Welcome to the September issue of the Arrow!
The Worlds biggest coffee morning is fast approaching and takes place on Friday 28th September. Every Coffee Morning changes lives. Did you know? The first ever Coffee Morning happened way back in 1990. It was a rather small affair with a simple idea: guests would gather over coffee and donate the cost of their cuppa to Macmillan in the process. It was so effective, it happened the following year – only this time nationally. Since then, Coffee mornings have raised over £200 million for Macmillan. If you would like to support this great charity, you can host your own coffee morning, invite friends and neighbours and make a real difference. For more information full details are on page 30. Enjoy the read and please note the deadline for the October issue is Wednesday 12th September for distribution by the 1st October.

These two lovely boys are Rocky & Joey- two year old Lurchers who need a new home as a pair. They are lovely natured, gentle, affectionate dogs with nice manners, and have lived happily with children. They are ok with other dogs, if a bit excitable around them, but are not good with cats. They have been family pets, and are typically laid-back in the home. Rocky & Joey are neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. If you would like to come and meet this smashing pair, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.

Epworth and District Flower Club July 2018 The July meeting of the ladies of Epworth Flower Club took a different format from usual. A relatively new member was introduced and gave an extremely interesting talk about her involvement with the RHS Feel Good Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show. Sarah Armitage, the Senior Events Manager for NHS England, began by explaining that the NHS was keen to celebrate its 70 year history and one of the events to publicise this was to work with the Royal Horticultural Society. Together they worked to raise awareness of the positive impact horticulture has on mental health by creating a garden for the Chelsea Flower Show which would then be recreated in an NHS mental health trust location. Sarah told us how, under severe time pressures, 54 mental health trusts were invited to compete to create a Feel Good Garden. The garden had to be planned and designed from scratch which involved the development of the location, with consideration of underground pipes etc, wildlife, accessibility for inpatients and the wider society and availability and support for its continued maintenance. The winning trust was Camden and Islington Foundation Trust. The site at Highgate hospital, where the garden will be recreated, provides care and treatment for vulnerable adults in a built -up area of London where green space is limited. Some high - profile individuals were involved in the decision making and Sarah told us how she worked alongside RHS Award-winning designer Matt Keightley, Guy Barter, RHS Chief Horticulturalist and Tim Kendall, National Clinical Director for Mental Health. The results of the competition combine calming colours of plants, aromatic herbs, grasses which encourage wildlife and meandering paths which encourage lingering. The show garden was built in three weeks but it is now under construction in its location with patients and staff being involved with development and planting. The RHS have agreed to donate two more gardens to the NHS in the next two years. The event created an opportunity and highlighted the need for conversation about mental health issues. “Simply being in a garden or green space can make you feel happier and healthier. There is an increasing evidence base demonstrating the positive impact that gardens and gardening can have on mental health.” (RHS Feel Good Garden) Sarah also told the members about innovative GP Social Prescribing which is taking place in some areas of the country and some discussion followed. As usual we concluded with a vote of thanks for a very interesting and different evening. Refreshments followed and there was a chance to buy pots and plants in support of this year’s charity which is the Alzheimer’s Society.
The September meeting on Monday 10th will be in the usual location, the Stephen Jones Community Hall, Haxey at 7.30pm. Jo Smith will give a demonstration entitled “My world of Inspiration”. The October meeting on Monday 8th will be an Autumn workshop and watch for details of the Open Meeting in November when Andrew Grisewood will “Unwrap the Season”. Do join us for any meeting.
