As the seasons change and we find ourselves moving through the year, one thing remains constant, the unwavering spirit of our community here in the Isle. It is a spirit that shows itself in countless ways, from the local events which come through the magazine to the events which remain unnoticed. If there is an event you think deserves coverage in the Arrow, let us know. Whether it’s the excitement of a local football match or a community bake sale, your contributions can make a difference.
As the evenings become cool and the days grow shorter, there’s one event on the horizon that promises to light up our community in the most brilliant way, The Lindsey Lodge Glow Walk. Scheduled for Friday 6th September, the Glow Hospice. Full details on page 15.
The October issue deadline for adverts and content is Wednesday 11th of September. The Arrow will be delivered by the 1st October.

Crowle Peatland Railway Steams Ahead
with New Locomotive!
Crowle Peatland Railway is thrilled to announce the arrival of LM336, a classic Wagonmaster locomotive from Ireland.
These powerful engines, built by the Hunslet Engine Company in the 1960s, played a vital role in transporting peat across Ireland for decades. Will Coleman, Trustee at the Railway, explains, "We're incredibly excited to welcome LM336. These locomotives are not only impressive machines, but also represent a significant chapter in Irish industrial history. LM336 will be a fantastic addition to our fleet, and we look forward to sharing it with visitors."
The arrival of LM336 is thanks in part to the generous donations of our members. Entry is £15, but if you're walking in a group of 5 or more, we're offering a discounted rate of £12.50 per person which you can select when purchasing your tickets. We'll have pre-event music and a fun warm up, and glow walkers are encouraged to literally light up the night with their outfits and accessories, whilst raising sponsorship to provide the much-needed funds Lindsey Lodge needs to continue to provide its care. For the last mile of the walk we are offering our walkers the option to walk with a memory lantern to remember their loved one.
When they return to the Hospice there will be a designated area in our garden where they leave their candle on the letters spelling out ‘Glow’ and write a message if they wish. There will also be a screen sharing memory photos of our walkers’ loved ones, which they can send in to us in advance by sending to marketing@lindseylodgehospice.org.uk
Whether it’s to walk in memory of a friend or loved one, a way of keeping fit, or simply to do something different with your friends on a Friday night – whatever the reason, you’ll be sure of a fantastic night – all in aid of Lindsey Lodge!

Our walk in July was around the town of Buxton in the High Peak of Derbyshire with the A&B groups starting off from The Cat and Fiddle, which used to be a pub and is now a distillery, and finishing off in Buxton. The C group, starting in the town, walked up to Solomons Temple and through Buxton Country park before everyone met up at The Pavilion Gardens, during what was the final day of the Buxton Fringe.
On September 15th we will be walking from Wetherby in West Yorkshire. There are still places available for this and future walks. Full details of our club and what we have to offer can be found on our website: www.doncasterhframblingclub.org.uk
Epworth and District Flower Club
The Club’s July meeting was held in the usual venue of St Andrew’s Church but this time there were already many examples of the talents of several of the club members in evidence.
The Church had been beautifully decorated for the Epworth Open Gardens weekend.
Jane Walden was welcomed and her talk was entitled “To inspire a workshop”. No-one knew quite what to expect but her talk was delightful with examples of many different ways of creating stunning displays. She showed the group how to wire palm leaves so they could be manipulated into various shapes. The technique could be applied to other foliage too. The flowers she added to her first arrangement of foliage were purple agapanthus, just opening. She used a wreath ring for her second arrangement and inserted contorted hazel and a variety of foliage before adding 5 enormous chrysanthemums.
Jane then fascinated members with her use of gutter protection wire and black birch twigs before adding green roses and pale small gerbera to create a green arrangement. She talked about the use of different materials and of her floral teaching career trying to encourage the use of different materials to create original designs.
A trellis was made using covered dogwood which had been bent into the required shape with the aid of the weight of a chair. Clematis and roses were the flowers added to alchemilla, hosta and hebe.
Then the final arrangement was created into a circle of two hoops bound with birch twigs. Lilies and stocks were the flowers added and looped phormium completed the stunning arrangement. Jane didn’t describe her talk as a demonstration but she talked through a lot of different ideas and techniques giving the members many ideas for creating stunning arrangements at home.
As usual there were several fortunate members when the raffle was drawn and additionally some members gave donations to the proceeds of the Open Garden event taking home a few of the arrangements which had been left in the Church.
There is no meeting in August but at 7.30pm on Monday, September 9th a florist from Doncaster will entertain. Do come along and join us. If you don’t wish to come regularly make sure you have tickets for the Open meeting on November 11th at South Axholme Academy. This is always a very popular and entertaining evening with Mark Entwistle demonstrating this year.

High Levels WI
At their June meeting the ladies of High Levels welcomed Gail, a local craft demonstrator. After the usual singing of Jerusalem routine business was quickly conducted and a brief resume of the NFWI annual meeting at The Royal Albert Hall was given. Three ladies had attended as observers and enjoyed a very thought-provoking day.
Then the evening was underway. Gail demonstrated making medallions for use as desired and each member was provided with a pack of clay. Cutters, embossed sheets and ribbons for hanging were available and soon there was a gentle hum of conversation as members rolled, cut and printed shapes which were to be used in such a variety of imaginative ways. Some were destined to be plant pot nametags, others coat hanger scented tags or gift tags. There was no end to suggested uses and eventually members took their creations home to be scented and varnished.
At the July meeting ladies welcomed Hannah Lamb from Yorkshire Edible Flowers. She gave an interesting talk about the business she ran with her husband. During the Covid restrictions they had developed a business growing herbs and edible flowers in an allotment. The business has grown remarkably, and Hannah explained their philosophy and how they have been helped by local grants. She talked enthusiastically of the development of the use of flowers in culinary and decorative ways and how their business is expanding. The talk was interspersed with the opportunity to taste a variety of flowers. There was a good deal of interaction from the members.
Congratulations were offered to the ladies who had entered the Federation Treasure Hunt earlier in the month and won! One member described how enjoyable that had been and another reported how enjoyable a group visit to the Cast at Doncaster had been to see Anton and Giovanni on stage in their show.
The September meeting will host Kate McNeill who will talk about “Boxy (the bull) and me”. You will see we have a variety of speakers and some interactive meetings and some outings. More of our activities are on our website: www.highlevelswi.co.uk
The Third Wednesday evening each month at 6.45 in the Reindeer Inn, Sandtoft. Do come to visit and give us a try. We have refreshments and a raffle and this year we are making monthly donations to the local food bank so you will see we are not inward looking.
