Editor’s letter... Welcome to the September issue of the Sandal Arrow. Now with batteries recharged, we head towards the Autumn with lots to look forward to. We have two lucky winners from July’s Arrow, James Blunt Competition; Sarah Henley from Hatfield and Janine Palin from Scunthorpe. Congratulations to you both, I hope you had a fantastic day. We will report the results from the Ledger competition in next month’s Arrow, however as you can see, we have another competition for tickets to see the Racing Post Trophy in October, don’t forget to email me for a chance to win! Talking about racing… after training for over a year, I am taking part in the Great North Run on Sunday 7th September with my running partner, Dave Chorlton. I am running for Cancer Research and if you would like to support my charity, you can make a donation by texting MISI98 and the amount you would like to donate to 70070. Thank you, I will let you know if we made it next month! Don’t forget, if you have any information you would like to share in the Sandal and The Walton Arrow, please send it to me by e-mail before the deadline below.

Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom

Sandal Community Association, which has represented the interests of the people of Sandal since 2005, is continually developing its services to members and the wider community, making widespread use of social media. The SCA is on now on Twitter @sandalvillage and its Facebook page is providing a regular news service with plenty of interaction with its followers. Frequent photo features on residents’ activities and achievements appear here and on the revamped website at www.sandal.org.uk. One of the website’s developing features in 2014 – the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War – has been its War Dead pages which provide a deeply researched Roll of Honour of Sandal, Walton and Newmillerdam men who gave their lives during both world wars. The Association is keen to add photographs of the fallen and a start has been made on this in the past few months. If you have ancestors or relatives whose names appear on local war memorials, the Association would be delighted to hear from you. Send an email to info@sandal.org.uk or call 256644. The Association’s broader aims are to: • Protect and enhance the quality of our environment for present and future generations. • Provide information and raise awareness of planning, community and traffic issues throughout the area. • Offer a basis for dialogue and contact with Wakefield District Council and to make an input into development planning processes. • Encourage community spirit through social events. The Association distributes regular newsletters throughout the whole of the community and was the catalyst for the launch of the Friends of Sandal Castle. It set up Sandal Gardening Club and this year has taken the already successful Sandal Art Group under its wing. All three have individual pages in the Community section of the website. The Association was also instrumental in the launch of the Sandal Singles22 group for people of all ages who are single for whatever reason. Annual membership of the Association costs only £6 per household. Send a cheque to the treasurer, Phil Carter, at 35 Marriott Grove, Sandal, Wakefield WF2 6RP, or call him on 254659. Sandal Community Association is organising its third handbag auction in aid of Yorkshire Air Ambulance, this time at Sandal Rugby Club on Wednesday, September 24. Viewing is from 7pm and the auction begins at 8pm. Last autumn’s auction made £1,500 which was handed over to the YAA by Association committee members earlier this year.

Knock-Knock

You may not realise this but when you visit someone, whether it’s for the first time or not, you create an instant impression about their home as soon as you reach the front door. It’s an impression you create based on what you see around you. That’s why it’s important to have a beautiful, stylish and inviting door entrance rather than an unloved, un-styled and sad looking entrance. Don’t worry there are numerous things you can do to get a real wow factor and create that perfectly impressive entrance and we are here to help. Something very simple yet very stylish is to have easy to look after door planters. Display them on either side of the door or in its vicinity. There are many types of tree or plant that are very easy to look after and that live very happily in a planter. Such as:-

Buxus Sempervirens Is one of the best topiary trees as they come in many shapes and sizes, including double, triple and quad balls, cones and spirals to mention just a few.

Buxus Latin for 'box' and believed to derive from its use to make small, finely carved boxes known in Greek as pyxos. Buxus is also Latin for flute so the name may come from its use to make flutes.

Sempervirens ‘semper’ is Latin for ‘always’ and ‘virens’ is ‘green’. This evergreen shrub is, generally, thought of as purely decorative but it was believed in years gone by that it played an important role in keeping witches from entering the house or when used as a border, from stealing plants from the garden. The Bay Tree Can be found in many forms, such as cork screw stem, double cork screw, pyramid, 1/4, 1/2 and full standard trees. They make stunning door planters as they are ever green and a well planted example always looks super impressive. Romans considered the bay tree a symbol of glory as well as protection from thunderstorms. Nero believed bay trees purified the air and Roman victors would wipe the blood from their swords with the leaves. Thankfully today we only use the leaves for cooking! There are many types of trees and plants that can be used as door planters or around your patio and the choice is only dwarfed by the massive choice of planters to put them in, from tall, sleek, minimalistic contemporary high cubes to the more rustic vase, urn or Kensington planter and let’s not get into the 500 colours of planter we can offer. There is a style for every one and also a price to suit everyone too, no matter what your budget. Door planters can be great fun if you go a bit "out there" and have gloss Red, Brinzaal, Gold or Orange, we don't have to stick to Black and Grays. We can add twinkle lights for that extra "Va Va Voom".

Why not make a change to the usual gifts you buy friends and family? Order them a surprise delivery from Bentleys of one or two door planters? Here at Bentleys we create hundred’s of stunning planters each year and deliver them to delighted customers. We will help you choose the right tree for your space and the right planter for your style. Come on down and take a peek, you will be surprised. Thank You!

You may recall that we recently published an article regarding Shaun McDermott's team bid to raise funds for the Charity Help For Heroes. Their challenge was to climb the three highest peaks in England, Scotland & Wales respectively and in straight succession. The walk was also to commemorate 100 years since the outbreak of The Great War, and the 70th anniversary of the Normandy D-Day Landings. I received this update from Shaun; ‘I am very pleased to inform you that our team recently completed this challenge in 18 hours and 23 minutes. The weekend was a complete success, and everyone enjoyed the experience. With your kind help, and that of your readership, we managed to raise a whopping £1,459 for the charity...£459 more than our intended target! On behalf of all of our walking team, and of course the charity, I would like to express our sincerest thanks to you and your readers for your support in this venture. Thanks again. Shaun McDermott, Akela, 1st/36th Warmsworth Cub Pack
