Epworth and District Flower Club
On a cool September evening the Flower Club met at their usual venue of St Andrew’s Church Epworth. The audience was slightly smaller than usual as several members were away enjoying a late summer holiday. There was also an element of illness and the original demonstrator herself had withdrawn due to ill health. However, Toni Gravel the Fountain Court Florist replaced her and entertained with a demonstration based somewhat on autumn and autumn fruits. She told her audience that the arrangements were to be of a suitable size for display on a table which was a very acceptable size especially for the lucky raffle winners. One arrangement actually incorporated vegetables and a wreath was created entirely using sprigs of ivy which is currently flowering beautifully. The evening was enjoyed by all and Toni demonstrated that beauty can be found in gerbera, gorgeous green chrysanthemums, roses, anthuriums and even broccoli.
The next meeting of the Flower Club will be held at 7.30 pm on Monday, 14th October when Marie Bradley will give a demonstration probably entitled “From India with Love”. However the following month, November, sees the Open Evening when the Flower Club hosts Mark Entwistle. He will demonstrate in South Axholme Academy hall. Tickets for this event usually sell quickly so make sure you have yours.

COFFEE MORNING
Saturday August 31st. It was a sunny morning, which no doubt encouraged people to get out and certainly pleased the organisers of the event to raise money for The Alzheimer’s Society. Janet, Lydia and Debbie plan to join the Alzheimer Walk in Clumber Park In October but decided to raise funds beforehand and heighten awareness of this very worthwhile charity.
Haxey Church Hall was full of people enjoying tea/coffee and a wonderful selection of cakes while meeting friends old and new. The table holding Raffle prizes was laden and those selling tickets were kept busy throughout the morning. A vase of flowers and a teapot for donations were central to each table. There really was a very happy atmosphere and the excellent sum of £700 was raised. (further donations can still be made )
Many congratulations to Janet and her team for organising the event; and to all the people who volunteered and helped in so many ways –WELL DONE!

Westwoodside Village Hall and the Royal British Legion News
On 8th June 2024, Westwoodside Village Hall hosted a display of 1940’s military and civilian vehicles in the carpark as part of the Parish Council’s commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. This display, plus others inside the hall, drew many visitors and the village hall committee provided refreshments to everyone free of charge. The visitors were able to show their appreciation of the event by making a donation to the Royal British Legion. The donations were then passed on to the RBL and we are very happy to report that the total received was £102.15. The RBL send thanks to everyone who contributed so generously on the day, and also to the village hall committee who helped to make this possible. Our thanks to everyone who made the day such a success.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST
We have an exciting bit of news for you. Do you remember when the UK held the 2012 Olympics and various flag bearers around the country were given the honour of carrying the Olympic torch? In Doncaster that honour fell to Ben Parkinson and afterwards he very kindly donated his Olympic scarf to our charity to raise funds. Jeannette Fish, who was our founder member until she passed away in May 2018, kept it with the intention of auctioning it off. The scarf has recently come to light and we would like to fulfil Jeannette’s wishes by putting it up for auction. It seems an appropriate time to do it with the success of the Paris Paralympic team in September. The scarf has the date “29.08.12” at the top with the words “talent, pride and determination” underneath it, plus “Our greatest team” along the bottom. It measures approximately 34 inches/86 cms square. We would please request that all bids be sent to our office Email address: info@dcdt.co.uk along with your name and contact details to reach us no later than 25th October 2024.
We would like to remind you about our annual Memory Tree which will be held in the Frenchgate Centre from Monday, 25th November to Saturday, 7th December (excluding Sunday, 1st December) from 10am to 3pm daily. We have an interesting variety of new tokens to purchase in memory of your loved ones.
Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (passageway to the left of “Bake Battle & Roll), first floor (lift available), Room 104. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk Website: dcdt.co.uk. As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone in advance if you are thinking of coming to see us.
Don’t forget to Email us your bid by 25th October. Good luck everyone!

We finished our summer term on a high with a combined cub, scout and seniors camp. We played games on the beach and the field, jumped waves, dug holes and hunted for shells. Our main Saturday activity was a longer hike to test our navigation and fitness.
The weather didn't dampen our spirits and lots of fun was had by all.
Obviously none of these camps happen without the hard work and dedication of the helpers.
Today we celebrate Andrew, who has completed 15 (yes 15!!!) camps, he has been head chef and I am sure the scouts/cubs will tell you what a great job he does (they certainly don’t go home hungry!)
Andrew lowered the flag on camp, which is set to be his last camp before he enjoys his retirement. I am sure you will all agree this is pretty epic. He has ably handed over the baton to David! All enquiries about Scouts or Beavers should go to Gregor on: gagibb79@aol.com, and Cub enquiries should go to Ma hieu at: ma hieu_maloigne@mentor.com.

Our Kiln Dried Firewood Logs are selected from the finest hardwood and have been through a kiln drying process, which means they are perfectly dried and ready to burn on your open fire or wood burning stove.
Light, clean and easy to handle, they also emit a delightful aroma when burnt. The performance of your stove is directly related to the quality of the wood you use. Our kiln dried wood has a moisture content between 10 and 20 percent, ensuring it burns hotter for longer, increasing the efficiency of your stove or appliance.
