Editor’s letter...
Carolyn, Julie & Michelle! Welcome to the April issue of the Sandal Arrow, thank you to everyone who has been in contact with information and feedback. It’s all appreciated. I need to hear from some more local groups so if you chair any local meetings, manage any sport teams or are a member of a regular community group and would like to share your news and events with everyone else in Sandal, please let me know, e-mail me on the details below and we will publish your news free! Likewise, if you would like to advertise your business in the Arrow, contact me for costs, you will be surprised how little it is to advertise your business in a magazine which is read, shared and enjoyed. Checkout this month's competition for free tickets to see Status Quo at the Doncaster Race Course, it promises to be a fun packed evening, so don’t forget to e-mail me your name, that’s all it takes! The deadline for the May issue will be Wednesday 30th April. Farewell for now, and I hope to hear from you soon.

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, lives are turned upside down in an instant. Not just for the child but for their parents, siblings, family and friends. Priorities change and everyday concerns suddenly seem trivial.
Ingleborough
Getting well again can be a long and challenging journey, physically, emotionally and financially. Helping and supporting those children and their families throughout that journey is why Yorkshire charity Candlelighters was formed nearly 40 years ago and it is why they are still here today. Join Candlelighters on 3rd May for this fantastic adventure where you will tackle the Yorkshire Three Peaks; Pen Y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough all in a single day. Registration is £50 and covers all costs including full event support, meaning every penny you raise in sponsorship directly supports children, and their families, fighting cancer in Yorkshire. Find out more on our website, email info@candlelighters.org.uk or call us on 0113 247 0372. For more information about Candlelighters and how you can get involved visit www.candlelighters.org.uk and together we CAN fight children’s cancer.

We all love to see our gardens in tip top shape, neat and tidy and waiting to be enjoyed by family and friends, but do we all enjoy the work it takes to get it looking like that? Unfortunately not! So for those of you who peer out the window and cringe, read on… Sometimes is not just the lack of interest in the garden, it really is simply finding the time, all that weeding, pruning and planting etc takes time and care. If this rings a bell, maybe you need a low maintenance garden. Why not start with a really easy project—a border! All you need is a roll of weed control (£6.95 for 10m x 1m roll), lay it out in your desired location and add slate or stones on top (prices range from £10 for 4 bags). There you have it, an instant effect which looks good. No more weeding too!
Every year we make many trips to garden centres and wander aimlessly, looking for something to inspire us. Often enough, we leave with something which is inappropriate for our garden and doesn't really have any impact on the finished product. In our life time we spend over £10000 on plants for the garden! If we got it right first time, we would spend a fraction of that. Low maintenance planting is not difficult, you just need specimen plants, great planters and a local company that is willing to spend a little time advising you how to get there each step of the way. A low maintenance, beautiful, thought through designer feel garden is not difficult to achieve, you just need the right people to talk too. If you are interested in working towards a low maintenance garden that looks like it’s had a designer plan it, then drop into Bentleys. Come armed with your ideas on your phone, ipad or even a rough drawing and we will show you how easy and cost effective low maintenance can be.
Next, we look at ‘the instant garden’ and low maintenance. It’s good to have a plan, even if it is just an idea of how you want your garden to look and the colours you would like to see.

Maybe Another Colour? Why is it when we’re buying planters we only have the choice of glazed Blue, Black, that awful Green or Terracotta? Where are the fab planters in different sizes in Reds, Yellow, Purples, Oranges or any other colour you want if it comes to it? If you’re not into gardening and want low maintenance then flowers are probably not high on your list for your garden. Having to know when they flower, what compost to use, when to plant them and so on. Low maintenance gardeners want all year round greenery in the shape of Yucca, Cordylines, Palms etc etc but as much as Green is great it really is nice to add a bit of colour and this can be done by being a little bold with planter colours and Bentleys is the place where we can do almost any colour of planter you want in any size. Long gone are the days of no choice, zero interest, no help and so on. At Bentleys we want you to have the garden you really want and deserve but have never known how to get it. Designer looks and great trees and plants don’t have to cost the earth. You can have it all with our advice and a little help from yourself. Bentleys of Pontefract, Outdoor Lifestyle Centre, Wakefield Road, Pontefract. Were just by the main lights in Pontefract (Look for the Palm trees and Olive trees). Open Tuesday – Sunday. So much to see and so much free advice and help. PLUS we deliver everything FREE. www.bigbentleys.co.uk. Facebook bentleysofpontefract

Samba in Sandal 4th July 2014,- A good day for Carnival in Wakefield And that is just what the children of Castle Grove and Sandal Endowed schools plan to do......
2 becomes 1! 2014 see's the plans set into motion as Castle Grove and Sandal Endowed schools become one. The idea being that the transition from one school to another becomes seamless with all the children benefitting from early and longer lasting friendships in a secure familiar environment as well as a continuity in their education. A great reason to celebrate, plans for themes, costumes, masks and headdresses have started with many weeks ahead of sewing, glueing, applying feathers, sequins, beads and glitter! Gorgeous imaginative designs and lessons about Carnival and it's origins are being organised and a feeling of PARTY, FIESTA, FOREVER is beginning to grip the imaginations of not just the children but the teachers, (a few sneaky shakings of maracas and merenge moves have been spotted in the school hall Sponsors for this wonderful event are embraced warmly and every penny raised will be providing a school uniform for all our children. Anyone interested in booking a stall at a cost of £5.00, please contact Helen or Jayne at Castle Grove on 01924 303285.
