Welcome to the latest edition of Sprotbrough Cricket Club’s Arrow column, bringing you all the news and goings-on of a club at the heart of the community.
Although we’ve passed the halfway point of the season, our on and off-pitch escapades show no signs of slowing down! Be sure to follow our Facebook (Sprotbrough Cricket Club) and Twitter (@CcSprotbrough) pages for regular updates regarding upcoming matches, match results and reports, training sessions, important dates for the season and general news around the club!
All our teams are really into the thick of their seasons now, and the games keep on coming. If you’ve enjoyed watching cricket on the TV so far this summer, there’s nothing better than to take that inspiration and support your local team. There’s nothing quite like village cricket. Be sure to join us at the games listed above and get behind the famous Copley Crest! All home matches will take place at the Ivanhoe unless stated otherwise. For information on start times, away fixtures and junior matches, please see our social media pages. We’d firstly like to thank everyone who turned out at our annual Big Bash event at the Ivanhoe field on Saturday 8th July. It might have belted it down later in the evening, but that didn’t stop our amazing community coming out to support their local cricket club and have a great time! Thank you very much to Automatic Fishcake and Anya Goel for providing the music to create a cracking atmosphere, along with The Brisket Pit, 500 Degrees North and The Cookie Smith – without whom our delightful food market wouldn’t have been possible. We’d also like to extend our gratitude to everyone who helped set up, coordinate and clean up the event. We wouldn’t exist without these wonderful people who give up their time to help keep the club and its facilities in top form, and we are very grateful for them.
On the pitch, we want to celebrate history at Sprotbrough CC this month. That is because we caught up with members of our inaugural junior all-girls’ team, who play at under-11s level. It’s safe to say these girls have been truly gripped by this summer’s Ashes and inspired by The Hundred of recent years, so much so they have become trailblazers at Sprotbrough and we couldn’t be prouder. Bethany, Harriet, Emily, Isla, Jaidie, Erin, Ellena, Connie, Georgina and Scarlett love their cricket. They told us they enjoy staying active whilst getting to see friends, and they were very excited to read their names in this article! These girls also incredibly mature for their age, which really showed when they said how they enjoyed the competitiveness of the games but always cheered for their opponents after they finished. There are some people at the Marylebone Cricket Club who could learn a thing or two from them…
When it comes to letting the cricket do the talking, these girls are on fire. Not only have they won all of their games in their all-girls’ division, but some of them also play at under-9s and under-11s level alongside the boys! When asked who was better, it’s safe to say there was a unanimous majority! It’s obvious their enthusiasm is rubbing off, with coach James and scorer Rebecca Rowett telling us how more girls are attending training with an interest to sign on next season. These girls personify everything Sprotbrough CC prides itself on: inclusivity, respect and enthusiasm. We can’t wait to watch them grow into the next Tammy Beaumont and Sophie Ecclestone in the near future!
Thank you as always for reading! Look out for the next edition of this column in September 2023!

Our Year 4 have had the privilege of being part of the Royal Opera House Create Day. This saw them being taught choreography by artists from the Royal Ballet, vocals from the Royal Opera House and prop making by the design team. This culminated in a stunning live performance across the country, live streaming each school taking part. What a wonderful experience and they were simply stunning to watch.
Congratulations and well done to Charlotte in Year 4 who won the competition to design a poster advertising the summer fayre at the Richmond Care Home on Sprotbrough Road. She was presented with this fantastic prize to reward her artistic talents.
What a fabulous Healthy Week we had recently. There were some fantastic sports the children were involved in – cricket, multi-skills, tag rugby, dance, football to name but a few. Thank you to Complete Coaching, Leger Sport, Club Doncaster, Cre8tive Dance and our fabulous PE leads Mrs Scanlon & Mr Burke – culminating in our great sports days held within the week.

We had a special invite for selected Y2 and Y3 children to YolanDa’s Band Jam held at the Cast Theatre. The children were part of the televised performance for CBeebies and had a fantastic time.
Our Y6 pupils enjoyed a wonderful residential with
Flying Futures, a 2 night 3 day camping adventure with some fabulous activities - on the go morning till night. Highlights were rafting, zip wire, robot catwalk, and a talent show extravaganza.
Our Y5 headed to Hill House school with our other Trust schools to take part in a fabulous day of science exploration. Some excellent investigating skills enjoyed by all.
Our wonderful Y6 gave us a show stopping performance to rival the West End in their very last appearance on the Richmond Hill stage. To say they were amazing would be an understatement- they absolutely blew us away!

This half term, the children in Reception have relished their new learning based on the centre of interest ‘In the Jungle’. They have been busy learning about different types of animals which has included naming animals and their young, knowing the name of a habitat for a variety of animals and naming where reptiles live. They have also been comparing environments around the world suited to reptiles and other animals and have looked at rainforests and where they are located on a map/globe. To stimulate this topic both Reception classes and the children in Nursery experienced a visit from ‘Reptile Rendezvous’ on Tuesday 13th June who provided a fantastic hands-on experience where the children encountered a range of exotic animals. The children were fascinated to learn that the Leopard Gecko ‘drops’ its tail to distract any predators then grows it back again later! They noticed how heavy the Burmese Python was and were surprised that he felt cold and smooth but not slimy. They learnt that the tortoise had a beak instead of teeth and found out that Burger the Tortoise got his name from the way he is held!
Having won the children’s prize last year, children are currently working on this year’s entry into Sprotbrough Scarecrow Competition. Each class will be working on their own scarecrow as part of this community project but we do not want to give our theme away too early … watch this space and we will reveal more in September!
All the staff at Orchard would like to say a HUGE well done to all children on their hard work and fantastic achievements during this academic year. We continue to be so proud of all that they do and would like to wish them continued success in their next year group.
We all hope that you have a fantastic summer break and we look forward to sharing more Orchard news from Sports Day in the august issue.
