MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT BIG COFFEE MORNING Friday 30th September Epworth Imperial Hall 10.00 – 2.00 (lunch time snacks available or bring your own!) Raffle, Tombola, Cakes, Produce, Plants, Books, Jigsaws, Children’s toys It is that time of year again to draw your attention to the Macmillan BIG Coffee Morning, to be held at Epworth Imperial Hall, Chapel St, on Friday 30th September from 10.00am to 2.00pm. As well as tea, coffee, cakes and a raffle there will be the usual stalls such as tombola, books, cakes, plants, jigsaws, with the addition of games and children’s toys. By keeping it going over the lunch period we are inviting people to drop in for some savoury items on sale, or just bring your own sandwiches and have a coffee and chat. Money raised will help support services in our local area. The Scunthorpe and Goole Macmillan Cancer Support group has raised well over £1million since it started. Not only does this help to fund Macmillan nurses, but also to provide grants for local patients in need of financial assistance with anything from which they will benefit, such as transport costs, shower installations, etc. It also funds the Macmillan information centres at Scunthorpe, Goole and Grimsby hospitals, all manned by local volunteers.
Misterton’s annual Harvest Festival is on Sunday 2 October at 10.30am at the Methodist Church. The village service is a chance to give thanks for the harvest and having plenty to eat – while remembering those without. So everyone is invited to bring along a gift for Bassetlaw Food Bank, which provides food parcels for people in financial difficulty. The service is followed by lunch at 12 noon – a two-course hot lunch is £6. Transport to the service is available. To book lunch, or for more details, call 752386 or 891376.

This lovely boy is Freddie, a 5 year old Tabby cat. Freddie has been handed into the Rescue by his owners as he became very stressed at the arrival of their new baby. Freddie is a lovely, affectionate cat who seems fine with other cats, but would obviously be best in a home with older children. He is just one of our lovely cats, who are all looking for their new homes- all are neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you would like to come and meet Freddie or any of our other cats, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705.

A top Canadian folk trio will be appearing at Epworth’s Thurlow Pavilion in October as part of the North Lincolnshire Council sponsored Rural Touring programme. They are Red Moon Road, who are making a return to the UK to promote their latest album 'Sorrows and Glories' and will be appearing at the venue on Friday, October 14. The trio have been described as Canada's most enduring, modern folk group with three-part harmonies that unveil a much bigger sound than expected in an impressive and well-choreographed show. The show at the Thurlow Pavilion, which is a registered charity, will commence at 8.00pm and tickets are already on sale. They cost £8.00 each and are available from the women's top fashion shop – Serendipity – on Epworth's High Street or by telephoning (01427) 872491. Anyone attending is advised to bring their own drinks and nibbles and to arrive ahead of what will be a show bordering on a spectacle.
News from Haxey Church of England Primary School It's great to back at school ready and refreshed for the new term. We would like to extend a warm welcome back, especially to our new children starting in FS2. Everyone across the school look super smart in their uniforms, and there is a real air of enthusiasm around our school, which has been helped along by the weather which has been kind to us. During the holidays we have invested in some major improvements not only to the school building but also in our classrooms. New upgraded fencing now surrounds our western side of the school making the FS2 and year 1 outside areas much more secure, along with the car park. The existing metal railings surrounding the playground have been given a lick of black paint to tie in with the newer fencing. Inside school, each classroom has been deep cleaned and some have been redecorated, and in partnership with the school, the PTFA have contributed towards the £25000 cost of installing 'smart boards'. Along with these amazing pieces of equipment came laptops, which 'speak' to the smart boards delivering a truly interactive lesson. They have been a hit so far and we hope the children's learning will be enriched by these new additions. The outside area in FS2 will also see the addition of a mud kitchen and sandpit we hope the children will enjoy playing in. Our ever popular after school clubs will begin again soon. We are happy to announce that after maternity leave, Miss Nichola of ENA Dance academy will return with her ever popular dance club, along with Nana Cakes and her baking club. Pupils will be dusting off their football boots for 780 and their coaching sessions, along with Code club. If you have a hobby you are happy to share and incorporate in an after school club, please get in touch with our admin team or call into the school. We are part of this wonderful community and enjoy learning for its diverse membership. We will soon be attending up at St Nicholas Church for our annual Harvest Festival, with donations from children being distributed amongst those less fortunate than ourselves. As a Church School we have a distinctive Christian ethos and this festival is an important date in our calendar. Our PTFA will be meeting soon to plan some exciting events throughout the school year. Sponsor a room and help a hospice patient such as Andrew You can make a difference during Hospice Care Week by helping patients such as Andrew Smith, 46, who has a rare terminal illness that leaves him breathless and unable to complete basic daily tasks. The hospice is launching a “Sponsor A Patient Room” campaign to enable patients such as Andrew, from Bottesford, to have a more comfortable, homely stay during their last moments at Lindsey Lodge Hospice in Scunthorpe. Andrew, who has seven children, has a rare form of pneumonia that progressed to pulmonary fibrosis, and he’s gone from being a fit healthy engineer to being unable to work and at one point dropping under 8 stone. After a holiday in August 2011 Andrew was admitted to hospital for a year after feeling lethargic and getting blotches on his face. He had to undergo three lung operations in the space of eight weeks to try and save his lungs. “The care I receive at Lindsey Lodge is second-to-none,” said Andrew, who’s had the life-debilitating illness for 5 years. “I’ve been in and out of the hospice for the past 5 months and it never ceases to amaze me how phenomenal this place, especially because it’s run mostly from funds donated by the public.” The hospice on Burringham Road has to raise 79% of its funds to run the vital service that cares for 150 local people every week with end of life illnesses. The money it receives is purely spent on patient care which is why patient rooms haven’t been refurbished for 15 years and the hospice, and Andrew, is urgently calling for business or individuals to help with their “Sponsor A Room” campaign during Hospice Care Week commencing 3rd October. “It would be great if businesses could join forces to update patient rooms,” added Andrew. “I think it would make a real difference to make it more modern and up-to-date.” Julie Cole, facilities officer from Lindsey Lodge Hospice, is launching the campaign to revitalise eight patient rooms and it will cost £2,000 per room to refurbish them with durable, modern furniture, furnishings and decorating. “We are looking for business or individuals to come forward and help improve our patients comfort and surroundings,” said Julie. “Over the past 15 years the furnishings have had unavoidable wear and tear so we think it’s time to renew it all and refresh our look in Spring. “No matter how small or large the donation it would be much appreciated and will be recognised on a thank you plaque in the room.” If you are able to help please contact Julie from Lindsey Lodge Hospice on 01724 270835 or email Julie.cole4@nhs.net Lindsey Lodge Hospice is also celebrating during Hospice Care Week (3rd to 9th October) with 15 events including; Public Open Evenings 5pm to 7.30pm Monday to Friday, Visits For Professionals 12pm to 1pm and 5pm to 7.30pm Monday to Friday and Afternoon Tea At The Dennis Nash Exhibition from 2.30pm to 4.30pm on Saturday at Lindsey Lodge Hospice. Community News
Do You Enjoy The Great Outdoors ? Local Community Group Seeks Support
The Isle of Axholme is very fortunate to have some great local countryside to enjoy on foot, bicycle or horseback and all generations wish to preserve these safe off road routes for all users. Bridleways are not just for horses and the community group, Axholme Bridleways Association formed in 2012 to promote the use of bridleways by all users and help preserve local routes. We are working positively with North Lincolnshire Council with the creation of the Axholme Greenway bridleway to link Isle villages using part of a Heritage Lottery Grant. Axholme Bridleways Association has well over 100 members who are walkers, runners, dog walkers, cyclists and horse riders and meets approximately every 6-8 weeks (see website or facebook page for up to date information). It is important that local people understand about the 2026 ruling of The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000, which states that rights of way in existence on 1 January 1949 but not on the definitive map and statement by 1 January 2026 will be lost forever. The Axholme Bridleways Association Secretary, Dennis Oliver, is a member of the Local Access Form and is helping with the Council Project 'North Lincolnshire's Lost Ways' which is researching lost routes prior to 2026. Local people are invited to liaise with Axholme Bridleways Association regarding routes they use to ensure that these are all noted on our local definitive maps. Axholme Bridleways Association members enjoy events such as walks and fun days to raise funds and have contributed over £2000 to local charities including Lindsey Lodge Hospice, Lincs/Notts Air Ambulance, Macmillan Cancer Care, Isle Rescue, Mayflower Sanctuary, Bransby Horses, Rossington Riding for the Disabled, Natural England and TIA Rescue. The group always welcomes new members. Membership is just £5 for a year and as well as supporting the group, all adult members receive many discount vouchers kindly donated by local businesses. Find us on facebook or via the website www.axholmebridleways.co.uk
