Wroot Art Exhibition News

The day was extremely successful and enjoyed a steady flow of visitors from 11am to 5pm. Without exception , visitors commented on the diversity and extremely high standard of the work on show. For many, it was an opportunity to see what their friends and neighbours were capable of. The show included paintings, drawings, pastel work, pen and ink images, sculptures, and textile work. I think that the show will undoubtedly have given the members of my class a feeling of pride and increase their confidence . A number of pictures were sold, but most were not for sale as students from the class were too attached to the work they had done. Following the success of the show, the class may have another exhibition later in the year!

Thousands watch emergency teams in action at Rescue Day Thousands of people converged on 7 Lakes Country Park near Scunthorpe at the weekend to see 999 crews in action at the annual Rescue Day event. Teams from all the blue light services, plus highways, road recovery, rail and water rescue agencies worked together in a series of live demonstrations that saw visitors flock to watch them in action. At lunchtime the famous Red Devils Parachute Display team performed a breath taking jump into clearwater lake in front of the gathered crowds, followed by a flotilla of rescue boats that collected them back to shore to meet members of the public. After yet another successful event the organisers have already announced the date for Rescue Day 2020 to be Saturday 11th July. The annual Rescue Day raises funds for charities and good causes and during the opening ceremony the organising committee presented several organisations with donations to support their vital work, including Scunthorpe Sea Cadets, International Rescue Corps, Humber Rescue, Pete Lewin Newfoundland Water Rescue & Therapy Dogs, York Rescue Boat & British Divers Marine Life Rescue team. Donations have also been made from last year’s proceeds to Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance and the Emma’s Wish charity. The aim of the day is to raise awareness of the emergency services and charitable organisations and show the public what they do and how they work together. Families enjoyed the day with children and adults alike engaging with the many different exhibitors spreading messages about road, rail, water and fire safety. There was lots to have a go at including a mass CPR lesson which saw over 120 people simultaneously be taught how to perform chest compressions and on the lake side a session on how to rescue someone from the water took place. Other attractions included a climbing wall, a confined space tunnel and an ordnance disposal team robot. Specialist Newfoundland water rescue dogs, plus K9 fire investigation and Humberside Police dogs all took part in various mock incidents showing how their skills can help the public. There were also visits from the popular Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance helicopter and The Children’s Air Ambulance made it’s first appearance this year at Rescue Day too. Emergency crews from Humberside Fire & Rescue Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service, Humberside Police, West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue’s regional Urban Search & Rescue team and British Transport Police all took part in a range of real life demonstrations, supported by Highways England, Network Rail, Gallows Wood Recovery and VolkerRail. Crowds gathered to watch teams attend a rail crash, a house explosion, an aircraft incident, a protester removed from the top of a train carriage, a heavy goods vehicle tanker rollover recovery and much more. Organisers were blessed with a fine and warm day that saw huge crowds enjoying this very popular annual event. Rescue Day Chair, Chris Long, said: “We’d like to thank all the 999 teams and organisations who took part, plus the volunteers, exhibitors, sponsors and our committee who make the day happen. Thank you to all the visitors who once again turned out in huge numbers to support our emergency services to make it a memorable family day.” Photos and video clips from the day will be available at www.rescueday999.com and you can follow Rescue Day on social media - “The Twitter: Arrow” @Rescue_Day or www.facebook.com/rescudedayuk for more 16 Please mention when responding to advertisements information.

Fracking industry has its sights on the Isle of Axholme and North Notts Over the past eighteen months, IGas have been drilling exploratory wells in North Nottinghamshire in their quest for shale gas. They are now looking to expand their operations across the region. Both IGas and another fracking company, Egdon Resources, have licences to explore for shale gas in the Isle. At a fracking industry conference in April 2019, IGas set out their vision for expanding fracking operations in this area. They include 4 or more additional well pads, 10 wells on each, with construction and drilling crews repeatedly moving heavy equipment between the sites over the next 5 years! This is just the start. To be commercially viable, fracking needs thousands of wells on hundreds of sites. WON’T THEY NEED PLANNING PERMISSION? IGas’ plans are dependent upon fracking being granted the status of ‘Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects’ (NSIP) by which planning consent would be granted by the government. This would effectively remove your democratically elected councils and your objections from planning decisions. Under this system, compulsory purchase orders could be used to impose sites on landowners in your communities. But it won’t just stop with gas wells: the fracking industry requires a large and complex infrastructure to support shale gas production, and according to IGas, ‘NSIP already covers elements of potential shale developments; generating stations, electric lines, liquefied natural gas facilities, gas reception facilities, gas pipelines’. BUT DON’T WE NEED THE GAS? The government’s support for the fracking industry is an indicator of the turmoil in its energy policy:

Ineos (featured on the BBC’s ‘War on Plastic’) are in partnership with IGas in this area; they want shale gas to power and feed their European chemical plants to produce plastics, not to heat your home. The government’s own 2017 ‘Gas Security of Supply’ assessment report confirmed that fracking is not

required for our energy security. A robust program of home insulation would permanently lower gas demand, reduce our dependency on imports and help to relieve fuel poverty. Since 2012 government has cut support for such schemes by 58% www.e3g.org In July 2018 The National Infrastructure Commission stated that moving to an electricity system mainly powered by renewable energy sources could be the “safest bet” in the long term, and become the lowest cost outcome for consumers. www.nic.org.uk The industry’s latest claim is that shale gas will be used to make hydrogen with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS.) These technologies themselves use large amounts of energy which will have to be paid for by consumers. SOME FACTS ABOUT FRACKING. There is increasing evidence to support the case that due to fugitive methane emissions, shale gas is actually worse for the environment than burning coal. The government’s selective use of evidence on this issue was recently ruled unlawful in the High Court. Fracking will result in thousands of HGV movements increasing congestion and pollution whilst damaging our roads. Fracking will not reduce your gas bills. Public health and environmental concerns have led to fracking bans and moratoria in many countries, including Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and numerous states in the US and Australia. Breast Cancer Care Afternoon Tea. Tuesday afternoon, 16th July was the date ladies from Haxey and Westwoodside decided to host an Afternoon Tea to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care. The venue was the recently refurbished Church Hall in Haxey, which has a well equipped kitchen. The purpose of this event was to raise awareness of breast cancer and help a charity that has been so supportive to so many families during a difficult time. Once the plans were circulated, it was amazing how many ladies immediately offered to make cakes, provide raffle o.ukprizes and help on the day. The tables were attractively laid out with pink roses, pink serviettes, literature regarding the importance of checking ones breasts regularly and of course pride of place was the donation box. Ladies prepared a wonderful tea of delicious sandwiches, cream scones and cakes which were thoroughly enjoyed by an overwhelming number of supporters from Haxey, Westwoodside and surrounding villages. The atmosphere was great and visitors enjoyed happily chatting to friends, at the same time completing a quiz about ‘Tea’. The raffle was later drawn and many visitors went home with a wonderful prize, a number of which were donated by local shops. After an extremely successful fundraising event, the donations raised amounted to a total of £800.00 and this will be forwarded to the Fundraising Team to help research, support people affected by breast cancer or campaign for better care and services. Everyone was happy to be part of this Afternoon Tea 2019 - many thanks to all the helpers and ladies who donated cakes, jam etc. and a special thanks to everyone who came to support Breast Cancer Care. Ladies from Haxey and Westwoodside.

Haxey & Westwoodside Heritage Society are holding their AGM in Westwoodside Village Hall on Thursday, 12th September at 7.30pm, followed by an audio presentation by George Fiddler. All welcome, £2 including refreshments.

Farewell Year 6! Our oldest children are leaving us to start the next chapter in their education, and what a send off Haxey gave them! We kicked off the celebrations with our Music Morning, which celebrated the musical talents of our pupils. We were treated to performances on the piano, the drums, guitars, recorder and even the saxophone!! It was a real privilege to see the results of all the children’s hard work out of school. The weather held for our annual Sports Day and we had a wonderful day watching the children compete in their races. Congratulations to the Green Team who were the victors this year, as well as to the medal winners from each year group. A huge well done to everyone who took part. A special thank you to all of the Year 6 children who helped to ensure that the day ran smoothly on their final Sports Day at Primary School, making sure all the equipment was ready and helping to support the younger children. A huge thank you to the PTFA for organising the leavers disco that was held in the last week of term. It was a fantastic opportunity for the school to get together and wish our Year 6 children good luck. Haxey and Westwoodside schools came together for a church service for our leavers, which saw them all receive a bible. Everyone who attended this moving service agreed it was a special way to mark the end of an era. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house during the Year 6 leavers assembly, which saw our leavers entertain us with sketches, songs and their hopes and dreams for the future. A special thank you to the PTFA for producing a year book for each child full of memories of their Primary School years. Everyone at Haxey C of E Primary School wishes our leavers the very best for secondary school, they will all be missed, and we hope they drop in to see us from time to time. We hope you all had a fantastic summer and we look forward to seeing you all in September ready for the year ahead.

Misterton Community News RESIDENTS HAVE HAIRCUT FOR CHARITY Two Misterton residents, at either end of the age range, have had their long hair cut and donated their locks to the Little Princess Trust. The Trust makes real hair wigs for children and young people with hair loss, and funds research into childhood cancer. Sue Ivatt has lived in Misterton for two years, retiring after working as a programme administrator for London Underground followed by a spell in Spain. She decided shorter hair would suit her and was encouraged by friends and family. At the other end of the age range, teenager Kazzia Fox also decided to support the Trust. Pictured are both before and after their charity haircuts.

BOWLS CLUB CELEBRATES AGAIN! A resounding win in a friendly match against Cleethorpes, with a 146-119 scoreline, gave Misterton Bowls Club another cause for celebration.
