Hare coursing is reducing year on year in our area because of action taken by the police and the close working relationship with our rural communities. Force Wildlife & Rural Crime officer PC Brandon Ward said, “We have done really well together to reduce hare coursing and I don’t want that to stop. “As the harvest is now almost completed we want to remind our communities to report anyone who they suspect is hare coursing in our countryside. We have been out across the Force area in recent weeks carrying out patrols to prevent and deter criminals from coming into our area. “Hare coursers often use old 4x4s and carry lurcher-type dogs in their vehicles. If you see any vehicle being driven in a suspicious way in our countryside please call us and report your concerns. “We have also seen a number of recent reports of illegal lamping in the area and this too is a wildlife crime we want to bring an end to. “Poaching is a national wildlife crime priority and illegal ‘lampers’ are often involved in other criminality such as burglary and vehicle crime. “We want you to report any suspicious activity to us, particularly in the early hours of the morning if you suspect lamping is in progress. By letting us know as it is happening we can catch offenders in the act. “Prevention measures should be considered by landowners such as preventing easy access by vehicles to land by using obstacles, gates and other barriers. This is one of the most effective measures that can be taken to frustrate and deter these criminals.” Please call 101 to report any suspicious activity – if you call us we will act. Doncaster Movie Makers Started in the 1950's as Doncaster Cine Guild at the height of enthusiasm for cine film, Doncaster Movie Makers has evolved over the years, adapting to the changing film formats and equipment. But we are still essentially the same as the original members – keen, enthusiastic, amateur film makers, who help each other produce films and advise on new equipment and editing software. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced filmmaker, Doncaster Movie Makers exists to bring likeminded individuals together to share knowledge, have fun and explore the fascinating world of filmmaking – from script to screen. Or you might just like to watch films. We have demonstrations, visiting speakers and film competitions. As a Club we film local events and attractions, such as the Tour de Yorkshire. In 2019 we will be showing films on themes such as “What I did today” and holding competitions for films inspired by the word “AFT” and Music Videos. Our first meeting is on Wednesday 25 September at 7.30pm at Flintwood Methodist Church, Lansdowne Road, Intake Doncaster DN2 6QN and we continue to meet every week until April. DO WE NEED FRACKING? The intentions of IGas to construct up to 6 fracking sites in this area were laid out in our previous article. But do we really need this gas? Energy Security: The fracking industry claims it will be better to use ‘gas from beneath our feet’ to reduce imports, yet we still regularly export gas. In 2017 the government allowed the closure of the UK’s largest gas storage facility for ‘commercial reasons,’ i.e. to protect gas industry profits. Actually, frackers talk about reducing NET imports. Shale gas will be a marketable commodity for companies to trade to their best advantage. Ineos decline to guarantee they would not export UK shale gas. They want the gas to power and feed their chemical plants whose products include single use plastics, not to heat your homes. Cutbacks in efficiency measures: Since 2000, UK gas consumption has fallen by 22% mainly due to improving home insulation, which also brings further benefits. For example, every £1 spent on domestic insulation raises £1.27 in tax and saves 42p in health care costs. (Cambridge Econometrics.) However, there are still 16 million English homes with substandard insulation. (Band D or lower; Source: BEIS.) But due to failing government support, since 2014 there has been an 85% fall in the number of efficiency measures being installed, propping up gas demand and ongoing dependency on imports. Energy Costs: Renewables are now giving fossil fuels a run for their money. Between 2015 and 2017, the costs of offshore wind energy fell by over 50%, to nearly half that of new nuclear power stations. Onshore wind is already the cheapest energy source. Wind energy costs are falling as electricity from gas continues to rise in price; by the time shale gas is available in significant quantities it will be more expensive than both onshore and offshore wind and solar power. But what if the wind isn’t blowing? New energy storage systems will further increase the viability and economic case for renewables. A plant running on liquified air is now operational near Manchester, storing excess electricity until needed. Other systems use gravity and compressed fluids for grid scale electricity storage. A new power link now carries excess Scottish wind energy to the North West of England; before this, turbine operators would be paid NOT to generate due to inadequate grid capacity. Wave and tidal stream energy have the potential to meet up to 20% of current UK electricity demand, reliably and predictably. Meanwhile around half of the energy from fossil fuels is lost as waste heat in the combustion process at power stations. There is no doubt that challenges lie ahead for the UK to achieve affordable, reliable, clean energy, and there will be a need for some natural gas in the coming decade. However, the government’s own 2017 Gas Security of Supply report states that energy security will not be dependent upon new indigenous sources. Obstructive government policies have actively held up the required transition away from fossil fuels. The promotion of shale gas is just another example of this and there are increasing calls for fracking to be banned in the UK, whilst there is widespread and sustained public support for more renewable energy. Epworth and District Flower Club News
One beautiful lunchtime in July 159 ladies and one man attended a Lunch and Flower Arranging Demonstration. It was organised by the Epworth and District Flower Club and the local NSPCC branch and at the September meeting members of the Flower Club were informed that a magnificent sum in excess of three thousand pounds was raised. It is to be divided between the NSPCC, Diabetes UK and a charity chosen by the demonstrator, Caine of Harrogate. Having delivered the excellent news Anne Everatt, the Flower Club Chairman introduced the demonstrator for the evening. Lynn Wherret had travelled from the Leicester area and began her demonstration entitled “Ladies that have inspired me”. After the vote of thanks for a very entertaining evening about flowers and inspirational women there were more than a dozen raffle prizes for lucky members of the audience. This was followed by refreshments. Members were reminded of the next meeting, an Autumn Workshop to be held in the Stephen Jones Community Hall at 7.30pm on Monday, 14th October. In addition members took tickets to sell for the Open Meeting on 11th November when Nick Grounds will demonstrate. Nick is a National Demonstrator and has entitled his evening “The Apple Tree”. Entry on this occasion is ticket only and will be at South Axholme School. As usual the evening promises to be an entertaining evening and the Flower Club aims to raise more money for their chosen charity this year, Diabetes UK. Make sure you buy your ticket. Hirst Priory has a well-kept secret that is now ready to share. Hidden beneath the oldest part of the house is the most amazing atmospheric vaulted brick basement – “The Vaults”. Now expertly and sensitively refurbished, the subterranean rooms are open to visitors and offer a very special place for intimate and bespoke weddings and events. The Vaults ceremony room is perfect for smaller weddings and can accommodate up to 40 guests. In addition to wedding hire the venue is introducing a private members club, and offering exclusive prebooked dining and wine bar experiences. A relaxed platter and small plates style menu has been developed working with “Taste Lincolnshire” to ensure the use of locally sourced ingredients where possible. Hazel Wheatley, Managing Director of Hirst Priory and The Vaults commented “We know we have something very special indeed at The Vaults – and I love seeing the reactions of our guests when they first discover these hidden spaces. I’m really looking forward to being able to share the experience with new visitors – cosy winter weddings, delicious sharing platters and personally selected gin and wine menus.” To find out more about The Vaults, take a look at

Community News LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS TO HOST CHARITY COFFEE MORNING
LOCAL CHILDREN COMPLETE LIBRARY’S SUMMER READING CHALLENGE
Volunteers running Misterton Library will hold a coffee morning to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support on Saturday 26 October from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Everyone is welcome, whether a Library user or not – but come and have a look around, have a cup of tea or coffee and cake, and get to know the friendly volunteers.
Local children have earned a certificate for completing this year’s Summer Reading Challenge – they will be presented with awards to mark their success at Misterton Library on Saturday 21 September. Children had to read at least six books during the summer holiday, collect stickers, and solve a challenge on the theme of Space Chase. Awards will be presented by District Cllr Hazel Brand.
The Library has a wide range of books and talking CDs and volunteers are also able to order books and entertainment items from the main central libraries. Misterton Library is community-run, partnered with Inspire, and run by a group of friendly, welcoming volunteers. The Library is open from 2.30-5.00pm, Tuesday to Thursday, and from 9.30am to 12.30pm on Saturdays. Volunteers now serve a cuppa to those visiting the Library while they browse the shelves or use the public-access computers. The Library is central for the surrounding villages of West Stockwith, Beckingham, Walkeringham, Everton, and Gringley and welcomes new members.
The second annual horticultural and domestic produce show, run by Misterton Gardeners Club, attracted a record number of entries, making it a difficult job for the judges. The Show was held on Saturday 17 August. Pictured is Ann Hickman, judging the fruit and veg classes. The Royal Horticultural Society’s Banksian medal, for the most points in the Show, was awarded to Misterton resident, Ann Denny (pictured), who was presented with the medal by Dorothy Richardson, Chair of Misterton Gardeners Club.
The Library is looking for more volunteers to expand the service and increase opening hours. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact The Misterton Centre & Library on (01427) 890646 or e-mail themistertoncentre@outlook.com. Or just call in and pick up some information. Not only does volunteering help to keep the Library open, it is also an opportunity to learn new skills, build confidence, meet new people, and make new friends.

It’s been a busy return to school for everyone at Haxey Primary, but everybody has done an amazing job of settling
straight back in to all of the old routines! We have had a lot of building work in over the holidays and now have a brand new Learning Mentor room and Nurture Space, a large group room for small groups to work in, and our Year 1 outdoor area has been transformed with a canopy, grassed area, storage sheds and a new planting area - it all looks super! We have already had art workshops in Years 1 – 6 on developing a positive mindset to help us all to keep on trying with work and to develop resilience, even when things seems challenging, with Ian Brealey of The Doodle Bug. And in F2, our new children have settled in to school life really confidently and are enjoying exploring all the different areas in the F2 classroom – we are now just hoping for a bit more sun so that we can make the most of all of our outdoor areas! We wish them all a very exciting year as they start their journey through school!
