Welcome to the September issue of the Arrow!
The Summer holidays are over and back to school the kids go! We do hope everyone had a wonderful time whether you stayed at home or ventured on holiday. As I am writing this editorial thousands of youngsters over the UK anxiously await their A level and GCSE results. I am certainly one of those parents waiting with fingers crossed. There are certainly plenty of choices whether to go to University or take an apprenticeship. The choices are massive for our youngsters today. This months edition we have 2 schools and a college offering great opportunities in further education and there are Open days too. Wishing everyone luck with their exam results! The deadline for the October issue is Wednesday 13th September for distribution by the 1st October.

The Apple of Your Isle – Apples Day Do you grow apples in your garden? Or perhaps you would be interested in growing fruit? If you have apple trees, maybe you’re nervous about looking after them and pruning them? Perhaps you have some old apple varieties that you can't identify?
4
If any of this rings a bell with you, then look out for a new event coming to Epworth this October. On Saturday 14 October from 11 to 3pm the Apple of Your Isle are bringing an Apple Day to the Old Rectory gardens. Among the things on offer will be a chance for you to bring some of your apples and help turn them into apple juice (maximum 2 supermarket bags of fruit; you will need some bottles to take the juice home in). We’ll have experts on hand to help you identify your apples and also some short workshops on how to prune your trees. There will be music, apple related produce to sample and buy, as well as games to play. All this, and there’s no charge to attend. It should be a great day out. Community News Men's Society notches up 60th anniversary An Isle organisation will be notching up the diamond jubilee of its foundation later in the year. It is the Epworth Men’s Society, which attracts members from all over the Isle of Axholme as well as some from the Doncaster area. “The Society was formed by the then vicar at the town’s parish church of St Andrew’s, the Rev Bill Harvey” explained Society President, Ken Bickerstaff. “The area had a lot more agricultural workers that it has today and the organisation was there to give them an interest during the winter and spring months,” he added. To make the occasion members will be holding their 60th annual dinner on Monday, October 2, with a three-course meal at Hatfield's near Doncaster. A free bus will be provided for members to get to the venue. The Men's Society holds monthly meetings with speakers, as well as trips to places of interest, from October through to its AGM in May. Anyone interested in finding out more about the organisation is invited to call Ken Bickerstaff on 01427 872288 Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Saturday September 16th 8am till 11am Moth morning The group's last outdoor event is a moth morning at Geoff and Chris Trinder's house in Belton where anyone can come along and see the moths which have been attracted to lights during Friday night. This gives people a chance to get a close look at the variety of moths which are around in our gardens. They come in many sizes and colours, often with beautiful patterns on their wings.. Not only will there be moths to see and photograph if you wish, but there will be bacon buttys, tea and coffee, all for £3. The event is open to anyone and we hope you will join us at The Croft, 32 Carrhouse Road, Belton, DN9 1PG. Our indoor meetings begin again on October 5th with a talk on hedgehogs by Frank and Veronica Tett who run a hedgehog rescue centre. All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a member.

The Scunthorpe and Goole Macmillan Cancer Support group has raised well over £1million since it started. Not only does this help to fund Macmillan nurses, but also to provide grants for local patients in need of financial assistance with anything from which they will benefit, such as transport costs, shower installations, etc. It also funds the Macmillan information centres at Scunthorpe, Goole and Grimsby hospitals, all manned by local volunteers. Last year we raised just over £900 to help support services in our local area. We would like to do the same again(or better?) this year…. “This gorgeous boy is Rocky, a three year old Border Collie cross. Rocky is a lovely, friendly boy- a typical energetic Collie, and we are looking for an active home for him where he will get plenty of exercise. He is ok with other dogs and has lived with young children, although he may be a bit too bouncy for tinies! Rocky is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you are interested in meeting this lovely boy, give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.”

Epworth and District Flower Club Update. Several members of the club enjoyed a visit to the NGS garden of Mrs Los at Everingham on a miserable June evening. However, the lack of sunshine and the coolness of the breeze couldn’t detract from the enjoyment of wandering around the six or so acres of informal gardens so obviously tended lovingly by Mrs Los. Members admired the careful arrangement of flowers and shrubs according to colour and textures and the inclusion of so many natural features created by the trees and their bark and fallen trunks. There was a woodland stroll and even a small lake both of which were enjoyed by all of the members. To complement the evening there were teas and coffee and delicious cakes served and enjoyed while Mrs Los answered many questions. Finally, before leaving members were able to purchase a selection of shrubs and plants. In July members had a practical evening following a short talk from Robin Adair of Stonecrop Nurseries. There were planters of different shapes and sizes available to purchase for those who hadn’t taken their own and plants and shrubs too. Many members were very busy creating their own arrangements to put both inside and outside their homes. As the Autumn draws on the September meeting will be a demonstration entitled “Go Foam Free” given by Maggie Wootten of the Scunthorpe Flower Club. This meeting departs from the usual second Monday of the month and will be held on Tuesday, 12th September. Please check with members for the venue. October will see the Club return to its usual home, the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey, and the usual meeting time of 7.30pm on Monday, 9th October. It will be a Members Evening, with Autumn themed demonstrations by members. So another evening to look forward to. I hope this synopsis has given you an insight into what the Club does and you feel you might like to join us. Celia Jones 01427 874042

Owston Ferry Society starts their Autumn season of talks on Wednesday 13th September at The Coronation Hall 7.30pm. Tony Barber will give a talk entitled "The Carnival of the North (The Story of the St Leger)". Non members welcome. £2.50 includes refreshments.
Haxey Women’s Institute In July, we had a trip to Southwell Minster, followed by a visit to Southwell Workhouse. This was open to non-WI members and the consensus was that it had been a very enjoyable day. Our August meeting saw us welcome Judy Colby as our speaker. Judy, an extremely talented and resourceful lady, gave us an insight into her ‘hobby’ as Wardrobe Mistress for the Midland Theatre in Sheffield. What began as a tentative offer to ‘lend a hand’ in this amateur group has evolved over decades into what appears to be an all-consuming unpaid job! Judy spends many hours frequenting market-stalls, charity shops and auction houses searching for just the right types and colours of fabrics – often curtains! – in order to create clothing that will look completely authentic in the theatre group’s productions. This invariably means a great deal of research on Judy’s part which she undertakes with enthusiasm – her main problem nowadays seems to be storage of the costumes! WI members were full of admiration of Judy’s skills, not only with the costumes on display, but also her talents with the props she’s created – not least the very realistic-looking lettuce leaves!
Our next event will be on Saturday 2nd September – we will be holding a ‘CREAM TEA’ in Haxey Memorial Hall, to which everyone is warmly invited. In addition to scones, jam and cream, served with tea or coffee, there will also be a raffle. Entry cost: £3; Time: 2pm-4pm. Please come and join us – you’ll be very welcome!
On Friday 29th September at St Martin's Church at 10am there will be a McMillan Coffee Morning. Lots of lovely cakes to eat and at the same time raise money for this very worthy cause.

They have done bake sales, yard sales raising £110 and have a big sponsored swim event coming up at Epworth Leisure Centre working in conjunction with The Rotary Club and raising money for Breast Cancer Research as well as LIVES on this event which is on 3rd September. The Heroic Helpers are Natalia Bradwell, Imogen Harris, Jaipreet Mattu, Isabella Ash and they are raising money for Pride Of The Isle. They have raised £770 by doing a local bake sale and helping at a Pride Of The Isle event in Scotter and they also have a sponsored walk coming up on 21st August. Additionally the main event for both teams was when they joined up together on one occasion to organise a Charity Garden Party which was held on Monday 7th August in Belton - it was a great success as the weather was perfect and between them they managed to raise just over £650 to split between both charities! They had cakes, strawberries, coffee, bouncy castle, skittles, Netball, Teddy Tombola etc and a Raffle with some fabulous prizes as the girls managed to secure some very generous donations from local businesses which they were all very grateful for. Both teams will be continuing with their missions over the summer but I have attached a few photos from the Garden Party and also a photo of Imogen and Natalia running the cake stall at the Pride Of The Isle event in Scotter.

Community News Have you ever picked a tasty blackberry off a bramble and wondered what other wild foods there were that you could eat? Well a group of eleven year old girls from Epworth and Owston Ferry could help you find one. Keisha, Kayla, Bethany and Natalie are taking part in the Humberside police lifestyle challenge this year and are encouraging you to get your wellies on and join them in an amble across the Isle looking for a bramble or two. So if you fancy a wild blackberry or to discover exactly what you can do with elderberries or the taste of clover this is an event to put into your calendar. The walk will take place at the village hall in Owston Ferry 10am on 2nd September All you need to bring with you is a container for your harvest and a sense of adventure. If you canýt make the walks, donýt worry you can catch up with the girls at one of the local shows across the Isle, here they will have leaflets they have designed themselves and demonstrations of how to grow your own vegetables. It might be possible to pick up a few seeds and have a go at growing something in your own garden. Or you can have a look at their facebook page (Isle Bramble Amble)to catch up on their handy tips and hints for eating healthy. There are recipes on what to do with the vegetables you have grown or the food you have foraged, plus pictures of people taking part in the activities the girls have arranged. Better still you could post your own picture of your vegetable patches to show your support. Already they have visited three local primary schools, St Martinýs in Owston Ferry, Haxey Primary and West Butterwick Primary. Many of the children tasted some wild food and all took home a seed they planted in class. Attended Wroot Feast and Owston Ferry Field day where people of all ages planted seeds, had a taste of elderberry jam and learnt about the dead nettle family of plants. The girls would like to thank all the companies that have supported them Leeds Transformers for the money to buy the leaflets, Holmes and Gardens Centre in Epworth for a huge donation of seeds. Spanning the millennia from the Ice Age to present day, Epworth, The History of an Axholme Town, charts the story of Epworth and its association with local, national and international events. It tells of the Epworth man William de Mowbray, who wielded such power that he, along with 24 others, was charged with ensuring King John remained true to the Charter of Liberties we now know as Magna Carta. It raises the profile of Epworth born men who went on to influence the world. Puritan, Richard Bernard, whose writings and teachings went with the Pilgrim Father’s and found their way into the texts of the American Constitution; William Hutchinson, whose invention revolutionised steel making and led to the Sheffield becoming renowned for the quality of its steel products; Epworth farmer George Hughes, who helped establish sheep farming in New Zealand and was instrumental in its rise to nationhood, and of course, Epworth’s most famous son - John Wesley. Written by Isle historian Bob Fish the book's 256 seeks to separate fact from superstition and myth, examine the cause and outcome of the riots of the 18th and 19th centuries and bring the reader closer to the significantly rich history of this small English town. Well all is quiet on the Pride of the Isle front, or at least that what it will feel like to our followers. With few events going on during the summer months we have little to report on, and little seemingly going on. However as always with any committee, there is lots in the planning stages. The Charity for any new readers and followers, was founded in memory of Isle’s youngster Alexander Strong who died at the age of seven after battling a rare form a Children’s cancer. We support adults and children with cancer and disabilities, and our annual awards night recognise people who have committed acts of bravery and kindness. We are a non-salaried charity committed to supporting terminally ill adults and children, creating memories or providing aids and/or treatment to improve their lives. We are currently planning and preparing for our 2018 Pride of the Isle Awards Night, to take place Saturday 27th January 2018 – venue of which is yet to be confirmed. Tickets are now on sale and can be bought through our website www.prideoftheisle.co.uk on a first come first served basis – so be quick we expect it to be a sell out. You can find more information out about this event, how to donate or if you would like to become an official sponsor by visiting our website or by contacting our Chair of the Committee Leesa Sharpe - leesa@prideoftheisle.com. The annual Awards Night of this year, 2017, was a steaming success. Held at the Vulcan Hangar in Finningley we saw in excess of 700 people attending including ACTRESS Sheridan Smith OBE, a Patron of the awards; "I am so proud to be the Patron of the Pride of the Isle Award and to be here at this year's awards. It is a tremendous privilege. This is an absolutely wonderful charity and it's so humbling to be a small part of an organisation that does so much for so many people suffering from life-limiting illnesses. I am so grateful to Leesa, Maxine and the Committee for inviting me to be here at the Annual Awards , and to be able to pay my tribute to the wonderful people of the Isle. We should all be proud of this fantastic charity and all the good work it has done and will do in the future." Facebook comments flooded in following the annual event, “Fantastic, I thoroughly enjoyed the night as did my 15 year old, couldn't keep him away from the cars!!!! Also a very humbling experience” “Truly amazing night, so well organised in a fantastic venue, and all for a good cause. Thanks to everyone involved and how brilliant were those little award winners” We raised £23,000.00 and pledged to put this back into helping local people. It truly was an emotional, humbling yet glitzy and enjoyable evening with plenty of food, drink, and entertainment. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house! So we ask, what did we achieve at our awards night 2017… a really high bar for which next year we can only hope to smash so we can continue to help those within our local community. We couldn’t do this without you, our wonderful followers, so we once again send massive big thanks and well wishes to you all.

Second Life Saving Defibrillator Installed in West Stockwith
Another potentially life saving defibrillator is now in place in West Stockwith, located outside the front door of the Waterfront Inn on Canal Lane in the village. The Public Access Defibrillator (PAD), which can be used to shock the heart of a cardiac arrest victim, was funded by donations and grants from North Notts Lions Club, West Stockwith Parish Council, Five Villages First Responders and Cllr Hazel Brand. The local voluntary Five Villages First Responders (FVFR) team have been involved in installing seventeen such defibrillators within the local area over the 3 years, including one’s in Misterton, Beckingham, Walkeringham, Gringley on the Hill, Everton, Clayworth and other local villages. Martyn Johnson, Coordinator of FVFR said: “The defibrillators are located in secure yellow cabinets on the outside of the buildings. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, should they be required in the case of someone nearby suffering from a sudden cardiac arrest. When a cardiac arrests happens, the patient will suddenly collapse, will be unresponsive and either not be breathing at all, or only occasionally gasping. Rapid help in the form of calling immediately for an ambulance via 999, starting CPR (chest compressions and rescue breaths) and the use of an automated defibrillator can vastly improve the chances of survival for the patient.” All the defibrillators in the area are logged by East Midlands Ambulance Service on their Computer Dispatch system, and if a 999 call happens nearby and one of the defibrillators is required, the 999 ambulance operator will give instructions to the caller - telling them that there is a defib nearby and the code to open the cabinet. “If someone is then able to fetch it to the patients side, while another person performs CPR this will help improve the chance of survival”, said Martyn. Once the defib is by the patients side the lid is opened and the user simply follows the audio and visual instructions to place the adhesive pads on the patients chest. The ambulance operator will also give instructions over the phone. The defibrillator will check to see if the patient’s heart is in a rhythm that requires a shock, and if it is the defibrillator will deliver one. They are simple and safe to use. While all of this is happening the ambulance service will still be sending emergency resources straight to the scene following the 999 call. But if CPR can be carried out and a defib can be used within the first minutes after a cardiac arrests occurs the chances of the patient being successfully resuscitated are much greater. Martyn said: “We’d like to pass on our thanks to all the organisations who have come together to fund this defibrillator and to Karen and Stewart from the Waterfront Inn for all their help and assistance and for agreeing to host this potentially life saving piece of equipment for the community outside of their venue.” The unit at Waterfront Inn is the second one to be placed in West Stockwith, with the other being located outside on the wall of the Gertrude Morris Village Hall on Main Street. Further free to attend awareness sessions which include how to perform CPR and how to use a defibrillator run by FVFR will be held in Misterton and West Stockwith in the coming months, and these will be publicised locally.
