Bell Ringing-A national youth striking competition was held in Oxford on Saturday 11th July. Nineteen teams from across the country took part including a representative band from North Lincolnshire. Two members of the local band took part namely Joshua Myhill and Nathan Williams both of Belton. Joshua is now studying at John Leggott College and was previously a South Axholme Pupil. Nathian currently attends South Axholme Academy. Lincolnshire Poachers was the name of the team and they came seventh which is very commendable. The competition was held at the Church of St Thomas the Martyr and during the event youngsters were given the opportunity to ring on other Oxford bells including those at Christchurch Cathedral. Next year the competition will be held in London and the local lads are preparing to take part again. The repair work being undertaken on St Andrew’s Bells, Epworth, is nearing completion and they will be heard again in the near future along with the clock. A workshop day will be held on 21st November in St Andrew’s Church when members of the community will have the opportunity learn about the bells and the organ. The organ has also recently been restored which was made possible by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Bells and Pipes is the theme for the day when the opportunity will also be given to learn a little about change ringing and organ playing. Melvyn Rose

www.coffee.macmillan.org.uk Haxey School News The end of term at Haxey was very busy with a very successful sports day. Well done to everyone who took part and also to the Stringer family for the loan of marquee's which were a blessing sheltering the children for the sun (no rain this year, hooray!) Years 5 and 6 put on a production of 'Pirates of the Curry Bean' which was enjoyed by all who were lucky enough to watch a performance. All of the 'actors' were fantastic. Special thanks to the staff who gave their time to organise rehearsals and the performance, which was up at St Nicholas' Church. Thank you to Rev. Green for the venue. Good luck to year 6 who left on a high. May your learning journey be successful at your respective new schools. The summer fayre figures are in.....ÂŁ1056.19 was raised by those who supported the event, which we think is a record! A MASSIVE thank you to everyone, especially members of the PTFA who organised it. Watch out in the new term for future PTFA events and support the, if you can. All monies raised go back into school to enhance the learning experience of the children.

THE W.W.2 DIARY OF CLIFFORD SPENCER 1764164 Gunner. SPENCER Clifford 27 L.A.A. (Light Ack Ack) Regt, R.A. (Royal Artillery) (107 Bty. (Battery)) Adapted & edited for publication by Anthony E. Catherall

We no sooner get on the boat, than as we thought, down into the hold we went, packed like sheep again, and being in there, one could very well believe the story about the Artimay? The ladder, which led down into it, was in constant use because half the chaps had still got diarrhoea and dysentery. We had an hour a day on the top deck, and oh boy was it good to be in the fresh air. (Apart from the few who were transported from Bahriyah by submarine, the bulk of the prisoners from North Africa had left Benghazi or Tripoli direct for Italy in Axis cargo or passenger vessels or in Italian warships. Crammed into the holds and battened down at nights, they had been rushed across the Mediterranean and were just as relieved as the Italian guards and crew to reach Taranto or Brindisi in safety, though many prisoners had vaguely nursed wild hopes of a dramatic naval rescue during the crossing. One of the ships paid an unexpected call to Crete, where a party of 250-odd spent a week or so at the then comparatively empty Gelatos camp before going on to Taranto.) There were eight or nine destroyers as escort and the sight really was lovely, if only it was back to England. We had to sleep sat up, no room to lie down. I like many had no cigs. We passed by Greece and Crete. There was a fine ship called Rossa.

Brindisi Italy After about ten hours sailing, we docked at Brindisi, (on the heel of Italy) first sight of Italy was, trees, green fields, and very much like dear old England. Lorries were waiting to take us to camp, which was ten miles. Arrived there, tired, and oh so hungry, we had to queue up, and it nearly broke my heart to have to go behind that queue, it looked to be an endless job, it was so long, and of course, there was nix by the time it got to us. We slept outside for a week, but it was not cold only plenty of ants creeping about. It was called camp 110, kept having roll calls, which used to last four to five hours. The best surprise of all was one-day Red Cross parcels turned up. Oh boy, how that first drink of tea, English tea went down, the first decent drink since being captured. Besides that there was cocoa, biscuits, milk, sugar, chocs, meats, butter, and puddings. I had heard a lot about the Red Cross, but never gave it a thought that they would turn up just then, I thanked God, as most of the lads must have done, for although the food was much better now, there was nowhere near enough. After a week we moved into a hut, which was much better, wooden beds and straw mattresses. We went 18 one dayPlease again in Lorries about miles away to be debugged, at we did get a hot mention “ThefiveArrow when responding toleast advertisements shower, and all our clothes were steamed to kill the lice. Defibrillator for Haxey We are extremely pleased that an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) has been installed at Haxey Memorial Hall, which is centrally located in the village, with easy access from the Memorial Hall car park. Instructions for use are printed clearly on the box which houses the device. AEDs can help save lives in the event of a heart attack and should ideally be available wherever medical treatment is more than 5 minutes away. North Lincolnshire Council has committed £75,000 to increase the number of AEDs and has installed or plans to install approximately 70 devices in as many towns and rural locations as possible.

The annual Rescue Day held at 7 Lakes Country Park, Crowle, and North Lincolnshire have a dedicated pool of enthusiasts who regularly attend this wonderful informative event hosted by Humberside Fire and Rescue Service. It is a joy to see thousands and thousands of families seeing first hand, what happens around them every day of their lives. The amazing work of the rescue services around the United Kingdom, here promotes, Safer Roads, Waterside Safety, Fire & Rail safety. Current publicity explains that Rescue Day is the biggest event of its kind in the world. Just to observe and experience how the rescue services works, is in itself, a life changing experience in gaining knowledge of how the industry has changed for the better in 2015. Lately there had been significant improvements and changes to the training, infrastructure and equipment of our Rescue Services. I was overawed and excited by what I saw and heard at the event. Because of this, my plea to the public and especially our elected councillors who are responsible in part to the funding of such services is to go along next year and acquaint yourself by having a good look around to see just were part of our Council Tax money is spent. For the public it’s your hard earned money that goes into the pot, see for yourself an outstanding result. A magnificent new feature has arrived at 7 Lakes Country Park during 2014, through Volker Rail in association with Tata Steel and Network Rail. Together they have installed a length of railway display track incorporating a level crossing, complete with a large locomotive standing on the line. Level crossing safety has been in the news lately in our area. Now with this wonderful initiative, the public can be taken through enactments (by the three main rescue services, British Transport Police, Network & Volker Rail), Exactly what happens at a level crossing incident where a train has collided with a road vehicle. This will show people the importance of being safe near or on a level crossing. For me these two re-enactments during the afternoon were by themselves well worth the low entrance price on the day. The added concept of Rescue Day in the joining of the Rescue Services with the trade is to be applauded. Unlike most Fire Service exhibitions in the UK that I used to be involved in, they were for trade only. Here all three main emergency services work hand-inhand together for the public’s enjoyment and to raise vital money for local charities. The set up, the venue the ingenuity and organisation is first class and highly appropriate. Hundreds of spectators watch the commencement of the

Each year, an average of 400 people drown in the UK. Within 7 Lakes the water rescue services can be shown at their best how to deal with this danger extensively in the 40 acre Clearwater Lake.

Spectators at the clubhouse end watch the action on Clearwater Lake A typical Search & Rescue craft on the Clearwater Lake.

The Fire Service has water rescue facilities on several special appliances at Fire Stations. Also Humber Rescue has boats that operate on the Humber River. Humber Rescue Boat on Clearwater Lake

Water itself is vital to the Fire & Rescue Service in regards to protecting and saving property. However water itself can be a major hazard to people and property when there is too much of it in the way of flooding. Humberside Fire and Rescue Service are one of the twelve services in the UK that have specialist equipment for dealing with these types of problems High Volume pumps with associated equipment that can deliver 7,000 litres a minute for fire-ground feeding and sixinch suction hose are carried for high density flood water removal is available on these specialist vehicles.

The ground monitor here working on just tick-over can deliver 7,000 litres of water a minute when needed.

Command and control at any emergency is vital for the successful conclusion. For larger incidents necessitating more senior officers and high technology, each Fire Service has a command and support unit on stand-by. Receiving satellite communications on sate of the art television screens these units employ inside an uncluttered working environment giving affectability at major incidents. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service Command Support Unit. Based at Stocksbridge Sheffield retained Firefighters Dave Clarke and Son Ross stand on the steps of the Unit.

Police Officers were in abundance keeping control of an event at huge as Rescue Day. They had presence too, in the way of emergency vehicles, transport, demonstrations, static exhibitions, and the Humberside police Helicopter. Similar to Firefighters, Police Officers have to undertake a rigorous training regime including confined space training. At Recue Day they brought one of their units to allow children the fun of being attached to a suitable harness and then lowered by hoist into the cylindrical facility. There were queues all day and over 500 children were able to share a unique experience.

A large fleet of Ambulances and equipment were in attendance on the day and joined in the various demonstrations both static and operationally. For 21 years Lincs & Nott’s Air Ambulance has operated in our area. Each mission costs over £2,000 and they fly three a day. Several events are held throughout the counties to fund this life saving facility which needs about £1.9M to operate every year. Spectators and onlookers gather around ‘Ambucopter’ the MD 902 Explorer Helicopter.

It has become some sort of a trend for commercial vehicles in public service to have advertisements all over their body work. This now includes Fire Appliances of one sort and another in different counties about Britain. However there is only ONE in Britain that has been uniquely wrapped in blue livery. An operational Rescue pump is stationed at East Hull Fire Station part of Humberside Fire & Rescue Service. Through a partnership between the Service and the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) of Hull 2020 (who funded the project) HF&RS & CCG are raising the awareness of Prostate Cancer UK and support its Men United campaign.

Airborne displays were plentiful over the lake during the day. These included the Red Devils Display Team, A Dakota aircraft, Stunt Bi-Plane (Lauren Richardson), Bristow Helicopters, Search & Rescue and the Coastguard Helicopter. Be sure to be there for Rescue Day Saturday 9th July 2016! A member of the Red Devils Display Team

This lovely boy is Haro, a five year old Labrador Cross. Haro is a really friendly, happy boy, who is always pleased to see everyone, and his tail is always wagging! He is wellbehaved on the lead and a very smart dog – he loves to learn new tricks. He would love a nice garden to run in, and really enjoys his walks. Haro is not great with other dogs or cats, so would need to be an only pet. He would be best in a home with older children. Haro is neutered and fully vaccinated. If you would like to meet this lovely boy, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705
