Arrow offers half price Entry fee to Epworth Old Rectory Your Arrow has teamed up with The Epworth Old Rectory to offer its readers an exclusive deal - for a limited period - to visit the historic museum at half the normal entrance fee And, as an added bonus, from now until the end of October, when the arrangement will cease, there is the added attraction of a display of some of the world's best Christian art – on loan from the Department of Methodist Studies at Oxford Brooks University. “The Methodist art collection was first established more than 40 years ago and is probably they best in the country,” said Gill Crawley, Development Manager at The Old Rectory.

Normally the entrance fee for a guided tour is £5.50 per head but by presenting a copy of The Arrow at the ticket desk a couple can gain admission for just £2.75 each. The quality of the art collection is such that there is a demand to display it around the world and recently the works were on display in Ballymena in Ireland. “The Old Rectory Trustees are enormously pleased, privileged and proud to have these artworks on display here,” added Mrs Crawley. Epworth's Old rectory is famous throughout the world as the childhood home of John and Charles Wesley, the brothers who formed a movement that went on to become the worldwide Methodist Church. The Old Rectory is open from10.30am until 3.30pm from Tuesdays to Saturdays. Last admissions are 30 minutes before closing. For further information please call (01427) 872268.

ENJOY THE ISLE COUNTRYSIDE WHILST SUPPORTING A LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUP A local community group, Axholme Bridleways Association, welcomes guests to their meetings, which are approximately every six weeks. The Axholme Greenway project is one area the group is involved in, which will provide more safe, off-road routes for multiusers locally and will benefit future generations too. With this in mind, Axholme Bridleways Association wishes to involve cyclists, runners, walkers, dog walkers and riders in all its activities, some of which raise a few funds for local charities whilst helping our local community and visitors enjoy the wonderful countryside we are blessed with on the Isle. The group welcomes members who can give a small amount of time to jointly achieve great things. Local speakers are invited to meetings and this year the group have enjoyed talks from Lyn Dobson of L4Learners Dog Training, Jodi Shanahan of Equo equestrian event online booking system, Hayley or Wellbeings Therapies, and local Paralympic Dressage hopeful Natasha Adkinson, who at just 21 years old has many wonderful achievements as a member of the GB Squad on the World Class Equestrian Programme. Please come along and find out what is happening locally within the group and hear talks from interesting local people and organisations. This month and every month read

THE W.W.2 DIARY OF CLIFFORD SPENCER 1764164 Gunner. SPENCER Clifford 27 L.A.A. (Light Ack Ack) Regt, R.A. (Royal Artillery) (107 Bty. (Battery)) Adapted & edited for publication by Anthony E. Catherall

July 13th. We left Brindisi. First we are all searched, my knife and lock and petrol lighter which you bought me darling years ago went. We travel by train this time, in cattle trucks, but much better than Lorries, more room and seats in. By now I’ve seen a good bit of Italy, plenty of wild country, never seen anything grown but vines, in an odd field here and there. One could see a couple of oxen pulling some sort of plough. The streets were dirty and the houses looked like second class wogs, the people did too, they sure looked in a terrible state, one wonders how they could last another year of war. As we passed by the houses, women and children would be stood at the doors, some laughing; some with tears in their eyes. I expect some had sons of their own POWs. Just glances in the houses showed concrete floors, old tables and wooden boxes, altogether very untidy. I wonder what they really thought of us, for what a sight we really looked. All of us wanted a shave; some had long beards, some had half a shirt on, some had slits in, and plenty without any at all. All kinds of head gear, from a toupee to a piece of rag. I myself had a piece of field dressing. Some had K.D. shorts, some long, and in the same state as the shirts. Footgear was the same. On one arm we had a top coat and the other a blanket, and a bundle slung over our backs, but it took more than that to get us down, we kept bursting into songs, big and small, walking in any order, it sure was a sight. So after leaving Brindisi we arrive 24 hours later, travelling all night at Capua, Camp 66, near Naples. Search again, this time they take my Aspros, bandages which I had managed to keep, also a bottle of iodine what had been salvaged from the sea. Even took my bootlaces. Once again we are put in tents, dirty places, but plenty of water for a change. What money we had we gave it in, and got a receipt for it, I handed in 95 pesetas. We got three parcels a week between five men. The first Sunday we were there a young man held a service, the first we had since been POW, a lot attended, I think that we all wanted to thank God, and sing his praise for bringing us safely through. The biggest laugh we had was when we went to be debugged again, first we stripped all off, went into a place where we had every bit of hair off our head, could not have been much barer had they shaved it off. That’s the first time I had my hair cut naked. We then had hot showers, but even after that lots of us still had sand caked in what bit of hair that was left on, meanwhile our clothes were getting steamed, what was left, some of the chaps by now had nothing but a towel round their body, they had flogged everything for bread, and cigs off the guards. Shirts, socks, boots, fountain pens, rings, everything one could mention. the Ities wanted the clothing, they wore no socks, their boots were falling to pieces, their clothes shabby and torn, the price of the things were 3 loaves for a pair of socks, 6 for a pullover, 6 for boots, and 7 for a tin of coffee, by the way their loaves weighed just the same as a tin of cocoa. On the whole, the English man certainly surprised me, they stole their own mates stuff and flogged it to the Ities, that’s all I’ll say about it it’s not for me to judge them; there were also some decent chaps. I was then mating on with Les, Len and Bill; we were all on the same post, in the desert. After ten days we moved into huts which was much better with the lights in, they had to be out by 10.30pm. Double decked beds, me on the bottom, we had our first pay-day there, the first one wasn’t much, and by the way we get a (one) lira a day. We had which“The sold apples, melons, grapes, peaches to andadvertisements sweets, if one wanted 18 a canteen Pleasethere, mention Arrow” when responding anything you had to queue up all day for it.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS West Butterwick and St Martin’s (Owston Ferry) C of E Primary Schools

Following our Summer Break we have returned refreshed for the new academic year. We have all made a positive and enthusiastic start. There are plenty of interesting learning experiences unfolding at both schools since the beginning of the Autumn Term. West Butterwick Infants have started the term with the theme of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. Working in small teams, in ‘Design Technology’ lessons, these pupils have made bridge structures out of newspapers, with the challenge of ‘whose bridge is the strongest?’ : tested out by ‘numbers of cubes’ bridges could withstand.

West Butterwick Junior pupils are learning all about ‘Our Incredible World’, giving consideration to how natural forces have been shaping our planet for billions of years and the dramatic changes that are brought about through this. This thinking will be extended to ‘conservation of our planet’ and the resources that Earth offers. The art work linked to this has been most enjoyable so far.

Some of the youngest pupils at St Martin’s have been getting to grips this term with cycling, starting out on a ‘First Step Cycle – Pre Pedal Course’. This is a fun way for children to get active and keep fit. ‘Pre Pedal’ uses specialist Balance Bikes that don’t need pedals. The children concentrate on the core skills of balance and gross motor control needed to perfect riding without having to use stabilisers, which makes progression on to conventional bikes easier. There are a series of lessons planned over the next six weeks, led by qualified instructors. Who knows – we may have the next Chris Froome or Bradley Wiggins right here, learning to cycle in Owston Ferry! Both St Martin’s and West Butterwick are pleased to announce that they have been awarded GOLD in the Sainsbury’s School Games Mark – this is a Government-led awards scheme that rewards schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and in to the community. Baking Club now runs at both schools and there are plans for African food tasting this term. Thank you to ‘Nanna Cakes’ (Janet Foreman) for all of her input at St Martin’s and West Butterwick with the cooking and baking throughout the year. At this time of year, we also run the School Councillor Elections. West Butterwick Councillors have been confirmed as :- Amy J Year 1, Lyla Rose Year 2, Harvey Year 3, Levi Year 4, Cerys Year 5 and Miya Year 6. We look forward to hearing about the forthcoming projects School Councillors are to be involved in. St Martin’s School Council will be confirmed shortly. Harvest Festival Services will take place on Friday 2nd October (St Martin’s Church) and Friday 9th October (St Mary’s Church). We look forward to an enjoyable, productive and interesting term!

WROOT TRAVIS CHARITY CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL NEWS School was a very busy place over the summer:

 A new bi-fold door was fitted to the Foundation Stage covered area to create an outdoor/indoor creative area.   

The wooden benches were concreted into the field. The outdoor classroom was given a new floor.

The new, extended playground was painted with a multi-purpose pitch and lots of games such as hopscotch and snakes and ladders.

We have two new teachers: Mrs Judge and Mrs Higginson. Mrs Judge is teaching KS1 and the Foundation Stage. Mrs Higginson has KS2.

Our KS2 children are very busy organising our annual Macmillan Coffee Morning on Friday 25th September. There will be hot and cold drinks, cakes, games and entertainment from South Axholme’s Wind Band.

News from Haxey Church of England Primary School We've said our goodbyes to summer and now welcome all children back who have settled into school ready for the Autumn term. All the children have welcomed new teachers Mrs Kelly, Mrs Colley and Miss Vaughan into the school, and we have enjoyed all sorts of activities during this new term, including a music workshop and a family picnic on 11th September. Luckily the weather was on our side and the sun shone brightly as the children tucked into their snacks alongside their teddies. Thanks to all parents and carers that supported the school. Please watch out for new events as term progresses. On Thursday 24th September our year 6 class held a coffee morning in aid of MacMillan. They served delicious cakes alongside tea and coffee. At the time of going to press the amount raised is still not known. Well done to year 6 and thank you to those who attended. The funds raised will really make a difference to those whose lives are touched by cancer. On 28th September the school held their annual Harvest Festival at St Nicholas' Church, where each class presented about Harvest and where our food comes from. Thank you to Rev. Green for hosting the service and providing a warm welcome at church. The children really do enjoy going. Food collected by the children will be distributed locally and will also support local charities. The PTFA (Parents, Teachers and Friends Association) recently met for their annual meeting. The PTFA members are not employed by school, and volunteer their time for free to raise funds for the benefit of the children at school. Last year they raised a staggering £4270 via various events including summer and winter fayre's, discos, Easter bingo, cake raffles, book sales, pre-loved uniform sales, clothing collections and Santa's grotto. They are always appreciative of any help or donations on offer. There is a PTFA board at school (next to year 2 class room and reception) containing contact details. Please try to support their events, last year they paid for the annual pantomime, leavers disco and year 6 pizza's, and put thousands towards the play equipment in the school field. Membership is free and as a parent of a child in school grants automatic membership. We must say an enormous thank you to Jo Young who leaves her post as chair, and to Tracy Johnson who leaves as secretary, without which the PTFA would not run as smoothly as it has done! Until next time!

The governors at Haxey School are recruiting a co-opted governor from within the community. This person must have good community/business links and be willing to develop skills and gain new experiences. They must have an interest in the children's futures, have a desire to make a difference and have a willingness to accept responsibility and work in a team. If you believe you have these skills please get in touch with the school on 01427 752294 and ask to speak to Jo Buckle, interim head teacher.

Sector 2 Battle of Britain Parade By: Flt Lt J Docherty - Dept. MCO, South and West Yorkshire Wing Over one hundred Air Cadets from Sector 2 of South and West Yorkshire Wing came together, along with their staff and the 148 (Barnsley) Squadron band, to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, with a parade and service at Doncaster Air Museum.

The parade formed up for a march past outside the Doncaster Air Museum main hanger. The reviewing officer was Air Vice Marshal (retd) Alan Johnson, who took the salute. The march passed was accompanied by the cadet band from 148 (Barnsley) Squadron.

Following the march past, the assembled dignitaries, including representatives of many of the local ex-services associations, Association Standards and Squadrons Banners entered the main hanger for the service of remembrance, led by Revd. Neil Redeyoff. The cadets also assembled in the hanger to hear and participate in the service. Following the service, the dignitaries assembled in an adjoining building, for a brief refreshment break, while the cadets exited the hanger. A small contingent of cadets was selected, representing the majority of the Squadrons present, to be inspected by the Air Vice Marshal. He took great pride in speaking to and thanking the cadets for their dedication and effort put into the parade and service. Parade Commander, Squadron Leader Iain Kirk, Sector 2 Commander/South & West Yorkshire Wing Staff Officer was delighted with this year’s event. “Reflecting on the Parade, I am very proud of all who represented the Sector“, he continued “All cadets and staff were well turned out and represented the Air Cadet Organisation in a professionally in a very moving ceremony” This sentiment was echoed by Flight Sergeant Nicolas Holdridge, the parade Warrant Officer, who had this to say after the parade “Awesome show this evening. We all have some fantastic cadets in our ranks, a true pleasure to see them parading” The Battle of Britain was the first decisive battle in history that was fought entirely in the air. From May to September 1940 Luftwaffe attacks moved away from the coast and shipping targets to RAF airfields and associated infrastructure, but a strategic response and great bravery and skill from the RAF and Allied pilots gave Britain an advantage and Germany was unable to achieve its objective of destroying our air defences and attaining air superiority, required for their planned invasion of Britain. The attacks reached their maximum intensity on 15th September 1940. In his famous speech Churchill spoke of the sacrifices made during this period saying “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” Sector 2 of South & West Yorkshire Wing covers the whole Doncaster and surrounding areas, also encompassing Goole and Crowle. The 8 Squadrons within the Sector are open to any air minded potential cadet who is aged 12 or above (And at least in year 8). Parade such as this one are just one of the many community activities the Squadrons are involved in, as well as teaching the cadets aviation related subjects, participating in flying, adventure training, visits to RAF Stations many other532676 activities. information To advertise pleaseand call 01302 or More 07912 643010 can be found39 on the Wing website, www.aircadetsyorkshire.com.

“ This gorgeous boy is George, an older boy who is looking for his new home. George has come in as a stray and we believe he is around 13-15 years old. He is a very affectionate, cuddly cat who purrs all the time, and we are looking for a nice retirement home for him where he can spend his last few years on a comfy lap! George would be ideal for an older person wanting a companion. He does like to wander around the garden, but doesn’t go very far. If you are interested in meeting George, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705.”
