News, News, News, News, News, News Park View Surgery Patient Participation Group, Newton Lane, Sprotbrough Is a committee that was formed to support and help raise funds to buy new equipment and furniture for the Park View Surgery, in the hope to make the Surgery more comfortable for the patients attending it. Over the years the committee have given up their time voluntary to help keep the committee going and help provide the surgery with the new equipment required. This year the Participation group have arranged various events and trips to continue the fundraising and are in the process of purchasing two new high back chairs and some new books and toys for the childrens area within the Surgery.
Our next few events are as follow:L to R: Angela Gilpin & Cynthia Campsall
Sprotbrough Sponsors Sub Aqua Snowbound Stroll Sprotbrough has done it again – responded generously to a call for sponsorship for a charitable cause. Doncaster Sub Aqua Club completed an 8 mile walk from the Clubhouse in Greyfriars Road to the Boat Inn, Sprotbrough via the river bank and back again. Living in Sprotbrough, Cynthia Campsall decided to do the walk in reverse, joining a dozen dive buddies at the Clubhouse on Sunday 21 st February to complete the walk, having already covered the course from Sprotbrough alone and, as it turned out, in a raging blizzard. Cynthia would like to say a big thank you to Sprotbrough residents who contributed over £200 to her total of £336.50. The Club estimates a final total of over £1000 and have already sent £500 to the Royal National Lifeboat Institute in memory of Neil Rodgers who died on a diving expedition. Well done, Sprotbrough!

News, News, News, News, News, News Friends of Sprotbrough Cricket Club - Sponsorship & Membership Opportunities Sprotbrough Cricket Club is at the heart of the village, situated behind the Ivanhoe Public House in a superb tree-surrounded & stone-walled setting. The club runs nine separate teams, four in Senior League cricket and five in the Junior section from Under 17‘s down the age range to Under 9‘s. Providing cricket at both a competitive and fun level, for all ages, in a friendly, welcoming and steadily improving environment are the core values the Committee at Sprotbrough Cricket Club seek to engender. The cricket ground is in constant use virtually every day from mid-April to early-September and it is great to see so many players, umpires, club supporters and spectators enjoying cricket at Sprotbrough. Of course, running a club of this size on an annual basis takes quite a lot of effort and resources. We have to be self-sufficient in financing the club as we have no benefactor or opportunity to raise funds from a bar/social club due to the close proximity of the Ivanhoe Pub. Fund-raising is therefore constant and imperative for the club to survive and prosper in the future. The club has actively raised money for new nets, a bowling machine, covers for the wicket, ground equipment replacement and clubhouse facility improvements.
Our next project is to replace the scoreboard with a properly-designed version that will last for many years, and we would like to provide more club playing equipment to assist the players with their cricket. We are therefore seeking support from existing and potential ―Friends of Sprotbrough Cricket Club‖ You may want to play as a Member, become a Social Member (we have some great social events during the year), sponsor playing kit with your company logo, sponsor a match or match ball, or simply make a donation to assist the club; whatever you feel appropriate would be very welcome and greatly appreciated. If you feel you would like to join us in making and keeping Sprotbrough Cricket Club a vibrant, active and enjoyable place for people to spend some of their leisure time, please contact any of the Committee Members listed below, return the form overleaf or visit www.sprotbroughcc.co.uk for details. Thank you for taking the time to read this. The Committee Sprotbrough CC (1941)

Attention ISA Investors – ―How To Increase The Return on Your Investments By £76,952‖ You won‘t hear this from the fund management industry. But a number of studies have shown that approximately 70 to 80% of actively managed investment funds fail to produce better long term returns than the particular market that they are invested in. In most cases investors would have achieved better performance with an index tracker instead of paying higher fees. One of the best value UK FTSE Index trackers has an annual management charge of just 0.10%. Many managed funds have annual management charges of over 1.5%. These charges, when compounded can make a huge difference to ISA investors‘ ultimate returns. Based on the same investment performance and an assumed growth rate of 7% per annum, £10,200 yearly contributions into an ISA over 20 years the investment value at the end of 20 years would be £76,952 higher with the lower cost index tracker, than with the managed fund. If higher growth was achieved the difference would be greater and the opposite would be true if the growth rate was lower. Expert opinions "A very low-cost index is going to beat a majority of the amateur-managed money or professionallymanaged money" Warren Buffet, world‘s richest person in 2008 "We consistently see that once you extend time horizons to five years, the majority of active managers are behind their benchmarks," Srikant Dash, global head of research and design at S&P

Work is Underway! Last month we said that the appearance of St Mary‘s Church, Sprotbrough would change dramatically and it has as our photo shows! The good news though is that the urgent work on the ancient building is underway and progressing well. It is now not safe to use the Church for services whilst the next section of work takes place so we‘ve moved to the newly refurbished Church Hall on Main Street for our services. Further updates on progress will follow in the Arrow. The Stable, pop in for a coffee!

Every time my dog gets out of its basket, it has wet its basket. Is this bladder control? What can we do to prevent or help this situation? Claire from Hatfield Urinary incontinence can occur in male and female dogs of all ages but especially when they get older. To get an accurate diagnosis, a veterinary surgeon would need to examine your dog and get a urine sample to check for other signs of illness. If it is incontinence due to age or a weak bladder then tablets or drops can be prescribed to help reduce and make them feel much better as most dogs get quite upset when they are used to be being quite clean.
Q &A
How often should I bath my dog? P M from Hatfield This can vary depending on whether your dog has a skin problem that may need regular bathing with a prescribed shampoo or treatment. If this is the case, then advice on the number of times will be given under the vet‘s direction. If it‘s just for grooming and cleanliness, as long as a dog shampoo is used and rinsed off well then it can be done once a week, remembering to dry your pet well after bathing, especially in cold weather conditions. Muddy paws can be cleaned more often!

Nominations please for Flowers for Someone Special... Do you know someone special? Someone who has gone the extra mile for others or someone who just deserves something nice. The Arrow and Tracy‘s Flowers in Balby would like to make that special persons day with a beautiful bouquet delivered to their door! Let us know who they are and why they deserve a bouquet. Contact Michelle Sidebottom by e-mail or call 01302 534256 to nominate.
I would like to nominate my friend Anne Richards for a bouquet of flowers. Anne's husband was severely injured in a car accident two years ago. Anne has been at his side from the first crucial months in hospital to helping him learn to walk again on his return home. She has been wonderful in helping him with his recovery. Her husband is doing really well now & is even back driving. Anne is a lovely kind hearted person & has kept her "chin up " through all the worry. A bouquet of flowers would be lovely to say I think she is a special person. Actually they both deserve a " Well Done ! " Marilyn Bowering

Whether you‘re a shopaholic or a reluctant browser, most would agree that convenience is a key word when it comes to the charms and chores of shopping. What could be more convenient than the shops that are there on our doorstop? Don‘t pass them by as if they are somehow second rate. They are not. In fact convenience is only a part of the story as to why they deserve our support. Here is a little food for thought... Jumping into the car and heading for that out-of-town super store or shopping mall may seem a good idea. But it can end up a time-wasting, costly and frustrating experience.
‗A walk to the local shops is healthier... and cheaper in more ways than one!‘ Time, they say, is precious. But how many hours are wasted in traffic jams, just getting to your destination – and then driving round to find a place to park (and often having to pay for the privilege to do that, too!) In the meantime, the pennies you think you will save turn into pounds of extra expense. Strange, but true, most people don‘t view it that way. Why? – Because the extra expense is not shown on the receipt of goods they buy. But it all comes out of the wallet just the same!

Another thing which is often overlooked is the cost to the environment – something which is on the minds of a growing number of people in these days of climate changes. Unnecessary journeys simply add to all those CO2 emissions which are threatening to choke our globe. A walk to the local shops is healthier... and cheaper in more ways than one! If it‘s a friendly, personal service you are after, then there‘s nothing finer than a shop on Main Street! Such attention is a tradition that has its roots embedded in the history of each village and hamlet in the area. ―It wasn‘t until I tried my local shops that I realised just how much they stock,‖ said one shopper. ―I was amazed at the variety – and the costs were very reasonable too.‖ With so much choice from a first class quality butcher who offers a fine range of meats and delicatessen's and a pharmacy with everything you may need to get over the winter blues to a florist who has many years experience and designs flower arrangements for any occasion, why would you want to go else where? It‘s also a good time to visit Sprotbrough village as Vintage are now offering a super Spring Promotion with their Pick and Mix deal and Pink Pig have just started their Spring Sale. Also, Pink Pink has started to sell second hand baby equipment including prams and toys. If you have anything in good condition that you would like to sell or would like to browse around, just call in! The growth of our villages in recent years has seen an increase in facilities and business services. But they can only survive if the people they are designed to serve support them. Let’s face it, we’d all miss them if they were not there!

An Easter Break Planned? Pack with confidence With Tina G Refer to this list as a guide for creating your perfect 'capsule wardrobe' for any holiday. Deciding what to take is always difficult, but versatility is key; so take outfits and shoes that can be dressed up and down to fit all of the scenarios of the trip.
Here goes... Underwear - for each day. Fleshcoloured are perfect and go under any colour clothing. Take one multi-way bra to ensure it can always be altered to suit the top half of your outfit. Flattering pair of boot-cut jeans – dark denim or black One pair of trousers - the lighter the better for hotter climates, thicker for cooler destinations. One pair of shorts - knee length and tailored. These can be dressed down with ballet pumps or flip-flops, or worn with killer heels for the evening. A dress - make it versatile, something you can wear sightseeing, but also dress up to dine out in the evenings. Maxi skirt or dress can be worn as beachwear cover-ups or dressed up in the evening. One skirt – that can be mixed and matched with your tops. Three plain tops - natural fabrics are best; one in each of your 3 favourite colours. One cool kaftan - great as a cover-up on the beach, but also great for day or evening with your lightweight trousers or jeans dressed up or down depending on where you are going. Two casual tops - a crisp white shirt would tie in well here, as would a short-sleeved cotton or silk tunic, or cashmere or light wool for cooler weather. Crinkle-effect clothing is a great solution to the age-old problem of creases.
24
Don‘t take everything with you ―just in case‖! Two evening tops - choose something in your strongest, favourite colours. One lightweight smart cardigan - a simple way to cover-up when the sun goes down. White will make it very versatile… and chic! One Jacket - lightweight and not easily creased; this is a staple for cooler destinations Two sarongs – take up very little room and you can wear as an evening cover-up, or skirt-style on the beach, or to cover your shoulders on cultural visits. Visit www.baliwear.com to see how to tie a sarong to create different looks or try www.saress.com for an alternative to the usual sarong!! Swimwear - 2 bikinis and a one-piece swimsuit, or the versatile tankini which can do the job of both (and also double up as a vest top! One pair of comfy flats – flip flops for the beach or open toe sandals or pumps.
‗Remember, only choose pieces you feel gorgeous in and if you don't wear it at home, don't take it on holiday!‘ Monsoon image courtesy of pr shots.com
Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements
A pair of fabulous flip-flops - jewelled are fun and look great with everything. Or Wedges Cork and cut-out wedges are versatile and lightweight. Perfect for both day and evening outfits. Remember, just one of these! One pair of heels or sparkly sandals – these alone will accessorise and dress up an evening outfit.
Accessories - will transform even the simplest outfit. Pack less and accessorise to vary your look with fewer clothes! Sunglasses - in one of this season's fashion styles, make sure you feel comfortable in them, (i.e. not too large for your face). Statement jewellery - never underestimate how a statement piece can transform an outfit, and remember bright accessories show off a tan. Items must be bold in colour and chunky, multicoloured beads are perfect and embellished bib necklaces are everywhere this season. For day wear carved wrist cuffs and bangles are a great way to add colour to an outfit. Belt - wide and dramatic to dress up your kaftan, or narrow and elegant to finish your tailored shorts and crisp white shirt look perfectly. Hat to protect you from the sun during the day A large canvas bag - with plenty of room for all your day trip essentials and doubled up as hand luggage. A simple clutch bag - for evening do‘s, why not get a travel wallet that can double up as a clutch? Pashmina/wrap - may be old hat in the fashion world but they are essential for travelling. Make a colourful wrap on to the plane to keep you warm, and then wear it in the evenings. Also, to cover shoulders if you're travelling to countries where this is a cultural expectation. A light-weight, belted Mac or waterproof Final tip: Clever layering is one way to get around changeable weather conditions.

Skincare Make up Nails Skincare Make up Nails It‘s finally Spring time, I think we are all ready for some bright sunny days – I know I am! No more trousers and opaque tights, hurrah, however that can create a bigger problem for lots of ladies, exposing more skin!!Skin which hasn‘t been Beauty Tip Of The Month looked after whilst it has been cocooned in Instead of having a two minute winter woollies over the shower in the morning set aside a To start the new season on the Autumn and Winter little more time and firstly do some dry body brushing, always starting right footing... book in at Perfect months! The solution? from the tip of the fingers and Harmony for a ‗Kiwi & Sugar Cane Body Read on... brush vigorously up the arm and Exfoliation & Moisturisation‘
This month we are going to send out two Arrow/Perfect Harmony Gift Vouchers as we have had two lovely ladies who have lost somebody very close and dear to them, and all the therapists and I would just like to forward our deepest sympathies and to let them know we are thinking about them.
To wax or not to wax... That is the question!
from the toes upwards along the leg and then your torso, so that you are always directing the blood towards the heart. This will stimulate the circulation which will carry fresh oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells to nourish them as well as removing any old dead skin cells. Also to make the skin look more glowing and radiant use a body scrub prior to washing, and once your dry apply a good body moisturising cream and I can guarantee you your skin will feel alive and look healthy…..
Now there are lots of available treatments for hair removal but only a few with great success. You could use a depilatory cream which is messy and awkward, an epilady which is excruciating painful to conduct on oneself or shave which is quick and cheap but you can easily cut yourself and it needs repeating every few days and that is if you are fortunate! I would recommend waxing, which has many benefits to include cost, can do it for you and it can last 4-6 weeks… IPL which is short for Intense Pulse Light – this is the latest advance in pioneering technology, its a quick effective and safe treatment and offers long lasting hair reduction. It works by applying pulses of red light over the treated area, heat is produced and this travels down the hair destroying the follicle, along with its ability to regenerate. At Perfect Harmony we are registered with the government regulatory body ‗Care Quality Commission‘ for our IPL treatments which all commence with a private and confidential consultation where a free test patch will be given prior to treatment. www.richmond.doncaster.sch.uk COMPETITION NEWS As a result of a lot of hard work our Year 5 and Year 6 Athletes are riding high yet again after winning the Doncaster Schools' Athletics Competition held on Friday 26th February. They now go on to compete in Sheffield on Thursday 1st April against other South Yorkshire Schools in the Regional Finals. Well done, all the pupils showed a great competitive spirit and their attitude and behaviour was a credit to the school. We would also like to say a big thank you to all those parents who helped and supported the athletes at the event. Good luck in Sheffield.
National Technology Challenge Competition - Manchester Saturday 13th March Adam Werrett and William Johnson RUNNERS-UP ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC RESULT!
Adam Werrett and William Johnson from Year 2, achieved 2nd place at the National Technology Challenge Competition with their design and model of a Richmond Hill Gritter. They beat off entries from schools from around the country from as far a field as Portsmouth. The boys and their families, friends and teachers had an unbelievable experience at the competition culminating in them being crowned runners-up. What an achievement! We are very proud of them, not only for all the hard work they put into the project, but also on how they represented our school to a national audience – they were superb! Well done Adam and William, you deserve it. The long day on Saturday also involved two of our year 3 pupils, Jack Iveson and Daniel Jopling. They won the National Tech Challenge last year and were invited along to the competition to present this year‘s awards. They were thrilled to bits to be taking part. Well done everybody.
MATBALL Congratulations to our Y4 and Y5 Matball team who competed in a Matball game held this week at Ridgewood school. They won convincingly against our pyramid schools. Well done.
GREEN CONFERENCE
Year 6 pupils attended a conference earlier this week at High Melton College, which involved discussions and presentations on sustainable environments. Our pupils are focussing on these issues in class so it was a great opportunity to share ideas with other local schools. All the children were fantastic and great ambassadors for our school. Go Eco Warriors!

Sprotbrough Road Community Church (Methodist) The Family Table You all know by now that my Table has been used for many activities over the years. We played many games, Monopoly (although I didn‘t really like it) Scrabble, Snakes and Ladders etc. binding family and friends together. Talking seems easy at a table, especially a kitchen table, it‘s a friendly place to be. Probably the best use of the Table was when I lived on Sprotbrough Road. About 15 years ago I first went to Sunday Morning Service at the Goldsmith Centre, not every week to start with, but I soon attended every week. Then after about a year, we started a ‘get together‘ in our house for a few hours. We sang a few songs of praise, had a time of prayer, a chat and talked about a passage in the Bible. We have called this special time by various names like ‗House Group‘ and ‗Fellowship Group‘ etc., but the name doesn‘t really matter. We would gather around the Family Table which can seat about ten people. Somehow we are drawn together when sharing a table, we feel that we can share confidences and stories, happy and sad. When the Table was used for our ‗House Group‘ it was even better because Jesus was at the centre making us into a Family—the Family of God. It‘s a wonderful way to use a table. We are now into April and Easter Time and I would encourage you all, when your families meet to share your Easter Eggs, that you spare a few minutes to say a prayer of thanks to Jesus. He made a great sacrifice for us by dying on the cross, taking OUR sins on himself so that we may have a new life. No one could do more. Our ‗House Group‘ is no longer at my house, but we still meet elsewhere, and there are tables for us to sit at. We use two rooms now to accommodate us all. But there is room for more, so come and join us, there is a warm welcome waiting for you not just from us, but from Our Lord Jesus Christ too. Let this Easter be the start of a sharing, caring, life. Wishing you all a Blessed Easter
Jean Scott

Mirror, Mirror... Dear Readers,
Doncaster Advanced Motorists
Do you remember the old mantra ―mirror, signal, manoeuvre‖? Experienced drivers develop their mirror skills to the next level, by ―scanning‖ and even using a glance over their shoulder to remove the dreaded ―blind spot‖. ―Scanning‖ mirrors involves checking all three mirrors in sequence, starting with one side mirror, then checking the interior mirror and finally finishing on the other side mirror. To be consistent and effective, you should use all the information that is available to you when you are driving. Things change quickly, particularly in a busy urban environment and you want the best information you can get (i.e. the most recent) before you commit to a manoeuvre If we take signalling as an example, ideally all three mirrors should be checked before you apply the indicator. So, if you are going to signal to the right, you start with the right exterior mirror, then the interior mirror, the left exterior and finally the right exterior again. The reason we finish there is that this is the direction you intend to go and so it will let you know if it actually safe to put on the indicator. You might want to delay a moment perhaps to let another road user react to your intentions. On the other hand, if you were signalling to the left, you would start with the left exterior mirror, the interior, the right exterior and back to the left exterior before applying the indicator. As you start your turn, another quick glance in the relevant mirror is reassuring. When changing lanes, it is a good idea to get into the habit of supplementing the mirror scan with a right shoulder check, which assures you that there is nothing ―sitting‖ in your blind spot, moving along at a similar speed to you and so remaining undetected. A fast moving motorbike will be picked up by this glance, even if your mirror check a moment earlier failed to pick up that the rider was changing lanes and overtaking at the same time. These shoulder checks should be no more than a glance, however: your primary attention must be on the road ahead. Advanced driver‘s even use a left shoulder check to keep an eye out for bicycles. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer you will be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel:020 8996 9600. Safe Driving. Paul Tuke. Secretary Doncaster Advanced Motorists.

STOP THE TRAFFIK AT SPROTBROUGH Methodist Church and Hall Saturday APRIL 24th from 10 00 am.
Our Programme includes: Coffee, from 10 am & Various stalls, including plants, cakes, preserves, books, second hand jewellery and a quiz to do over coffee and lunch! Lunch from 12 noon, onwards. Various anti- trafficking displays. (In the Church) From 1.45 onwards Det Sgt Alastair Duncan of the UK HTC (Human Trafficking Centre) in Sheffield will give a presentation and answer questions, over a cup of tea!
Do join us if you can, for all or part of the day. Proceeds will go to one or other of the proposed Safe Houses in the North of England. (Or, if we have a good response, we will share it between them.) The RC Medaille Trust have plans to establish a safe house in the North East, as does the City Hearts Church in Sheffield. Currently the UKHTC use the City Hearts‘ home for recovering addicts and prostitutes, should there be room to spare. This is clearly not totally ideal and a separate establishment is sought in Sheffield. The issue of trafficking in all its forms remains. In the UK the trafficking of women and children for sex persists; there is such a demand
Every victim is ―Somebody‘s Daughter‖….or sister or child or friend. The question of Trafficking both of women and children is a logical progression from Domestic abuse issues and a form of Slavery which we thought we had abolished c 200 years ago. There are vast sums of money made from the exploitation of very young vulnerable women, tricked into thinking the trip they were taking offered good money and an education/job opportunities etc. From their arrival, tired and bewildered, they are moved from place to place, deprived of papers and passports (these are NOT illegal immigrants/we should remember that: they came legally and in good faith). Some of these young women manage to escape and that is where help with counselling and accommodation is needed. The former needs special training and the latter costs; the government does help with some safe accommodation through the Poppy Project (go on line!) & UKHTC but more is needed, and in the north… ALSO and VERY important……we should support those agencies working with families who are so poor they are tempted to try this way of escaping poverty in the first place. Save the Children, UNICEF, Amnesty International, Christian Aid, and so on. We hope to see you there on the day.
