A NEW PHYSIOTHERAPY SERVICE FOR THE ISLE! Are you, or is someone you know suffering from back pain, a sports injury, whiplash or arthritis? If so, Steven Speers can help. Steven is an experienced musculoskeletal Physiotherapist who also works for a local Primary Care Trust. He has successfully implemented a physiotherapy service at two outlying GP practices as part of his NHS role. Living on the Isle, Steven understands the need for such a service in the rural setting and is delighted to be bringing his private physiotherapy practice to Epworth Leisure Centre. “It‟s a fantastic opportunity for me to work within my own locality” Steven says. “Epworth is at the
heart of the community and already provides many key services. I understand the difficulties facing patients in rural areas such as the Isle of Axholme who have to travel some distance for physiotherapy treatment. It‟s especially difficult for the elderly and people without transport. Patients are often faced with long waiting lists which is as frustrating for Physiotherapists as it is for patients. It‟s proven to be vastly effective treating patients soon after injury or diagnosis as delaying can add further complications and often prolong recovery. For this reason, I think Epworth is the ideal location for a private physiotherapy clinic and I look forward to serving my local community”. Steven trained at the University of Bradford where he met his wife, a Radiographer. After graduating, they moved to Steven‘s native Isle of Man where they worked for 3 years at the island‘s Nobles Hospital. It was here Steven completed his junior rotation, sampling the different disciplines of physiotherapy including orthopaedic (bones and joints), paediatric (children) and stroke rehabilitation. The Isle of Man, being most famous for the TT races gave both Steven and his wife a great deal of experience in motorcycle related trauma. In 2005, the couple returned briefly to marry at Haxey. Steven‘s wife, originally from Westwoodside, convinced him to swap one ‗isle‘ for another and in 2007 they both moved back to England and settled in Owston Ferry where they now live with their daughter. Steven has gained plenty of experience since moving to Lincolnshire. He has undertaken a postgraduate course in the use of acupunture and is a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP). He plans to offer this service to his private patients. Steven decided to specialise in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and is now holds a senior position overseeing junior members of staff. ―Junior Physiotherapists and students certainly keep me on my toes‖ laughs Steven. ―Professionally it‘s good for me as an individual as teaching others keeps the theory in the forefront of my mind. It‘s constant revision for me‖. Steven is required to make presentations to colleagues and students as part of his ongoing learning. As with all healthcare professionals, Steven is required to produce a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) portfolio to prove his commitment to the profession and demonstrate ways he has improved his practice. He is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (CSP) and Health Professions Council (HPC) so patients can be assured he is qualified and a true professional. Patient confidentiality is guaranteed. Details can be found at www.csp.org.uk and www.hpc-uk.org Steven holds clinics at Epworth Leisure Centre. For details, advice and appointments please contact Steven on 07593914211

Haxey Parish Plan Action Group Haxey parishioners are now able to view the content of the Haxey Parish Plan. Following the launch event held at the end of July, a copy of the Plan can be viewed at Haxey Library or on-line at www.haxeyparish.org.uk. The Haxey Parish Plan is a document which reflects how local people wish to see the area develop over the coming years. A total of 53 actions are recommended in the plan. These all resulted from suggestions made at a wide range of consultation events over an 18 month period, where parishioners were encouraged to express their views. The plan has been very well received by Haxey Parish Council and North Lincs Council. A dedicated group of parish residents have worked hard to bring the plan to fruition. They are now preparing to form an Action Group which will work on moving the plan forward. More residents are now needed to join the group there will be an opportunity to work on areas of particular interest/expertise. Anyone interested in joining the Action Group should contact Alyson Linnegar on alyson.linnegar@gmial.com or 01427 752536. Alternatively interested parties are welcome at the first Action Group meeting to be held at Haxey Memorial Hall on Tuesday 5th October at 7.30p.m.

These are the current Neighbourhood Action Team priorities for the South wards of the Isle of Axholme;Coronation Hall, High Street, Owston Ferry: Anti-social behaviour, Underage drinking and Criminal Damage.
PC Constable 1839 Tina Starbuck
Police Community Support Officer 7574 Sue Fahy
We have received reports of youths congregating in the grounds of St Martins Church in Owston Ferry. This tends to be mainly on an evening and due to it‘s location it is not easy to see them from the main road leading up to the church. This makes it an ideal area for groups to gather and evidence of empty bottles of alcohol and other litter have been found. There are also reports of damage the roof of the church and flowers being cut and removed. The Neighbourhood team are making regular patrols of the area and several youths have been spoken to regarding the reports received and have been moved on. Westwoodside Playing Field; Anti-social behaviour and Nuisance Scooters. We have received reports of youths congregating in the Playing Field and riding scooters across the football area making a general nuisance. Anyone found committing any offences will be dealt with where relevant. There also could be opportunities for scooters to be seized at a cost to the owner. Please adhere to the laws regarding usage of these scooters and any information regarding this issue please contact police. A 161, Low Burnham, caravan site: public order, criminal damage. Low Burnham is awaiting confirmation whether a caravan site is going to commence just off the A161. Police will monitor the situation and respond to any public disorder or criminal offences until the matter is finalised. Police Community Support Officers are now empowered to issue £80 fixed penalty notices for offences of Graffiti, Fly-posters, dog fowling and Litter. The On Target football for boys and girls aged 8-19yrs – FREE – has started on Friday nights at Epworth Leisure Centre Multi use games area. 7-15pm to 8-15pm for years 5-8, then 8-15pm to 9-15pm for years 9+. Please come along and participate. Members of the neighbourhood team endeavour to make some of the nights to give support and encouragement. Officers continue to work with the partnership agencies to encourage and support diversionary activities for youths to prevent them from getting involved in untoward behaviour. This includes support of the playing field associations in fundraising activities. Neighbourhood officers always endeavour to accommodate and engage with Neighbourhood watch meetings and would encourage and support anyone wishing to initiate a new group. I also attend and am actively involved in the Farmwatch scheme set up with the involvement of local farmers from the south and central wards of the Isle of Axholme. This was at the request of a number of farmers to allow us to meet and discuss issues affecting their farms. The meetings were running with what I considered to be a great success; however the last couple of meetings have had a poor turnout. Those farmers who have made the time for a couple of hours still find it a benefit and I would encourage any farmer who either did attend or who wishes to attend in the future to make a note of the next meeting in their diary – WEDNESDAY 3rd NOVEMBER 2010 at 8pm at the RED LION HOTEL, EPWORTH. The meeting only lasts at the most a couple of hours. If you require any further details please contact me. You can contact Humberside Police on 0845 60 60 222 for non-emergency calls. If you feel uncomfortable in calling the police with information about crime, then please consider contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers is an independent charity working to fight crime. They can also be joined on Twitter, Facebook and Bebo or if you go onto the Crimestoppers website you can also fill an on-line form. When contacting Crimestoppers you do not have to give your name and you may be eligible for a cash reward. Working with Pc Tina Starbuck is your Police Community Support Officer Sue Fahy, who regularly patrols the South area of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community issues with you. Please feel free to stop and speak with her or alternatively contact either of us via 0845 60 60 222. PCSO Fahy and PCSO Stewart PEARSON will be in Wroot on Friday 17 th September between 3pm and 4pm, where they will commence their walkabout surgery from the school, please come along and make use of this opportunity to have a chat with the officers regarding any matters relating to your community. We do our utmost to make these visits, however I have to say that if our services are required at short notice for a priority then we apologise for any inconvenience this causes. The police station at Epworth also provides a front counter service for two days a week, Mondays and Thursdays, between 103pm. THE TRENTSIDE CONFEDERATION – SCHOOL NEWS LETTER The end of term for both schools crept up on us swiftly since the last round of ‗school news‘ – the Leavers‘ services were very memorable. West Butterwick‘s service at St Mary‘s church featured a ‗Doctor Who‘ dramatisation that cleverly linked in the Year 6 memories through the theme of time travel – it even included a makeshift tardis and a dalek! Hannah Hobson sang a beautiful solo of ‗Midnight‘ and prize-winners for 2010 were ; Pupils‘ Pupil – Destiny Wallace, Sportsmanship – Hannah Hobson, Academic Achievement – Luke Willerton. St Martin‘s service was equally memorable with a percussion piece performed by the whole of Years 5 & 6, the four recorder groups performed pieces that showed progression of skills leading up to solo and playing in canon, two trumpet players featured and there was also a song from the recent dramatic production of Bugsy Malone ‗ Give a Little Love‘. Prize winners at St Martin‘s were ; Ibbotson Literary Award – Louise Reid, Music – Olivia Chatwin, St Martin‘s Cup – Ben Dance, Sporting Achievement – Ryan Duffy, Key Stage 2 achievement – Ben Dance and Key Stage 1 Achievement – Nikhita Jackson. One of our proudest achievements this year has been the acquisition of the Eco Schools‘ Bronze Award – this is part of the Sustainable Schools Framework that brings environmental themes to the heart of the curriculum, such as litter, healthy living and biodiversity. We managed to make the most of the school gardens this year, harvesting a crop of lettuce, carrots, potatoes, beans, tomatoes and cabbage. We hope to achieve the Silver Award during this next academic year. We look forward to an exciting Autumn Term! . (Don‘t forget to visit our website www.trentsideconfederation.com for lots more information on both schools) Mrs Josephine Buckle, Headteacher (The Trentside Confederation ; St Martin‘s C of E and West Butterwick C of E Primary Schools)

Rescue Day 2010 which took place on Saturday the 10th of July was without doubt an outstanding success. Attendance figures surpassed all expectation, we do not have exact figures, however, we believe they exceeded 15,000. Feed back we have received to date from all concerned has been extremely positive, both exhibitors and members of the public have stated that they had a most informative and enjoyable day. The main objectives for the day was to raise safety awareness to members of the public by providing displays such as Water Rescue demonstrations and Road Traffic Collision exercises, along with raising funds for Help for Heroes and other charities such Lindsey Lodge, LIVES, and the British Heart Foundation. Our objectives were met in full throughout the day with both arenas providing informative and demonstrative displays, additionally Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Services along with Humberside Police, East Midlands Ambulance Service, Sheffield Hallam University and other organisations such as the British Heart Foundation, LIVES, Coast Guard, Doncaster Sub Aqua Club all provided displays, information and talks to the public which all contributed immensely to the days success. Donations are still being counted with more money yet to be accrued (Auction Items) which will be auctioned on the evening of the Raft race (24 th July 2010) and the Pink Ball (7th August 2010) as such an exact figure will be promulgated shortly after August the 7 th 2010. The extreme challenge (Cross Country run) which took place on the morning of Rescue Day which provided 128 entrants with mud, water, bog obstacles and more mud proved very challenging, however, indications are that the event was very different though really enjoyable and delivered a real sense of achievement by all who took part . The invaluable assistance from Dave Tune (Metres to Miles) cannot be understated and all who helped, which was very much appreciated. The Aerial displays provided by 202 Squadron, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (Spitfire) along with the Police and Lincolnshire Air Ambulance Helicopters were absolutely superb and once again feed back has been excellent on all counts. The Red Devils conducted an outstanding Parachute display culminating into a water drop and rescue by Humber Rescue, Doncaster and Thorne Sub Aqua clubs ably assisted by the 7 Lakes rescue team on Jet Skis. The Red Devils then met with the public signing autographs and providing photo opportunities All organisations and personnel taking part should be extremely proud of their contribution and on behalf of the Rescue Day Committee and for the record I would like to express my thanks to them. It would be remiss of me not to mention all those volunteer and youth organisations who also contributed significantly to the events overall success such as FODSA, the Army and Navy cadets, Lost and Lonely Scooters along with the Staff at 7 Lakes Country Park all of which I am very grateful to, as such I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation and thanks. It is recognised that the hard work applied by the Rescue Day committee to the planning and delivery of the event was by and large outside their Day Job and again I am very grateful to all for their dedication in their application to Rescue Day along with their contribution in making it a resounding success. Whilst I would not want to single out anyone in particular several members of the committee most certainly went beyond the call of duty and some, they know who they are and for that and to them I am internally grateful. Finally I would like to take the opportunity to pass on sincere thanks to local residents and all those attending from the public for coming to Rescue Day for their understanding regarding additional traffic build up and your cooperation and in making the event a fantastic and enjoyable day. John Armson

1st Isle of Axholme B-P Scouts Scouting goes from strength to strength on the southern part of the Isle. The First Isle of Axholme BP Scout Group is now nearly 3 years old and has well over 100 members, overseen by a leadership team of 18. The Scouting experience for boys and girls starts when they join the Beavers from the age of 6 and continues through to their late teens as they progress through Wolf Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts. With the Beavers our target is to develop self confidence and life skills with a programme of activities, based in the Westwoodside Village Hall and, as importantly, out in the surrounding countryside. The local woods, turbarys and peat moors provide an exciting, yet safe, environment for the youngsters. This year, amongst many other activities, they have explored the Lindholme peat moors with experts from Natural England, where they even (safely) saw some of the local snakes basking in the sun. They learnt all about rearing beef cattle with a visit to Gill and David Carr‘s herd. Recently we had a BBQ night in a local wood where they all cooked their own suppers. In July we held our annual ―Beavers and Parent‖ camp in an oak wood near Caistor. The weather was perfect, and everyone enjoyed exploring the local woods, a camp fire and lots and lots of good food. At the end of their 2 years in Beavers they are able to move up confidently into wolf cubs and then into Scouts. The high point of this years Scout section is the visit in July to the international jamboree in Germany. We do have a few vacancies for the start of the autumn school term. To learn more about joining this active and progressive group, contact Karl Eastam on 01427 754120 and visit our website

Many people associate the drainage of the Isle with Vermuyden and the Dutch in the times of Charles 1. In actual fact the first people to start draining the Isle were the Romans. The area started some 11-15,000 years ago as a glacial lake known as Lake Humber. Glacial melt left deposits of clays and sands, since then forests have turned to peat. Stone and flint axe heads from the Neolithic age have been found at Crowle and bronze age metal artefacts at Low Burnham. Traces of a Romano-British settlement were found at Sandtoft when excavating for the M180 motorway. At one time Bawtry was classed as a port. In the 14th century some 12,000 cattle were grazed in Epworth and Westwoodside and fishing rights in Crowle were valued at £300 per year in 1650. James I was the first to ask Vermuyden to drain the land but he died before work commenced, and the final agreement was drawn up by his son Charles 1. It was this agreement that caused all the trouble as it split the land three-ways between the King, the Dutch ‗participants‘ and the local population. The work around Haxey and Epworth carried out during 1628-1631. In 1764 John Smeaton, who built the Eddystpone Lighthouse, did some drainage work and the Stainforth and Keadby Canal opened in 1800. Pumping Stations were built during the 19th and 20th centuries. The position of the dykes and rivers has been changed many times over the centuries. Mr Townley illustrated his talk with photos of old maps of the area. Sylvia Hook giving thanks for a very interesting talk said she could still remember the old names of the dykes from her childhood. Earlier members had been told of the progress being made with research on the names listed on the Haxey War Memorial. It is hoped to complete the project in time for the next Armistice Day in November. The personal histories are to be placed in leather bound books to be displayed in Haxey Church and the two chapels in the Parish. Copies will also be donated to the two schools. The next meeting is Thursday September 9th at 7.30pm in Westwoodside village Hall, when Carol Hill will be making a very welcome return visit to the Society.

WESTWOODSIDE PONDLIGHTS CHRISTMAS SWITCH-ON EVENT ON ICY GROUND
Do you and your family enjoy the Annual Switch-On Event? How much do you enjoy seeing the village lit up at Christmas? How would you feel if all this disappeared off the calendar?
Do you enjoy sitting by the pond? Do you enjoy watching the fish and feeding the ducks? All monies raised from social events and donations, throughout the year, are ploughed back into the provision and maintenance of light sets and funding the switch-on event. Last Christmas, vandalism and the disappearance of light sets cost the fund in excess of £1000. Many villagers enjoy the atmosphere and festivity of Switch-on. For many it is the start of the festive season. Unfortunately, fewer and fewer villagers are supporting the fund raising events, only 20 of the supporters at the July event were from the village! Where does the money go……….?
Light sets and replacement bulbs Giveaways – santa hats, glowsticks, mince pies, mulled wine Subsidised crisps and pop Decorations Donations to South Axholme School, Epworth Lions and the Scouts for helping make the night happen Refurbishing the seating area around the pond Supplies for social events Entertainment fees Raffle prizes

Haxey Parish Council, Newsletter, September 2010 Parish Clerk - Deb Hotson Email: haxeypc@live.co.uk Telephone: 01652 618306 / 07800 569 589 Website: www.haxeyparish.org.uk
Power of Well Being Training Haxey Parish Council has undertaken the Power of Well Being training run by ERNLLCA (East Riding & North Lincolnshire Local Councils Association. (9th from the right Mr Alan Barker). The eligibility criteria requires a Council to have a qualified Clerk, 80% of the Councillors trained in the use of the power, at least 2/3 of vacancies on the Council filled at the last ordinary election and to have published a statement of intent as to community engagement. The latter has yet to be done but once this is complete the Parish Council will be able to use the power to promote or improve the economic well-being of the area, promote social well-being, and promote or improve the environmental well-being of the area which includes health and culture. Haxey Parish Plan The Parish Council accepted the newly launched Haxey Community-Led Parish Plan at its July meeting. This is the culmination of 18 months hard work by the Steering Group involving wide spread consultation with the community. There are 53 Actions recommended and when completed over the next few years these will make significant improvements to life in Haxey Parish. Copies of the full Report are available from the Haxey Library and the Parish Clerk. Residents interested in joining the Parish Plan Action Group that will monitor and assist in the completion of various projects are requested to contact the Parish Clerk. The Future of the Library Services at Haxey Parishioners will now be aware that as part of the savings measures required by the national economic situation, North Lincolnshire Council (NLC) has entered into a consultation about the future provision of Library services to several local Town and Parishes. The consultation, which consists mainly of a briefing leaflet and questionnaire and is based on the different operation of the current facility, provides a choice of 2 options for the future. Option 1 is the retention of the Library facility with limited support from NLC and staffing of the Library by local volunteers. Option 2 is based on a mobile library facility with some choice of period of visits and stopping places. Neither of these options is acceptable to the Parish Council. The consultation period expires on 20th August 2010 and it is hoped that NLC will receive a comprehensive response from Parishioners to their proposals in the questionnaire. Haxey Parish Council has been in communication with NLC Library Services and has written to NLC stating our objection to the Library closure. In summary, whilst recognising the financial issues faced by NLC, the Parish Council‘s view is that as the Library is one of the focal points of the local. Community, it should be retained as it currently is and that as this service is fundamental to the rural area, NLC should look to the urban areas for any Library savings. Haxey Pubic Convenience Block Parishioners will be aware form local press reporting that the toilet block in Haxey is scheduled for disposal, the toilets being declared surplus to NLC‘s requirements on 25 th June 2010. Haxey Parish Council has indicated to NLC that it had an interest in the building prior to the decision to dispose of the facility and since the announcement there is anecdotal evidence that Parishioners would wish to retain the facility in the Village. The Parish Council will remain in contact with NLC over the issue and will support any efforts made by the Ward Councillors to overturn the closure decision; however, if there is indeed a widespread requirement for retention of the toilets from Parishioners, before the Parish Council can take the matter any further it would need to know the strength of public opinion for retention. Therefore, in 28 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements order to gauge public opinion, Parishioners are requested to contact the Parish Council Clerk with their views as soon as possible.

The Isle of Axholme
Where You Live
Your Local History
Adapted by Anthony Catherall The Drainage of the Isle (continued)
In 1636 the commoners of Epworth protested to the local commissioners about their allocation of only 6,000 acres. The disputes were referred to the Attorney General John Banks, who allocated a further1, 000 acres. This far from satisfied the commoners who claimed all 13,000 acres under John de Mowbray’s Deed. Violence broke out again. William Torksey, Hezekiah Brown, John Moody and Henry Scott were arrested and find £1000,00 by the Court of Star Chamber in London. After this, peace reigned in the Isle until 1642 with the outbreak of Civil War. The Islonians sided with parliament and again tried to eject the Participants. Violence broke out and floodgates, sluices and banks were broken down. Soon there was complete chaos. The Sheriff of Lincoln arrived with 100 men to protect the Participants. Daniel Noddell raised 400 men. Defeated the Sheriff and drove him out. With the King gone and Parliament ruling, the Islonians might have expected a return to the land, but in 1650 when the case was again raised in London, Parliament sided with the Participants. The Islonians obtained the support of John Wildman and John Lilbourne (Freeborn John), two leaders of the Levellers, an extreme revolutionary group with strong socialist views. They encouraged the riotous Islonians to impound the enemies’ cattle and demand extortionate fees for redemption. Major-General Edward Whalley arrived to put down the riots. This was only temporary. Nathaniel Reading, an agent of the Participants, now became the object of the commoners’ fury. He was paid £200,00 a year plus costs. There were thirty-one set battles between Reading and the commoners. The Participants were unable to pay Reading and so as compensation, they gave him the lease of Epworth Manor right in the middle of his enemies. In 1694 and 1697 his property was attacked and burnt by a mob led by Katherine Popplewell. The Riot Act of 1715 and the presence of soldiers of Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Reading eventually brought peace to the Area. Thus ended almost 100 years of turmoil and violence. Legal processes were also used by the commoners to seek justice. The Vavasour family and Robert Popplewell acted for the commoners in court. Besides the legal action mentioned, in 1691 the case raised again in London and the 1636 decision was set aside and a more favourable offer made to the commoners. However in 1719 the commoner’s case was finally dismissed before the court of Chancery.

Sponsorship Scheme Launched at Wesleyana Day A sponsorship scheme to conserve one of the treasured and ancient books in Epworth‘s Old Rectory Museum was launched on Saturday (July 24) when the Grade 1 listed building played host to a Wesleyana Day. The multi-faceted event was held primarily to raise money for the Old Rectory‘s development fund – a project to open up the entire house to visitors and provide a visitors‘ centre to house a café, museum shop and other facilities including improved parking. The sponsorship scheme was launched to preserve a book entitled Contemplations Upon The History of the New Testament. It was published in 1661 and is part of the museum‘s collection as it contains the signatures of several of the Wesley family. ―It is in serious need of conservation, so we are inviting people to donate £1 to dedicate the restoration of a single page to someone special to them,‖ said the Old Rectory‘s curator, Rev Claire Potter. Prior to Saturday‘s event the Old Rectory had launched an appeal for old books and their sale alone raised £350. In addition, as Saturday was Epworth Old Gardens weekend, there were plants on sale. Some were grown at the Old Rectory itself and others had been donated by volunteers and in all £500 was raised on the day.

Another facet to the day was a sort of ‗Antiques Roadshow‘ for items relating to the Old Rectory itself, the Wesley family and Methodism in the Epworth area. A team of experts was on hand to advise people about their memorabilia, although valuations could not be given. Some 40 objects were brought to the experts and they ranged from an old family Bible, statues, ceramics, prints, paintings and books – some of which had been given as Sunday school prizes. Among the more unusual items brought along were a brass doorknocker in the form of John Wesley, an oil painting of him framed in velvet and a Bible dating from 1805 with all sorts of documents tucked inside it. Each object was logged, photographed and then the item‘s owner was given time with the relevant expert to discuss it. Several items were subsequently donated to the Old Rectory Museum, internationally famous as the birthplace of John and Charles Wesley – founders of the Methodist movement. About 150 people attended the day-long event - including Isle MP Andrew Percy, who was given a tour of the Old Rectory and took great interest in the book sponsorship scheme. Anyone interested in sponsoring the restoration of a page of the 1661 book can do so by going along the museum during opening hours, which are Monday to Saturday from 10.00am until 4.30pm and Sunday from 2.00pm until 4.30pm. Anyone who sponsors the restoration of a page will be able to write a dedication and these will be bound in a book to be kept in the Old Rectory‘s library in perpetuity.

Doncaster Advanced Motorist Beyond The Standard Driving Test Dear readers, The government has made the standard Driving Test more difficult in recent years, with the addition of a multiple-choice test and a computerised hazard-awareness assessment. However it still only involves learning the most fundamental driving skills and doesn‘t include preparation for poor-weather or motorway driving. The standard L-test is simply an introduction to driving a vehicle. Your further education takes place on today‘s congested roads and provides a steep and often precarious learning curve, this is where Driver education comes in. On the U/K‘s congested roads it‘s important that you‘re always in the right frame of mind to drive. A positive attitude will help to reduce the risk of collisions through tolerance and courtesy, by being realistic as to your own abilities, and by maintaining a high degree of care for your own safety and others. Driving on UK roads can be very stressful, but you must always remain cool-headed tolerant and courteous–helping to avoid or diffuse any threatening situations. Don‘t let your driving standards be affected by other motorist‘s mistakes or behaviour. Stay relaxed, don‘t be provoked and remember that, if you do make a mistake an apologetic wave is often all it takes to put things right. Don‘t let your enthusiasm for driving tempt you into breaking the speed limit or driving dangerously always know what speed you are doing and know what the maximum speed limit is. Remember timid drivers can be as dangerous as aggressive drivers. Always expect the worst from other motorists and try to understand what they are aiming to achieve. If you allow for poor observation and slow reactions, you‘ll find you‘re always prepared for the worst-case scenario. Whether you‘re a novice motorist or an experienced driver, you‘ll always find room to improve your driving skills. Keep an open mind, be realistic about your limitations and always be prepared to learn from any errors you make. When following other drivers, always apply the two-second rule if you suspect they may not be totally focused on their driving, leave an even bigger gap to give you extra braking time. Tailgating is a common cause of collisions, it is dangerous and antisocial and can never be condoned. 1.The Driving Position.
One of the most important aspects of driving a modern machine involves achieving the perfect driving position every time you get behind the wheel. This allows you maximum control over your vehicle and will keep you more comfortable and alert on longer journey‘s It‘s also the position most often adopted by racing drivers, especially rally and touring car drivers.
£110
Sit in the car with the base of your spine in the back of the seat to prevent back problems.
Hold the wheel at ten-to-two or quarter-to-three. Keep your thumbs vertical.
Whenever possible adjust the steering wheel rake for improved control and to enable you to see all the dashboard instruments.
Make sure your arms are slightly bent. Your legs should be slightly bent too when your feet are on
the pedals.
The back of the seat should be fairly upright giving you a good view of the road ahead, mirrors, display and dials. Ensure that head restraints are adjusted so that they align with the top of you head. Paul Tuke. Secretary, Senior Training Observer. 40 Advanced Please mention when Doncaster Motorists. St. Martin’s Church Summer Fayre was held on Saturday 17th July 2010. After a lot of planning, the day dawned and a band of willing helpers carried out flower arrangements, the setting up of exhibitions and the erection of the marques which we hoped would not be used to shelter from the rain. Mr and Mrs. Don Clayphan opened the Fayre and Don wished us well in the raising of funds especially in view of the recent thefts of lead from the roof. Many parishioners, villagers and visitors arrived to enjoy the tea and home made selection of cakes as well as to take part in tombolas, raffles and bric a brac stall. Many other stalls were also there, including a team of Owston Ferry children carrying out their life style project to fund new rose trees in a memorial garden to the memory of the late Mary Fletcher and also the late Dolly Johnson. They are also raising funds for a project at Castle Hill. Many who attended went into the Church to see the lovely flower arrangements and to hear two organ recitals given by our Organist, Nick Haines. They were also able to see an exhibition of memorabilia relating to the Frances Sandars Almshouses and the Smithy Museum, which was organised and displayed by Mr. and Mrs. Clayphan. John Rhodes presented a display relating to Missionaries and the Church Army. Everyone seemed to enjoy the afternoon and thankfully the rain stayed away. All too soon the raffles were being drawn and visitors gradually dispersed. It was marvellous that about £850.00 was raised towards the Church funds.
