Some choices in life are too important to take lightly or rush. That’s why choosing the right setting for your child’s education is worth really thinking about. Outcomes at secondary school help determine life chances. South Axholme Academy prides itself on offering the very best academic, learning experience, from Year 7 to Year 13, with a wealth of extra curricular and enrichment opportunities to rival anything other schools and academies, private and state funded, can offer locally and regionally. From amazing examination results, year on year, to theatre trips, ski trips, sporting activities, bands and musical opportunities we have it all. This coupled with highly qualified pastoral staff mean that all students who attend the academy are supported to be the very best that they can be. In particular, success in our 6th Forms’ recent A level results was phenomenal with all students going on to their chosen pathway. It was with great pride and excitement that we waved students off to highly sought after courses including medicine as well as veterinary medicine on results day in August. Students in the 6th Form enjoy extremely favourable class sizes with specialist teaching staff alongside bespoke and focused one to one support in everything from applying to university to accessing funding and pastoral support generally. By choosing South Axholme Academy, you are investing wisely in your child’s future. Don’t believe us? Check out our website at www.southaxholmeacademy.co.uk with links to our latest Ofsted report, examination results and news and activities, or, contact Mrs C Tillen at the academy if you want to come along for a chat. But don’t leave it too late, many year groups are currently reaching capacity.

Community News Haxey Women’s Institute On Saturday 4th August, we held our ‘Equalitea’ to commemorate the centenary of Women’s Suffrage. We welcomed friends new and old to a very pleasant afternoon, enjoying not only a cream tea with strawberries, but also a tombola and raffle. Thank you to everyone who supported us. For our September meeting, we welcomed Alison who came to give us an opportunity to have a go at ‘felting’. This is a craft new to virtually everyone at the meeting, so we weren’t expecting to actually produce anything ourselves! However, we were given a large sponge cube and a long needle (with barbs on it!) and invited to choose some combed and dyed wool (some from Alison’s own alpacas) in order to have a go! Alison had examples of various objects that she’d made and suggested that we choose a toadstool, an acorn or a poppy to make. She demonstrated rolling the wool into a ball and ‘prodding’ it with the needle, using the sponge as a base. Nearly everyone had a go, and despite the occasional yelps (and one or two drops of blood!) as the needle prodded our fingers instead of the wool, we did indeed end up

with felted wool which began to develop into the appropriate shapes. We went home with our completed objects, together with the sponge and needle so that we could have another try at home! An enjoyable evening. Our next event will be our Harvest meeting on the first Wednesday in October, when we will be having a demonstration of Tudor dancing – and possibly having a go ourselves! As usual, our members will be providing another delicious buffet supper. On Monday November 19th, we will be setting off on our annual Christmas Shopping Trip, this time to York. This always proves to be popular with members and non-members alike and in fact, the coach is now virtually full.

Epworth and District Flower Club News After a glorious summer several members of the Epworth and District Flower Club assembled to watch Jo Smith, an area demonstrator, entertain with an evening entitled “My World of Inspiration”. Jo was welcomed back by Carolyn Drury. It was commented that the four years since Jo had previously visited had gone very rapidly. Jo began by explaining that her title had developed from her eclectic mix of “items” suitable for creating arrangements around and produced a small chair for the base of her first arrangement. She also introduced to many of the group, brown Oasis which has been developed to degrade by 52% in the first year, an incomparable development on the original Oasis. Using the chair as a support Jo arranged foliage which included rhuscus (a favourite we were to discover), peony and eucalyptus, Jo continued by inserting lilac coloured pompom dahlias, with their foliage and pale pink snowberries which made quite an impact. The second arrangement was entitled The Shard and Jo’s commentary was about her visit with her mother to The Shard in London. This time her arrangement was created using two triangular structures. Her foliage this time included cordyline, sinecio and large aspidistra leaves which she curled back onto themselves. Her flowers were white agapanthus and large red roses. This was a very striking arrangement and was accompanied by another, slightly smaller matching one made earlier by Jo. A tall piece of driftwood formed the basis for the third arrangement and Jo told her audience how she enjoyed walking along the beach at Cleethorpes when it was not too busy. The foliage to begin was large Fatsia leaves and bergenia, eucalyptus, hearts tongue fern and hosta.

18

To extend upwards Jo added autumn shaded flowers. These were red hot pokers, crocosmia, fire ferns, autumn grasses which looked like furry caterpillars and orange zinnia. A long trough was next produced and Jo proceeded to tell us of her venture into the man’s world of allotments. She used astro turf as a base and added familiar flowers such as dark crimson gladioli, agapanthus with seed pods, asters, lilies, scabious, achillea, feverfew and a pale green nicotiana. The resulting arrangement was two regular vertical displays incorporating delicate colours and showing Jo’s artistic and creative skills. Finally Jo talked about her entry for the National Nafas competition. She told us how she had always wanted to create a “dress” design and for this event she had the opportunity. She recreated her entry, which was titled Masquerade, using more rhuscus and long flowing ferns, palm leaves and other foliage before adding long sprigs of molucella (Bells of Ireland). Further flowers added were large white roses before the addition of gold sprayed and shaped palms and peacock feathers. On completion Jo placed a wire dummy of the upper body attached to which was a mask and then she placed her arrangement to appear as the skirt. It was beautiful and very dramatic. Jo informed us that she had won the Regional round but didn’t manage to win to be representing the country at the World Association of Flower Arrangement Societies. Jo was then thanked by Carolyn for her interesting and enjoyable demonstration before all of the displays were raffled off and 7 lucky people would be able to enjoy the wonderful arrangements for longer. Carolyn also reminded everyone that the next meeting on Monday, 8th October, will be a workshop. It will be held at the usual time of 7.30pm in The Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey. Members were also reminded of the Open Meeting which will be on Monday 19th November (3rd Monday not the usual 2nd Monday). This will be in South Axholme Academy hall featuring Andrew Grisewood a National Demonstrator, and entry will be by ticket only. Tickets and posters are available for purchase and display and we hope to have an evening as successful as last year. Members will have tickets and further details are available from 07887 870365 or 07730 487207

Romeo and Juliet visit Epworth Old Rectory On a glorious evening on 31st of August, Shakespeare again appeared at Epworth Old Rectory with the Handlebards' performance of Romeo and Juliet. Part of the Old Rectory's role is to be of service to the community and this performance certainly did that. The audience came from all sections of our community, from 5 year old India up to audience members in their 8th decade. They enjoyed their picnic in the grounds for an hour of more prior to the performance, ably entertained by a talented local amateur musician with a mix of folk and easily listening music, who sang again during the half way interval. His music was enjoyed by all, if the singing along, swaying and clapping had anything to do with it. Handlebards consisted of a group of four lovely, talented young actresses who kept the audience involved and enthralled with their performance, with each one taking on multiple roles within the play, including a song and dance number at the very end, which, although surprising on the night, was often an integral, part of the entertainment in Elizabethan England when these fabulous plays were first written and performed. The Rectory gardens rang with laughter during the comedy elements and quiet contemplation during the tragic parts, but no matter what was happening and where in the play I looked at the audience I saw genuine enjoyment all around, even when a member of the audience was roped in to play a dead Juliet, as the actress herself pointed out, "I can't do it, I have to be someone else!" A thoroughly enjoyable evening all round. Our thanks to Handlebards for their spirited performance, but also to all the staff and volunteers, and you know who you are, who made it such a marvellous evening. Cath Fordham

News from Haxey Church of England Primary School Welcome Back! We would like to welcome all of our students back to school, especially our new starters in FS2 who have all been superstars and have settled well into full time school. It's also great to see everyone looking so smart in their uniforms around school. We extend our welcome to a new member of teaching staff, Miss Poppy Drury who is our new year 4 teacher. Diary Dates The new school term has got off to a flying start already, with a jam packed diary full of events! First up is our coffee morning in aid of MacMillan, hosted by our children in Year 6. This will be on 28th September, with more details to follow. In previous years this event has been well attended and we have raised hundreds of pounds for this worthy cause. If you are a willing baker, we would more than welcome any cake donations on the morning. Our annual Harvest Festival is at St Nicholas Church on Monday 8th October 2018. We ask children to bring in a tin, can or packet of food, which we send to The Forge in Scunthorpe which is a food bank used by those less fortunate than ourselves, and also an item of fresh produce we make into hampers for some of our local residents in their senior years. Parking Despite the weather turning a little chillier since the glorious sunny days of the summer holidays, we do encourage students and parents to walk to school where possible. Despite having the use of our lovely parking bay along The Nooking, the road does get congested at drop off and pick up times. Can those who drive please park sensibly, without blocking drive ways of our neighbour's, and also considering others who also need to park? FS2 Our newest members of school have been busy exploring their new classroom . As you can see from the photographs taken by 'The Wonderful Years' photography, they certainly have a lot to discover. They have had lots of fun getting to know all the different indoor and outdoor areas they can use in their learning – especially the mud kitchen, the giant sandpit and the water play area! They are all settling into school life brilliantly and we are looking forward to seeing them build on this fantastic start as they move through the school year. Year 2 Our lovely year 2's have been learning about Percy the Park Keeper and acting out the stories. They are lucky enough to have their own 'Percy's Hut' to inspire them in their recreation of his stories.

Kayla, Millie, Joe, Finley & Ana- Y2 Year 5

Years 5 & 6 Year 5 and 6 are looking forward to a trip to Eden Camp as part of their World War 2 topic to experience a little of what life was like for children during the war. Year 5 have settled in really well and are very excited for the challenges in the academic year ahead. This term, they will be visiting the author Kjartan Poskitt at Hill House It’s going to be a busy term!

We are “The Haxey Helpers” and have been supporting Haxey Pre-school through organising fund-raising activities during the summer holidays. Haxey Helpers are 4 ten year old boys: Ben Varnam, Dexter Spink, Ben Roberts and Oliver Thorpe. We also have Charlie Thorpe (age 12) who attends South Axholme Academy. The Lifestyle project was introduced to us in school by the Humberside police force and straight away we knew we wanted to use our project to help support our local pre-school, as they were in danger of having to close last Christmas. We served refreshments at our school’s music morning. On 18th August, at the Community walk we organised alongside “Haxey Walkers our Welcome” group. On the walk we raised a total of £62.90. We worked with the pre-school to organise a children’s rock painting competition. This was judged by Haxey school’s headteacher, Mrs Buckle. Pre-school are now asking more people in the community to paint a rock and we are going to lay a commemorative display of the artwork in the pre-school garden. We also worked clearing weeds and tidying up the garden at pre-school, so it is nice for the children on their return. Our main challenge was to complete a sponsored climb of Mam Tor in the Peak District. Through our Just Giving page, (www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/haxeyhelpers-1) we originally set out to raise £300 for the pre-school, but we have definitely exceeded all expectations. Through sponsorship, donation buckets, competition entry money and refreshment sales, we’ll hopefully have more than £800 to donate. We’re so proud of this total. We wanted our Lifestyle project to make a difference, be lots of fun, and to include as many people from our community as possible. We have had many adventures this summer and met some great people.
