I would like to thank everyone who attended and gave so generously at the coffee morning in aid of the Alzheimer's Society on the 16th August in the Haxey Memorial Hall. It was an amazing turn out, the total raised including donations from local businesses and individuals was £2,800.00. I must thank all the people who donated raffle and tombola prizes and gave baking for the cake stall. I am very grateful to Nicola Moore from Epworth who shaved her head for charity and has kindly donated £1,300.00 of her sponsor money to he Alzheimer's charity. This made an impressive £4,100.00 raised , half of which is going to help fund the research of the disease and half is going to present day sufferers and their carers. Lastly a big thank you to all my friends who helped with the planning and worked so hard on the day, without their help it wouldn't be possible. Best Wishes Gill Snow A team of girls from Belton All Saint’s Primary School have been fundraising to help local animal shelter Isle Rescue and Macmillan Cancer Nurses. As part of Operation Lifestyle, an initiative run by Humberside Police, Georgia Campion, Lily Farminer, Francesca & Eleanor Tillman (pictured, along with rescue dog Blaze) have made and sold loom bands, and organised a Bike Ride across the Humber Bridge, along with selling Raffle tickets to raise much needed funds for the Rescue, which is based in West Stockwith. They have so far raised over £240!! We are so grateful to the girls for all of their help, and will be using the money to help pay vet bills, and to buy food and toys for all the dogs and cats in our care.

Are you over 40? Do you feel a little unfit, lacking exercise and don’t know what to do about it? Perhaps you feel that signing up for a gym membership is not for you, but you want to try something a bit different that’s not too strenuous? Isle Dance for Health could be just the thing for you – as funded by a North Lincolnshire Council Community Grant Programme. After the outstanding success of the first three programmes of country dances held in Westwoodside, Epworth and Crowle, local folk dance band Lys St Georges are gearing up for another programme of 9 dances starting on 2 October. These are some comments about our programme: A brilliant idea. Good way of keeping fit and socialising. Well organised and dances to suit most people. Loved the live music. Great fun, relaxed friendly atmosphere and people. No pressure, lots of encouragement. This has been one the most enjoyable experiences – friendship, conviviality, fun! Really hope the format is able to continue – think the proof of its popularity is in the numbers attending each week! Many thanks. This has been a great way to exercise. Much more fun than keep fit. Very good treatment – exercise, good laugh, meet new people. Should be on prescription. Thank you
Dates and locations for all of the new dances this Autumn are: Each dance starts at 2.30pm and lasts for 2 hours. You don’t need a partner nor any experience in country dancing and the dances will be suitable for all levels of fitness. There will be a small admission charge of £2 for each dance. Look out for more local publicity or for more information contact Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.

Great Entertainment Due At Epworth’s Thurlow Pavilion Another night of great entertainment is on the cards for later in the year when Pacific Curls -band with an international reputation – will be appearing at Epworth’s Thurlow Pavilion. It will be a one-night only gig and takes place at the Pavilion – a registered charity- on the night of Friday, October 3rd. Door open at 7.20pm for an 8pm start. Tickets, costing £8 each, will be available from end of August at the Epworth high fashion shop - Serendipity – on the town’s High Street and by telephoning (01427) 872491. Pacific Curls make music that is both worldly and enthralling. With a cornerstone of backbeat Pacific rhythms, vivacious Scottish fiddle playing and evocative Maori instrumentation and lyrics. The group has pioneered a fusion sound that seamlessly blends their indigenous roots, making classifying their sound a challenge. Their use of jazz chord transitions, traditional Scottish fiddle tunes, expressive vocals, political and moving lyrics in both Maori and English, their use of world instruments with Pacific style beats and moods, shakes and bakes it all into a contemporary intriguing edginess. They have made appearances at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games celebrations, WOMAD New Zealand , WOMAD UK, WOMAD Earth Station, City of London Festival and Borneo Rainforest World Music Festival – to name but a few. The evening of brilliant entertainment will be brought to Epworth by LIVELINCS, the Rural Touring Scheme for North Lincolnshire sponsored by The Arts Council, England. Those attending are advised to bring their own drinks and nibbles.

Debbie Beecher, Chairman of the Epworth and District Flower Club welcomed everyone to the first meeting since the Demonstration, “Panache”, given by Andrew Grisewood in July. That meeting had been to raise money for the NSPCC and Debbie welcomed guests from the organisation. Carolyn Drury then informed the meeting of the support received by several businesses which had waived fees, enabling a total of £1327.40 to be donated to the charity and proceeded to hand over a cheque. Thanks were expressed all round and the NSPCC gave a certificate recording the donation to be retained in the Flower Club’s scrapbook. Debbie went on to inform members of a little more business, mainly relating to the Open Meeting to be held on 17th November. Marian Hughes also informed members of her forthcoming birthday and her plans for recognising it. The evening’s demonstrator, Eileen Barraclough, was then introduced. Eileen, from West Yorkshire told us about herself and her involvement in flower arranging and her love of entering competitions. She titled her talk “These are a few of my favourite things” and amused the group as she produced five relatively modern and very original designs. Eileen’s first favourite involved a large metal frame onto which she attached a large branch of contorted hazel. She incorporated a pretty fern which she had propagated and explained how we could do the same. Large variegated ivy leaves, magnolia, red edged bergenia and philodendron leaves completed the foliage and then Eileen used physalis and leuchadendron setting the Autumn theme and continued with yellow orchids, gold carnations and calla lilies. Finally she inserted craspedia, a tiny pompom like flower on a long stalk. The horizontal arrangement was quite stunning. The second arrangement was created using Eileen‘s favourite urn and its provenance was explained as she worked. Into the urn Eileen placed a semi- circular frame onto which she slotted six tall bamboo canes. Next Eileen created a collar using skimmia and euphorbia amongst other foliage. Avalanche roses, some of which were placed in test tubes attached to the bamboo canes to continue the height, hypericum and very dainty ornithogalum (a variety called Black eyed Suzie) created a stunning, white display and to give a burst of contrasting colour Eileen finally inserted four stalks of vivid gentian. Applause greeted this creation. Next Eileen worked on a vertical frame and this time she talked of her favourite colour combinations. Stapled and rolled aspidistra leaves and baby fatsia were used for the foliage and the group were surprised by the production of some beautiful purple ornamental brassicas. Four pink Calla lilies, toning begonia leaves, blue viburnum berries, a little purple statis and deep pink roses completed this arrangement. Eileen‘s fourth favourite display was produced in an inverted cone of quite some size. She first placed some bear grass in the centre creating a very tall effect. To the base of the arrangement she added looped ferns, fatsia and tropical palms. The height was expanded with the addition of three beautiful deep red gladioli, orange strelitzia and dark anthurium. The final act was to unfasten the bear grass and another wonderful arrangement was achieved. While creating her final arrangement Eileen amused her audience with her tale of travelling with a dummy beside her in the car. The end product was a large arrangement in a different shaped urn, this time containing contorted willow, various ferns, deep pink gerbera, King Arthur roses, large, deep red anthurium, more roses of a toning red and very pretty leycesteria hanging their beautiful heads. Eileen was thanked for her very entertaining and informative evening and five lucky members won an arrangement each and a sixth person won a small bunch of unused flowers. The next meeting, on October 13th at 7.30pm will be a demonstration by Rachel Poole and a Bring and Buy will be held to boost “The funds. TRENTSIDE FEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS West Butterwick and St Martin’s (Owston Ferry) C of E Primary Schools Following our Summer Break we have returned refreshed for the new academic year. We welcome Mrs Gemma Goodwin to the teaching team at West Butterwick and Mrs Emma Sands as Business Manager across both schools. There are plenty of interesting learning experiences unfolding at both schools since the start of the Autumn Term. West Butterwick Infants have been studying the Great Fire of London, producing some quality art work associated with this. The pupils are also involved in a commemorative World War 1 Art Installation Project which involves the children creating a special poppy dedicated to someone from The Isle who lost their life. These specially created poppies will be brought together with other poppies from across North Lincolnshire to create a magnificent sculpture prior to Remembrance Day on 11th November. The junior pupils have started the term off at St Martin’s studying the structure of the Earth, linked to their creative curriculum. They have explored and learnt about the different layers of the Earth by building up salt dough models made up of different colours. This work is now being extended to constructing volcanoes so it should be very exciting! There is an educational visit in the pipeline for the Infants to see The Gruffalo production at the Baths Hall in late September. This ties in well with the Infant Pupils’ celebration and book sharing on International Literacy Day (8th September 2014). Children took inspiration from each other’s favourite books to generate their own storybook character. At this time of year, we are also busy planning our Harvest Festival Services. All of the ‘school-grown’ vegetables at West Butterwick have been harvested now – this year’s crop of Swiss Chard, strawberries, runner beans, broad beans and carrots was well received with some new recipes being tried out, such as strawberry chocolate truffle cake and cheesy pasta with Swiss Chard. St Martin’s school is engaging in the ‘We Can Grow Project’ for the first time from this term and we look forward to comparing recipes and top tips for growing fruit and veg across our Trentside Federation. We are also looking forward to developing the woodland at St Martin’s this year. Both schools in our Federation continue to receive specialist music tuition. We look forward to hearing some of the wonderful trumpet and recorder playing in our church services and special assemblies! Pupils also continue to learn French from Infants through to Year 6. They are doing very well in connection with this. Bon effort! There are many sporting events already planned for this forthcoming academic year. Our Sports Ambassadors this year are: - St Martin’s - Ffion Francis, Abigail Platt, Jackson Swales and Yarred Allen and West Butterwick: - Charlie Caton, Tristan Donner, Joshua Willerton and Daisy Willerton. The remit for our Sports Ambassadors is to use their skills in/enthusiasm for sports and games to help everyone try different activities. Our ambassadors also support the schools’ work in finding ways to help every child to lead a healthier lifestyle. Across the year, they show different year groups how to use new equipment and play games, with demonstrations having a focus on motivating and encouraging children to join in and improve their skills. A very worthwhile role indeed. We look forward to a productive and interesting term! Mrs Josephine Buckle, Headteacher, St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools – the Trentside Federation

Autumn Rain and Leaves Block Drains Dear readers, Autumn is a lovely time of year and compared to winter, it’s a lot easier to cope with from the drivers’ perspective. It will soon be autumn and with it we have two predictable seasonal problems. Fallen leaves may be colourful, but when they are combined with heavier seasonal rainfall, they can catch out an unwary road user. Slippery leaves are a significant traction problem. As they fall, they tend to accumulate near the gutter. That in turn means that there is a potential vicious circle: the leaves get soaked and stick together, effectively blocking the drain and preventing water running away. So a combination of mashed up leaves and water accumulating between them quickly build up in autumn to create a possible skid area for motorists, and a difficult area to negotiate for those on two wheels such as motorcyclists. The classic problem area is a leafy avenue where a motorist is taking a corner and perhaps unaware that one or more wheels are sliding across the mulch at the same time. The darker mornings and early evenings also means that spotting surface water is not as easy at this time of year. If the road surface is black, you can’t see where pockets of water have accumulated until you hit them, which can mean a sharp, unexpected jolt on the steering wheel. Treat leaves and unseen surface water with a degree of caution and be ready to slow down a little; you need to be certain what it is you are driving on. . Autumn can also take its toll on car batteries as the first frost settles, but some basic maintenance can help to prolong battery life. The top of a battery must be clean and dry, the terminals must be tight and free from corrosion and the battery itself must be mounted securely in its tray. Modern batteries need be kept fully charged by the car's alternator. A loud screeching for the first few seconds after the engine starts, is a sure sign that the drive belt needs tightening and if this is left, a flat battery will inevitably follow, probably accompanied by a broken belt later in the year. And, if a battery is more than three years old, it is worth having it checked now to save many a frustrating start to an autumn morning.
