Welcome to the October issue of Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow. Good to see some news coming in from clubs in the Isle. We welcome the flower club back! If there are any clubs who would like a mention and write some editorials to promote please do send me an email. It was good news to hear the Epworth Old Rectory's first show since lockdown (Alice’s adventures in Wonderland) was a real success. We have some local lads embarking on the Three peaks challenge. Give them your support, money raised goes to a great charity MIND (the mental health charity) who offers advice and support to those experiencing mental health problems and campaigns to improve services and destigmatise issues. The deadline for the November issue is Tuesday 12th October for delivery by Sunday 31st October Enjoy the read and stay safe!

COUNCILLOR COMPLETES WALK FOR GOOD CAUSES District and Parish Councillor, Hazel Brand, has completed the 135-mile Tyne Trail and has raised £600 towards her sponsorship target of £1000. She is raising money for village organisations in Misterton and West Stockwith that were not able to apply for Government grants during lockdown: the villages’ churches and West Stockwith Village Hall.

Installations, Repairs, Landlord Certificates and all general plumbing works. Installation of Oil Tanks and bases to meet the required regulations

Call Darren 0752 6251 290

Hazel is pictured at the source of the South Tyne in Cumbria, alongside the sculpture by Gilbert Ward that marks the spot. “The first leg we walked was the North Tyne, which begins on the Scottish border – it was pouring with rain. But things got better and although the last day of walking started wet, by the time we reached Tynemouth it was glorious sunshine,” Hazel said. “Many thanks to all those who have sponsored me so generously – it’s real encouragement when the going gets tough to know that people back home have put their faith in me to complete the walk!”

The Epworth and District Flower Club held another semi outdoor meeting in August. At fairly short notice a theme of Sunflowers was taken and three very able members created very different arrangements. The size of the sunflowers was larger than expected. They had been purchased from a local enterprising farmer and were delivered in milk churns as they were so enormous. Their size caused some amusement and a little concern for the demonstrators. However the skills of the members meant they were able to produce a variety of arrangements. To the dismay of those watching several long stems were cut short but the lower arrangements were very attractive and could be placed on a dinner table while some taller arrangements would grace any room. Just garden foliage was incorporated into the arrangements thus encouraging even the lass creative members to have a go for themselves. In addition to the seven arrangements there were parcels of five sunflowers to supplement the raffle prizes. A wonderfully relaxing evening was had by all. Linda Clark of The Spotted Dog Flower Company will be demonstrating to the Club at the September meeting in St Andrew's Church which is being used as a temporary venue but the October meeting will be in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey. That evening will host Lucie Griffin of Branching Out from Retford and will be on Monday, 11th October at 7.30pm. As the Club was unable to meet last year the Diamond Celebration has been postponed until Monday, 8th November 2021. Arrangements are in hand to have a meal at The Reindeer Inn Sandtoft and this will be preceded by a demonstration entitled "A Winter's Night". Mark Entwhistle had been booked for the evening when it was anticipated we would have the Annual Open Meeting but he has agreed to reduce the size of his demonstraPleaseonly mention when responding to advertisements tion8so members should be“The in for a Arrow” treat. In early October (Friday 1st to Monday 4th) our group of 12 young chaps are embarking on the National Three Peaks Challenge. The aim of this is to climb the three highest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike) and Wales (Snowdon) within 24 hours. Over the past year, Covid has impacted heavily on the mental health of people of all ages and backgrounds which has made the work of charities like MIND more important than ever! To put this in some kind of perspective, 1 in 4 people experiences a mental health problem each year (pre-Covid). This has increased throughout the pandemic, particularly among young people. Everyone will know someone who has suffered with their mental health at some stage in their life, with all of us doing this being no strangers to the impact mental health issues can have on people close to us. With this in mind (pardon the terrible pun), it only seemed right to focus our fundraising efforts here. Spending time outdoors is a great way to improve your mood and reduce feelings of stress and anger, and although the National Three Peaks Challenge takes this to a slight extreme, it does you good out into nature. MIND (the mental health charity) offers advice and support to those experiencing mental health problems and campaigns to improve services and destigmatise issues. This is an issue close to all of us as young people and young men particularly, but it's something which has a bearing on everyone. Your donations, however large or small, can help in so many ways; - A donation of £8 could offer a lifeline to someone in desperate need of support by letting the MIND Infoline team answer their call. - A donation of £15 could help us campaign for better access to talking therapies, crisis care and other essential mental health service. - A donation of £21 could keep Elefriends, MINDS online support community, running for one hour. Our initial fundraising target of £350 has been well surpassed. Our new target is going to be £1,000! You can find all of the above information on the Justgiving page/link below, this includes updates detailing our warm up and preparation that we’ve been doing for the challenge, as well as a good explanation of how donations can help MIND make a difference. What a Show Thursday evening at Epworth Old Rectory was cool but fine when they opened the doors to a mixed crowd of theatre goers. Chapterhouse Theatre Company from Lincoln were presenting Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The six young actors had been on site from lunchtime setting up there stage and scenery, getting costumes and props sorted and making time for a late lunch /early tea in the refectory. Gates opened at 5-30 to let in the ones who had arrived a little early and admit a steady flow of people with their picnics, chairs and rugs, with one group even bringing in Fish and Chip suppers. everyone was settled and expectant ready for the curtains rising at 6-30. And what a treat they all got. The stage and scenery were well designed and constructed ready for the actors to take centre stage. They filled the evening with Drama, Music and Laughter to delight the audience who joined in wholeheartedly. The costumes and props were beautifully planned and fitted the performance. A triumph all round for both audience and actors, with the finishing touch from Chapterhouse being to allow family photographs to be taken with Alice and the White Rabbit. This was particularly good for the members of the audience who had arrived dressed as Alice and the Mad Hatter. Comments from the audience as they were leaving were very good, many praised the quality of the stage setting and costumes as being much better than other open air theatre productions they had seen. They had loved the performance and praised the six young actors for making their evening so enjoyable, and thanked the rectory for staging the performance and providing a safe environment for them all to attend. All in all, a great evening for all concerned. Keep an eye on the Rectory Website and Facebook page for any further information on events and daily opening information. or even better, come and join as a volunteer in sales and reception or as a guide and To get the information before anyone else.532676 or 07912 643010 advertise please call 01302 15 Cath Fordham

It has been lovely to welcome all of our children back to Haxey after the summer - and especially wonderful to return to a more "normal" existence, with an end to class bubbles, eating in classrooms and zoned off play areas! The children have loved being able to mix more freely and our older children are doing an amazing job of supporting the younger members of our school as they get used to a busier hall at lunchtime and the reintroduction of old routines throughout the school that they haven't experienced for the past 18 months. We are especially excited to welcome our new F2 class to the school. They are settling in beautifully, making lots of new friends and having a fab time exploring the different areas of our F2 classroom and outdoor area. With the lovely sunny weather that we have been blessed with, the sand pit and the water areas have proved particularly popular, as has the mud kitchen! They have also paired up with our Year 6 class for a Friday afternoon reading club - the Year 6s are so excited! Elsewhere in school, Years 3-6 have all started learning Spanish as our Modern Foreign Language, and lots of our keen footballers are already feeling that this will help to secure them with a playing contract at Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Year 6 are already engrossed in their World War 2 topic and are looking forward to their trip to Eden Camp to get a deeper understanding of what life would have been like for them as children during the war. Year 4 are taking good care of our new teacher, Mr Smythe, and working hard to find out about life in Ancient Greece, and Year 2 are undertaking a local area study, which will result in some very creative new rides being designed for the park here in Haxey! It's already shaping up to be a very busy year here at Haxey we look forward to all the challenges ahead!
