Editor’s letter...

Carolyn, Julie & Michelle! Welcome to the May/June issue of the Pontefract Arrow. Congratulations to the winners of our Doncaster Racecourse competition for tickets to see Status Quo on Saturday 17th May. The Lucky winners were Karen Moore from Epworth and Steve Naylor from Sprotbrough. I hope you have a fantastic evening. Thank you to everyone who took part in the competition, the response was great. I need to hear from some more local groups so if you chair any local meetings, manage any sport teams or are a member of a regular community group and would like to share your news and events with everyone else in Pontefract, please let me know, e-mail me on the details below and we will publish your news free! Likewise, if you would like to advertise your business in the Arrow, contact me for costs, you will be surprised how little it is to advertise your business in a magazine which is read, shared and enjoyed. The deadline for the Jun/July issue will be Wednesday 28th May. Farewell for now, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 01302 534256 / 07795 387937 Email: michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk

NOSTELL MINERS WELFARE CLUB HISTORY Records exist that a team from Nostell Colliery won a Wakefield district football competition in the 1890’s. The club has photographs of Nostell Colliery teams from 1915 & 1921. at that time the football field was not in the present location but on two sites fairly close by. The miner’s welfare was formed in 1928 after the purchase of The land by the Miners trust fund. The sum of £400 was paid to a local land owner for 4.5 acres which includes the land on which the present ground is situated. A miner’s welfare football team was formed and enjoyed early success. the club owns a medal donated by a former player from the 1930’s and a photograph of the team who won the Wakefield district league in 1938. After the war the welfare provided much needed recreation for the local community and the football team was successful in several annual football competitions. In the late fifties a team from the Welfare visited Belgium to Compete against local opposition, a feat unprecedented at that time. The club are proud owners of the trophy won on that successful tour. In the late 60’s the club had a period of sustained success, Winning several Wakefield district competitions and eventually being selected in to the West Yorkshire league, lifting the league and Cup double in the 1966/67 season. However the successful team eventually broke up and the club went back to the Wakefield league in the early 1970’s. enjoying relative success the club began to develop again, two teams were formed, the first team joining the West Yorkshire league in 1982. Following mining subsidence to the ground, fund raising of over £30,000 allowed the pitch to be levelled off, drainage installed and other ground improvements. However Nostell Colliery was closed. The nearby colliery houses (1st to 7th street) were demolished and the Welfare Struggled to survive. The football continued through this difficult period. Promotions through the divisions of the West Yorkshire league eventually led us through to our present NCEL premier division status.

The most successful period in the clubs distinguished history was about to begin with the appointment of Alan Colquhoun in the late 1990’s. After initially struggling in the Premier League the Club gradually improved, eventually being crowned Champions of the West Yorkshire Premier League lifting the corresponding cup and appearing in 3 consecutive finals, 2 County Cup final appearances and lifting 6 Wakefield & District trophies among other successes. Off the field the introduction of the Coalfield Regeneration Trust Encouraged other people to invest in the Miners Welfare. Renamed Crofton Community Centre approximately £1.5 million has been secured to provide the present facilities with Sport England, Football Foundation and the FA providing substantial sums of money to help the football side of the developments. With the improvements on and off the field a successful application to the Northern Counties East League was made heralding a new and exciting venture for the Club. Since gaining promotion to the NCEL, Nostell finished a respectable 4th in their first season 2006/7. Due to the Unibond league reforming its structure, along with one NCEL going to the wall for financial reasons, Nostell gained promotion to the NCEL Premier league. A terrific first season in the premier league 2007/8 saw Nostell finish 5th, having led the division for the first quarter. This was followed by a disappointing 2008/9 where they finished 13th after a congested run in. However Nostell who were the underdogs beat Scarborough Athletic over 2 legs to win the “Presidents Cup”, probably the highest point of Nostell’s recent history. During season 2008/9 Nostell had their first player to be signed for a football league club. Stockport County signed Oli Johnson who impressed during a friendly fixture. After one season at Stockport Oli has since signed for Norwich City, with his goals helped Norwich to become 1st division champions. The last two seasons have been disappointing with a 17th place finish to each.

It's all about … When, Where & How? We all love a BBQ with friends and family, its either a great social affair where the grown ups eat too much and drink a little too much well into the evening or a small family affair where everyone is involved from children to Grandparents! Whatever your occasion, we normally dine in the garden after a veritable feast has been prepared in the kitchen and on the gas/charcoal BBQ and that's exactly how it should be.

Relaxed or Formal Dining?

Relaxed dining, rattan sofa sets or formal dining, cube rattan, teak or any other sort of dining table and chairs, which do you prefer, or which should you choose? If you’re lucky enough to have the space to BBQ, then dine on a stunning formal outside dining set and then when you’re fit to explode, retire to your beautiful rattan sofa set, lucky you! However, if you don’t have the space or the budget for both, which should you have? Well ultimately it will be a matter of personal choice but always try think which you will use the most. Formal outside dining sets are great providing a comfortable place to eat with lots of table top space, however, once you have eaten, most are not built for you to sit back and relax. This is where the sofa suite takes top prize. A rattan sofa set is perfect for chilling out, enjoying drinks with friends, eating nibbles and finger food off your knee and then when your fit to burst, relax into your super comfy rattan sofa or arm chair. If you ask me, the Rattan sofa set wins every time, but that's my choice, what's yours?

A Word of Warning...

If your buying teak then make sure it is best quality seasoned teak and not sapling wood teak. Sapling teak furniture is cost effective but when it dries out it will become “loose” and badly fitting. Spruce is a great alternative, lasts as long and is a much better price. If your buying Rattan sofa sets or dining sets then you really need to look hard. There are many types of Rattan weave and frames. A must is aluminium frames and the way in which the weave is attached is very important. If you need any advice we have a great selection of outdoor furniture, BBQ's and parasols, from cube dining and Spruce formal dining to small two seater sets and fantastic Rattan sofa sets. Call in at Bentleys and we will only be to happy to help you make the right choice.

Ever thought of Table Top Cooking or Bon-Fire Cooking? With the introduction of Pod BBQ's and the incredible “Hot-Wok”, tabletop cooking is going to be a great alternative to the larger BBQ. They are perfect for when you don't want to drag out that big BBQ or spend 20 minutes cleaning it from last nights use. They are neat and compact and ready in a minute. If you want to take a sneak peak then call in and we can show you what it's all about. Just call in and take a l ook at the alternatives we have to your everyday BBQ's.
