Leather in July 1829 surveyed the water levels of the Trent and recommended a direct drain to the Humber. His plans envisaged a huge waterway 150 feet wide at the bottom, thus with sloping and banking would be about 300 feet wide. It would be excavated from Idle Stop to the Humber. He anticipated it as a tidal river with ships using it and Bykersdike as a route to Gainsborough. The cost estimated was around £354,000. Sixteen trial borings were actually made to plan the route. Doubtless, it would have been built, for an Act of Parliament authorised the work; but for the development and introduction of pumping stations.

Excellent Day at West Butterwick Field Day Saturday 21st August Despite a sprinkling of showers, enthusiasm was not dampened at West Butterwick Field Day this year. It was a huge success. The displays from Batons of Steel, the Flyball team from Scunthorpe Obedience and Agility Training Club and the Taekwondo group were all entertaining and much enjoyed by the crowds who turned out. The support from the local community and residents from the surrounding areas was magnificent. There was the usual mix of traditional summer fair activities including a Titanic slide, coconut shy, welly wanging and tombola stalls. There were stalls which supported local charities that come to the event free of charge. The BBQ burgers and bar were busy all afternoon. The children‘s races were very popular and keenly contested. At the end of the event all children present received a goody bag. To date a total of £1500 has been raised (this helps to pay the village hall insurance). Special thanks must go to all our sponsors who were listed in the programme. Finally a great big thank you to all who attended and we hope to see you again next year – book the date Saturday 13th August 2011 Regards Bunty Harris

Westwoodside Church of England School Last Summer Term, as part of their ‗Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary‘ (Gardening) theme, our children in F1 (Nursery) were set a ‗Sunflower Challenge‘. Each child planted a sunflower seed at School. They looked after their seed including daily watering in our greenhouse. During May, the children took their seedling home to plant in their own garden. The challenge was to see who could grow the tallest sunflower by the start of the Autumn Term. On Friday 10 September the judging took place. There was a lot of interest generated with many sunflowers having grown over two metres! The tallest was a fantastic 2.95 metres. Prizes of book vouchers and sunflower scarecrows, kindly donated by our Parents Teachers Association, were presented to the children who had grown the three tallest sunflowers. Many thanks to the Staff who organised the challenge and the Parents/Carers who supported their children‘s gardening at home. Roger Marshall Headteacher

THE TRENTSIDE CONFEDERATION – SCHOOL NEWS
Only one week into the new term and already the schools are buzzing. Lots of enthusiastic children (and staff!) with stories of adventures they have been on over the Summer break. Adventures include camping out at the V Festival, racing round the village on a Birthday Fire Engine, spending 4 weeks in France, braving the rides at Light Water Valley as well as days out to Lego Land and Sundown Adventure Park. It sounds like a good time was had by all. Everyone has returned refreshed, eager to learn and looking a few inches taller! We welcome five new pupils to West Butterwick school :- Henry, Natasha, Isabella, Phoenix and Lewis. We also welcome two new staff members :- Mrs Rosemary Jordan (Foundation Stage Class Teacher) and Mrs Kathy Spiers (Infant Teaching Assistant). We offer our congratulations to Miss Greasley who is now Mrs Clipsham (Infant Teacher) following her marriage in August. At St Martin‘s, we welcome twelve new pupils :- Lois and Melissa, Sharayi and Sekayi, Saskia and Alexia, Billy, Aiden, Harry, Brooke, Aeron and Finlay. I‘m pleased to report that all of the children, including our very youngest in Foundation Stage 1, have settled in well. We have some interesting learning planned for the Autumn Term:The Junior pupils at West Butterwick have created a Tudor Society in their classroom and they collect points in order to advance in this society. They all have the opportunity to become a Marquis, Duke or Duchess but at the moment most are a lowly peasant! As part of the Tudor topic, children will be participating in Tudor dance classes and will make Tudor instruments. Furthermore, our Key Stage Two children are already rehearsing for their end of term performance of the ‗Rocky Monster Show‘. We look forward to that. West Butterwick Infants have been enjoying the well-known children‘s picture book ‗Aliens Love Underpants‘ and will be designing and making their own pants as part of Design and Technology studies. All of the children continue to study French and the older pupils in particular are becoming increasingly advanced with this ‗Modern Foreign Language‘ developing proficiency in written French as well as conversational. Animals is the next vocabulary focus in connection with this. St Martin‘s in Owston Ferry is equally busy. Already there are various exciting projects afoot within the four classes, such as making money containers, learning about the Vikings, Victorian Britain and Guy Fawkes. Keeping Healthy is a topic that is running throughout the school – we now have our Healthy Schools Status! A number of our ‗past pupils‘ who left us as ‗Year Sixes‘ at the end of last term have been very busy over the Summer holiday with their Lifestyle Awards Project:- the memorial rose garden at St Martin‘s Church now boasts 12 new rose bushes and has benefited from a refurbishment by Shane and Robson Harrison and Curtis and Ben Elliott. This project, including apple trees, insect-friendly plants and bird feeders for Castle Hill Nature Reserve, is being carried out in memory of the children‘s late Grandad (Paul Bower), Dolly Johnson and Mary Fletcher. Well done to all concerned for working hard to have such a positive impact on the community. (Don‘t forget to visit our website www.trentsideconfederation.com for lots more information on both schools) Mrs Josephine Buckle, Headteacher (The Trentside Confederation ; St Martin‘s C of E and West Butterwick C of E Primary Schools)

Heritage Pavement In 2011 the interior of St Andrew‘s Church Epworth will be undergoing a significant refurbishment. The funding for this vital work has been secured, the greater part being a grant of £457,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. This has been awarded to enable St Andrew‘s to explain more fully the history and heritage of Epworth and the Isle of Axholme. As part of the redevelopment the ancient baptismal font is to be moved to a central position at the back of the Church which we think may be its original position. Set into the floor around the font will be up to 200 clay tiles depicting some aspect of the story of Epworth and the Isle from ancient times to the present day, hopefully leaving some space for future significant events. These tiles would be similar to the ones in the time line in the pavement in Doncaster and other places. The tiles would be designed by individuals, groups and schools who may wish to create the actual outline themselves. This would be done under the supervision of Jon Cocks of Axholme Arts so no particular artwork skills would be required. The tiles would then be fired professionally by Len and Janet Latham, ceramics artists of Belton. We would like to involve as many local people and organisations as possible. For the individual member of the community or group representative who may be interested they are invited to drop in for a coffee between 10.00 am and 12 pm on Saturday 13th November in St Andrew‘s Church to discuss. Schools and groups will receive a personal invitation to take part. We hope that the pavement will be complete by the early part of 2012. We are particularly keen for local schools to be involved in this project which we hope would be valuable in helping young people to discover the story of their community. As we hope that this will be a permanent feature of St Andrew‘s Church those that take part will be able to show their children and grandchildren what they did when they were at school. It is also envisaged that a time capsule will be placed under the pavement. For further information please contact: Rev Ian Walker 01427 873790 Mrs Penny Birks 01427 872012 Melvyn Rose 01427 872080

Doncaster Advanced Motorist Beyond the Test (Observation)
Dear readers, To pass the L-test you only have to read a car number plate at 20.5 meters (67 feet) To be a good driver you‘ll need much better vision than that. Most people‘s eyesight deteriorates very gradually, so they don‘t notice the effects, but research shows that millions of British drivers have poor eye-sight, and that can make them a danger to themselves, and you every time they drive. Poor eyesight can affect reaction times and spatial awareness, while restricted vision may cause a driver not to see a hazard at all. Have an eye test every two years (or whenever you suspect there‘s been a deterioration in your vision) and always wear spectacles or contact lenses if an optician has recommended you wear them for driving. To be an effective good driver you must try to absorb as much information as possible every time you drive. There are dozens of things going on at any given moment and you have to instantly process that information, focusing on those that are relevant and disregarding those that are not. Of course, all drivers do this to a degree, but a good driver takes it to another level, constantly assessing driving conditions, reading the road a long distance ahead, and making decisions accordingly. Forward Observation. Almost all ordinary drivers only observe the road 5-20 meters in front of them, so, as well as missing most upcoming dangers altogether, at 60mph they have under a second to react if a hazard appears. Good drivers don‘t have this problem; they constantly scan the area closest to them, as well as the middle distance and all the way to the horizon. One useful technique is to immediately scan the next section of road, as far as you can see ahead, every time you round a bend or reach the crest of a hill. This early-warning system has massive benefits: you can often see what direction the road is going to take, identify up-coming hazards, see traffic jams early or spot potentially dangerous drivers or vehicles. Your eyes are capable of long distance vision at the same time as short distance. If you look far ahead, you can still be aware of what is happening close to you. But if you look at something very close to you, like the rear of the car, you will struggle to see ahead. Tailgating is the nemesis of forward observation. It severely limits your vision, often to a dangerous level, and means that the lorry or van driver in front of you may not even know you are there. The good drivers position their vehicle further back and slightly to the side, so that they can always see the line of traffic ahead of them, lifting their vision, but still being aware of the foreground to get early warning if the queue of traffic £110 starts to brake. Lifting your vision is one of the key advantages a good driver has over the ordinary driver. Rear Observation. Good drivers obtain much more information from their rearview mirrors than the average driver. They don‘t just observe what‘s immediately behind; they use their mirrors to calculate speed and distance over a longer range without, of course, neglecting what‘s going on in front of them. With practice important information can be absorbed in a moment. Always be aware of your blind spots if in any doubt, have a ‗lifesaver‘ glance over your shoulder. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer, you‘ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 020 8996 9600 Safe Driving. 40 Secretary, Please mention Arrow” when Paul Tuke.
